CAST Lighting manufacturespremium-quality landscapeand security lighting. Theiroutdoor incandescent andLED low-voltage luminairesare unique in the industry.Using the age-old method ofsand-casting (mostly solidbronze), CAST Lighting pro-duces luminaires in their ownSouth American foundry.CAST Lighting’s mission is to providerobust and flexible lighting tools (de-signed for the professional) that are en-ergy-efficient, reliable, simple toinstall and easy to service.

LED Perimeter Lighting SystemCAST Lighting’s most recent re-lease is the CAST LED Perime-ter Lighting System composedof compact and durable LED lu-minaires mounted on chain linkfence posts with a remote 24-volt power supply. This systemaddresses a need that others donot—an inexpensive, energy-ef-

ficient way to enhance visual security forextensive or remote property boundaries.

Solid Bronze Landscape Lighting Systems

CAST Lighting is best known for its ex-tremely durable, corrosion-resistant,landscape lighting luminaries.

Their most popular luminaire is theCAST Bullet (CBL1CB), a solid bronzedirectional light often used in extremelyaggressive Oceanside applications. Withno coatings to crack or peel, these lumi-naires age naturally to a blue-greenpatina and actually improve in appear-ance over time.

The LED version of this Bullet(CBLED141) utilizes an award-winningLED module. This module was recog-nized by the IESNA in 2011 as a signif-icant advancement in the lightingindustry. They stated, “This is the firstLED module designed to be used in anenclosed luminaire.”

Vu1 Corporation is setting a new globalstandard for safe, sustainable, energy-efficient lighting. Utilizing a tech-nology—Electron Stimulated Lumines-cence™ (ESL) that has its genesis in theTV-tube technology of past genera-tions—Vu1’s signature R30 bulb accom-plishes what lighting innovators havetried for centuries to do—generate alighting output that approaches the idealof lighting reflectivity defined by scien-tist Johann Lambert.

The Vu1 R30 succeeds by creatinga warm, pleasing light that has a fullspectrum of colors and reflects evenlyon the surface below. The R30 generatesa 65-watt equivalency and 500 lux withjust 19.5 watts, is fully dimmable, and

contains no mercury or other harmfulcomponents.

So, what is this ESL technologyand how does it work? Well, as men-tioned earlier, it functions similar toyour old tube televisions—it uses ac-celerated electrons to stimulate phos-phor to create light, making the surfaceof the bulb “glow”. This efficient tech-nology allows the ESL bulb to projectthe same light quality as an incandes-cent but is up to 70 percent more en-ergy efficient, lasting up to five timeslonger than incandescent and contribut-ing to the reduction of greenhouse gasemissions. Perhaps most importantly, there is no use of the neurotoxin Mer-cury (Hg) in the lighting process.

In 2004, a group ofengineers, scientists andexecutives sensed the be-ginning of a cataclysmicshift in the way consumersobtained lighting, and ex-plored various options ofhow to compete in thischanging lighting land-scape.

By combining tech-nologies that had neverbeen used before in light-ing, they created the Electron StimulatedLuminescence model—a highly energyefficient, near perfect light quality, mer-cury-free lighting technology.

After more than a half-decade oftesting and refining, the Vu1 R30 ESL re-ceived UL certification in October 2010.With this certification, Vu1 was able tobegin to put the pieces in place to movetoward full-scale production of the R30bulb—a process that will result in mass-distribution of the bulb in the U.S. during

Vu1 Introduces ‘Lighting Without Compromise’ To Eager Lighting Consumers

the summer of 2012.The R30 is just the first

in a variety of bulbs thatVu1 will be able to producewith its ESL technology.Plans are in place to intro-duce the classic A-typelamp for U.S. and Europeanconsumers, the R40 for theU.S. commercial marketand the R25 in Europe.

