Charles II Returns• A big spender and lover of all

aspects of entertainment• Pretended to be ok with a

Constitutional Monarchy but wanted a return to the power of his father. He bribed and blackmailed people.

• Had Catholic connections and wanted religious freedom for them

• Parliament said “no way” with the Test Act which made the Church of England supreme and forbid Catholics from holding political office

RETURN OF THE STUARTS

James II• Charles II’s brother

• A firm believer in the Divine Right of Kings

• A Catholic. He put Catholics in positions of power despite the Test Act. And brutally put down the rebellions that broke out.

• Why would James II have been unpopular?

AFTER CHARLES…

Page 6: Life after cromwell

• Parliament has had enough and support for James vanishes because of his harsh crack-downs and mass executions of rebels.

• In 1688 they invite James’ Protestant daughter Mary and her Husband William of Orange to take the throne.

• James’ supporters leave England, and he abdicates and follows them.

THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION!

Page 7: Life after cromwell

What was so glorious about the Glorious

Revolution• England has a Monarch

chosen by parliament for the first time.

• William and Mary agree to sign the Bill of Rights.

• This (finally) makes it clear that parliament is the real government of the country and brings an end to the idea of the Divine Right of Kings.
