Dear Country Club Residents, Spring is FINALLY here! This year, the first day of the season is March 20, 2016 … just a few days after one of my favorite holidays, St. Patrick’s Day. Hopefully, the cold weather will have subsided by the time you receive this issue of Country Club Life and we can begin thinking about getting the grill ready for the summer. Since this is the April issue, it is worth noting there are some bizarre and unique holidays within the month outside of the obvious April Fools Day. No, I am not talking about the inevitable April 15 - Income Tax Day, but some other off the wall days. The number in front of the “holiday” is the date. Here’s a sampling: 1 - April Fool's Day – you already knew this one1 - International Fun at Work Day – is this possible?2 - National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day – yes!3 - Don't Go to Work Unless it's Fun Day – we know your decision4 - National Walk to Work Day – first Friday of month5 - Go for Broke Day – see you at Lakeside Casino … our sponsor! 6 - Plan Your Epitaph Day – a little morbid if you ask me7 - National Beer Day – I had to put this in, I’m Irish for goodness sake!7 - No Housework Day – works with National Beer Day!10 - Golfer's Day – don’t lie about your score14 - Look up at the Sky Day – don't we have anything better to do?21 - National High Five Day – third Thursday of the month28 - International Astronomy Day – what’s your sign?30 - National Honesty Day – now is the day your honest about your golf score! Enjoy the month of April folks, and don’t forget to keep sending in those stories and pictures! Sincerely, Thomas F. in the Bedroom

SwagBy Paula Schnoor-Comes – Country Club Resident

Ever since I can remember I have always liked bed coronets, pelmets & testers. They add charm, el-egance and romanticism to any room. Through the years I have managed to make several, and more recently finished one in my own room. Sophi has a tester above her bed, where as Ava has a coronet. I think it largely depends on the fabric, size of room and bed style to decide which is more suitable. Both of my littlest girls have had them above their bed since birth. One day they will leave the nest, create a home of their own and hopefully want me to make them a coronet for their little girls.

There are several easy ways to make a bed coronet; a tester takes more time, fabric and can be much more difficult to construct. One of the quickest ways to make a coronet is to find a shelf that has the right lines and look for the room you plan to use it in. I often will find something from Hobby Lobby and then spray paint or chalk paint it to the color I want it to be. I then use coordinating fabric to the bedding and sew some basic curtains. Make sure you add at least an extra foot of fabric to your curtains so you have plenty of room to create a swag on each side of the bed. You will want your curtains to touch the ground on both sides of the bed if possible. I think fringe and tassels always look nice, but it takes the right room to pull that off. In my bedroom I used a pot rack and painted it with chalk paint in a coordinating color with my room and used the existing iron pot rail to hang the curtains from; I secured it to the ceiling using dry-wall anchors and then added antique looking knobs as the curtain pull backs.

This project is so easy, but has such dramatic re-sults! Love it!

MOLLY’SA Resident’s Perspective: HELP! IT’S TAX TIME!

MUSINGS

Only a few more days before April 15, tax day! It’s times like these I wish my life were more aligned with the lyrics of The Beatles. I wish on my morning commute I could croon, “Yeah, I’m the taxman.” In that case, I might actually know a little bit more about what the heck I am doing come tax time. With refunds and credits and exemptions and dozens more terms and tricks, I don’t know my audit from my elbow. So I guess this is adulthood?

When I was little, I was told I could do anything I wanted to do if I worked hard and set my mind to it. I’m sure most little kids

receive this message growing up. But are we ever told about the things we have to do when we grow up? Taxes and death I believe were the certainties Ben Franklin noted about life. Knowing this now (and maybe even back then) makes me want to live in an-other Beatles’ lyric … I want a revolution. You know, we all want to change the world. But then I think again. Entering this new world of personal re-sponsibility and accountability — it is somewhat refreshing. At a certain point, it really matters what we do … and if you disagree, just don’t do your taxes, and I promise the IRS will prove you wrong. This is probably the most unpopular opinion I have, but taxes strangely ignite a passion within me. A passion for living! I matter! What I do matters! Even if my mattering is simply pay-ing into a system, it still counts for something, right? I’m not a nowhere man. I am, he is, you are, he is, you are me, and we are all together in this!

So this April, while you think of miserable money woes and Franklin’s wise words, consider looking on the bright side of life. As stressful, exhausting, and frustrating as tax time can be, we are in this all together now. I think if we all thought of typically negative things like taxes in such a positive way, life would be getting better all the time. Don’t fret too much this April … we can work it out. Okay, I am done with my Beatles puns. But my message remains: relax and let the stress go. Try looking across the universe with a bit more positivity this month. Sorry, I had to get one more in there.

