Principals Message Wasnt it lovely to enjoy a long weekend? It is amazing how that extra day can really lift your spirits and give that burst of refreshment, especially when we were blessed with a couple of beautiful sunny days. I had the joy of being able to get away for a couple of days and engage in a few activities with my family, which was great once I got there, but the start to the weekend was a bit painful. Heading to Sydney on Friday evening and joining the peak hour traffic along Pennant Hills Road was a reminder of why I enjoy living on the Central Coast so much. Im not the fittest bloke going around these days, but I calculated that I could have jogged from the end of the freeway at Wahroonga to the beginning of the M2 at Pennant Hills faster than I drove it that night. We crawled along. While in that situation I accepted there was nothing I could do but turn on the radio, listen to some music, and relax. However, I observed a number of others who didnt seem to be so accepting of their situation and were determined to do whatever it took to move through the gridlock a little faster. On a couple of occasions this proved to be a real source of angst to other commuters. I didnt realise a horn could be held on for as long as I heard on that night. I am guessing from my lip reading, that the driver blasting his horn was not wishing the car that cut in front of him all the best for a lovely weekend. Maybe I am just getting old, but when I drive these days it seems to me that more and more people are angry and impatient. I encourage my children to try not to respond to road incidents because you just cant be too sure how the other driver may respond these days. What a contrast my time on the road over the weekend was to the well-known verses I was reminded of on Monday as I read from Galatians 5. As Christians, we often dont need to say anything to be a powerful witness to others. Just living a Spirit filled life that demonstrates traits such as kindness, patience and self-control can be a huge contrast to the way we see many people act today. Pray that as we engage with each other and the wider community that we might live Spirit filled lives, and that others would be drawn to The One who strengthens us to do so. Principal’s Message Wasn’t it lovely to enjoy a long weekend? It is amazing how that

extra day can really lift your spirits and give that burst of

refreshment, especially when we were blessed with a couple of

beautiful sunny days.

I had the joy of being able to get away for a couple of days and engage in a few

activities with my family, which was great once I got there, but the start to the

weekend was a bit painful. Heading to Sydney on Friday evening and joining the

peak hour traffic along Pennant Hills Road was a reminder of why I enjoy living on

the Central Coast so much. I’m not the fittest bloke going around these days, but I

calculated that I could have jogged from the end of the freeway at Wahroonga to

the beginning of the M2 at Pennant Hills faster than I drove it that night. We

crawled along.

While in that situation I accepted there was nothing I could do but turn on the

radio, listen to some music, and relax. However, I observed a number of others

who didn’t seem to be so accepting of their situation and were determined to do

whatever it took to move through the gridlock a little faster. On a couple of

occasions this proved to be a real source of angst to other commuters. I didn’t

realise a horn could be held on for as long as I heard on that night. I am guessing

from my lip reading, that the driver blasting his horn was not wishing the car that

cut in front of him all the best for a lovely weekend.

Maybe I am just getting old, but when I drive these days it seems to me that more

and more people are angry and impatient. I encourage my children to try not to

respond to road incidents because you just can’t be too sure how the other driver

may respond these days.

What a contrast my time on the road over the weekend was to the well-known

verses I was reminded of on Monday as I read from Galatians 5. As Christians, we

often don’t need to say anything to be a powerful witness to others. Just living a

Spirit filled life that demonstrates traits such as kindness, patience and self-control

can be a huge contrast to the way we see many people act today.

Pray that as we engage with each other and the wider community that we might

live Spirit filled lives, and that others would be drawn to The One who strengthens

us to do so.

