LIFE AND RESURRECTION

IF A MAN DIES, SHALL HE LIVE AGAIN ? (Job.14: 14)

• There is hope for a tree, if it cut down, that will sprout again. (Job.14: 7)

• But the man dieth, and wasteth away. (Job.14: 10)

Is the death end of everything?

If the answer is “Yes”; you can tell your soul:

• “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die. (Isaiah. 22: 13)

• If the dead rise not? Let us eat and drink; for…….(1.Cor.15: 32)

• I will say to my soul, Soul; take thine ease, eat, drink.(Lk.12:19)

(This is Epicurean philosophy of old- Don’t be deceived)

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Death is a reality, common to all.

By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men (Rom.5: 12)

Why the death common to all ?

• It is appointed unto men once to die (Heb.9: 28)• There is no man that hath power in the day of his death.

(Eccl.8: 8)

Do not be deceived; there is a resurrection.

(No one likes to die; but death may come at any time)

How long man lived in the past?Adam 930 Gen.5: 5 He diedSeth 912 Gen.5: 8 He diedEnoch 905 Gen.5: 11 He diedCainan 910 Gen.5:14 He diedMahalaleel 895 Gen.5:17 He diedJared 962 Gen.5:20 He died

• (But seventh from Adam; Enoch was translated- 365 years)

Walked with God, he was not, for God took him (Gen.5: 21-24)

• Methuselah 969 Gen.5: 27 He died.(the longest) (Methuselah means- “*when he dies will happen”-Noah’s flood)

(*Made Enoch in the midst of a wicked generation to walk with God?)

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

When life began to be short? After the flood (started the fall in the years)

• After the flood Noah lived 350 years then died (Gen.9: 28)

• Terah lived 205 years and then died (Gen.11: 28)

• Abraham lived 175 years (Gen.25: 7)

• Isaac lived 180 years (Gen.35: 28)

• Joseph lived 110 years (Gen. 50: 22)

How long man lives at present? Ps. 90: 10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by

reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and

sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and wefly away. (Rarely we see now anybody over 100 years old)

• Life of David was only 70 years (2.Sam.5: 4; Acts.13: 36)

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

What God comments about the death? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the

Lord God; (Ez.18: 32)

Why the Lord have no pleasure in the death? (Of the unrighteous)

• a. Beginning of eternal separation from His presence. (2. The.1: 9)• b. Goes to the place of tormenting (Lk16: 23)• c. Beginning of the eternal destruction (2.The.1: 9)• d. Heading away into everlasting punishment (Mat.25: 46)• e. They will be cast into the eternal fire; Second death (Rev.20: 14)

• But righteous hath hope in his death. (Pro.14: 32)

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. (Ps.116: 15)

Why the death of his saints precious in his sight?

a.  Their entry into the rest from the labors (Rev.14: 13)

b.  They goes for a place of comfort (Lk.16: 25)c.   Beginning of (new phase) the eternal life (Mat.25: 46)d.  Departed from body; to be with Christ (Phil.1: 23)e.   Blessed they are; have part in the first resurrection. (Rev.20: 6)

• What the Lord could say of mine and your death?

Page 9: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

The Bible teaches - “be wise”

• Psalmist says; So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our heart to wisdom. (Ps.90: 12)

• Lord make me to know mine end, ... that I may know how frail I am. (Ps.39: 4)

• For that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.(Eccl.7: 1-2)

Do you desire for long life?

• What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? (Psalms.34: 12)

(Science and technologies helped to increase life span; but never to abolish death)

Page 10: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

For what you desire the long life?

• Solomon asked for wisdom (1.King.3: 9) God gave him but he ended his life as a fool (Neh.13: 26)

• Hezekiah asked the Lord to extend his life. Lord added 15 years to his life (Is.38: 5) only to have such a wicked son Manasseh for his throne. (2.King 24: 3)

• Samson asked of the Lord to give him strength, Lord gave it to him (Jud.16: 28) only to die together with the Philistines.

Thus saith the Lord; Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man

glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches. But …(Jer.9: 23, 24)

(Does not matter how long we live; but how we live)

• For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep. (Acts.13: 36)

Page 11: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

What Bible speaks of the life of man?

• Like the grass groweth in the morning, evening it is cut down and withereth. (Ps.90: 6)

• As a flower of the field, for the wind passeth over it and it is gone. (Ps.103: 15)

• My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle (Job.7: 6)

• Our days upon the earth are a shadow (Job.8: 9)

• Are not my days few? (Job.10: 20)

• Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth. (Ps.39: 5)

(How sad, if fails to understand the purpose of life?)

