Depending on configuration, over 300 components may make up a set of beacons for securing drop zones, landing zones or airfield strips. The following may be considered main components of a set:

1. Light components1.1 Flare / E-Flare beacons;1.2 Mobile, battery-powered light systems - floodlights;

2. Control elements for a group of beacons or the whole set of beacons (all groups);2.1 Wired control base unit;2.2 Radio control base unit;

3. Power supply components:3.1 Individual battery packs;3.2 AC power supply units for battery packs;3.3 Remote control;

4. Installation elements for beacons:4.1 Aviation base mounts for placing beacons in any position;4.2 Aviation base mounts with ballast;4.3 Steel aviation base mounts with adjustable height;4.4 Modular poles with adjustable height;4.5 Ground anchors for base mounts;

5. Elements for transportation of sets of beacons:5.1 Landing hard carry bags for individual components of the set:5.2 Transport cases;

The entire set, including beacons and control base unit, are powered by commonly available R20 rechargeable batteries.Depending on the variant, these may be ordinary rechargeable batte-ries that require to be recharged at least once in 3months (to keep them fully operational) or long-term storage batte-ries, for which manufacturers guarantee at least 75%charge level after 1 year of storage. Still, such batteries need to be recharged at least once in 6 months to ensure thebeacon’s operating time in extreme temperature conditions is kept at proper level.

It is also important to remember to observe proper polarity when in-stalling such rechargeable batteries. For beacons, thepositive (+) pole is inside and in control base units the negative (-) pole is inside (this is due to the design of power supplypacks in control base units).

The entire set may be controlled in three ways:

1. Manual mode, where each beacon is switched on/off individually;

2. Combined mode, where individual beacons or groups of beacons may be controlled synchronously with a wired or radioremote control;

3. Remote control mode, where each beacon or group of beacons is switched on/off with its own control base unit, which is,in turn, controlled with the central control panel / remote control of the entire group.

FLARE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

BEACONS

Page 7: Lighting set

[7]

There are two different kinds of Flares. They are easily distinguished with external housing and its colour. Anothercharacteristic feature is the method of switching the beacon on and its operation mode.

Switching the power on:- EF/HZ (E-Flare)Turn the beacon’s head until perceptible resistance is felt to switch the beacon on. The turn distance is regulated withguiding channels where pins that determine the beacon’s colour are located. The beacon is immediately switched on. IRversions emit 3 short beeps to signal the start of operation.

- F12Press the button in the housing once to switch it on in first operation mode.

3F-FLARE is a signaling and emergency beacon. It may be used for warning and designating hazardous areas (emergency forces, uni-form services, drivers, etc.). It may also be successfully applied to designate helicopter landing sites or signaling vehicle breakdowns.

Depending on the operation mode, beacons can be divided into two types:

- INDIVIDUAL MODE beacons (IM). The LED module allows three illumination modes. The beacon is controlled with abut-ton placed on the housing’s side. The user may choose from three modes: quick flash, standard flash and steady light.

- GROUP MODE beacons (GM). An extended IM beacon. The beacon may operate independently or in a group of beacons, synchronized with signal transmitted by wire (KUS) or by radio (RUS). Depending on the used light module, the beacon operates in only one colour, or in ex-tended mode, where one of several colours and light types can be used:1. IR invisible light;2. RGB;3. Amber;4. White;

GROUP CONTROLThanks to group control, the user can synchronously switch on / off all beacons within a specific group. Depending on the type of beacons it is also possible to select the operating mode (steady / flashing) and light colour (RBG + WHITE + AMBER + IR). Manual or remote control is

possible at every level. Consequently, situations like damage, loss or discharge of the remote control - which makes it impossible to switch on a group of beacons - can be avoided. See the diagram below for better understanding of the control structure.

The user may switch on individual groups of beacons or the entire set. Before starting operation, mode of operation and light colour (if the beacons have such functions) can be selected for each group of beacons.

The number of Flare beacons is unlimited for any group, and a group can be composed of just 1 beacon, too. This only depends on the ran-ge of operation of a given control base unit and the layout of beacons assigned to such a control base unit. Beacons can be freely moved be-

tween groups (a beacon must be then logged in the new control base unit). Control base unit operates on various frequency bands, which means beacons can be placed close to each other or even mixed.A beacon assigned to a given control base unit will only react to si-gnal from this particular control base unit. A control base unit rece-ives commands from the user, via a remote control or a control panel on the control base unit housing. Such control protocol translates into versatility of a set of beacons in their use for military, emergency or other purposes. See a modified Drop Zone diagram below.

Flare beacon, RUS

3F-FLARE RUS Flare beacon is adapted for operation in a group of beacons. It features a specially adapted electronic circuit with a module for receiving radio signal from the control base unit. The beacon can operate independently (IM) and in group mode (GM).

Control base unit, RUSThe RUS control base unit synchronizes the operation of all beacons in a group, assigned to a particular control base unit. The control base unit can be controlled manually, via a special control panel, or with a radio remote control.

Ex ATEX eFlare beacon

A version of eFlare beacon designed for operation in explosion hazard areas. This is of crucial importance when securing an area, conducting typical engineering activi-ties or when specialized fire & emergency services are at work. Red beacons placed at the edges of a zone determine its range. The exit from a hazard zone may be mar-ked with a line of beacons placed on rubber base mounts, where the middle part of the line comprises beacons with steady amber light, the starting point in the zone is designated with red flashing light and the end point, the so-called Safety Zone, is made with flashing green light.

Steel aviation base mount- adjustable height

For securing landing zones for combat helicopters or Air Ambulance medicopters, landing strips for large cargo planes or light civilian aircraft. The adjustable height beacons may be used in various terrain types, such as snow, tall grass or uneven land. The low center of gravity and rod supports make it impervious to gusts of wind. This is especially important in terms of safety, e.g. when securing landing zo-nes for large helicopters. The standard version of base mounts is anodized in black. Any color may be applied to the base mount, or it can be coated with special reflec-tive tape for better visibility for field personnel (optionally). A matter of key impor-tance when securing a landing zone during exercises or when aircraft crew with night goggles approach the airstrip. The base mount is of simple design and boasts excellent resistance to elements. One beacon can be installed normally, or two, with an adapter. The base mount can also be anchored to the ground with pins.

Rubber aviation base mount

The most popular choice for securing airstrips or drop zones. The base mount can be secured in any position thanks to the beacon’s catches. The lightweight device is portable. This is especially appreciated by user who carries around a lot of personal equipment (servicemen, soldiers).

Hard case for 10 beacons+ base mounts

A hard case for 10 Flare beacons and 10 rubber aviation base mounts. The hard case can be used for parachuting. The beacons are placed in the hard case so that they are additionally protected from the top and bottom by the rubber base mounts. Customers may also request other models of hard cases, for more beacons and ones that can be transported on back. The hard case is made of green Cordura that does not react to IR, and the top cover is closed with a hefty YKK zip (other camo patterns are also available).

E-FLARE ATEX

Explanation of symbols:

II 3 G Coding pursuant to ATEX Directive no. 94/9/EC

The special Ex symbol designates protection in „Explosive Atmosphere” or „Explosion Hazard Zones”.

„3” Means category 3 equipment for use in zone 2. The equip-ment, given its operating parameters specified by the manufactu-rer, is designed for operation in areas where explosion risk occurs due to presence of mixture of air and gases, vapors, mists or gas and dust mixtures. The explosion risk is improbable, but if it takes place, this happens infrequently and for a short period of time. A good example are areas where vehicles are refueled.

„G” means gas (namely, a mixture of air with gases, vapors or mi-sts). If used, „D” means dust (namely, gas and dust mixtures).

„Ex ic IIC T4 Gc” is the coding method used after the Directive 94/9/WE came into life. Before, ATEX coding would not provide complete information about certifications. This marking is used additionally and ensures better understanding of the device’s pa-rameters and consequently helps avoid misunderstandings.

„Ex” stands for approval for use pursuant to „explosion proof pro-tection” standards.

„ic” is very close in its meaning to the previously explained sym-bol „3”. Equipment also for use in areas where explosion riskis not present.

„IIC” designates equipment for use in places other than mines, i.e. in industrial facilities placed overground (with explosivegas atmosphere). The gas may be a mixture of nitrogen and air; this category is marked „C”.

„T4” means that the maximal temperature of the surface of the part of or the entire device does not exceed 135°C when theambient temperature is 40°C.

„Gc” means operation protection in gas atmosphere and level of protection of the device itself, when it operates normallywithout any defects.

The approval for operation in explosion hazard zones is only valid if beacons are powered with the following kinds ofbatteries:

Energizer Industrial E91 (AA Cell) Energizer Industrial MN1300 (D Cell) Duracell Procell PC1500 (AA Cell) Duracell Procell PC1300 (D Cell) Varta MN1500 (AA Cell) Varta MN1300 (D Cell)

E-Flare beacons are certified for use in explosion hazard zones. The certification applies to all E-Flare 500 and E-Flare 350Red and Amber beacons (series 300 is obsolete).
