Where were you in May 1997?

Back then, the only way to look at campaign contributions was to present yourself in person at the State Board of Elections. There, you could request to examine campaign finance disclosures – paper documents that filled a fleet of battleship gray file cabinets.

Don’t forget your pencil and legal pad.

But change was afoot.

A brand-new nonprofit with a clunky name – The Virginia Public Access Project – was busy keypunching paper reports into a relational database. In mid-June 1997, VPAP posted the searchable database online.

Today, we gather to celebrate our progress and marvel at the broad array of organizations and individuals – often on opposing sides – that have come together to invest in greater political transparency.

Once a year, VPAP brings together Virginians from differing points of view to share some laughs – and to reflect on our shared responsibility in the political process.

Whether you can recall the “old days” or you got involved in politics only recently, we hope you enjoy this opportunity to visit with friends and mix with others. If we can laugh together, perhaps we can more effectively work together.