Vu1’s mission is tohelp consumers and busi-

nesses meet their demands for more envi-ronmentally-friendly lighting choices thatmeet standards now being set through theban of incandescent light bulbs. By intro-ducing the only bulb that can deliver af-fordability, energy-efficiency anddimmability in a non-toxic package, Vu1is the only choice is truly a “light withoutcompromiseTM”.

LED Research and DevelopmentWhen bright-light LED’s first entered themarket (about 4 years ago), product de-velopers at CAST Lighting started inves-tigating the potential for LED’s in theoutdoor environment. It became obviousthat LED retrofit lamps were a poor so-lution, mainly because they could not suf-ficiently dissipate heat in typicalplug-in-socket configurations. Even withadvances in LED technology, the heatissue could not be overcome.

Instead, CAST Lighting began aprocess of re-designing their luminariesand developing LED modules (with ade-quate thermal pathways). After 3 years ofintensive R & D, CAST Lighting re-leased its unique line of LED landscapelights. Their criteria for performancewent far beyond heat management, andincluded solutions for a host of LED per-formance issues. These include:•Switchable Brightness. The CAST LED

Bullet (CBLED141) and Tree Light(CTLED141) have a high/low brightnessswitch.•Changeable optics. These same two lu-minaires have optics that can be removedand changed by the installer. •Extended Voltage Range. All CAST LED’shave the widest input voltage range in theindustry. 9.6 to 28.8 volts for the LED Bullet(CBLED141) Tree Light (CTLED141); and8 to 18 volts for all other LED luminaires. •Spike and Surge Protection. CASTLighting LED drivers have componentsthat protect against prolonged surges andoccasional spikes.•EMI Filtering. All LED drivers generateEMI; occasions of interference withhousehold control devices are common.CAST Lighting drivers have EMI filtersfor conformance with FCC standards.•Replaceable Modules and Boards. AllCAST Lighting LED modules and boardscan be field-replaced.

The race to find clean, renewable andsustainable energy is at a fever pitch.Billions of dollars are spent on advanc-ing wind, water, solar, fossil, coal, nu-clear energy sources—you name it, andthere is an online chatter defending oropposing it. In and of itself, the courseof arguments between passionate de-fenders is commendable: we are makingprogress on many fronts towards a betterfuture.

Those of us in the lighting industry,in turn, immerse ourselves in researchand developing products to use less en-ergy; and escalate our own argumentsabout which technology; SSL, induc-tance, fluorescent, etc., will outlast allothers. No doubt, lighting technology isadvancing at an ever-increasing pace, due, in no small measure, to the compet-itive nature of this business. Is there aclear winner in this race?

In our view, no matter the source ofenergy, or the lighting technology, theconsumer is primarily interested in sav-ing as much energy, and therefore cost,as possible. After all, a watt is a watt, andutility companies charge by the watt. Ohand by the way, the consumer also wants

the product to look good. In a nutshell, the consumer wants options.

At KOJIN, we are committed to thefundamental principle of “keeping itsimple”. In early 2005, we looked at thesimple fluorescent tube—the mostwidely used lighting technology outsideof residential applications. The tube ra-diates light 360° around the tube. Theobvious first response was a mostly non-technical one— apply a reflector aroundthe tube to re-direct the “wasted” lightdown to the task level. Using Nano tech-nology, we manufactured tube reflectors, with curvatures engineered to maximizelight reflection for each fluorescent lampsize. The patented Nano reflector in-creases the footcandle by 65 percent! Ifyou are mathematically inclined, you’dfigure out that you can de-lamp one outof every two T8 lamps, and get the sameor better lighting. That is 50 percent en-ergy savings.

Jim Hardaway was appointed the VicePresident of Viribright Lighting Inc in2011. Previously, he held the position ofCEO of Energy Efficient Enterprises ofChino, CA and CEO of a Division of Neo-Neon LED Lighting International, who hejoined in 2004. Hardaway has been deeplyinvolved in the lighting industry since theearly 1990’s, and has held industry posi-tions such as President and Board Mem-ber of the International Laser DisplayAssociation (ILDA). Over the past sevenyears, Hardaway has lived and worked inChina, managing large-scale productionand development of LED Lighting prod-ucts, which have been applied in commer-cial, entertainment, architectural anddecorative lighting markets globally.

