TRAINING

As Above So Below by Odette England

Fresh from it’s debut in New York, Odette’s show marks a study of geography, belief systems and the flowsof nature. The significance of the phrase‘as above, so below’ is that it is one which indigenous cultures live by: a belief that the heavens and the earth are the foundation of all creatures. Land and sky are more than just geographical icons; they are mirrors in which they see themselves reflected.

The images document the vast desert landscape of Southern Australia – a traditional home of indigenous peoples – from directly above and below a single standing point, brought together as a double exposure. Odette England combines what otherwise exists separately, to explore the significance of primal ‘middle ground’ where humankind resides.

Please note: There will be restricted viewing on Fri 24 Sept due to an event.

The Priory by Andrew Lacon

The Priory was a troubled housing estate in Dudley, in the West Midlands. Andrew documented the abandoned houses before the ordered demolition razed the buildings to the ground. Mostly built in the 1930s, the estate was a solution to slum clearances, but by the early 1990s houses on the estate had fallen into disrepair and the area was plagued by vandalism, drug dealing, burglary and graffiti. Dudley Council were responsible for re-homing residents which, for many, was an unwanted move, as they had spent the majority of their lives on the estate. Plans for rebuilding the estate are currently underway.

These images are much more than a typological study of the area, they provide an insight into the ideologies of residents and town planners, and raise questions about the response of councils in England to socio-economic problems.

Contact by Jasroop Grewal

With this new body of work Jasroop explores techniques of image creation. Her final images are designed to look like contact sheets. The sheet is filled with individual images depicting a coherent series from the same scene, which when all viewed together, make up an entire image.

Each photograph in the contact sheet was taken from the same spot, with the angle of the camera being adjusted slightly to record the next section. Jasroop purposefully avoided creating an exact replica of the entire scene, in order to make the viewer really look and see everyday sights with awe and wonder.

As gigs on the Scottish island dry up, Tatischeff travels to Edinburgh in search of employment, and Alice runs away to join him in the big city.

As the culmination to the Music on Screen season we will be showing the musical Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper). Set in a shadowy, stylised and dreamlike Victorian London, the story of Mackie ‘The Knife’ Messer and Polly Peachum is timeless, and the combination of playwright Bertolt Brecht’s biting social satire and composer Kurt Weill’s compelling music is as fresh as ever. Cast: Lotte Lenya, Rudolf Forster.

New for Light House...

Opera live from The MetCome to Light House from this autumn and join the Saturday audiences at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 12 live high definition transmissions from the 2010 – 11 season, starting in October with new productions of Das Rheingold and Boris Godunov, and ending in May 2011 with a new production of the second opera in the Wagner Ring Cycle, Die Walküre.

Das Rheingold

Two unparalleled artists join forces to create a groundbreaking new Ring for the Met: Maestro James Levine and director Robert Lepage. The cycle launches with Das Rheingold, the prologue to Wagner’s epic drama. “The Ring is not just a story or a series of operas, it’s a cosmos,” says Lepage (La Damnation de Faust), who brings cutting-edge technology and his own visionary imagination to the world’s greatest theatrical journey. Bryn Terfel sings the leading role of Wotan for the first time with the company, heading an extraordinary cast.

Levine, who has conducted every complete cycle of Wagner’s masterpiece performed by the Met since 1989, says, “The Ring is one of those works of art that you think you know, but every time you return to it, you find all kinds of brilliant moments that hadn’t struck you with the same force before.”

Running time: 2hrs30 Composer: Richard WagnerSung in German with Met titles in English(Please note: casting subject to change)

Boris Godunov

Mussorgsky’s soulful spectacle Boris Godunov is given a new production conducted by Valery Gergiev and directed by Stephen Wadsworth. Bass René Pape will undertake the title role for the first time at the Met, leading a strong Russian cast, including Ekaterina Semenchuk, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Evgeny Nikitin and Vladimir Ognovenko in a work which captures the suffering and ambition of a nation and is also a breathtaking showcase of the Met’s formidable chorus.

The libreto is based on an historical drama by Aleksandr Pushkin and Nikolai Karamzin’s History of the Russian State. For many, Boris Godunov is the greatest of all Russian operas because of its originality, drama, and characterisation, and for the powerful psychological portrayal of Tsar Boris.
