RIt’s the most wonderful time of the year... Well I think it is. I adore everything about Christmas - the decorations, the carols, giving presents and cards, spending time with family and friends and of course good food. This months mini issue is dedicated to the Holiday Season. We have lots of lovely layouts, cards, mini’s and other goodies. I also got to have a chat with the queen of the December Daily the lovely Ali Edwards. We also have some of her tips to help you get started and keep going with your album (something I need to read because I am hopeless at finishing them, even though I start off strong, see my cover for last year below).
As the year winds up I am taking time to reflect on the past 12 months and the wonderful things that have happened both for me and for LPS. Back in January LPS was just a fun idea I came up with, I wanted to see all different kinds of inspiration in one place and I wanted the rest of the world to remember that we scrap down under as well. I thought I would do a couple of issues and that would be it but the way you have all embraced it has been incredible (the last issue had over 1.4 million hits - a number I couldn’t have even comprehended 11 months ago) and I am so grateful for all the kind words and support I have had from readers around the world and have been lucky enough to “meet” so many people who are as passionate about scrapbooking and memory keeping as I am. May you all have a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah or special Holiday and I look forward to seeing all your work and inspiration in the new year. Manda xxx

HelloHow did you come up with the concept of the December Daily?Back in 2005 I participated in Shimelle Laine’s Journal Your Christmas workshop and I loved the idea of working on a December album. I paired the holiday album idea with my love of documenting everyday life details and the idea of creating your pages in advance to simplify the process to create my own version of a December album. The albums I’ve made over the last six years are some of my very favorites in my collection. My kids love getting them out and looking through them during December.
You do both Project Life and December Daily, how do you separate the two? Do they overlap? For December Daily I focus on one story per day - sometimes it’s holiday related and other times it’s just an everyday story. For Project Life I focus on a week at a glance so often there are more than one photo for a single day (and I fill my Project Life with all kinds of things including notes, receipts, cards, things the kids bring home, etc). There always seems to be enough for both projects. I think people often want to over-complicate things by making it too rigid and too specific (this goes here and this goes here) - for me there’s a natural flow between the two. In December I work on December Daily each day and Project Life usually once a week. That also helps me see what extra things I can add to Project Life.
Ali EdwardsFor many scrappers around the world it wouldn’t be December without taking part in some form of Ali Edward’s December Daily™. The daily documentation of the most wonderful time of the year has become a tradition for many people who have embraced Ali’s approach to memory keeping by documenting the everyday moments that make up our lives. Ali took some time out of her crazy schedule to chat to Manda about December, memory keeping and life in general.
43
Finally what are you hopes/plans or dreams for the new year? This next year I’m hoping to go back and finish up a bunch of travel albums that I’ve been putting off because I’ve just been too busy with the business side of things. I’ll be running online workshops again including One Little Word (on my website aliedwards.com), Hello Story and 31 Things (both at BigPictureClasses.com). I’m hoping for a calm, creative year.
What is your favourite part of the holiday season?Feeling cozy. Twinkle lights. Seeing my kids light up. Making merry. The feeling of magic.
Regardless of what kind of project you are working on, what do you think is the most important part of the memory keeping process? The words and the photos. Over the years I’ve really seen that what I love most when looking back at old projects are the words. The words give context to the photos and any other memorabilia. Those two things are at the heart of memory keeping for me.
Where or who do you look to for inspiration?Pinterest always has good stuff (sometimes too much). I also enjoy visiting the galleries at Studio Calico and Two Peas for inspiration.
You are one busy lady with your design work, classes, blog, books and more. How do you find time to balance it all with family time?Just as many people go to a job from 9-5pm I try to treat my work the same way. This has evolved over time but I’ve gotten good about keeping my work to regular work hours to be able to enjoy my kids and attempt to be present for them when they are home from school. I have an assistant/nanny who helps me and family that also gets involved when I need to travel. I couldn’t do it without their help.
Ali’s top 9 tips for getting started on your December Daily
1. TAKE A DEEP BREATH. This project is not meant to cause additional stress or anxiety (there’s enough of that going around as it is). Take it one day at a time, one story at a time. Consider it an opportunity to slow down and savor what you most love about the holidays through words and photos (and some other fun crafty stuff mixed in if you want).
2. MAKE STUFF WHEN YOU CAN. Some days I put my layout together first thing in the morning – a certain story will come to light and I’ll decide that will be the topic for the day. You don’t have to wait until the end of the day to document a piece of it. Most days I put my pages together in the evening – yes, it often means staying up a bit later than normal, but for me, it’s been worth it over the years.
3. BE REALISTIC. I post everyday because I want to encourage you to keep going because the end result is really pretty awesome. You should have zero stress if you don’t/can’t/decide not to “keep up” with the daily posting, uploading, etc. Don’t worry if you miss a couple days – you can always add them in when you have a bit more time.
4. YOU DON’T HAVE TO CAPTURE EVERYTHING. I don’t approach December Daily™ the same way I approach Week In The Life. I’m not trying to document everything that happens from waking up to falling into bed. I look for ONE STORY per day – that’s it. Keep it simple – one little story per day adds up to a big collection of 25 at the end of the journey.
5. THIS IS NOT JUST A PROJECT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE STUFF GOING ON. And your life is not too boring to document. There’s so many things you could document in addition to where you end up on any given day.
6. TAKE THE TERM “DAILY” WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. If you have TONS of stuff happening there’s no rule that says you have to tell the story only on the day it happened. Use the word “daily” loosely – as a guide – if you go to the Nutcracker on Sunday but already have a story you want to share for that day then tell the Nutcracker story on a different day. No big deal.
7. HAVE FUN. Yes, have fun. If it becomes not fun, switch things up. Do something different. Put your camera away and just write or put down your pen and just take photos or have a day where you just play with your products to create a cool collage of memories on the page.
For more about Ali’s approach to memory keeping and her various projects visit her website:http://aliedwards.com/
Big Picture Classes offers a number of classes by Ali including Hello Story and 31 things:http://www.bigpictureclasses.com/alie.php
A limited number of Ali’s December Daily™ kit are still available through Studio Calico:http://www.studiocalico.com/shop/class-kits/december-daily-2013-with-ali-edwards
8. THINK ABOUT PERSPECTIVE. Consider what you wish you knew about someone in your life and how they spent their holidays. What was their perspective, what did they love most? Get those types of stories into your book. I’m continually thinking from the perspective of what I wish I knew, and what I most want my kids to know down the road.
9. SPEND THE TIME YOU MIGHT BE SURFING AROUND FOR INSPIRATION WORKING ON YOUR PROJECT. I know how it goes. Trust me, I know.