Page 12: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

What is the purpose of life? “In a nutshell, life is preparation for eternity.” Rick Warren

(Purpose of this life is “the preparation for the life eternal”)

• Who the source of life ? (Father the source) Genesis 2: 7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

• Son came to give us life (The giver of life) John 5: 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the

Son to have life in himself; He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not…(1.John 5: 12)

• Holy Spirit the channel of life (Imparts life)

• Man the recipient of life (Receives the life)

(Sin brought the death, but Son brought the life eternal)

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea (Job.14: 10)

This life on earth is just like a passing shadow. Beyond the death, God has an eternal plan.

The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Gen.2: 7)

Saith the Lord, and formed the spirit of man within him. (Zec.12: 1)

The very God of peace sanctify you wholly; ..your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of the Lord.

(1.The.5: 23)

• Word of God only separates each. Dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow

(Heb.4: 12)

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? (Job.14: 10)

(Man has body, soul and spirit -Three entities)

• Body (Soma)

Through which we feel senses; (sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch)

• Soul (Psyche)

Through we have the imaginations, conscience, memory, reasoning, and affections

• Spirit (Pneuma)

Through which we have the faith, hope, reverence, prayer, and worship.

(Any prick feels the pain in the body. Any hurt by a word or insult feels in the soul, but any presence of sin feels in the spirit.)

Page 15: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

What happens to soul and the spirit?

• When a person dies, the soul and spirit departs• The soul and the spirit cannot be separated• At death the body is left behind• Which may decay. (wasteth away) Job 14: 10

(“Soul” or “spirit” used interchanged- as it cannot be separated)

Man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?•

• And to Adam he said, for dust thou art and unto dust shall thou return. (Gen.3: 19)

• Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it, (Eccl.12: 7)

• Body rest in dust or decays; but soul and spirit departs

(Death and decay of the body is not the end of everything)

Page 16: Life And Resurrection

04/12/23 Email: [email protected] 16

LIFE AND RESURRECTIONWhere the soul goes at death?• What is the Old Testament teaching?

• “Gathered to his people” (Word used for death)

• Abraham gave up the ghost and died... and was “gathered to his people” (Gen.25: 8)

(Isaac- Gen.35: 27; Jacob- Gen.49: 33) (David fell asleep; “laid unto his fathers”. Acts.13: 36)

There were two places (the souls departed) The lower hell (Sheol) for unrighteous The upper place (Hades) for the righteous

• David was sure of the upper place (Ps.86: 13)• Jesus called it the Paradise (Lk.23: 43)

(In death Jesus gone there and took with him up “all the captives” of the upper place. Eph.4: 7-8)

Page 17: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

What is the New Testament teaching?

• Sleep in Jesus –death of believers - (1.The.4: 14)

• Fallen asleep in Christ. (1.Cor.15: 18; 52)

(Soul and the spirit depart to be with Christ, leaving the body for sleep)

• To depart, and to be with Christ, which is far better. (Phil.1: 23) (To die in Christ is just a sleep to rise up at his trumpet call- 1.The.4:16)

• The place of Paradise now. (In Heavenly places) 2.Cor.12: 2-4)

Eph. 4: 9 Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Teaching of Jesus on the life after the death. (Thru the story of the rich man and the Lazarus (Lk.16: 20-31)

Not a parable but real (compare with Luke 15: 4; 8)

• v.22 . Lazarus died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom

• Rich man died and was buried (Many gets a royal burial, but not sure

where goes)

(Pomp of the burial, with distinguished guests, orations, tomb, lamenting

no matter)

• v.23. Lazarus- in Abraham’s bosom (up- lift up his eyes and saw)

Rich man – in hell (down-far off-) place of torment (v.23, 24, 28)• V.25.Lazarus- now comforted• V.25 Richman- Tormented

Page 19: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Souls fully aware. (“Soul sleep” is not Biblical doctrine)

Richman: he lifted up his eyes (v. 23)

• Feels the tormenting (v.23) the thirst (v.24) the tormenting of the fire (v. 24)

• He cries (v.24) speaks (v.24) prays (v.24, 27) Memories of old (v.25)

• Concern for brothers (v.28) Listening, understanding (v.29-31)

• Those suicide does the biggest mistake (who thinks the death end of all) Really is jumping from the frying pan to the burning fire

(It seems Kerala, in spite of high literacy has the highest rate in the world)

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Was he not a good man; done good works?