Q: Please start by telling us a bit aboutthe company and your products.

A: Viribright is a brand of, and in the U.S. asubsidiary of Matrix Lighting Ltd., a MatrixHoldings Ltd. Company. Matrix HoldingLtd. is a public company listed on the HongKong Stock Exchange HKEX 1005. Overthe years, Matrix has been involved in anumber of different types of business, but

for practical purposes over the last coupledecades, has been a leading toy manufac-turer. Five years ago, Matrix Holdingsmade the decision to establish MatrixLighting Ltd., as many other companies in-terested in finding new growth segmentsbegan entering the LED developmentarena. Matrix Lighting’s focus was then, and is now, on the development, innovationand production of LED Lamp technologies. With early successes in Europe, LatinAmerica and Asia, Matrix Lighting Ltd. es-tablished a new company and appointed meto lead the company into a successful posi-tion in the North American market.

Our LED Lamps are designed for generalillumination which is a niche that has untilnow been addressed only in a limited fash-ion. Viribright LED Lamps incorporateIPT™ (Isolated Phosphor Technology)which is patent pending. Viribright LEDLamps incorporate multichip chip on board(MC COB) LED Modules which incorpo-rate Epistar and Chimei LED Chips. Matrixdeveloped three primary MC COB LEDModules for its new line of low cost, highlumen output LED Lamps. Matrix manu-factures the LED packages down to the

copper lead frame and bins tightly to con-trol the consistency of color temperaturebetween production runs. Matrix LEDmodules are also Red enhanced whichyields strong results on the R9 value of theR14 CRI (color rendering index) scale.IPT™ technology separates the organicphosphors from the TJ of the LED chip, which yields greater color stability. Re-cently, Viribright has achieved LightingFacts approvals for many of its products aswell as placement on interim rebate lists.Current testing for LM80-08 is underway, with the ultimate goal of becoming EnergyStar qualified on our range of LED Lampsfor broader rebate qualification.

Q: Who are your typical customers forthis?

A: We are currently approaching both theED (Electrical Distribution) channels aswell as Consumer Retailers simultane-ously. Our mission is to bring our partnershigh value through lower costs, quality ofproduct and service to the various levels ofdistribution through competitive and con-trolled price policy. The goal is to displacefluorescent and incandescent light sourcesand we believe that maintaining high pricesfor short term gains defeats that purposeand slows the consumer acceptance of the

Making LED Lamps Affordable technology. I can assure you our customersappreciate that approach.

Q: Do you see any demand trends fromyour customer base?

A:Certainly. I think the biggest trend affect-ing our business has been our success withdeveloping new products, LED Moduleswith IPT™, our color temperatures and con-sistency, as well as our high power factorsin our self-developed and produced drivertechnologies. The fact that our LED Lampsare cULus Listed is also very attractive toour customers. Recently, as we have beenintroducing our 60W direct replacementA19 medium screw base lamp, amidst themedia hype of the L-Prize winning lamp, customers are finding that Viribright costper lumen is much more attractive. We arequite optimistic that our Benchmark Series10W dimmable and omnidirectional A19with 900 lumens at MSRP of $39.95, willsurely gain consumer confidence. Throughour cost leadership, we intend to keep ourprices low to accelerate the displacement ofpoisonous mercury laden CFL lamps in thedays, months and years to come.

audience—even global governments andindustry leaders. In the last decade theLED chip has quickly transformed thelight bulb as we know it today to a phe-nomenon quickly leading to a vast para-digm shift away from traditional lightsources.

