It certainly has on mine. As I do not pretend to be a scholar, and so mine has been a slow, but steady, study of the his- tory and biography of Washington: his life, the things he stood for, and why he is still such an inspiration today. In my day and age, patriotism was taught from elementary school onward. Thus George Washing- ton, being our foremost founding father, was the subject of many lessons. Being so impressed with the legacy of Brother Washington, and more especially his connection to Masonry, caused me to jump at the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. That is just one way in which his legacy influenced my life’s direction. This leads me to the point of this short article; does the legacy of Brother George Washington continues to influence individu- als today? Recently, I was asked to CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 LIGHT The 2020 Washington’s Birthday Gala O n February 22, 2020, the Memorial held its annual Gala Celebration of George Washington’s Birthday. The evening began with a special reception for Char- ter Members of the George Washington Memorial Society in the George Washington Museum on the fourth floor. The general reception took place simultaneously in Memo- rial Hall. Attendees then enjoyed an outstanding concert of classical and popular music by the String Quartet of Northern Virginia (see photo on page 3). Aſterward, a banquet was held in Grand Masonic Hall. Guests enjoyed a fine meal, accompanied by spirited toasts to Freemasonry, to the United States of America, and to George Washington. Our President, J.F. “Jeff” Webb, presented the George Washington Memorial Award to S. Brent Morris, Ph.D. Dr. Morris, a well-known Masonic author and the Managing Editor of The Scottish Rite Journal, gave an enlightening talk titled “In Praise of Punctuation: The Case of the Missing Semicolon,” which revealed how a typographi- cal error led many scholars to believe that George Washington acted as Grand Master Pro Tempore during the 1793 laying of the cornerstone of the United States Capitol. Prior to the Gala, two other events took place at the Memorial: the George Washington Symposium was held in the Memorial’s Theater, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Shrine and Scottish Rite displays in the Memorial's Family of Freemasonry Exhibit. Each year, the George Washington Symposium features three informative lectures about Washington and his milieu. This year, the presentations were “Precursors of and Influences on the 1793 U.S. Capitol Cornerstone Ceremony,” by S. Brent Morris; “George The Birthday Gala guests enjoyed a wonderful evening in Grand Masonic Hall.

The northeast corner of the Memorial’s Doric portico requires not only cleaning, but some structural repair. Visible in this photograph are two fractures that are slated for repair during the first half of 2020. Your participation in the Landmark Century Campaign enables all of these important projects to be supported.