Interesting Facts…

The song, "Hail to the Chief" has long been the offi-cial anthem of presidents of the United States. The song was first associated with the president in 1815 when it was played to honor both George Washing-ton and the end of the war of 1812. The song was also played at the opening of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal on July 4, 1828.

Andrew Jackson was the first president to use the song in his own honor 1829. It was also played in 1837 at the inauguration of President Van Buren, but is was Julia Tyler, second wife of President John Tyler, that requested the song be used to an-nounce the arrival of the president.

President Chester Arthur didn't like the song and asked John Phillip Susa to compose another song, which Susa did. The song was entitled "Presidential Polonaise." After Arthur left office, the entrance song "Hail to the Chief" was again used for public appearances by the president.

The Department of Defense made the song the official tribute while President Harry Truman was in office.

The song was written in 1812 by James Sanderson, a self-taught English violinist and the conductor, who wrote many songs for local theatrical produc-tions during the 1790s and the early years of the 19th century.

Here are the words. The next time you hear the song, feel free to sing along!

Hail to the Chief we have chosen for the nation,Hail to the Chief! We salute him, one and all.Hail to the Chief, as we pledge cooperationIn proud fulfillment of a great, noble call.Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,This you will do, that's our strong, firm belief.Hail to the one we selected as commander,Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!

We all know the song, but do we really know the song ...Well, did you know?

TAX-ADVANTAGEDEDUCATION

SAVINGSACCOUNTS

Anyone can contribute to education savings accounts

Nobody wants to pay more taxes than necessary. One way to save on taxes that you may not have considered is through a 529 education savings account. You don't have to be a student or the parent of a student – anyone can contribute to education savings accounts for the benefit of another person.

Some states provide tax incentives and six states provide for state tax parity

The Scoop on 529s: A 529 education savings account is an option available to anyone who would like to help a loved one save for college. These plans are state-sponsored programs designed to help you save for higher education expenses. Parents, grandpar-ents, family and friends – anyone can contribute to these types of plans for a beneficiary.

Some states provide tax incentives to residents who invest in their home state's 529 plan. And six states – Pennsylvania, Ari-zona, Maine, Missouri, Montana and Kansas – provide for state tax parity, which means if you owe income tax in that state, you can deduct your contributions to any state's 529 plan. To take advantage of this benefit for 2015, you must make your donation by year-end in most states.

529 plans also offer tax advantages for the beneficiary. The plan’s earnings accumulate tax free, and the withdrawals are tax- and penalty-free as long as they are used at an eligible educational institution for educational purposes. Helping to pay for tuition, books, room and board are all examples of how a 529 account can benefit your loved ones. Withdrawals not used for qualified expenses may be subject to taxes and a 10% penalty.

Sleep. Everybody needs it but no one seems to get quite enough of it. Blame it on the demands of a digital age, the stressors of family life, or simply being overscheduled.

HealthyStaying Through Better Sleep

healthy livingWritten by N2 Staff Writer, Elizabeth McCabe

Sleep is one of those precious com-modities that our bodies need to function at their optimum level. Did you know that sleep helps repair your blood vessels and heart? That night of sleep even helps your brain remember information, as well as work properly.

A lack of sleep can create a multi-tude of problems, such as making bad decisions, depression, and can even control one’s emotions. An increased risk of obesity and high blood pressure can also be caused from an ongoing sleep deficiency. Not to mention making one more susceptible to accidents. The Three Mile Island nuclear incident and the Exxon Valdez oil spill were both linked to sleep-deprived workers.

How Can You Sleep Better?According to the National Sleep Council, a bedtime routine is impor-tant for establishing a healthy sleep

pattern. A routine helps to cue the body that it’s time to settle down and prepare for sleep. Whether that in-volves meditation, prayer, reading or yoga, getting your body ready for bed is important. Stick to the same bed-time every day for the best results. Create a conducive environment for sleep by banishing cell phones, televi-sion, and all electronic devices from your bedroom. Make your room quiet, dark and cool. Don’t overlook a sup-portive mattress and foundation for a good night of sleep either. Still tossing and turning? Consider a supplement like magnesium and calcium, 5-HTP, valerian root or melatonin. Or sip some hops tea. Hops binds to the melatonin receptors in the brain. In random studies, the effect of hops is equivalent to sleeping medications without the side effects.

Results Of Sleeping BetterSleep can be overlooked in the hustle

and bustle of life, but don’t neglect getting your precious ZZZs. Improve your memory through sleep, especial-ly when learning new skills. Reduce inflammation through sleep. Accord-ing to research, those who sleep less than six hours a night have higher blood levels of inflammatory pro-teins. Cut your risk of heart disease, arthritis, stroke, diabetes and stroke, as well as premature aging through sleep. Getting enough sleep can even foster creativity, increase athleti-cism, and help you maintain a healthy weight. According to a study at the University of Chicago, dieters who were well rested lost more fat than those who were sleep deprived (who lost more valuable muscle instead). Sleeping sufficiently will even curb your appetite since the same sectors of the brain control sleep and me-tabolism. Never underestimate a good night of rest!

