These core marine requirements, together with its lightweight composition, compact features and long operational lifespan make our lightweight marine cables the ideal choice for cost-effective and high-performance marine applications – from offshore units to ships and high-speed craft.

Lightweight and compactThese cables are engineered using advanced design technology and thin wall insulation. This contributes to making the outer diameter of the cable smaller, the overall cable bundle more compact and the whole cable system more lightweight – without any need for added protection.

For lightweight vessels in particular, the space and weight-saving features of the DMFRO concept, used in our lightweight marine cables, ensures reduced fuel consumption, faster knot speeds and increased operating economy.

Tailor-made for demanding marine applications

Offshore and marine industries operate within increasingly narrow margins. By nature, the key differentiators focus on space, weight and safety. These in turn demand that cabling is lightweight, tolerant to high temperatures, and resistant to hot diesel fuels and other chemicals – ensuring the safety of crews and the agility of operations.

Less space needed Thanks to our thin wall material technology, the size is reduced with 30 %. Comparison shows a IEC 60092 1,5 sqmm EPR insulated wire and our 1,5 sqmm HFI 140 insulated wire.

The DMFRO concept uses our high performance materials HFI 140 as insulation and HFS 125 XL as sheathing for the best combination of halogen free, flame retardant (HFFR) properties.

Halogen free – ensuring a safer environmentAs a low smoke zero halogen solution, our lightweight marine cables release less smoke and no toxic fumes when exposed to fire, compared to previously options available.

In the event of fire, less smoke enables the crew to find exits faster and no toxic fumes has benefits both for the health and wellbeing of the crew, as well as reducing smoke damage to surrounding equipment. When a halogen cable is exposed to fire, small particles of halogen releases acidic gases which pose an aggressive threat to sensitive electronic equipment. For example, computers can be highly vulnerable to the fumes emitted from burning plastics.

Flame retardant with a high temperature rangeThe DMFRO concept, used in our lightweight marine cables, offers one of the highest temperature ratings on the market for a halogen free cable – an operational temperature range between -40ºC to +135ºC. The cable is flame retardant to the IEC standard 60332-3-25 and offers the rugged properties and high resistance to diesel fuels and oils required to meet NEK TS 606.

Our lightweight marine cables are available both as a standard range, or as a tailor-made solution.

Made to international standards

Our lightweight marine cables are certified to meet a wide range of international marine standards including:

DNV GL / (formerly Det Norske Veritas & Germanischer Lloyd) Rules for classification: Ships, offshore units and high speed and light craft - General power and lighting. Control. Instrumentation and communications. Approved by DNV GL according to class programme DNVGL-CP-0400 (Lightweight electric cables).

ABS / American Bureau of Shipping2010 Steel Vessel Rules 1-1-4/7.7, 1-1-A3 and 4-8-3/9.5: General power, lighting, control, instrumentation and communications for shipboard and offshore units.

BV / Bureau Veritas S.A. Rules for the classification of steel ships: Lightweight cable used for General power, lighting, control, instrumentation and communication.

CCS / China Classification SocietyMarine Electrical Cables Chapter 3, Part 4: Rules for Classification of sea-going Steel Ships 2018.

LR / Lloyds Register Marine applications for fixed wiring on ship and offshore installations.

NK / Nippon Kaiji KyokaiPower, Lighting, Control, Instrumentation and Communication cable.

The DMFRO lightweight marine cable is designed according to the military standard MIL-DTL-D389999. However, our engineers have developed a cable with an industry leading design concept range. This allows us to produce a wide variety of customised designs and yet still remain fully approved within the standards. We custom produce the solution at our manufacturing facilities in Sweden and China.

Mechanical properties

• Cores separately approved to the Def Stan 61-12 Part 18 specification for naval vessels and rated from -50ºC to +140ºC

• Optional screening: braids, foils or no screen at request

• Optional inner bedding jacket for improved cut- though resistance

• Outer jacket fully approved for mud resistance to NEK TS 606

• Cross-linked construction resists melt-and-flow under high temperature conditions

• Outer jacket maintains good moulding properties • Fluid resistance: diesel fuel, oil, grease, alcohol, petrol, drilling fluids and water