(I think much better than any of us)

• He allowed Lazarus (having full sores) to lay at his gate, (v.20) - Kindness

• He allowed to be fed, from the bread that falls from the table (v.21) - Mercy

• He allowed his dogs to lick the sores (better than many who spend a lot for the dogs; but not bothered about poor ones) Social work

• He loved and cared his own brothers- or father’s household. (v.27) - Love

• He knew Abraham, Moses, and about all the prophets (v.24, 31) –Religious

Page 21: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

What was wrong with him; his riches?

• No. Sure; Job was the richest (greatest) of all the men of the east (Job.1: 3) (But riches can be a hindrance- Mark.10: 17-25 -Came with good question,

what need to do to inherit eternal life-but went grieved for he had great

possessions)

• Eating or drinking? Not always; but can trespass the borders (Job.1: 5)

What the real problem then?

Abraham said, son (Compare with- Luke 19: 9)• Remember that thou in lifetime, recievest good things. (Like rich fool, Lk.12: 16-21) • Might have said to himself “take thine ease, eat, drink and be merry” (Never thought about death or the life after death)

(God as the creator of all we are his children, but to become the child of God one must be born again- Only who are of faith are the sons of Abraham)

Page 22: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

When he would have taken the decision? Observe the answer to the Richman’s prayer from down.

• a. Cannot go from there back to earth to witness (place of living) v. 26; 31

• b. They have Moses and prophets.v.29 (Testimony of Jesus-Word.) Lk.24: 44

• c. Have to hear the Gospel and believe. Testimony of dead back to life will not do. (v. 30)

• d. Jesus confirmed the word through the greatest miracle (His resurrection) Heb. 2: 1-4, Mk. 16: 20,

Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Rom.10: 17)

• The Doctrine of Purgatory is not Scriptural; neither taught by Jesus, nor by his Apostles

(It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement. Heb. 9: 27)

Page 23: Life And Resurrection

04/12/23 Email: [email protected] 23

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

If a man die, shall he live again? (Job.14: 14)

• Job’s own answer: (Oldest book of the Bible) Though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see

God: Whom shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. (Job 19: 26, 27)

Examples – for faith• Noah - Labor of faith (Heb.11: 7) • Abraham went out (v.8) The work of Faith, Isaac and Jacob (heirs of the promise of faith) looked for a better country. (Heb.11: 9, 16) • They all died in faith. (Heb.11: 13) • Others were willing to suffer; Good report of faith.-(Heb.11: 36-39)

Why they preferred such a life? To obtain a better resurrection. (Heb.11: 35)

Page 24: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

• Promise of resurrection

• Promise to Daniel But to thou thy way till the end be; for thou shall rest, and stand in

thy lot at the end of the days. (Dan.12: 13)

• Prophesied in the Bible Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they

arise… (Is.26: 19)

The earth shall no more cover their slain (Is.26: 21)

• Jesus said:- I am the resurrection and the life. (John.11: 25)

• The two different resurrections. 1. The resurrection for life

2. The resurrection for damnation

Page 25: Life And Resurrection

04/12/23 Email: [email protected] 25

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

The two resurrections:

• Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to eternal life and some to shame and eternal contempt. (Dan.12: 2)

• Paul: There shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust (Acts. 24:15) Jesus spoke about the recompense at the resurrection of the Just (Lk14: 14)

• Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (John.5: 28)

• Sadducees (Religious rationalists) of Jesus time, were religious

people, many of them were of the priests. Yet denied the resurrection.

(Mat.22: 23, Mk.12: 18, Lk.20: 27, Acts.23: 8)

Page 26: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Christian faith is built on the firm foundation The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ

• If there is no resurrection of the dead, Christ is not risen. (1.Cor.15: 13)

• If Christ is not risen, our preaching is vain and faith is vain. (1.Cor.15: 14)

He is declared to be the Son of God with power (difference with other religions)…, by the resurrection from the dead. (Rom.1: 4)

God raised him up from the dead, that your faith and hope might be in God. (1.Pet.1: 21)

If thou shalt confess with the mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Rom.10: 9) (Son of God-Jn.3: 16; Jn.1:14; Jn.3:36; 1.Jn.4:14,15; 1.Jn.5:12; 1.Jn.5: 20)

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in…. Jesus will God bring with him. (1.The.4: 14)

Page 27: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Apostles witnessed of the resurrection of Christ.

