Volume, Feature and Task Lighting

Lighting plays a critical role in creating a practical but atthe same time visually pleasing environment that respectthe architectural form.

Task lighting and Volume lighting should work togetherto achieve this.In the St Matthews Church Volume lighting should pic upon vertical surface and ceiling whilst task lighting shouldbe restricted to the task plane.

Feature lighting will be used to highlight the keyarchitectural or symbolic elements allowing them to drawones eye and become the feature of the space

Design Principles

The Vestibule is the main entrance to the church, enteringthrough the base of the tower which dates back to 1849.

The key feature within this space is the screen, regularlyused as a place of prayer by visitors.

Due to the large doors the vestibule receives gooddaylight into the space through large glazed doors. Thisintern means daylight and artificial light should be balancedto help minimise the contrast from moving from outsideto inside.

Design Principles

The Narthex is the linking space from the entrancevestibule to the main church areas, built in 1984 it has avery different interior aesthetic to other areas of thechurch.

The Narthex is a key congregation area for visitors andholds may of the stations of the cross and other significantsymbols. The key objective of this space it to provide baseilluminance for general congregation as well as to helpnavigate visitors through to the main church.

Design Principles

The main hall of St Matthews Church is a grand space withlarge stone arches and lavish with symbolic décor. The keyprinciple of this space is to not light everything, selectingkey architectural and symbolic aspects to focus on, allowthe interior to speak for itself.

The base principles as covered previously in thisdocument will be defined in the following pages to helpexpress each of the key lighting elements.

Spot Lighting

It is important to light soffit at the front of the church ,especially as this soffit has natural daylight contributionduring daylight hours.

This first option is to use track mounted spotlights toflood the ceiling with light creating a higher intensity andoverall coverage than the main space.

Spotlighting to Alter / Screen

The alter screen is the key feature element of the space. This will be lit using four spotlights of varying beam anglesto give an even spread of light to each panel.

Positioning and aiming of luminaires is critical to producethe optimum lit effect, through the use of track mountedspotlights this can will be tweaked in commissioning stagesof the design process.
