Dear Lifeline Plus Readers,

Throughout the last few months I have been struck by how precious and delicate our health can be. When we struggle with weight, chronic illness, or even just a bad cold, it effects how we maintain our relationships and

interact with our communities. Our energies are low; fatigue and possibly depression can result. When we are ill we know the value of health and the truth that the state of illness is not how we were created to function. We were made to thrive and be productive. Illness drains all these from us, and instead we spend our time focused on just getting the least amount of things accomplished. Illness can leave us feeling like we are failing our family, friends, and work. Imagine the struggle of those combating illness that not only deprives them of the right to thrive, but causes them to be outcast from their community. There are many diseases today that still carry this powerful stigma.

After months of not feeling well, I decided to do a detoxifying diet for a week. It was difficult to give up things I really enjoyed, like coffee for example. As the week finished, I was able to really digest the parallels between spiritual food and physical food. Maintaining our health, both spiritual and physical, takes sacrifice and the ability to say no to our wants and cravings. Nutritious food for our bodies and our spirits is a unique gift from our creator. He deeply longs to feed our souls with the truth of his word and creation, giving life to our bodies, minds, and souls. Every person on earth deserves to know this truth and experience the abundant life given through Jesus.

This edition of Lifeline Plus has articles about TB and leprosy in India, an article about being healthy in our work, and even one about how to keep your computer healthy (tech tips available online). Today, take some time to thank God for your health or for that of your family members. I hope you enjoy reading and that the articles help you realize how much God cares for both your spiritual and physical health.

Shalom,PJ Leisui

After reading the Editor’s letter in the June ’10 edition of Lifeline Plus, I realized that I had something special to share about my spiritual journey.

This year is significant for me, not just because it is YWAM’s 50th, but it’s my 20th year of being with YWAM. In 1990 I went to my DTS ready to finally live out the scripture in a way that I had never been able to do at my home church. The Discipleship Training School topics were like the most delicious food I had ever tasted.

The best point of celebration for me, beginning with my DTS and through the years with YWAM, is in 1999 when God was able to finally remove the root of bitterness that had grown deep in my life. This is my 10th year of beautiful deliverance! In the process I often felt like I was the worst sinner, having so many problems. But the result of reconciliation with Jesus compelled me to trust Him more and more every day, to celebrate my weakness, and just be myself. When I did this the Holy Spirit helped me to do the right things in my life. Post-deliverance He has given me rest to enjoy the luxury of being His child.

Today I am a wife and mother, desiring to honour the Lord with all my heart while serving my family. Just as God used my DTS and years in full-time ministry to shape me for future good works, my family is doing the same. To be a wife and mother without ministry outside the home doesn’t make me feel less special or acceptable. I give full credit to the Lord for what I am today, enjoying Him, not because of what I have but because of Who He is and the life He gave.

I would like to encourage you, even if you have big vision or responsibilities to continue to dispose the garbage of sin from your beautiful heart so that the Holy Spirit can come and reconcile everything to God. It is not the size of your heart that matters, but it is the size of His heart in you, that matters.

The story began in early 1998 as a group of six young people felt God leading them to start a Youth With A Mission centre in Indore. After

waiting almost two years the team was released to start their work in October 1999. The team and the scope of the ministry grew slowly in the first few years. They offered two Discipleship Training Schools a year. In January of 2001, a local truck washer came to the DTS centre in Indore. When he left his wife and children in his village, he didn’t know DTS was a 12-week training program. He had enrolled in the school thinking that the YWAMers were offering some sort of job. Over the course of the first week, he accepted Jesus as his Savior. Six months after finishing his DTS he returned home and shared his new faith with his wife, who also accepted Jesus. They returned to the DTS location and have been a part of YWAM’s work in Indore ever since.

This is just one of many miracles that God worked in order to redeem his people and expand the work in Indore. Throughout the last ten years the center has run 20 DTSes in Indore, in addition to Mandsaur, Ratlam, Bilaspur, Patna and Mhow. Over 600 students have been trained and sent to staff other YWAM ministries throughout India, even as far away as the Andaman Islands!

