The Philippine Red Cross gave the PCG the responsibility of operating the 2 Philippine Red Cross amphibious LARC-V

Page 2: Light Resupply Amphibious Carrier Feedback

The LARC-5 (Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo) is an Army amphibious vehicle originally used in the 1960's to ferry supplies from

ships to shore. Its total possible load is 5 tons (hence the five after LARC). The head of the Transportation Corps, MG Paul Yount,

directed the US Army Research Command (USATRECOM) in 1956 to build a boat with the ability to drive on land. The prototype

was built in July 1959 with final design produced in 1963.

They LARC V did not handle the way it was expected so, many were given to around 35 reserve companies. The active duty 165th,

305th, 344th, 458th, and 461st Trans Co.s received them. The LARC V is primarily used by the Beach Group in surf-zone salvage,

recovery, and command and control roles, and for the transportation of personnel and equipment. The craft are in excess of 35

years old and require extensive maintenance and repair, nevertheless their retention or replacement is considered essential.

The LARC V is a single-screw, four-wheeled, self-propelled, diesel-powered amphibian. It has a cargo capacity of 10,000 pounds

and a troop capacity of 20. It has a range of 200 nautical miles on land and 40 nm on water. It can attain speeds up to 22 miles

per hour on land and 8.5 knots at sea. 12 LARC V craft are presently embarked aboard MPF ships.

The LARC(V)is an amphibious lighter constructed of aluminum, 35 feet long, 10-ft wide, and 10-feet 2 inches high. The current

weight of the craft is approximately 20,000 pounds (without cargo). Power is furnished by an 8 cylinder Cummins V-903 Engine

(rated at 295 BHP at 26000 rpm).

The craft is capable of operation in temperate, tropic, and arctic climates, of transversing sand and coral beaches, unimproved

roads, off-road terrain and maneuvering through a surf of 10-foot breakers. The engine is located in the stern over the propeller

and drives forward to a centrally located transfer case where power is transmitted to all four driving wheels and/or the propeller.

The suspension is rigid and the 18.00 x 12 ply off-road tubeless tires provide the only shock absorption. The propeller operates in

hull tunnel, which is fitted with a nozzle to improve efficiency. Baseline speeds for the craft were 9 mph in water and 30 mph on

land with full rated load of 5 short tons.

Thirty-five modifications have been identified that will form the nucleus of a SLEP for the craft. This SLEP would improve safety,

reduce crew fatigue, improve reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and increase service life. Studies must be conducted to explore

future capabilities to conduct surf zone salvage, recovery, command and control, and the transportation of personnel and

equipment.

The PMC already operates these types of vehicles.

With activation of new riverine units, it can't hurt to have more of these.

Can those LARC be used as amphibious vessels to service the islets and atolls from Pag-asa Is?

When I was young my town had the most number of DUC-W (forerunner of the LARC) in the

whole province ( 4 total ). Everytime the Cagayan River overflooded, calls from nearby towns

were aired through the AM radio for the DUC-W to come and rescue people stranded ( there

were no tel. land lines and cell phones were unheard of ). They were primarily used by Chinoy

Rice Traders to transport 'palay' gathered at warehouses from the other side of the Cagayan

River to rice mills in the town proper. Three were subsequently lost to ill maintenance and the

only survivor was christened "River Rover". It was rebuilt from two DUC-W bought from

Malabon and not a single bolt or nut was a replacement part. Everything in it was original.

I am pretty sure the LARC has more capability than the WW II DUC-W.

A DUC-W retired from the USN and used as a pleasure 'boat' by its civilian owner.

Were LARCs were meant to traverse those distances?

If I'm not wrong, this is a LARC-5. Singapore operates a small number.

The wheel diameter must be at least 1.5m. The whole thing was bigger than a bus.

I rode in one during my service. It was a night recce for a suitable landing spot. Very stable in

water, but a roller coaster on land.

The marine/navy often use that LARC in Marikina and Candaba pampanga during typhoons for

rescue ops.

Hi ANS have'nt tangled with you for a long time since since kawal filipino forum back in

2000. yes ur right in having lesser ammo in the LVTH6 to compensate for the weight of

the added frontal armor is a solution. the H6 does have heavier weight than the P5 version

simply becuse of the turret and the 105mm how. wit regards to personnel its not designed

to carry personnel - its the P5 that does its role. We feel so far that the added armor of

580 kilos is still within its design but sacrifice the basic load of 105mm ammo it carries.

however it may be compensated with the LARC-V vehicle in carrying the additional ammo

in the 5th wave to support its requirements in an amphibious opns. we had operationalize

2 with a third coming this september. they are all inter-related as a system.

in todays issue of manila times, a Philippine Marines Shark is on the loose in Malabon:

The needs and interests of the Filipino is primary while that of foreigners is secondary.

However, some Filipinos are still uneasy about this and would rather be the apologists or defenders of foreign

interests.

For those in the U.S., you saw and read how our PMC made use of these equipments. Might be

able to do something to increase the numbers:
