slide explain the lighting technique

How many lights?

We only had one light to use for the workshop

Draw in the box where you would position your lights to create the effect

Where are they positioned?

Behind the actor and the actor is positioned right in front of the actor. Sometimes for the best effect the camera should be positioned close to the actor so no light escapes the silhouette of the actor

This lighting affects the atmosphere by making the figure seem slightly ominous and it makes them look more dramatic.

You’d be most likely to see this technique in the ending scene of movies to give a more dramatic impression

Backlighting

What health and safety points did you need to remember when arranging this lighting set up?

The camera man is to be careful not to look at the light since it’s pointed right at the camera, also the actor may be standing near the light too long and it could heat up whatever they’re wearing

Draw in the box where you would position your lights to create the effect

Low Key

They’re mainly positioned to the right of the actor, so there’s only light on one side of the actor

This creates atmosphere by making the character look quite serious and dark.

This lighting affect is often used on the front covers of DVDs and posters

There is a lot of light on one side of the person’s face so you can’t leave the light on for too long or it could damage the light slightly.

To create this effect you’d only need one light

Draw in the box where you would position your lights to create the effect

Under lighting

Under lighting only needs one light

The lights are often positioned right underneath the actor.

This lighting creates atmosphere by bringing out any horror features on a monster.

You’d be most like to see this technique in thriller and horror movies, or a movie that’s trying to make an adaptation of those type of movies

When arranging this set up, the actor needs to be careful not to trouble the light when getting ready or during the shot in case the source falls over.

Draw in the box where you would position your lights to create the effect

Top lighting

You only need one light

Right at the top of the actor

It creates atmosphere because in most cases the person is looking up so it makes the audience feel a bit numinous.

This technique is mainly used by women in movies as it highlights their cheekbones

The actor ha to be careful not to look up and the light has to be secure above the person.

Draw in the box where you would position your lights to create the effect

High Key Lighting

Four lights are needed for this type of lighting

They are positioned all around the set so darkness and shadows are minimised

This lighting creates a calm atmosphere as there are so much lights it gives the sense as if there is nothing to hide.

You would see this affect being used in sitcoms or rom-com movies

Make sure all lights are secure and be careful not to look at any of the lights that are on the set since they’d be very bright and easier to look at since there are so much of them
