A Slice of History-Los Cabos and Its Tormented Past

Known today as one of Mexico’s fastest growing tourist destinations, Los Cabos is not all beaches, nightlife and golf. In addition to all that, the area also has rich history and a booming cultural scene. And while Cabo San Lucas is the star of Los Cabos’ modern history, in the past, San Jose del Cabo, known as the colonial sister, was the center of happenings. In fact, when Hernan Cortez landed nearby in modern day La Paz in 1535, San Jose was inhabited by the na-tive Pericu. The San Jose Estuary would provide fresh water for Manila galleons returning from the Philippines. Jesuit priests founded Mision San Jose del Cabo de Anuiti in 1730. Not all Pericu were enthusiastic about ac-cepting monogamy or changing their way of life, leading to a 30-year-long uprising throughout the Southern Baja California peninsula.

Moved three times, the mission was destroyed in the 1793 flood, rebuilt at its present location, and heavily damaged in the 1918 hurricane. The final reconstruction was completed in the 1950s. Above the entrance is a tile mural portraying the brutal murder of the mission’s founder, Padre Nicolas Tamaral. San Jose was also the site of a siege during the Mexi-can-American war of 1848-1851; Boulevard Mijares is named after the Spanish lieutenant killed in the battle.Almost three hundred years later, the downtown, called El Centro still carries the stamp of its colonial past. The focal point is Plaza Mijares, while the hilly side streets’ old homes have been converted into courtyard restau-rants, art galleries, boutiques and souvenir shops. Next time you visit San Jose, try to see it through its interesting historic past.

Uncovering Baja Art SceneWhether you are an avid art collector, an artist yourself or you just appreci-ate art, In Los Cabos you’ll find countless opportunities to enjoy the works of local and international painters, sculptors and artisans.

San Jose del Cabo

San Jose’s historic Art District is a great place to start. Join the Art Walk, a weekly event held by a dozen or so galleries every Thursday from 6-9pm. You’ll be able to view artwork in a variety of media and meet the artists, all while enjoying a glass of wine and a scrumptious appetizer. This event is free of charge and open to the public. No reservations are necessary.

Cabo San Lucas

In Cabo San Lucas, in addition to plentiful art galleries, art can be experi-enced in many other ways. Every full moon, for example, Cerrito del Tim-bre becomes the site for Noches de Plenilunio, a cultural event with poetry readings, concerts and other inspiring activities. Every Sunday, Plazarte (see page 10 for more details) gathers locals and visitors for a family event full of art performances such as theatre and folkloric dance, as well as photo-graphic expositions, music and arts & crafts sale. For cinema lovers, Amelia Wilkes Plaza is the place to be, where every Sunday Cine Club Lumiere presents the best of international cinema. Admission to all featured events is free.

About an hour’s drive north of Cabo San Lucas, lies a true bohe-mian art colony. Todos Santos, designated by the Tourism Secretary of Mexico as Pueblo Magico (magical town) in 2006, draws visitors with its old Mexico charm. The local community keeps its cultural agenda busy with numerous gallery shows, art workshops, festivals and other cultural events. Unexpected Cultural Gems at Los Cabos’ Organic Markets

In sync with the growing ecological awareness of our community, organic and farmer’s markets are becoming very popular around Los Cabos. At these weekly events you may expect to find fresh organic fruits and veg-etables from local farms, delicious food and drink, baked goods and pre-serves. But what makes these organic markets even more enticing is that, in addition to food for the body, they also offer food for the soul such as original art, jewelry, arts and crafts, and Baja books just to name some. While vacationing in Los Cabos, visit an organic market for an authentic cultural experience. Your best options are:

SAN JOSE DEL CABO ORGANIC MARKET: Saturdays from 9am-3pm
