Chiaroscuro has been used here to connote a tense, negative and powerful atmosphere around the character standing in the image. It also creates depth in this particular scene. When looking at the light behind the character and how it makes his shadow look enormous, we as the audience denote that this character is dangerous.

In ‘Sin City’ low key lighting has been used to create dramatic effects and it is mostly associated with horror films or film noir. The use of it in ‘Sin city’ is that it creates suspense , eeriness and even seclusion at most part. The director chose not to use low-key lighting for everything e.g. blood, objects and symbols had their natural colour. This could have been done to add to the dramatic effect in a fight scene or to focus our attention to an object/subject.

Some movies use high key-lighting, this is used to make the scene appear very bright and soft. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (1939) used high key-lighting, this scene looks unrealistic as we don’t have light this bright in real life. This denotes that this movie is also unrealistic and so making us think that it can be a fantasy. Comparing this to low key-lighting it is the opposite and doesn’t add a dramatic effect.