When such technology is unveiled itis often met with skepticism, early offer-ings are of poor quality, little to no regu-lations exist and we view the landscapeas somewhat of a Wild, Wild, West cadreof companies and individuals trying toget in on the action. While the technologyitself dates back to 1907 (Henry JosephRound), only in recent years has the tech-nology, cost and acceptance finallyreached the tipping point. Early in 2011,

Cree, Inc. introduced a 10w, 1,000 lumenLED chip that is quickly trans-forming the outdoor commer-cial, industrial, warehouse andmunicipal lighting sectoraway from traditional HIDlight fixtures to those drivenby low-wattage LED lamps.

Leader InternationalCorporation, a 31-year venera-ble manufacturer of outdoor siteand street furniture and LED accentlights, collaborated with its affiliate Dif-ferential Energy Global Ltd. (DEG) tobring several transformational innova-tions in LED lighting through the cre-ative, design, prototype and testingphases. Releasing at LIGHTFAIR® andthroughout 2012, DEG will offer an arrayof LED lamps with equivalent lumen out-put (displayed in lux or footcandles)

ready to replace all levels of HID bulbsranging from 70w to 400w ini-

tially and followed by outputsfor hi-bay fixtures up to a700w equivalent.

The LED HI-Lampproduct is a game-changer—from its simpledesign and high-tech ther-

mal management system toits unique proprietary low-

voltage power system—thispatented LED replacement lamp simplyscrews into the same medium or mogulbase socket as the current HID bulb restsin. With a screw-driver and less thanfive minutes of labor, the installer re-moves the existing energy-wasting HIDballast, ignitor and capacitor—recyclesthese metal and copper items and theextra copper wiring—re-installs the ex-

isting two wire nuts directly from the in-coming power supply (90-305VAC) tothe base socket and installs the new LEDHI-Lamp.

This is NOT a high-cost retro-fit but alow-cost replacement lamp (or bulb) witha ROI range of 1-2 years, system watt re-ductions of 50-75 percent, an innovativespring-loaded tip allowing for 360°+ LEDlight rotation (a feature that addresses most“cut-off” requirements) and 0-10 VDC andtriac dimmable features. At approximateoperating savings ranging from 45-70 per-cent of traditional HID and a 10 year pro-rated warranty; this LED replacement lampis a superior solution to that of typical HIDto LED replacement retrofit concepts.

Why the coolest? Because LuxEvo LEDsare cooled by our patentedHeat SpreaderTM—a heatdissipation system ourcompetition can’t match. And in LEDs, cooler isbetter. Some of our com-petition uses wattage re-duction and reduction inlight output to address their failures tocontrol heat. Some of our competitionwon’t publish their junction tempera-tures. Are they hiding something?

LuxEvo provides ex-traordinary value with a fullproduct line of interior andexterior LED fixtures. In ad-dition to fixtures, LuxEvo

specializes in providing engineered solu-tions, turn-key service, and a nationalroll-out capability.

Offering the best heat dissipationtechnology is only part of the story. Whatis the value of a 100,000 rated fixture ifthe LED modules could be obsolete in

five years? LuxEvo fixtures have up-gradeable circuit boards that will allowfor future upgrades while preserving thefixture housing and the cooling capabilityof the Heat Spreader. We provide a long-term economic lighting solution thatkeeps pace with technology advance-ments. So with LuxEvo there is no needto wait on LED.

The claim has been made that LED’sare directional, overly-focused, and cre-ate hotspots. LuxEvo addresses the issuewith optics and adjustability. Many of themodules in our Lights rotate from 5˚ to45˚ within the fixture. We can fine-tuneour fixtures for even light spread overlap-ping or tapering beam angles as neces-sary. We can also provide cut-off atproperty lines preventing light trespassand reducing off-site glare.

LuxEvo—The Coolest Technology At LIGHTFAIR®

LuxEvo has also planned for the futureincluding the capability for off-peak andoff-the-grid lighting solutions. Our lightshave dedicated space in their driver com-partments for future battery and control up-grades to allow ultimate flexibility forupgrading to an integrated solar solution.

