4

John 21:3 “Simon Peter said, ‘I’m going fishing.’ ‘We’ll come, too,’ they all said. So they went out in the boat...” (NLT) Peter was the first one to say he was going fishing and then everybody jumped on board!

Reinhard Bonnke: “The church is not a pleasure boat even though we like to dance. The church is a life boat sent to rescue lost humanity. Heaven doesn’t dance when the church dances. Heaven dances

when sinners are saved. From the captain to the cook, we need all hands on deck!”

5

Ecclesiastes 4:9 “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.” (NLT) Fishing is more fun when you have somebody with whom you can share the experience.

James Davis: “If we are to finish the Great Commission, we cannot care who gets the credit, as long as God gets the glory. We must move from ‘me’ to ‘we’ if ‘they’ will ever hear about ‘Him.’”

2.Fishing Isn’t Always Easy

John 21:4-5 4“At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who He was. 5He called out, ‘Fellows, have you caught any fish? ‘ ‘No,’ they replied.” (NLT) These men had fished all night but had not caught a single fish even though they were expert fishermen.

7

James Davis: “In the last five years, the Global Church has witnessed more than 1.4 million new church plants with more than 200 million coming to Christ. The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is growing faster than in any other time in history. (cont’d)

When we measure the global growth of the Church, we are on schedule to witness firsthand the doubling of the size of the Church, from just over one billion to more than two billion in our generation.”

Luke 10:2-3 2“These were His instructions to them: ‘The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask Him to send more workers into His fields. 3Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.’” (NLT) The only problem with the harvest is that there aren’t enough workers helping to gather the harvest.

Charles Spurgeon: “If sinners be dammed, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for.”

3. Fishing Requires Some Flexibility

John 21:6 “Then He said,’Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!’ So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.” (NLT) These men knew they had to try something new because they had come up empty on this fishing trip!

10

Oswald J. Smith: “We are loaded with countless church activities, while the real work of the church, that of evangelizing and winning the lost is almost entirely neglected.”

Luke 5:4 “When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.’” (NLT) If you are going to reach people for Christ in the 21st century, you will have to try some new methods which may mean reaching out to others who are different than you politically, economically and socially because they ain’t biting on your side anymore!

Charles Malik: “What has been the greatest American contribution to the rest of the world? Has it been money, food, medical skill, military might or industrial know-how? (cont’d)

The greatest thing to come out of America has been the American missionary effort - the quiet, selfless men and women who have left the comfort and security of their homeland to bring the Gospel of Christianity to less favored nations.”

4. Fishing Reveals Our Devotion

John 21:7 “Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It’s the Lord!’ When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore.” (NLT) The devotion of these men was revealed as a result of what happened on this fishing expedition.

13

James Davis: “More than two billion people on the planet do not have a church within walking distance or even one verse of Scripture to read. It must be all hands on deck to save the lost. A church that is not winning the lost is lost itself.”

Luke 5:7-8 7“So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!’” (NKJV) Peter’s devotion to Christ and acknowledgment of his sinfulness came as a result of this fishing expedition.

14

Charles Spurgeon: “Have you no wish for

others to be saved? Then you're not saved yourself,

be sure of that!”

Matthew 4:18-20 18“One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers - Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew - throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people!’ 20And they left their nets at once and followed Him.” (NLT) It’s really wise to follow Jesus in fishing for people as that is the very reason that He came to earth.

D.T. Niles: “Evangelism is just one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.”

Proverbs 11:30b “...he who wins souls is wise.” (NKJV) Sharing your faith with others is one of the wisest things that you can ever do.
