LIGO Laboratory 2LIGO-G030289-00-M
Adv. LIGO Program Management (FAC)Scope
Conversion of the 2km vacuum system to 4 km» Move the mid-station BSC chamber to the end station connected to the
existing BSC chamber with a spool piece» Install a vacuum spool piece (pipe) in the mid-station where the BSC
chamber previously resided Portable Clean Rooms
» Build more HAM and BSC units to support more parallel installation activity and to support SEI and SUS clean assembly; for each observatory:
– 2 BSC-size clean rooms for high bay assembly area for SEI and SUS– 2 BSC-size clean rooms in the corner LVEA and 1 per end-station VEA for
SEI/SUS integration for “cartridge” installation into chambers– 1 additional HAM-size clean room for parallel installation of input and output optics– And 2 additional BSC-size clean rooms for LHO to eliminate need for clean rooms
to pass from one IFO to the other and to support parallel installation preparation
Input/Output Mode Cleaner Tube Replacement & Bake-out» Larger diameter vacuum tubes are needed for the input & output sections» Tubes must be vacuum baked (perhaps stand-alone)
LIGO Laboratory 3LIGO-G030289-00-M
Larger Diameter Mode (MC) Cleaner Tubes
Larger diameter tube
Larger diameter tube
Possibly largerdiameter tube

Adv. LIGO Program Management (FAC)Schedule
Procurement/contracting for the FAC equipment is not schedule critical (lots of float)
Installation of the IO vacuum tubes occurs during installation activities

FAC Costs
All costs are in base year dollars (un-escalated) Total cost = $4,182K including 22% contingency Proposed construction cost = $4,182K – 1.7 x $198K direct
labor incl. indirect = $3,845K Direct labor costs are borne by LIGO operations funds
LIGO Laboratory 6LIGO-G030289-00-M
FAC Costs: 2km to 4km Conversion
2km to 4km conversion estimate based on initial LIGO experience Planned as a subcontract ($370K) with Lab oversight/management
LIGO Laboratory 7LIGO-G030289-00-M
FAC Costs: Clean rooms
Costs based on initial LIGO actual costs for clean rooms, escalated to base year dollars
Includes estimate for in-house labor to place and oversee the clean room fabrication contract
$1,032K IFO1 + $747K IFO2 = $1,779K total
LIGO Laboratory 8LIGO-G030289-00-M
FAC Costs: I/O Tubes
$651K IFO1 + $585K IFO2 + $585K IFO3 = $1,821K total