And that is just the beginning. Hereis what is coming…• LED Tubes with a 210˚ Beam Angle: Fi-nally an LED Tube that will perform likea fluorescent!• Liquid Lenses: Increase light output bymore than 15 percent over conventionallenses while reducing glare• 300-600 Watt Fixtures: The answer forhigh mast and high illumination arealighting.• 90+ CRI: Color rendering close to day-light for a wide range of LED fixtures.

Get Plugged In with Acrich2—AC-Driven: Protect the Environment, ReduceHeat Sink, and Obtain Greater DesignFreedom

Global LED powerhouse, Seoul Semi-conductor, leaves the LED “junk” be-hind with its new Acrich2 modules. Ata recent demonstration at the Strategiesin Light conference in Santa Clara, Cal-ifornia, Chung Hoon Lee, CEO andfounder of Seoul Semiconductor, demonstrated the complexity of LEDdesigns by comparing Acrich2 LEDs toDC LED lamps manufactured by fiveother companies. During a visualdemonstration, CEO Lee held up thecomponents of the LED lamps and re-ferred to the parts as “junk.” NorthAmerican Vice-President, Brian Wilcox(formerly with Philips Lumileds), refers

to the AC-LED technology as “LED-Light.” “It’s unbelievable technology—where else can you find a product thatprotects the environment, provides re-markable design freedom, and mini-mizes the number of parts allowing fora sleeker, slimmer design. It should becalled ‘LED-Light’—because it has all

of the benefits of an incredible LEDwithout any side effects,” Wilcox said.

Seoul Semiconductor commercial-ized the first ever “AC-LED” in theworld back in 2005. Shortly thereafter,a new product line branded ‘Acriche’was launched for the general lightingmarket. The company has continued toinvest heavily in AC-driven LED tech-nology and is now focused on theAcrich2 family of modules that arehelping lighting companies eliminatethe AC/DC drivers and reduce spacesignificantly in bulb and fixture de-signs. A large variety of voltage andpower ranges are available to meet awide variety of needs.

Three years ago, Seoul Semicon-ductor was unheard of in North Amer-ica. Now, under Wilcox’s leadership, there is a distinct buzz around SeoulN.A. In just a few years, Wilcox re-structured and reorganized the salesteam, which has since doubled in size.He has also added marketing, distribu-tion, and technical support divisions,as well as two North American labswhere Seoul N.A. can perform its own

Hubbell Building Automa-tion’s wiHUBB® Wireless DistributedLighting Control System is a securepeer-to-peer, self organizing and selfhealing mesh network of smart packs, occupancy sensors, daylight harvestingsensors, switch stations and fixturemodules designed specifically for indoor and outdoor lighting applications”.

The wiHUBB system utilizesSNAP (Synapse Network ApplianceProtocol) to create the peer-to-peer,self-organizing and self-healing meshnetwork. These features provide for avirtually unlimited network size, reli-

able message delivery and do not re-quire a network coordinator, which canbe a single point of failure. All wirelessdevices communicate on the robust andreliable 900MHz ISM band. In com-parison to wireless networks that use2.4GHz devices, 900MHz deviceshave a longer signal range and are leastaffected by propagation losses andphysical obstructions.

All messages within the wiHUBBnetwork are secure. When transmittingover the air, the system uses 128-bitAdvanced Encryption Standard (AES-128) security—the same encryptiontechnology utilized by the US govern-ment to secure data transmissions. ThewiHUBB system also uses the secureHTTPS/SSL protocol when users ac-cess the wiHUBB network using theirInternet browser.

for the commercial indoor market. Wehave initially focused on the linear re-placement lamp market, which many viewas the “holy grail” of LED lighting. Withthe U.S. ban of the T-12 fluorescent lamphappening on July 14 of this year, we seea tremendous near-term opportunity forLED technology to establish a foothold inthis very large market. There are over 500million T-12s still in the U.S. We want tobe a big part of that conversion story.

