INTRODUCTION:I. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND.A. Daniel chapter 2--four kingdoms.

B. The Greeks.1. Alexander lived till 323 BC--His kingdom was divided into four part:

a. Macedonia under Cassander.b. Thrace & Asia Minor under Lysimachus.c. Syria under Seleucus.d. Egypt under Ptolemy.

2. Israel, as a buffer zone between these two powers(Syria and Egypt), was dominated first by one then the other.

a. The most severe treatment coming in the time of Antiochus Epiphanes.b. Upon resistance to Antiochus Epiphanes by the Maccabees liberty was won, which lasted

till Pompey conquered the Jews for Rome in 63 BC.3. Increase of knowledge became wide spread under Greek influence--growth of worldly

wisdom.4. The Greek attitude toward life--life was to be enjoyed--exploitation of pleasures--

hedonism.C. Romans.

II. THE WORLD INTO WHICH JESUS WAS BORN.A. The civilization into which Jesus was born was called "Graceo--Roman" because Rome was

E. Rome was very military minded.F. Some suggest several thing as providential provisions favorable to the coming of Christ and

his work: The Jewish dispersion, a universal language(Greek), The Roman Empire, and the decay of Pagan religions.

III.JEWISH LIFE IN PALESTINE

A. Palestine, the Holy Land, has an area of 10, 000 square miles, bounded on the north by the territory of ancient Syria, on the west by the Mediterranean Sea, on the East by Arabian Desert, and on the south by a semi-desert region.

B. Climate: Palestine had both a rainy and dry season. Quite hot at times.C. Natural divisions of Palestine--running north and south.

1. Maritime Plains or Coastal Plains--lie between the Mediterranean Sea on the west and Mountains of the east.

2. Western Highlands--Galilee, Samaria, Judea are on a Mountain plateau that runs north and south. Elevation varies from 1,000 feet to 2,500 feet. Each section contains about 1,600 square miles.

3. Jordan Valley contains three sections.a. Sea of Galileeb. Jordan Valley from the lower part of the sea of Galilee to the upper portion of Dead Sea.

The Jordan flows 110 miles, however, from the sea of Galilee to Dead Sea is actually 65 miles-- a very winding river. The Jordan valley is a deep depression and the river itself falls 610 feet below sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. "Jordan means "Descender." (Hester)

c. Dead Sea. Surface of the sea is 1,292 feet below sea level and "at one point is 1,300 feet deep"(Hester). No water flows out of it. No living thing can be found in it. It contains 25% solid matter.

4. Eastern Highlands--called Decapolis(10 cites). These cities are east of the Jordan and the land is much like that west of Jordan River.

D. Political divisions: Judea, Samiaria, Galilee, Perea, Decapolis, and northeastern Palestine.E. Roads.

1. Gaza to Hebron, to Bethlehem, to Jerusalem, to Jericho, and on up to Damascus. 2. Gaza to Joppa and on up to Tyre.3. Jerusalem north through Judea, Samaria, Galilee, on up to Capernaum. 4. Via Maris (Way of the Sea). From Damascus southwest, crossed Jordan north of sea of

Galilee, Capernaum, down to Nazareth, through the Plain of Esdraelon, on to Ptolemais.F. Economic life. Farming, vineyards, sheep raising and fishing.G. Jewish homes and home life were very simple.

1. Furnishings: Utensils, dishes, mats for beds, and possibly a few chairs.2. Foods: Milk, cheese, meat, and vegetables.3. Father was head of Family--Mother held in much honor.4. Family unit was very solid.

H. Rome in Palestine.1. Although conquered in 63 BC by Pompey, the Jews were treated well, but subjected to

humiliating tax.2. Rome placed Antipater as governor in Idumea.3. Herod the Great(Antipater's son) became governor of Galilee at 25 years old. 4. Herod's death (4 BC.) brought a division of his territory.

a. Herod's son, Archelaus, was an ethnarch till his death(6 AD).b. Procurator's ruled 6 AD to 42 AD.

1) The most important one was Pontius Pilate (26 D to 36 AD). c. Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Galilee and Perea (4 BC to 39 AD) killed John the Baptist. (Mt. 14).

VI. RELIGIOUS CONDITIONS.A. The temple, the glory of the nation, was located in Jerusalem having been built by Solomon

(1,000 BC). It was destroyed by Babylon (587 BC) and restored by Zerubbabel (516 BC) . Herod the Great built a third temple which was probably a refurbishing of Zerubbabel's temple.

B. Feast: The Jews had numerous feasts, but the most prominent were Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. Others were: Purim--started in the days of Esther and celebrated the Jew's victory over their enemies, The Day of Atonement--yearly sacrifice when the restoration of worship under the Maccabees in 165 BC.

C. Groups.1. Scribes--as an official group were interpreters of the law.2. Pharisees--Separatist--very strict--believed in the law, angels, spirits, and the resurrection.3. Sadducees--Richer--ruling class--materialistic--less religious than the Pharisee. Denied

angels, spirits and resurrection.4. Zealots--a political group.5. Herodians--political--favored the Herodian family.6. Essenes--Not spoken of in the NT.

E. Sanhedrin--Court of the Jews--religious and civil. (Sun--together; hedra, seat)ISBE1. Consisted of 71 members--They were from the families of high priest and former high

priest, elders, scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees. (ISBE).F. Religious matters were in a state of decline about the time of Christ.G. Messianic expectations were nurtured by a few: Simeon, Anna. But people differed as to the

without explanation. Also, numbers familiar to Jews.4) Purpose: To establish in the Jewish mind that Jesus was (is) the Messiah. Matthew

emphasizes the kingly nature of Jesus (Hester). NOTE: Mathew opens with the royal decent of Jesus-- through Joseph.

5) Much material is topically arranged-- parables, miracles, ect. Matthew gives the most detailed account of the sermon on the mount.

6) the arrangement of the contents of Matthew's account is not chronological, but puts material of similar content together.

7) Sections peculiar to Matthew: Chapters1,2; 9:27-36; 10:15,37-40; 11:28-30; 12:11, 12, 15-21, 33-38; 13:24-30, 36-52; 14:28-31; 16:17-19; 17:24-27; 18:15-35; 19::10-12; 20:1-16; 21:10f, 14-16, 28-32; 22:1-14; 23:8-22; 24:42-25:46; 27:3-10, 62-66; 28:11ff (ISBE).

a) Similarities are few: Jesus' suffering and death; feeding of 5,000 and walking on water (6:4-21)

b) Its form shows its difference from the Synoptics.1a. Prologue: 1:1-18 (Only book to have a prologue).2a. Scenes and discourses from the life of Christ. 1:19-12:50.

A. Note: The genealogy in Matthew is believed to be the royal line through Joseph, while thegenealogy in Luke 3 is believed to be the fleshly line through Mary. Both lines descend fromKing David.

B. Note: "of whom" (Mt. 1:16) refers to Mary, not Joseph. Jesus was not born of Joseph, butthrough Joseph, Jesus had regal right to the throne of David (see also Lk. 1:32, 33). A pointof grammar: a pronoun generally agrees with its antecedent in gender (masculine, feminine,or neuter) and number (singular of plural). "Whom" is singular in number and feminine ingender in the original language, therefore, would refer to Mary not Joseph.