• God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death. (Acts.2: 24)• This Jesus hath God raised, whereof we all are witnesses (Acts.2: 32)• God hath raised from the dead, whereof we are witnesses (Acts.3: 15)• With great power gave apostles witness of the resurrection (Acts.4: 33) • The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged. (Acts.5: 30)

No Gospel with out the resurrection. (1.Cor.15: 1-3)• Beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God (Mk.1: 1)

• Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my Gospel. (2.Tim.2: 8)

Page 28: Life And Resurrection

04/12/23 Email: [email protected] 28

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

Paul’s arguments• If there is no resurrection: Christ is not resurrected (1.Cor.15: 14)• If Christ is not resurrected: Our preaching is vain. (1.Cor.15: 14)• If Christ is not resurrected: Our Faith is vain. (1.Cor.15: 14)• If Christ is not resurrected: No forgiveness of sin (1.Cor.15: 17)

• Reason: In Adam all die,…..in Christ all be made alive (1.Cor.15: 22)• By man came the death, …also came the resurrection (1.Cor.15: 21)

Nature of the resurrection Body: (What body do they comes?)• It will be incorruptible (1.Cor.15: 42)• It will be celestial body (1.Cor.15: 40)• It is spiritual body (1.Cor.15: 44)• It is glorious body (1.Cor.15: 40-41)

(Lazarus or others raised came back to the same body, not like Jesus in glorious body- to live for ever change a must)

Page 29: Life And Resurrection

04/12/23 Email: [email protected] 29

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

“Flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God”

• All have to pass through either death and resurrection or the change (1.Cor.15: 51,52; 1.The.4: 16)

• The exception we see in Enoch and Elijah- (We will study the reason later)

When death will be vanished?

• The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. (1.Cor.15: 26)

• And there shall be no more death. (Rev.21: 4)

• He will swallow up death in victory. (Is.25: 8)

Page 30: Life And Resurrection

04/12/23 Email: [email protected] 30

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

THE TWO RESURRECTIONS• This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the

first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power. (Rev. 20: 5b; 6)

The first resurrection (Resurrection for life- of the just- of the righteous)

The last resurrection (at the end of 1000 years) (Resurrection for damnation- unjust- unrighteous)

The order of the resurrection. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they

that are Christ’s at his coming, Then cometh the end. (1.Cor.15: 22,23, 24)

(First resurrection is a series of resurrections, blessed are having part in it)

Page 31: Life And Resurrection

04/12/23 Email: [email protected] 31

LIFE AND RESURRECTIONWho all are in the first resurrection?

a. Christ is the firstfruit from the dead. b. They that are of Christ at his coming c. Two witnesses in the middle of tribulation. d. The martyrs of the tribulation period. (All the righteous of the Old testament also at Rapture – Dan.12: 2)

a. Christ is the firstfruit from the dead.• Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruit.. (1.Cor.15:

20)• He is the firstborn from the dead (Col.1: 18)• Jesus Christ the first begotten of the dead (Rev.1: 5)

b.Those resurrected with Christ The graves were opened and many bodies of the saints which slept

arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the Holy city, and appeared unto many. (Mat.27: 52; 53)

(A proof for rebellious –who denied the resurrection- Ps. 68: 18)

Page 32: Life And Resurrection

04/12/23 Email: [email protected] 32

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

C. They that are of Christ at his coming

• The Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the arch-angels, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first. (1.The.4: 16)

• In a moment, ….and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (1.Cor.15: 52)

• And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to the everlasting life. (Dan.12: 2)

• And shall come forth, they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life (Jn.5: 28)

(For the Old testament saints we are not seeing any separate resurrection)

If not at rapture, when their resurrection ? -They are present at the marriage supper of the lamb- (Mat.8: 11)

Page 33: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

d. Two witnesses in the middle of tribulation.

• After three days and a half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, come up hither and they ascended up to heaven. (Rev.11: 11;12)

• Who are they?

Enoch (or Moses) and Elijah.

For me, I consider, Enoch more than Moses (for the reason, Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God) (1.Cor.15: 50)

(Both were taken in the physical body, without seeing the death; nothing mentioned that they were changed and taken. -Heb.9: 27)

Page 34: Life And Resurrection

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

e. The martyrs of the tribulation period.• I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus,

and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years…. This is the First resurrection. (Rev.20: 4; 5)

• (The last resurrection is separated from the first resurrection by

a gap of 1000 years)

The Last Resurrection• But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were

finished. (Rev.20: 5)

• (They all are resurrected for the “shame and everlasting contempt” (Dan.12: 2) “unto the resurrection of damnation”. (Jn.5: 28)

LIFE AND RESURRECTION

The Last Resurrection (For condemnation only)

• The sea gave up the dead which were in it, and the death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them. And they were judged every man according to their works. And the death and the hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

(Rev.20: 12- 14)
