Research Objectives

Yöntem Research targeted to generate an overall understanding of Turkish public opinion in relation

with the COVID-19 which was defined as a pandemia by World Health Organization on March

11th. In line with this key objective, topics that the research deep dived are as follows:

• Key source of media channels on COVID-19 and preference for follow-up

• Knowledge level on COVID-19

• Precautions taken personally or in households

• Changes in consumption and saving behaviors

• Experiencing any symptom in the household or witnessing in acquaintances

• Emotional state on pandemia and future expectations

• Evaluations of different institutions on their responsibility level and performance

• Changes in work life and working conditions

• Satisfaction level with current working conditions

Target Group

Definition

18+ age, online active male and female population, representing ABC1C2 socio-economic

status (SES) groups in urban areas.

Geographical

Coverage

Turkey urban areas were represented through NUTS1 classification of Turkish Statistical

Institute (TSI) with 12 regions, 12 sample points (cities). Detailed regional distribution is

presented in page 5.

Sampling Method

• Quota sample applied through regions on age, gender and SES

• Age and gender distribution quota reference: Turkish Statistical Institute

• SES distribution quota reference: Turkish Researchers Association (TÜAD)

Data Collection

Method

Quantitative Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) technique was applied through a

structured questionnaire of 10 minutes.

• Although there are always minor groups who are not aware of a well-known situation even when prompted, in

COVID-19 case everyone has heard of it. COVID-19 pandemia is defined as the most serious problem for

Turkey and the World. Key insight is that the public names the situation mostly with the phrase "coronavirus"

rather than "COVID-19".

• Television is the first media source that half of the public got first informed on "Coronavirus pandemia" and the

most preferred one for following the situation. Following this media channel, general public prefer to follow the

situation though "web sites" and "social media". Healthcare professionals, although do not have a share in

terms of generating awareness, has preference by 30% of public for following the situation.

as Source of Information

• TV preference, as a key source for situation follow-up is higher for 35-44 years age group and newspaper website preference is

higher among high SES groups (AB). Important to note that number of different media sources used to follow-up the situation

change according to socio-economic groups. High SES groups (AB) prefer nearly 3 different media sources (2,7) whereas middle

SES groups (C1C2) prefer 2 different sources (2,2).

• 2 out of every 3, perceives the current space given for coronavirus news is at just right level. Still there is a

group (1 out of 5) who underlines the space given is more than necessary and this view is higher among

• Knowing the fact that public awareness on key "rights" and "wrongs" for coronavirus changes everyday, insights

show that 10th day after the first case was officially announced in Turkey, 9 out of 10 people has a perception on

how critic is "social isolation".

was announced in Turkey. Within the same period, institutions which react as working from home as the whole

company is 15%. 14% of institutions started "work from home" approach for specific teams and the rest 11%

• Key precautions and actions focus on "stocking" and basically on "food stock" behavior. Important to note that

following the first week of COVID-19 announcement officially, "social distance" observed to be not a key action

for the public.

• Mask purchase and household cleaning agent stock is higher among males.

• 25-34 age group differentiate with a higher tendency to use credit/bank card instead of cash, whereas 18-24 age group

differentiates with no interest in toilet paper stock.

• Toilet paper stock tendency, on the other hand, is high among upper middle (C1) SES group.

• Drug stock behavior is higher among lower medium socio-economic groups (C2) and cancelling vacation reservations is

higher among high (AB) and upper middle (C1) SES groups.