Today, YWAM Indore has a variety of ministries that are speaking into the needs of numerous communities. Some of the ministries include: a children’s home, giving tuitions, a TV program, house churches, mercy ministries, and much more. These pages could be filled with stories of God’s provision and direction over the last 10 years.

On September 17-19, 2010 Indore celebrated its 10th anniversary with gratefulness for all God has done and is going to do in the future. As the body of Christ we celebrate with them and say, “Well done! May you continue forward as you engage society in a dynamic and unique relationship with our faithful God.”

Leprosy has historically been feared, seen as hereditary, or dreaded as a curse, causing those afflicted to be outcast from their

community. In South Africa people with leprosy were forced to live in the prison/hospital on Robben Island from 1846-1931. Even after Dr. Gerhard H. Armauer Hansen discovered the disease in 1873, it was not initially understood as infectious. Despite great collaborative efforts, leprosy has continued to spread and still affects people, mainly the poor, throughout the world. “Overall numbers are in decline, but the disease remains a persistent health issue, with over 700,000 people infected worldwide.”1

Education is an effective tool in combating leprosy and the stigma that it carries. It was recently discovered that most people have a natural immunity to leprosy, making it one of the least contagious diseases. It can only be transferred through close and frequent contact with an untreated patient. Despite these facts, leprosy in India is still feared, and suffering people are shunned.

This disease has afflicted humanity for centuries, and its effects have left behind a terrifying image in the national memory of fear, mutilation, rejection,

Knowfor no

and exclusion from society. It is estimated that 2.5 to 3 million people in India are visibly and irreversibly disabled due to past and present leprosy. Even if India achieves the national prevalence rate of less than one in 10,000 people with leprosy, the disease will not be gone. India will still have new leprosy cases each year, which will continue to be a problem for the vast population in the future.

In India the high endemic areas, carrying 82% of the cases, are in Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh leprosy cases are highest in the Malwa region, with 169 per one lakh people infected. Indore is the largest city in the Malwa region, and it is the commercial capital with a population of 1,597,441 people.

In Indore there are over 1300 leprosy-disabled

people who live in 11 different colonies allocated exclusively for them by the government. They are forced to live separately because the majority of people consider leprosy to be a contagious, mutilating, and incurable disease caused by bad deeds committed in a previous life. Leprosy-infected people have typically found it difficult to find jobs because of this stigma, so they depend on begging to survive and to take care of their families.

The biggest barrier in eliminating the disease is ignorance. People are afraid to seek treatment because they are fearful of being expelled from their communities. Breaking these stereotypes with widespread awareness and access to the latest information will help eliminate the stigma associated with leprosy. The most effective way of preventing disabilities due to leprosy, as well as preventing further transmission of the disease, is early diagnosis and treatment. Together we can eliminate leprosy as a public health concern in India.

“…He pointed at a child who was covered with newspaper sheets on the street and he also pointed to a car that had a rain protection cover. And he said that we were supposed to fight against any form of social injustice. Because the same situation, same conditions that cause leprosy discrimination, were the same conditions that made our society protect a car more than a child.”

-- Artur C.M. De Sousa, remembering Francisco A.V. Nunes, “Bacurau”, the founder of MORHAN and IDEA’s first president for international advocacy2

For Suresh the leper colony in Chennai, India, was home. Both his parents had lived there for a long time, attempting to raise their children as they suffered with leprosy and mental illness. It was a hard life and nearly impossible to

find ways to earn a living. After Suresh’s mother died when he was 3 years old, an orphanage worker came to survey the colony, looking for families who couldn’t care for their children. Suresh and his brother went to live in the orphanage where they were cared for and received a good education.

Suresh’s father had been an alcoholic, suffering from leprosy, cancer, helplessness, and poverty until he committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train. Soon after this, at 19 years

old, Suresh moved out of the orphanage. In the confusion of these events some of Suresh’s friends shared the story of Jesus with him. He decided to do a DTS in order to learn more about Jesus, and it changed his life forever as he came to know God’s love in new a way. It was in DTS that God started to bring healing to his soul. After finishing DTS, he stayed to staff the school, and God placed a burden on his heart for his own people, those suffering with leprosy.

