CHP alumni Michael and Kimberly Ong challenged alumni during the

months of April and May to give to the CHP endowment, offering to match

up to $5,000 in donations.

We’re happy to report that CHP alumni not only rose to the challenge, but

exceeded it by over $1,600! The Ongs have generously offered to match the

additional funds raised as well. These gifts will be invested through the CHP

endowment, and will have an impact on CHP students for years to come.

This year, for example, proceeds from the endowment enabled students to attend

the Western Regional Honors Council Conference (see p. 4 of this newsletter) in

Riverside.

The CHP staff would like to extend our

thanks to the many alumni, friends and staff

who gave during the challenge, and to

Michael and Kimberly Ong for challenging us

all to support the CHP!

Alumni give back to the CHP

The CHP is proud to announce that several of our

students and recent alumni have received

prestigious scholarships this year.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship supports

undergraduates who demonstrate potential for an

outstanding research career in mathematics, the natural

sciences, computer sciences, or engineering.

Scholarship recipient and CHP junior, Joshua Cook, is

double-majoring in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

and Chemistry. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in

Molecular Biology or Bioinformatics and become a

professor at a major university, researching prevalent

diseases.

Honorable Mention for this scholarship also went to a

CHP student, Jordan Edmunds, a junior majoring in

Electrical Engineering.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the flagship

international educational exchange program sponsored

by the U.S. government and is designed to increase

mutual understanding between the people of the United

States and the people of other countries. Recipients of

Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic

or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated

leadership potential in their fields.

Recent CHP alumni Emma Austin (’15) and Stella Liu

(’15) were both selected for the Fulbright. As a winner

of the Fulbright University Master’s in Creative Process

grant to Ireland, English student Emma designed her

own Master’s degree plan to support her novel writing

with coursework in Creative Writing and Irish Literature

at University College Cork and Cork Institute of

Technology. Stella Liu, who earned her B.A. in

International Studies, plans to study urban, local food

production in Asia to guide urban planning and policy.

Paul Lowood (’15), CHP and Economics alumnus, was

selected as a Fulbright Semi-Finalist.

The National Science Foundation Graduate

Research Fellowship Program funds 3 years of

graduate study at $46,000 a year toward a research-

based M.S. or Ph.D. in science, engineering, or social

science in U.S. or abroad. Recipients are selected on

the basis of intellectual merit and the potential for

broader impacts of their proposed research projects.

CHP alumni Chelsea Anorma (’14) and David Cao (’14)

received the fellowship. Chelsea is currently a

Chemistry Ph.D. student at the University of Illinois

Urbana-Champaign. David is a Materials Chemistry

Ph.D. student at the University of California, Santa

Barbara.

Congratulations to all of the honorees! We would also

like to offer a special thanks to the UCI Scholarship

Opportunities Program staff for their dedication in

assisting these individuals through the rigorous

application process.

This year at the CHP Banquet,

Assistant University Librarian Alison

Regan was present to award four

CHP students with $250 prizes for

outstanding honors theses, named

in honor of the late Nellie Ansley

Reeves. For over 20 years, the

Nellie Ansley Reeves Award

endowment has funded prizes to

UCI students to honor Reeves’

wishes to involve students in the

library. 2016 is the first time the

Libraries have collaborated with the

Campuswide Honors Program to

offer awards for outstanding Honors

Theses, but we hope our

partnership will go on for many

years.

The 2016 UCI Libraries’ Nellie

CHP Banquet Awards

The following awards were also

given at the CHP Banquet in May:

The Tiffany Yu Award is presented

to a graduating senior who has

significantly contributed to the

Campuswide Honors Student

Council over his or her time at UCI.

Recipient Alyssa Wu (’16) has

contributed countless hours to

CHSC and the CHP as a CHSC

Representative, CHSC Social Chair,

CHSC President and as a Peer

Academic Advisor for the CHP. This

fall Alyssa will attend the University

of Michigan in pursuit of a Master of

Architecture.

The Sircello Award is given to an

outstanding graduating CHP senior

whose work exemplifies depth and

breadth of scholarship.

Award winner Maranda Li (’16)

excelled in two majors, Genetics and

Music, and was selected for Phi

Beta Kappa. She has completed a

thesis through the School of

Biological Sciences’ Excellence in

Research program and performed

her senior recital through the School

of the Arts. She will soon be leaving

the U.S. to teach English in Japan.

The McWilliams Renaissance

Award is given to a student who

demonstrates excellence in a

number of fields, and a curiosity that

drives them to explore and develop

skills in many different areas—in

short, a Renaissance man or

woman.

Awardee Katherine Lee (’16) has

completed varied research in biology

and psychology. Outside of

academics she plays violin in a

chamber group, volunteers at a

children’s hospital, folds origami,

raises butterflies, and moderates a

collaborative online writing

community.

CHP students show some UCI pride at the conference.

This year’s Western Regional Honors Conference,

which draws honors students and faculty from

California to Alaska, was hosted by UC Riverside.

Thanks to the generosity of donors to the CHP

endowment, the CHP was able to send 8 students to

the conference, 6 of whom presented their research.

Students were selected to present in a competitive process

typical of scholarly conferences. They learned to write

conference proposals, and submitted them for

consideration. Happily all of the CHP proposals were

accepted, and then the real work began.

To prepare for the challenging task of presenting research

to an audience of attendees involved in honors, and

potentially from any field of study, CHP students and staff

edited papers, and conducted mock presentations with

critiques. When the day of the conference arrived, the CHP

students were ready. Not surprisingly, they all gave great

presentations and were adept at fielding questions.

Two students, Dillon Dejam and Desiree De Pace, had two

conference proposals accepted. Dillon Dejam not only gave

a paper related to his research in Biochemistry and

Molecular Biology. He also led a workshop on networking

for conference goers. Desiree De Pace both presented on

her research on challenges faced by student parents, and

was selected for the poster session as well. Ericka P

Alumni Enjoy a Night of CHPrestidigitation!

CHP alumni and supporters recently spent a spellbinding

evening together at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA.

Also known as the official clubhouse for the Academy of

Magical Arts, the Magic Castle features world-class

magicians performing spectacular illusions to large

audiences, as well as finer feats of prestidigitation and

close-up magic to small rooms of spectators.

CHP alumni were treated to a delicious dinner as well as

had the opportunity to volunteer for various magic acts,

be hypnotized, and even have their minds read by

magical clairvoyants. Highlights include watching one

magician perform her award-winning tricks in the close-

up gallery and witnessing an illusionist produce a live

macaw from a brightly-colored handkerchief. Delightful

oddities abound around the Castle itself, including an

enchanted stuffed owl named Archimedes who was

ready to answer alumni’s questions (including would they

return to the Magic Castle . . . the answer was a

resounding YES!). And Irma, the resident ghost,

performed their musical requests on her marvelous

piano. A magical time was had by all!

Special thanks to CHP alumnus, Edgar Cheung (’12),

whose extra guest passes allowed us to accommodate a

majority of those on the waitlist for this event.

CHP alumni paused for a group picture in between card tricks and rabbits

pulled from hats during their visit to the Magic Castle on February 13, 2016.
