From THE SUPER’S DESK…. From THE SUPER’S DESK….

Hello to all Turkey Creek Division members… The April 25 meeting featured our new addition to Division membership from Australia, Kelly Loyd MMR. Kelly presented a clinic on “Plastic Modeling”. It was very interesting and informative...Kelly is a great modeler. Thanks, Kelly.

This month, we have two clinics. In the first, three of our TC members will present a clinic on the NMRA’s Achievement Program. Paul Richardson MMR (NMRA AP General Manager), Brad Morneau MMR (MCoR AP Chair), and Joe Robertson MMR (TC Division AP Chair) will explain how to negotiate this program with a minimum of frustration. This is obviously the only instance of a Division that touts all three of these positions. We are very lucky to have these guys available to us.

For the second clinic, Larry Diehl will present information on the North Missouri Railroad. Larry’s research on many of the early regional railroads is always interesting. I believe that the NMRR eventually became part of the Wabash.

As a look, ahead to the June meeting, we have the annual TC Modeling Challenge coming up. There is still time to put together an entry so that you can participate in the challenge. The Challenge theme this year continues to be “No Limitation”. So, you can bring and display anything, so long as it will fit through the door. Your entry does not even have to be finished…bring it anyway and explain to the group what you are doing and how you are doing it. The inclusion of a Make-and-Take model in some way with your entry makes the entry eligible for an additional special award. With the summer months approaching, there will be numerous distractions to most of our model railroading activities. I try hard to keep active with projects by spending a little time on them every day. This does result in steady progress. So, just try to keep after it. I loved to see Modeling Challenge entries, Turkey Creek Meet contest entries, and more layouts on the layout tours. I hope you all will continue to try to attend the monthly Turkey Creek Division meetings (4th Tuesday of each month. These are great opportunities to meet and interact with other local modelers. It’s a chance for all of us to learn new things and to pass on to others some of our new or different ideas and techniques. I know all will benefit. Best to all… Larry

4/25/17 April Clerk Report We had about 26 members at our meeting this month. Larry Diehl is looking for volunteers to help out at the July 29 Turkey Creek show. So, if you have not volunteered please do. The more people that can help the less everybody has to do and the work is spread out among a lot people so everybody is only helping out for an about an hour. So far, we have about 29 tables sold and 14 people registered so get your registrations in. That will make it easier on our volunteers if you do it early rather than at the show. Don’t forget about the Ames show coming up. Larry Alfred MMR says since this is a combined show it should be a good one with plenty to do. Check their web page for details. Kelly Loyd put on a great clinic on Plastic modeling. After the clinic was over Larry Alfred passed out door prizes that Louis was kind enough to pick up for us. Steve Priest is looking for volunteers and layouts for the 2018 NMRA convention. If you can help with ei-ther contact Steve. A few said the web site was not working and couldn’t contact them. You can contact Steve at 816-746-6733 in case the web site is still not working. The meeting was over just about at 8:10 pm.

Kelly Loyd was asking about replacement paints for Floquil. You might take a look at this Floquil cross ref chart I found at http://www.microscale.com/Floquil%20Color%20Chart.pdf. Here’s a place you can find more at https://

www.modelersdp.com/collections/airbrush-paint you can also look at this site http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/en_US/model-air/family/17 if you’re interested in Military colors that also work for our hobby. There is also a guy on this site that has a way to restore you Polly scale paint at http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/207600.aspx Scalecoat paints has a new owner now and is marketed under Minuteman Models at http://www.minutemanscalemodels.com/Default.asp and you can find more Vallejo colors at http://www.thewarstore.com/vallejomodelcolors.html . I hope this helps Kelly find the colors he is looking for and some of you also.

That’s all for now, Steve McKee, Clerk

Express, Mail & Merchandise Service by Jeff Wilson. 2016, Kalmbach Books. Soft cover, 95 pp. In these days of the ubiquitous FedEx and UPS delivery trucks chasing each other up and down our streets, it's easy to forget the role that railroads played in the delivery of mail and packages in the United States. With the expansion of rail ser-vice throughout the country, it soon became apparent that it was faster and more economical to transport mail by rail. The first Railway Post Office (RPO), with clerks handling and sorting mail en route, was introduced in 1862 on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. Package delivery necessitated the formation of express com-panies, the first of which, the First Express Co., started in 1839. William Hernden's one-man carpetbag operation quickly ex-panded to carrying express packages on railroad cars from New York to Boston. As the railroads expanded and merged, so did the express companies. By 1890 there were over 30 express companies in the US, but 93% of the total mileage covered was by only 6 of them, including Wells Fargo and American Ex-press. The express business became very competitive between companies, fixing rates and providing "exclusive" services with railroads and towns. Parcel Post, as offered by the U.S. Post Office in 1913, cut heavily into the express business by offering delivery of smaller packages at a cheaper, albeit slower, rate. As part of the federal government's efforts to standardize and regulate the railroads with the formation of the United States Railway Administration (USRA), the Railway Express Agency was organized in 1929 to consolidate all express and package deliveries under one monopoly, with tight Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) regulations. A side-business of railroads emerged early as less-than-carload (LCL) parcel deliveries from station-to-station or be-tween on-line freight houses. This necessitated the use of trucks for the first and last legs of the delivery. However, LCL was expensive for the railroads because of multiple handlings of merchandise by many employees at many facilities. Also, trucks proved to be cheaper and more flexible, especially for deliveries under 100 miles. The New York Central experiment-ed with shipping containers for LCL in 1921, carried by gondo-las, and off-loaded to trucks for delivery to the final destination, the first intermodal operation. Some roads carried it one step further with the Trailer-On-Flat-Car (TOFC) service. The ulti-mate effort to become more efficient and cost-effective was the formation of dedicated trains such as the Cotton Belt's "Blue Streak", New York Central's "Pacemaker", Pennsylvania's "Keystone" and Southern Pacific's "Overnight" trains. By 1970, LCL shipments virtually ceased and the last RPO rode on an Amtrak train from New York to Washington, D.C. in 1977. The author nicely details the history of mail and package delivery in the US. Railroads, trucks and airplanes were in-volved and often had intertwined roles. Although the volume of business was great, it was a constant struggle for the railroads and express companies to remain profitable. Cross-country deliveries were handled on freight and passenger trains, depend-ing on the speed required. Live animals and perishables were handled, e.g. race horses (Seabiscuit), chicks, silkworms, fresh plants and flowers, etc. Freight houses and REA terminals be-came state-of-the-art in package handling. For anyone interested in including mail and express han-dling/delivery on a model railroad or in the history of a rather complex operation, this is a good resource book. There are many vintage pictures, mostly black-and-white, of trains, termi-nals, rolling stock and the people who made their living in the express and mail delivery business.