In 2002 Suresh journeyed to Indore to work in the leper colonies, despite the fact that he was alone and didn’t even speak Hindi. But he had God on his side and a passion in his heart for his people. He started by surveying the colonies with the help of one of the lepers, and from there he began medical work in three of the colonies.

The first two years were incredibly difficult because there was little money to finance the work and no committed staff. But after running a DTS among the colonies, slowly a small team of committed people was recruited. Today, YWAM Indore’s Lepers Relief work serves the people in five colonies through medical care, childcare, an orphanage, rehabilitation, income generation projects, and the DTS programme.

Suresh and his wife, along with their 10-month old twins, are thankful to God for the progress they have made in the leper colonies over the last 8 years. When asked if he is ever afraid of getting leprosy himself he replied, “I am never afraid because I am working for God. I have confidence that I will not get it. I know that when people are taking their medicines they will not spread the disease. My motivation to keep working is that there will be no more orphans because of leprosy.”

About 40 years ago, the government of Madhya Pradesh provided farmland to the people dwelling in eleven leper colonies in and around Indore. They were told to cultivate the land to provide

for themselves. The leper colony dwellers were very excited, but their happiness was short lived when they realized that the government had not provided any resources to cultivate the land, e.g. a farming truck, water supply, seeds, or other necessary things. The land was quickly deserted due to lack of resources.

In 2004, when the YWAM Indore Lepers Relief Work team visited the colonies and saw the unused land, they decided to work towards transforming the land from barrenness to fruitfulness. With an intention to “teach them to fish,” they first asked the people if they were interested in farming. The people came forward very willingly and agreed to cultivate the land, provided they got the necessary equipment.

The YWAM team miraculously raised the funds in a few hours and bought a second-hand farm tractor. It was in good condition, and they rotated it among the eleven leper colonies. The people quickly used the tractor to clear the land and get it ready for the planting season.

But there was still a problem. Even with the tractor to till the land, they had no water supply to the fields. How could they cultivate anything unless they had water?

The people came back to the YWAM team with the water problem. After carefully looking at the situation, the YWAM team realized that they needed to do something to help. Because Indore has very limited water resources, the only way to farm the land was to wait for rain, which can be very unreliable. With this in mind, the YWAMers decided to dig ‘Bore Wells’ to supply water to the farms. The wells worked instantly, supplying the much-needed water to the fields.

Since finishing these projects in 2005, the land given by the government of Madhya Pradesh has finally come to bear fruit, yield grain, and provide vegetables for the eleven leper colonies. The produce is distributed among the people living in the colonies, and the remainder is sold to raise funds for the following year’s preparations. Through YWAM, God has provided an ongoing blessing for these neglected people.

different ways. Second, I learned to take risks and challenges. I also learned how to balance ministry and study. Today, I am quite active in ministry and study; it is possible to do both and to be productive. I find this is encouraging to the other students here at UBS. They sometimes think that you can’t do ministry while studying.

Do you have any encouraging words for people who might consider doing a DTS?

Many of my friends noticed how much my confidence was boosted after YWAM, and they said they wished they had done a DTS before their B.D. YWAM really helps give confidence and a wide perspective on missions. Even some of my friends are planning to do a DTS after graduation. If you have 6 months of free time, go do YWAM’s Discipleship Training School.

Q&AName: Meneno Moses

From: Kohima, Nagaland

Currently: She is living in Pune while finishing the final year of a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) from Union Biblical Seminary (UBS) and serving as the Naga Christian Fellowship Chairperson.

When and where did you do your Discipleship Training School?

In July 2006 at the Lonavala campus.

Why did you decide to attend the DTS?

My cousin first introduced me to YWAM. I had seen her really change after the school and thought that would be good for me to do too. Also, most of my other cousins have done a DTS or been on staff with YWAM. They were all encouraging me to do the DTS, so I decided to go. I had a year break after my Bachelors of Arts (B.A), so I thought that was the right way to spend my time.

