Where Help & Hope

go hand in hand.

Page 3: LifePath Systems 2012 Annual IMPACT Report

AS I LOOK BACK AT 2012, I am very thankful for the countless number of

individuals who gave so much to our agency: the Board of Trustees, dedicated staff,

sponsors, families, and volunteers. They continue to inspire me and make me hopeful

for our future.

The coming year looks promising. LifePath Systems is excited to be participating

in the State of Texas Medicaid Waiver under Section 1115 of the Social Security Act.

Also known as the Healthcare Transformation Waiver, this program will enable

Texas communities to focus on preventative care and will expand services to the

uninsured and/or underinsured populations.

Staff members have worked very hard throughout 2012 to develop some creative and

needed options. We are currently waiting for final federal approval of four large projects:

Integrating Primary and Behavioral Healthcare, Expansion of Behavioral Health Clinics

(more substance abuse treatment and specialty psychiatric care for individuals with developmental disabilities),

Peer Counseling and Community Education, and Field-based Services for Specialty Populations (Veterans,

Severely Mentally ill and Abused Infants). We know that these four programs will address some of the highest

unmet needs and will add considerable strength to all of our communities.

A second promising accomplishment is the development of the LifePath Systems Foundation. The Foundation’s

Board is up and running with knowledgeable individuals

dedicated to our mission. Fundraising activities and

community awareness initiatives are already underway to

increase access to services. Helping to combat the stigma

associated with mental illness or developmental disabilities

and increased awareness of the need for greater funding are

two of the LPS Foundation’s goals.

The vulnerable in our community need to be heard and supported to become independent, productive members

of this great county we live in. Our annual report is a chance for you to see LifePath’s impact on individuals of

all ages. Your feedback about unmet needs and how to provide more and better care is always welcomed. Our

collaborations with other groups and organizations is valuable and ongoing.

We are serving your family members, your neighbors or someone in your church, school or at your job. By

becoming a volunteer, a donor, an advocate, you carry the torch for those who are unable. LifePath Systems will

continue to make a difference in the lives of many, and with your help we can serve so many more. I invite you to

pick up the torch and join us as we embark on a new year with new potential that will provide help for today and

hope for tomorrow.

J. Randy Routon, Ph.D.CEO

Helping to combat the stigma associated with mental illness and increase awareness for greater funding needs are two of the Foundation’s goals.

Dear friends, families and advocates,

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Early Childhood Intervention

Our Behavioral Health staff provides effective and compassionate treatment to children and adolescents with a wide range of mental health diagnoses, and adults with depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or substance use disorder.

Our team consists of highly qualified and experienced psychiatrists, licensed counselors, registered nurses, and caseworkers. Our goal is to help the client understand his illness, provide treatment to reduce symptoms and improve functioning, and help to identify and connect with the supports necessary to live a full, happy life.

Behavioral Health

Our mission at LifePath’s IDD division is to assist people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in our community.

Our commitment is to provide the highest quality support possible. Our dedicated and well trained staff offer individualized supports for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as mental retardation, autism or pervasive developmental disorder with services including service coordination, respite care, community supports, day habilitation and supported employment, as well as providing 24 hour care for individuals in four community residential settings.

Early Childhood Intervention (ECI), ages birth-3 years. Research shows that if we can impact a child’s life in the first few years, the most critical time in a child’s development, then we can impact the adult that child will become.

Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) helps babies and toddlers, ages birth to 3, with disabilities or delays in their development. ECI supports families through education and family services to help their children reach their potential. A highly trained staff provides extraordinary care for babies and young children, including developmental services, service coordination, speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition services & social work services.

LifePath Systems - WHAT WE DO

“I HAD STARTED DRINKING in 1998. I did not drink because things

were bad, things were actually good. I was a custom homebuilder, building

CLIENT SUCCESSback on track!

SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES at LifePath Systems’ McKinney and Plano clinics include substance abuse screenings, individual counseling, intensive and supportive levels of

million- dollar homes. I was happily married and had a 2 year old son. I soon found myself in an affair fueled by alcohol. I made

some very poor choices during this time and lost a great wife. I lost getting to see my son every day and being with him.