Q: How did you get started?

A: NEXT Lighting’s co-founder ZachBerkowitz, who comes from the com-mercial real estate world and has beena friend since college, came to mewith a problem. He had been experi-menting with some of the “me-too” re-placement lamps and found themtechnically deficient. Many of themwere failing after just a few months, and some of them were getting so hotthat solder was actually melting. Sowe began to investigate if we couldcome up with a better design thanwhat everyone else was doing. Weteamed up with some very smart engi-neers, and we’ve been refining our de-

sign for almost 3 years now. I mustadmit that when we started, we werevery naïve on just how hard a problemthis was to solve. The fluorescent tubeis very efficient, and after 80 years ofcost-reduction, very inexpensive. Onthe other hand, nobody ever said, “Ilove how pale you look under this flu-orescent light. And can you give mesome more of that flicker?” And thenthere’s the mercury issue.

Q: What is your technical break-through?

A: Our products are very different fromthe other linear lamp solutions out there. We have developed a thermal chimneydesign that keeps the LEDs very cool, in-creasing performance and longevity. Ourdesign also uniquely enables us to shapethe light distribution to suit the specificapplication. When people see our prod-uct, it is clear to them that we’ve been“thinking outside the tube.”

Q: What are your company’s greatestchallenges?

A: Where do I start? (Laughs.) First, ourmarket has been tainted by a lot of poorquality products that have been sold withfalse claims. So the consumer has been

rightly trained to be very skeptical. Fortu-nately, with the right independent testingreports, this problem can be overcome, butit will take some time and effort. Second,as with most LED product categories, lin-ear replacement lamp sales are dependentupon being able to demonstrate to the cus-tomer an attractive return on their invest-ment. While dropping quickly in price,LEDs are still relatively expensive, so pro-ducing a product that performs well at anaffordable price point is an ongoing chal-lenge for all of us in this industry. And fi-nally, as a start-up in a world of industrygiants, finding a successful go-to-marketstrategy is a tremendous challenge.

Q: How do you plan to address this distribution challenge?

A: We feel very fortunate to have beenapproached by several industry leadersand are considering our options. If we dopartner with someone, we want to makesure it is an arrangement that takes fulladvantage of this global opportunity.

Q: Does that mean you will sell yourproducts under another company’sbrand?

A: That is an option, but we don’t haveanything to announce yet.

NEXT LIGHTING(continued from page 1)

Q: Have you begun product shipments, and how much do your lamps cost?

A: We have installed our products in cus-tomer sites under our PilotLight field as-sessment program. We are gatheringimportant feedback, which has been uni-versally positive. As far as cost goes, wehave not yet announced final pricing, butour sales folks would be pleased to dis-cuss specific opportunities.

Q: We have to ask, what’s next forNEXT?

A: Beyond the linear replacement lampmarket, we are currently working on apendant lamp series that will provideexcellent light distribution without theneed for a fixture in the ceiling. Wealso have other linear formats as wellas task lighting on our productroadmap.

Next we set course on convertingthe less efficient T12 and T8 lights to themore efficient T5 lamps. To address theconcern that the sheer slimness of the T5lamp renders it incompatible with theT12/T8 tombstones, we commissioned

G13 adaptors to fit over the smaller G5socket on T5 tubes. The bigger obstaclewas resolving the retrofit process withoutadding significant labor. The solution wasto manufacture a T5 self-ballasted kit;consisting of a lamp holder, which alsoacts to contain the T5 ballast, the G13adaptors and the T5 lamp. The result isan average of 30 percent energy savings.

Thereafter, our development openedup a wide spectrum of product offerings, centering around the T5 technology;such as troffers, shop lights, strip lights, etc. Not discounting the LED advances,we now also have a division focused onbringing the same cost-effective produc-tion to LED products—recognizing thateach product class has pros and cons.