PICK YOUR STARTING LINEUP If you’re antsy to start planting during early spring, start with vegetables that are most likely to thrive in cooler weather. In general, greens and root vegetables have the best chance of rooting in cool soil. On the hardiest end are spinach and lettuce, which can sprout with soil between only 35 and 40 degrees. Spinach is also more frost-resistant than other veggies. When the soil is slightly warmer plant greens such as kale, cabbage, Swiss chard and collards; root vegetables including radishes, beets, carrots and turnips; and other cool season favorites like broccoli and peas. Some gardening pros swear that the hardiest cool season vegetables taste best when planted in colder weather!

READY, SET …Most gardeners watch the thermometer to deter-mine the start of gardening season, and it is true that late frosts threaten vegetables with foliage above ground. However, a common misconcep-tion in gardening is to focus on the temperature of

Veggie lovers, rejoice! Spring is finally here and it’s time to get back in the garden. Although things are warming up, spring weather can still be erratic, so set your garden up for success by planting cool-season spring crops that won’t back down from Mother Nature!

the air rather than the soil. It is actually the soil temperature that most affects a seed, and occa-sional periods of warm spring weather may not sufficiently warm the soil to begin spring garden-ing. Pick up a soil thermometer at your local garden center to ensure the soil is at least 35 – better yet 40 – degrees before planting. Don’t have a soil thermometer? Improvise by using a kitchen meat thermometer plunged 2 inches into the soil; just be sure to wash it before checking your Easter ham!

GO!It’s the day you’ve dreamt of all winter long – time to dig in the soil! Before planting it’s a good idea to prep the soil since it might be wet from rain or melting snow. Lighten and fortify the soil by adding compost or another organic matter. Then aer-ate the soil by gently lifting it with a garden fork. Aerating encourages healthy soil by incorporating the compost and adding oxygen to the soil before planting. If cold, compacted soil prohibits planting in your area, you can circumvent the issue by using raised beds or containers, which generally warm up sooner than the ground. Row covers are another option, but keep in mind that the air underneath the heavy plastic can get very (possibly too) warm on sunny days, so be sure to cut slits to ventilate.

With thoughtful selection and extra care, you can enjoy the harvest of early spring!

home matters

Spring is the perfect season to refresh and update the style of your home. 2016

brings with it many exciting ideas and creative liberties. Designer Jonathan

Adler sums it up perfectly, saying “We live in an anything-goes world where it’s

okay to mix high with low, mid-century with minimalist modern, colors, patterns

and everything in between. The best trend I’m seeing is people forgetting about

the ‘rules’ and loving what they love unapologetically.”

Color of the YearEach year, Pantone releases a Color of the Year, which influences fashion and design trends in a major way. Leatrice Eiseman, Ex-ecutive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, best describes the color pair of 2016, saying “joined together, Rose Quartz and Seren-ity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness, as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”

Eclectic KitchensThe kitchen, often referred to as the heart of the home, has become a blank canvas for showcasing personal style. Black stainless steel appliances are an increasingly popular alterna-tive to the more traditional stainless options. Mismatched upper and lower cabinets are a wonderful way to incorporate various paints, stains and finishes. Countertops made of concrete, re-cycled glass or wood add texture and individuality.

Formal SpacesIn an intentional effort to be more present, many are opting to turn off the television in favor of tech-less living rooms. Creating spaces for conversation and relaxation is becoming increasingly more im-portant. For the same reason, formal dining rooms are making a comeback. Fireplaces (both traditional wood-burning and more sleek, electric versions) will be focal points for many of these formal spaces.

Bathroom RetreatsTo many, the bathroom is becoming just as much about luxury as it is function. Heated flooring, steam showers and towel warmers create a relax-ing environment. The bidet, a sanitation staple in many other countries, is gaining popularity in the United States. Adding a lounge seating area to your bathroom can make the space feel more spa-like. Bathroom mirrors that make a statement and me-tallic wallpapers add elegant touches.

Design AccentsAdding some unique accents to your spaces will truly make your house a home. Whether you collect pieces while traveling or create your own artwork, here are some trending ideas for 2016:• Geometric patterns in tile, fabrics, and artwork• Graphic, colorful throw pillows• Black and white mixed with wood tones• Mixing various shades of gray• Typography art, including signage or marquee lights• Artisan wares, such as woven baskets and tapestries• Framed photography as art, purchased or DIY
