Reading Scores SoarContinued from front cover

At the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, 100% of the second grade students at Mother of Sorrows Elementary in Los Angeles had something in common. They all scored below grade level in reading comprehension. By the end of the school year, Ms. Beltramo reports 64% of these second grade students had reading comprehension scores at or above grade level and more than half the students doubled their scores. One student even ended the year at the 4th grade reading level. “This is remarkable progress considering nationally by 3rd grade only 24% of children from low-income families can read,” stressed Ms. Beltramo. (At Mother of Sorrows, 98% of the students’ families live below the poverty level.) The good news didn’t stop with the 2nd grade students. Last school year, only 19% of the 8th grade students were at grade level in reading comprehension. By year-end, 71% of these students were at or above grade level with 52% at or above 9th grade level. In August 2010, the 6th grade class began using the program, at which time only 34% of the students were at grade level in reading comprehension. By March of this year 84% were at or above grade level. Congratulations to the students, parents, teachers and staff at Mother of Sorrows for a job well done.

On Friday, December 17, 2010, a truck full of frozen turkeys and all the fixings were unloaded into the Maple Elementary Cafeteria where Vanir Volunteers and several Maple Parents stood ready to put together 130 Holiday meals. The late H. Frank Dominguez believed that children did better in school when their parents participated in their education. The Vanir Foundation carries on his legacy by providing parents, who participate in their child’s Parent-Teacher Conference and other school activities, with boxes overflowing with ingredients for a holiday meal.“This was the first year that we offered our parents this opportunity and attendance at parent-teacher conferences increased 10%,” shared Maple Principal Lorena Carrillo. “When more parents get involved, this allows us to engage them in a much more significant way.”

Today, thanks to the donors of the Vanir Foundation, the Tyrrell Dragons have a bright Student Store full of books, school supplies and fun things like glitter rings, finger puppets, dinosaur rubber bands, and sports ball pencil sharpeners. Early mornings or after school, students line up eager to trade in their Dragon Dollars. “It is rewarding to see our children learn about being responsible with their money, how to save and how math is important in everyday life,” stressed Tyrrell Principal, Marvelyn Maldonado.“The Student Store has been a big incentive this year,” reports Principal Maldonado. “Teachers love the fact that they do not have to constantly worry about incentives for their students, and our children love shopping with their Dragon money!”

Stocked Full of Motivation Continued from front cover

My son is a student here at Maple School, and he is in second grade. I am very grate-ful for the food basket that was provided to us December 2010.

This basket of food was much help, and my family was very happy for it. We shared a delicious meal with all of our family and friends. It was a beautiful Christmas filled with joy. May god bless you all, and once again, thank you for sharing with us.

Sincerely, Christina Herrera(Third from the left)