December 2013 Sarah Lancaster - France http://sarahboirin.blogspot.fr/
Sarah explains how she made this adorable tag mini:For my December Mini album I was
totally inspired by Marcy Penner. I used my Silhouette Cameo to weld two tags together.
I added the numbers from 1-24 on each tag and then cut these on Kraft cardstock.
I backed each number with some pretty paper and added a few embellishments
next to the number, leaving the right hand side of the page/tag free for a little photo or journal lines about that day. I machine
sewed around the numbers and some of the embellishments and lightly stuck the tags
together. I added a piece of Christmas fabric along the spine and some red and white
bakers twine through the holes to secure the mini album.

My favorite way to use tags is by experimenting with new products or by trying out new techniques. They are a relatively inexpensive way to fulfill your inner ‘artistic expression’. I keep all of my experiment tags and when I am looking for a special, one-of-a-kind embellishment, they are ready to use. These tags all started as a blank canvas, but by adding spray’s, inks, embossing powder and paste, I transformed the ordinary into something unique and special. I finish each tag by layering patterned paper, layered stickers, and chipboard embellishments.

Good Times Candy Pockets Audrey Pettit - USA http://audreypettit.wordpress.com
Materials: Authentique Joyous Collection: patterned paper, accent sheet, circle and scallop stickers, titles and phrases; Core’dinations: Cardstock, Pearlescent Cardstock; Trim: May Arts; Ink: Clearsnap; Other: Buttons, Binder Clips, Kraft Wrapping Paper.
Why Audrey loves these bags: I love giving out sweets at the holiday, and I’m always on the lookout for new and unique ways to package them for gifting. These kraft paper pocket pouches are great for holding baked goods and sweets, and make a fabulous gift all by themselves, or as an extra treat tucked into a stocking. I filled mine with my kids favorite candies and clipped them closed at the top, but you could also leave them open and insert a glassine or cello bag filled with larger treats, too. I think candy canes peeking out the top would be adorable

Fleur tells us how she made this adorable oranament: I love to recycle old packaging into pretty things, I made this ornament from some old packaging and created a snowy scene on the inside. I cut some trees and the cute little snowmen from patterned paper and used foam tape to add dimension. I then added some snowy glitter and sealed up the back. To finish it off I wrapped the outside with some pretty silver and cream twine.