Where did you go during the outreach phase?

I went to Bhutan and Darjeeling. We did a lot of dramas and dances and were able to share the gospel with young people. One time we were sharing about Jesus in a local community and two people accepted Jesus. It was really unforgettable.

What did you learn during your DTS?

I have gained confidence in doing my best. DTS taught me it’s better to just be myself in class, with friends, and anywhere. I feel like something really beautiful from deep down inside me has come out. YWAM really helped me to realize I am special and unique. This was a new idea for me.

I also learned to be really sensitive in prayer and to the needs of other people. Plus I take my Bible and pen with me, so I can write down what God is teaching me in prayer or meetings. I have been passing on that skill to my friends, and they really enjoy it.

How have the skills you acquired in YWAM helped you in your work today?

I think one would be creativity in every thing I do. I feel free to do new things or the same things in

The Foundational Values of Youth With A Mission are the expression of our basic beliefs coupled with specific directives given by God since YWAM's beginning in 1960. They are recorded here in order to pass on to successive

generations that which God has emphasized to us.

These shared beliefs and values are the guiding principles for both the past and future growth of our mission. Some are common to all Christians everywhere; others are distinctive to Youth With A Mission.

The combination of these beliefs and values make up the unique family characteristics of YWAM- our "DNA." They are values we hold in high regard which determine who we are, how we live and how we make decisions.

KNOW GODYWAM is committed to know God, His nature, His character and His ways. We seek to reflect who He is in every aspect of our lives and ministry. The automatic overflow of knowing and enjoying fellowship with God is a desire to share Him with others.

MAKE GOD KNOWNYWAM is called to make God known throughout the whole world, and into every arena of society through evangelism, training and mercy ministries. We believe that salvation of souls should result in transformation of societies, thus obeying Jesus' command to make disciples of all nations.

HEAR GOD'S VOICEYWAM is committed to creating with God through listening to Him, praying His prayers and obeying His commands in matters great and small. We are dependent upon hearing His voice as individuals, together in team contexts and in larger corporate gatherings. This is an integral part of our process for decision making.

PRACTICE WORSHIP AND INTERCESSORY PRAYERYWAM is dedicated to worship Jesus and engage in intercessory prayer as integral aspects of daily life. We also recognize the intent of Satan to destroy the work of God and we call upon God's power and the Holy Spirit to overcome his strategies in the lives of individuals and in the affairs of nations.

As I looked at the people on the train I marvelled at the variation God put into his creation – tall and short; angular faces and round; dark skin and fair; straight hair and curly; fingers long and short; noses big and small.

Then the train stopped! We waited. 5, 15, 30 minutes and soon not only the physical differences showed but innate personalities became obvious! Frustration emerged from one corner, then Anger from another. Uncle Couldn’tCareLess just changed positions and went back to sleep, Aunty Empathy affirmed that the authorities knew what they were doing, Miss Panic was looking for terrorists, and Mr Detail was calculating how to get the maximum number of people out the exits in minimum time in case of emergency!

Well, that’s how God made us isn’t it – with individual physical features and unique personalities! While we all recognise physical features are God-created, we often forget he also fashioned our personalities and behavioural tendencies. He gave all of us natural ways of operating that we feel most comfortable with.

Have you noticed that when you do something you are “wired” for, the enjoyment is maximised? Yes, of course you have! Have you also noticed that the job gets done efficiently and effectively?

Then there’s the time when you are given a job that you are not “wired” for, i.e. outside your talents. It is often a disaster, takes too long, is ineffective and inefficient – if it gets done at all!

We all have talents – they are what God “hard wired” into us when he created us, to use in roles he prepares for us. Talents are not only for superstars. Christine remembers names. Kunal gets immersed in details. Daljeet forms relationships easily. Robert loves reading. They’re all talents, God-given and looking for an outlet.

"Then there’s the time when you are given a job that you are not “wired” for, i.e. outside your talents. It is often a disaster, takes too long, is ineffective and inefficient – if it gets done at all!"

