In other newsA message from our Chief Executive

Chairman of Trustees Mike Woodcock christened Lifelites “the small charity with a big heart” and thanked members of The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists and our generous donors for their valued support, concluding: “Without you, we wouldn’t be here today.”

We ended 2015 on a high with a celebration of 15 years of Lifelites with our trustees and patrons Peter Bowles and Anita Dobson, as well as many supporters from down the years.

From our humble beginnings donating computers for children in hospices in England and Wales, we now support over 9,000 life limited children with the most magical technologies in every children’s hospice across the British Isles.

Capco Owners of iconic London venues Covent Garden and Olympia have chosen Lifelites to benefit from their corporate support. A golf day netted over £8,500 and staff voted for Lifelites as one of their Christmas charities raising a fantastic £30,000. Thank you everyone!

Christmas Appeal Our patron Rick Wakeman spearheaded a fundraising appeal amongst London Freemasons raising well over £20,000 in just a few weeks. This will support the work we do for children using hospice services across London. We are very grateful to Rick for his support.

GamesAid Once again GamesAid members voted for Lifelites as one of their eight charities to receive an incredible £70,500. Thanks to you all, to GamesAid trustees and the teams at Supermassive Games and Future Games of London.

We’ve been BLIPPED! We’re excited to be receiving support from Blippar – developers of the world’s largest interactive marketing tool. Some of the pages in this newsletter are blippable. To see how it works, look out for this icon:

We’ve struggled to keep this a secret and we’re pleased to say that if you’re reading our newsletter, you’re one of the first to know.

We’re delighted to welcome Dame Esther Rantzen to #TeamLifelites as our newest patron. She’s a great supporter of projects dedicated to improving young people’s

quality of life in the same way we do at Lifelites so she’s a perfect fit for our charity.

Esther is also the face of our new fundraising video, filmed at children’s hospices last year.

Amazingly, within this page you can watch a sneak preview of our new video which introduces Lifelites and showcases our magical technology. All you have to do is download the FREE Blippar app which enables you to have your very own private screening from your smartphone or tablet.

See for yourself…there really is such a thing as magic!

Dame Esther Rantzen stars in new Lifelites video

Three year old Rio was born prematurely with multiple conditions including Down’s Syndrome, chronic lung disease, partial deafness and two holes in his heart. Rio regularly visits St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice in Lincolnshire and was one of the first to try out the Lifelites mobile Magic Carpet.

The Magic Carpet is an interactive projection system that brings the outside world to children by giving them opportunities they may not otherwise have; now they can splash in the sea, fly a plane or play football with their brothers and sisters – irrespective of their disabilities.

Rio’s mum, Nicola, says: “Rio loves the Magic Carpet. He can’t walk yet so he bum-shuffles and rolls over and interacts with the features on the mat. He plays on it for long periods of time and loves everything about it - from splatting the beetles, waving his hands over and moving the water and playing with the fish.”

“ This Magic Carpet is a great sensory tool for Rio. It relaxes him when he lays on the carpet moving his arms and legs and hears the sound of the water. The number of different programs means he never gets bored. I can see how excited he gets and it makes me feel so happy watching him play. ”

Jordon Samuel – the next Spielberg

2015 annual Oscars event where Jordon and other film club

members showcased their work.

Lights, Camera, Action!

The Lifelites training team has racked up the miles delivering a range of training events to support hospice staff with their special Lifelites technologies. Their goal is to ensure the children get the full benefit of the magical technology your donations are helping to provide.

Richard House played host to a red carpet event last year when we delivered an ‘A List’ package of new equipment for their young people.

The top of the range touchscreen PCs, professional camcorders, large projector and 8ft screen enable the Living Films club enthusiasts to develop their passion for filmmaking.

Living Films is the brainchild of care worker Bernie Wighton who saw the benefit filmmaking could have:

“ Now the young people have a social life and can work with their brothers and sisters on their films. And it gives them a voice they never had before. ”

Jordon, 19, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and attends the weekly club. When it comes to movies and film making, Jordon comes alive. He is passionate about film and over the years has produced and starred in a number of short films with the help of the Lifelites

technology. Even though Jordan uses a wheelchair and has limited mobility in his hands, he can use all the specially adapted equipment to develop his film editing skills and produce his masterpieces.

When Jordan is in his creative element there’s no stopping him. Shahina Haque, Family Support Services Manager says:

“ This is where he can break all boundaries and go beyond limitations; it gives him a chance to escape from reality to where the impossible is made possible. Our young people would not be able to achieve such a high quality of work if we did not have the equipment donated by Lifelites. The projector and screen was put straight to use at our annual Oscars event where the families get to see the fruits of their labour and every child gets an Oscar. ”

Sue, Occupational Therapist Christopher’s – Shooting Star Chase

We have published a wide range of new resources for staff on our hospice staff section on the Lifelites website. Plus we are planning webinars and more topic specific training days on BEAMZ, Magic Carpet, Eyegaze and more.

“ The training has got us all so excited about the different possibilities we can explore to maximise the potential and experiences for the children who come here. ”

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

From Wi-Fi queries, resolving network issues, advice on how to set up Eyegaze to discussing new packages, our team is only a phone call away for children’s hospice staff so they can make the most of their magical technology for the children they work with.

And if an issue can’t be solved over the phone, our tech team will attend the site to get everything up and running asap. This service is also backed up by local techie volunteers.

Last year our tech support team took a whopping 82 calls from hospice staff in need of help with their Lifelites equipment.

In 2015 we provided14 New equipment training days

10 Eyegaze training days

9 Refresher training days

3 iPad training days

2 Residential Soundbeam training courses

Of course Lifelites doesn’t just give the equipment and walk away.

We’re the experts, so while we look after the complex equipment, the staff can concentrate on what they do best: caring for children and their families.