God bless,

Ian Liney

This week is another opportunity for students to experience the learning journey with dedicated teachers and supportive peers. We encourage students to enjoy the extracurricula opportunities that are presented in their different subject areas and press into God, not only when there is an invitation to do so, such as devotions and Chapel, but in all that they do throughout the day. The CMT students (Christian Ministry and Theology) are heading down to Sydney to participate in a retreat with students from other schools, embarking on the same course. It has been encouraging to see our students rally to fundraise through lunchtime barbeques. The funds raised are for students in distant parts of Queensland so that they can join the retreat. This service to others, speaks to the heart of what we value here in our community. UNIFORM The weather has officially changed and we are seeing more students trying to keep warm by wearing hoodies and long sleeve t-shirts under their school shirts. We would greatly appreciate parent support in ensuring that this doesn’t continue. The knitted school jumper is a warm option that can be worn under the zip jacket or school blazer. Stockings and trousers are encouraged as options to keep the legs warm. No beanies are permitted and scarves should be navy only. ASSESSMENT HANDBOOKS One of the most important documents that our students and families need to be familiar with is our Assessment Handbooks. They can be found in Canvas on the Secondary School Home Page. In these booklets you will find the dates that tasks are due, but also the assessment policies we need to have in place as we comply with NESA. On Wednesday 5th to Friday 7th June some keen writers from Secondary School attended the Maitland Christian School Writers’ Retreat. It was an excellent opportunity for students to develop their skills through workshops, mentoring from writers and teaching sessions, all in a supportive, Christian environment. Below is an excerpt from a short story composed by Zali H whilst on the retreat. A CRACK IN THE WALL The fire crackled on the star bitten night. This is it the last time Coco will see these strained faces’ bleak stares. The black widows are moving through tomorrow and some little boys are going to be taken. ‘Gone with the wind brother’, is what they used to say. As the frosty wind sticks to their eyes, another cold wind sells their souls to fate. The morning calls and black shadows of men trudge into the town square. The rich descend upon them like vultures that haven’t eaten in years. Their pure weight teeth don’t tell tales of men’s blood like they should. Once they finish with the men, they drag them into holes covered in chains. “Work!” they say. Coco is handed to a black-haired beauty of a brute and the journey of a broken heart continues. Coco has never been to the big city and will only be there for a short time. Small boxes and needles will be his fate. He doesn’t even have clothes on his back most days but will now have them in front of him ‘till he is passed his usefulness and is passed on. The walking continues. Coco doesn’t notice when they stop and more little boys join them. All he sees are more fragments of hopes and dreams fall to the floor, left under foot. They didn’t walk from this village, they were split and placed in a truck and cars. As the roads opened up other cars joined them, blank faces and unknowing stares looked ahead. They have come to the big city, the brief moment of awe soon fades and they drive down dim lanes. The car is stopped, and Coco is moved out. He is handed to another man and walked to a small box were needle and thread wait for him.

WORK EXPERIENCE – YEAR 10 Congratulations to all our Year 10 students who completed Work Experience last week. A big thank you to all the businesses that hosted them. We had students on the Central Coast, in Bathurst and Sydney experiencing careers in a wide variety of areas from Law and Animal Care to Speech Pathology and Farming. Students will get another opportunity for Work Experience at the end of the year (Monday 2nd to Friday 6th December) if they didn ’t get their first choice this time around. Here are two students’ accounts of their time completing Work Experience: During week six, I was fortunate enough to participate in the Work Experience program, in collaboration with Wyong Courthouse. Throughout this time, I was able to observe court proceedings, create and organise proper court documents, investigate the online media used within the court, and have thoughtful conversations with police prosecutors, private defense attorneys, and Legal Aid solicitors. I operated in a court officer role, which allowed me to assist the magistrate, assist the bar, and complete tasks relating to the proceedings that were being heard at the time. I also had the opportunity to work with the domestic violence unit and correctional facilities within the courthouse. I learnt legal terminology, the details within legal services, how to complete office tasks, client communication skills, and workplace etiquette. I enjoyed and appreciate the week I had during Work Experience, and look forward to the next Work Experience opportunity. -Lorena A I did my work experience with Sammo’s Plumbing. Throughout the week, I learnt what different pipe fittings do, what different diameter pipes are used for and much more. I really enjoyed being somewhere different each day, doing something different. It kept the job interesting and meant that I could experience a wider range of skills. I really enjoyed Work Experience and I would love to gain some more plumbing experience in the future. -Nicholas W

SECONDARY CROSS COUNTRY On Thursday 16th May, students arrived to school in great anticipation for our annual Cross Country Carnival! This year students once again had the choice to race as a competitor or as a fun-run participant. As the early morning fog lifted, so did the excitement of the students ready to run their races. It was great to see so many students enjoying themselves whilst participating in physical activities. We saw many creative finishes and it was great to see some students challenging themselves to do their best. Many personal bests were achieved on the day which is always pleasing to hear. This year the sports captains also ran a lolly store and sausage sizzle leading up to the event. Through their hard work and the generosity of our students, we were able to raise $383.80 for Rwanda Missions. It truly was a wonderful day! AGE CHAMPIONS

The Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award completed their test expedition on Monday 3rd to Tuesday 4th June. They walked the Bouddi Ridge and Coastal Walk, camping at Putty Beach. We had an awesome first day with the following highlights: a big hill from camp, an amazing lookout, multiple pack rearrangements, missing the track and walking along the road, lunch at Little Beach, some showers and yes some hail that we could watch as we crossed the beach. We had multiple opportunities to appreciate God’s creation, experiencing the views whilst walking the coast line. We made it to camp at 4pm, set up our tents, cooked a hot meal and had a fun night of spotlight and laughter. The rain and wind held off until the next morning, so we all had a warm night’s sleep. We returned early the next day, a bit cold and wet but greeted at school with hot raisin toast and hot chocolate. The rest of the day was spent completing our log reports and preparing for our next day hike adventure.

Thanks for the adventure Mrs Bianca Vieiro and Mr Alex Hellyer.