I see many talented people, even in ministry, in roles that do not match their talents. Frustration follows, and that’s not what God intended. Experience has shown that matching innate talents with appropriate roles leads to effective outcomes. In that way people develop their strengths, enjoy their work, and get the job done.

Elizabeth joined Team because she wanted people to hear Jesus’ story. She had been an English teacher for 5 years and loved the interaction with the students and other teachers. She even spent time after school running a basketball club for underprivileged children. Because of her love for people many came to understand the love of Jesus.

Ramesh, Team’s National Manager, recognised Elizabeth’s talent and encouraged her to join Team. An opportunity of a lifetime – full time God work with Team! On Monday she arrived at the Team office, full of excitement. Because she was a teacher she was appointed as the “Schools Liaison Officer”.

For the next 7 months Elizabeth spent time on the phone to schools, writing emails to teachers and parents, making bookings and organising staff for sports camps. . . she was dying inside! After 7 months the bookings were dropping. After 8 months Elizabeth was arriving late and leaving early and bookings continued to drop. She became withdrawn, depressed, and her health declined.

At the 12 month review Ramesh realised this Elizabeth was not the Elizabeth he recruited. After reflection he invited her to join the camp sporting program. Her health improved, her smile returned, and many young people were coming to know the love of Jesus. (Oh, and bookings picked up because Freddie, the new “Liaison Officer” just loved his job!)

Facilitating God’s work means that talents, not convenience, should decide the roles we move into. God’s kingdom will be served best, and we will find ourselves most fulfilled, when we work in our strengths.

Nearly one in three people carry the bacteria, making tuberculosis the leading communicable disease in India. Accounting for 20% of the global burden, India has the highest TB incidence in the world with an estimated

economic impact of US $3 billion. There are 1.8 million new cases every year, and it kills close to 1,000 people every day in India.

Without early diagnosis and complete treatment, patients remain sick or die, and the disease itself mutates. Tuberculosis is easily curable when caught early, and treatment is provided for free in India. The Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP) achieved 100% coverage of the country by 2006 - meaning free treatment should be accessible to anyone anywhere. Yet, the statistics tell a different story.

“…People are destroyed from lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). There is no truer statement for TB. People are literally dying because they have no knowledge, or worse they have whole lies and half-truths. This is why it is so critical to have a wider involvement of community around tuberculosis.

Faith-based organizations (FBOs) working in communities are ideally placed to help make tuberculosis control efforts more effective. As FBOs work on the spiritual aspects of life, it can be easy to overlook the physical. Abundant life also includes a healthy one in this world. FBOs need to educate themselves on locally available treatments. Along with prayers made for a disease free life, passing on practical information and shattering myths, can save lives.

The tide will turn only when all of society is engaged – political / community leaders, industry / private sector, students, housewives and faith based organizations. Unless everyone joins forces, the tuberculosis battle will not be won.

Join forces – Stop TB.

ates. “I was especially struck by the statistics of how many

people in the world have TB, along with the fact that TB is treatable and that there are free medicines. The church has a responsibility to reach out to the whole man, and YWAM is uniquely positioned with our connections into communities where the incidence of TB is highest. This is a simple tool we can use to bring healing to the nation in body as well as spiritually. This can be an excellent tool that outreach teams and local ministries can use to serve the nation.” -Ron

"I am glad I attended the seminar. It opened my eyes to know how vulnerable one is to TB in India and also to take neccessary precautions and treatments when one is on YWAM outreaches. Also made me think how YWAM all over India could have open doors for help to the community that we witness, if we get permission from the government to start a DOT centre." -Francis

My name is Saji and my wife’s name is Priya. I’m from Kerala, and Priya is from Chennai, and we have been married for 8 years. My YWAM life started with Mercy Ministry in 1997. After serving there for a year, I

joined the HIV/AIDS ministry in YWAM Chennai. Since then I have ministered to HIV/AIDS infected individuals with a special focus towards widows and children. In 2005 Priya and I moved to YWAM Hyderabad to pioneer an HIV/AIDS ministry. Even in the midst of storms and tough times the Lord has been with us. Right now we are a team of 9 people, which includes three families and three singles. A few of our regular activities include:

*Home-Based Care for the HIV/AIDS infected and affected.-

*Teaching about HIV/AIDS and human sexuality.

