THEME:
By the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, we
build up the Body of Christ as we exercise His
gifts.
WORD:
Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9; Eph 4:1-13 or Eph
1:17-23; Mk 16:15-20
ORDER:
“Go into all the world and proclaim the good news
to the whole creation.” (Mark 16:15)
REFLECTION:
This Sunday, we commemorate the Solemnity
of the Ascension when our Lord Jesus Christ
spelled out his remarkable orders to His disci-
ples: “Go into all the world and proclaim the
good news to the whole creation. The one who
believes and is baptized will be saved, but the
one who does not believe will be condemned.
And these signs will accompany those who
believe; by using my name, they will cast out
demons; they will speak in new tongues; they
will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they
drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them;
they will lay their hands on the sick, and they
will recover.” (Mark 16:15-18) Then Jesus was
taken up into heaven.
The Gospel of Mark says that the disciples
went and preached everywhere. The Lord con-
tinued to work through them and confirm their
message with miraculous signs. It is therefore
fitting to say that as we submit to the Holy
Spirit, we are accepting His command to go
into mission. There is no turning back for the
disciples of Christ for it is only when we go to
the mission fields that the gifts of the Holy

Spirit manifest its fruit. There is also no reason for us to doubt and waiver for the assurance of Je-
sus is very clear, that He will be with us until the end of age, and all power, in heaven and on earth
has been given to us.
In the first reading, the Lord says: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon
you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the
earth”. This is a great promise of the Lord that we must all believe; that when we are baptized in
the Holy Spirit, we will become witnesses and we will be empowered through the gifts of the Holy
Spirit to fulfill the mission entrusted to us by the Lord. It is however, in God’s hands when He
wanted to empower us. It is in sharing the power of the Holy Spirit to others that we ourselves
grow. If we keep it to ourselves and do not spread it to others, then we do not attain fruitfulness.
In the second reading, we are urged to live a life worthy of the calling to which we have been
called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making
every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph. 4:1-3. By this, we should
be seen as Christ’s representatives on earth, in light of this truth. We are being challenged to live
lives worthy of the calling we have received. We have to work for unity which just does not hap-
pen. We have to work at it.
Differences among people lead to division, but this should not be true in the Church or any Chris-
tian Community. Instead of concentrating on what divides us, we should focus on what unites us
to become one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God. We have to
learn to work together, with our varying gifts, to fulfill the work God entrusted to us. We have to
learn to enjoy the way we members of Christ’s body complement one another, in love.
The Ascension of our Lord marks the culmination of Christ’s mission on earth and marks the be-
ginning of the apostles’ mission to all nations. The apostles and disciples are to spread to the entire
world what Jesus accomplished in His human life. This is how God has planned our salvation. Es-
sentially, our task is to communicate the divine life of God, through Baptism, and to instruct in the
ways of Christian life. This is what makes the Ascension so important: we are now to act in persona
Christi, to take the place of the physically absent Christ in the world and make Him visible and au-
dible through our earthly lives.
Yes, brothers and sisters, as we reflect upon the Ascension of our Lord this week, let us remember
that while Jesus has ascended into heaven, He is here with us today. He is present in our hearts.
He is present in our Church, the Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. The Lord ascends to the
Father, but at the same time He is with his disciples, working through them and confirming His
presence with miracles. Let us proclaim to all the great joy of the Ascension, that truly, Jesus
Christ is Lord. Amen.
