    REPAIR OF ;.R.P BOAT

% gelcoat finish may often suffer from fouling* dullness or faded color.

%s a rule* the original finish can be restored by rubbing 9ith a fine=

grade rubbing compound follo9ed by a good rubbing 9ith polishing

9a>. This treatment restores both the color and the gloss.

Sometimes it 9ill be found that the treatment described abo!e is not

enough* or perhaps it is desired to paint the boat another color. n such

a case it is necessary to sandpaper the surface do9n 9ith a fine=grade

    sandpaper0M$ or finer/ to gi!e it a mat finish. f this should e>pose

pores 9hich ha!e been encapsulated in the gel coat the part concerned

must be treated 9ith filler and re=sandpapering* polyester filler or resin

filler can be used. %fter sandpapering the entire surface should be

9ashed 9ith a strong sol!ent* e.g. acetone to get rid of such foreign

bodies as silicones* 9a>* and other contaminants 9hich may ha!epenetrated the finish. 8hen the preliminary 9or6 has been completed*

paint the surface 9ith polyurethane paint of the desired color.

Structural repair of this lifeboat must not be attempted by ships staff.

Should the boat be damaged* it must be remo!ed ashore to an

    appro!ed 9or6shop 9ith controlled atmosphere and qualified

procedures. The appro!ing authorities 9ill require the correct repair

procedures be confirmed by the original manufacturer to guarantee

    safety after repair.