*Counseling the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transsexual (GLBT) community in Hyderabad and also in other parts of India through the telephone and Internet.

*A drop-in Counseling Center.

*Practical help to the HIV/AIDS infected and affected by building toilets, cleaning their houses, and training them in fabric painting, etc.

We consider these actions of love as one of the best opportunities to show God’s love to them. Sooner or later, we see them coming after us wanting to know about the God we worship. Some say it is a dirty job, but isn’t it a wonderful dirty job?

Our vision is to start up a Home for the HIV/AIDS infected and affected children who are orphans. People approach us almost every week in search of a place for children who have been orphaned because of HIV/AIDS. We have been asking the Lord to open up doors for resources to launch the home. One of our ministry’s greatest strengths is that we have committed staff who are ready and willing to serve the children when we have the home.

In our free time, Priya and I cultivate our love of animals and nature. We have three cute dogs and a couple exotic birds. Our garden is full of rare flowers and vegetables. Despite the fact that we live in a rented house, we have planted many trees. Because of this our YWAM location has developed a high level of respect in our local community and our staff have fresh fruit and vegetables to eat.

We give all glory to God alone for using us to be a blessing to our city and the community!

If you are a soccer fan and enjoyed the FIFA World Cup, you can imagine the sense of excitement in South Africa, the host nation, where streets were filled with fans and their painted faces, blowing their vuvuzelas. And it was

in the midst of the excitement, that Youth With A Mission South Africa had our busiest month of the millennium, so far.

Kubio (pronounced Ko-boy) is a young African YWAMer who joined others from around the world for an aptly named Kick-Off outreach. YWAM teams, from every corner of the world, traveled to the tip of Africa with the aim of reaching out to international soccer fans that had gathered in thousands to support their teams. The goal was for sports teams, churches, youth groups, and other organizations to unite to bring hope to the people of Africa through all sorts of ministry. The long-term vision was to see partnerships formed with churches across the country through sports.

For Kubio this was the opportunity of a lifetime. As a boy, he never imagined his love of football would take him to the other side of his continent. Like so many of his peers, the homemade ball he had was his only toy; kicking it around was as much about escaping the harsh realities of life as it was about winning a game.

Kubio had fled to Nigeria from war in his native Liberia. Along with his pals, he played soccer every chance he got. When a YWAM DTS outreach team came to the refugee camp to present the message of Jesus, he and his friends halted their game long enough to listen. Kubio decided then and there that his true allegiance was to Jesus Christ - and his life changed forever.

Together with four friends, Kubio attended a DTS run by YWAM in the refugee camp. On outreach, they traveled to Port Harcourt where they met staff member and DTS leader Jackson Ndecheck. As Jackson got to know the group he thought, “These young men have a dream, and that dream is football.” Jackson was inspired to run a soccer-focused DTS especially for guys like Kubio. Encouraged by YWAM Nigeria’s National Director, Paul Dangtoumda, Jackson led the first Football DTS.

Most of the students came from poor families or were street kids with little hope for the future. As Jackson discipled them, he often said, “God wants you to use your talent to bring the gospel to other footballers. God wants you to be football ambassadors to the nations.”

With the lectures over, Jackson led the students on outreach to Accra, Ghana, to minister at the Africa Nations Cup. They worked with local churches running tournaments for local teams. But they didn’t just play football…

For the Love of the Game

they preached, performed dramas, danced, and drummed. They exhorted the youth to use their talents for God’s glory. Through the sport ministry, another congregation was planted in a village outside Accra.

Kubio and Jackson had similar hopes for their time in South Africa. Unlike other football fans, they didn’t see the soccer as a goal in itself, but as a wonderful way to connect with people. As fans enjoyed the game they love, YWAMers like Kubio and Jackson had an opportunity to introduce them to Jesus, the One who’s in a league of His own.