After my first DWI, I received a slap on the wrist and paid

some fines. I received no treatment. I continued with this

lifestyle for several more years, even started drinking at lunch,

drinking alone and having problems at work. I received

a felony DWI. I was out of money, so I was given a court

appointed attorney. She cared about me, and convinced me

to enter a DWI/Drug Court program and attend outpatient

counseling. I selected LifePath Systems.

My life has changed so much since attaining sobriety. I have

been blessed. I know if I had not been able to stop drinking,

I would be dead or in prison. I thank God that all of these

people cared enough about me to help me get my life

under control and back on track.”

LifePath Systems is proud to partner with Mental Health First Aid USA, the groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand

and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S., introduces

participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews

common treatments.

Those who take the 12-hour course to certify as Mental Health First

Aiders learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources

and knowledge to help an individual

in crisis connect with appropriate

professional, peer, social, and

self-help care.

Studies have shown MHFA’s

impact on the community included:

increased help provided to others, increased guidance to professional help, improved concordance with

health professionals about treatment and decreased stigmatizing attitudes. Since our launch, we have

conducted several training sessions and continue to promote and expand our program to public service

providers, churches, and community leaders interested in this vital topic.

Participants gained a better recognition of

mental disorders, better understanding of

treatments, more confidence in providing

help to others, improved mental health

for themselves, lessened stigmatizing

attitudes and decreased social distance

from people with mental disorders.

EARLY CHILDHOODINTERVENTION WORKS!!

“When the Early Childhood Intervention (ECI)

staff first began working with my son Micah, he was 15

months old, completely non-verbal other than grunting

sporadically, wouldn’t make eye contact, and had other

challenges. Our ECI caseworker and therapists were great.

They jumped right in, working with Micah and our family, and

over the last year and a half have tirelessly worked to give us

the tools and exercises necessary to help him progress.

Along with helping Micah to learn to function and speak, they

have all been a wonderful source of encouragement and a joy to

work with. I am overjoyed to say that Micah is now a normal

3 year old boy - he makes eye contact with everyone, follows

“ECI has had a part in introducing us to a little boy we may have never known

without their help!”

(cont.) extensive direction, and is speaking in full

sentences! We truly do praise the Lord for the gift He has

given us through ECI. We could never repay them for the

service they have given. They truly are wonderful!!”

FOR 27 YEARS LifePath Systems (LPS) has provided invaluable services to people with behavioral health issues and intellectual developmental delays. With an appointed Board and federal funding, the agency's dedicated staff has built and nurtured a solid foundation, working tirelessly to care for its patients and their families. However, funding has not kept up with the rising demand of this growing patient population. But it's a new day at LPS. Hope, inspiration and creative collaboration have come together to form the new LifePath

Systems Foundation (LPSF). And it is my distinct honor to lead this newly formed group. Our goal is to raise money and bridge the gap between the current federal funds and what LPS needs to provide quality care. Established in November 2012, LPSF has already achieved great progress. LifePath Systems Foundation is dedicated to raising funds and building a stronger community by ensuring access for all people who need services for intellectual and developmental delays, behavioral health and substance abuse issues. With an estimated 9,000 families to currently serve in the midst of financial, societal

and political challenges, minds and hearts are ripe for advocacy. LPSF is dedicated to increasing awareness and education for not only our constituents whose lives are daily impacted by these physical, mental and behavioral health mountains, but also for those who don't yet know about LPS. We're ready to spark those advocates into action so that one day all people who need our services will receive quality care and no longer be placed on long waiting lists - so that people who are in desperate need of care don't fall through the cracks and land in full-on crisis where lives and hope are lost.

So, tell your families, friends, neighbors, colleagues and local politicians to be on the lookout. LPS Foundation is on a mission and we're going to need their help to make it happen. Full speed ahead, SUSAN YOST, CHAIRLIFEPATH SYSTEMS FOUNDATION

This year, the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Marshalls, and LifePath Systems started an Internship Program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. During the four week internship, the individuals learned about workplace safety, customer service, cultural diversity, harassment, preparing for employment and more.

Upon completion, the store manager along with LifePath Systems’ staff gave each intern a performance evaluation with employment readiness recommendation. Each participant received a certificate of completion, and all of our interns were hired by Marshalls!
