The first verse of Like a virgin, Madonna’s 1984 hit song and also exhibition title of Athene Galiciadis’ first solo presentation with BolteLang, goes: I made it through the wilderness Somehow I made it through Didn't know how lost I was Until I found you
These phrases not only reflect the origin of this exhibition, but also express Athene Galiciadis’ appreciation for the freedom she felt approaching and realising these new works. As many artists, Galiciadis does not follow a strict work procedure or concept, but rather lets her inspiration be carried by visions and daydreams. These reveries are materialised through drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations whose interac-tions, carefully orchestrated by the Swiss artist, result in harmonious site-specific pres-entations.
The title, resulting from the works as “écriture automatique”, not only describes the working process, but more concretely conveys the subject matter of Galiciadis’ empty, untainted vases, with their form, colour and haptic reminding the viewer of the young, female shape.

The third verse in Madonna’s song underlines this understanding of Galiciadis’ works, giving them a sensual aura. The vases are typical for Galiciadis’ work, which during the last years was led by her search for the perfect shape. She thus again and again embel-lished fabrics, organic forms and objects with geometrical patterns, thereby creating a recognizable language where geometry and organic abstraction merge into one.
Apart from a source of inspiration and expression, like a virgin also refers to the artist’s personal life changes, subconsciously influencing the coherence and strength of this long awaited solo exhibition.

Die erste Strophe von Like a virgin, Madonnas Songtitel von 1984 - und gleichzeitig Athene Galiciadis’ Ausstellungstitel ihrer ersten Einzelausstellung bei BolteLang - lautet: I made it through the wilderness Somehow I made it through Didn't know how lost I was Until I found you
Auf Athene Galiciadis’ Ausstellung bezogen lesen sich diese Zeilen wie ein Rückblick auf die Entstehung ihrer Show und als Danksagung an die Offenheit mit der sie diesem Prozess begegnen konnte. Wie viele Künstler, folgt Athene keinem strikten Arbeits-prozess oder Konzept, sondern lässt sich von Visionen und Tagträumen leiten. Diese Eingebungen verarbeitet sie zu Zeichnungen, Malereien, Skulpturen und Installatio-nen deren Zusammenspiel in den, in sich stimmigen, Ausstellungspräsentationen der Schweizer Künstlerin resultieren.
Der Titel, selbst Resultat einer Art von „écriture automatique“ rund um die entste-henden Arbeiten, beschreibt nicht nur Prozess, sondern bezieht sich auch ganz konkret auf die gezeigten Skulpturen, die an leere, jungfräuliche Vasen erinnern und in ihrer Körperhaftigkeit, Farbigkeit und Haptik an die Gestalten junger Frauen denken lassen.

Die dritte Strophe aus Madonnas Hit unterstreicht diese Leseweise und verleiht den Objekten eine sinnliche, sexuelle Aura. Die Vasenskulpturen sind typisch für Athenes Werk, in dem sie in den letzten Jahren, auf der Suche nach der perfekten Form, immer wieder organische Gebilde und zum Teil Gebrauchsgegenstände mit geometrischen Mustern überzogen hat und so eine wiedererkennbare Sprache entstehen liess in der Geometrie und organische Abstraktion zu einem verschmolzen werden.
like a virgin bezieht sich nicht zuletzt auch auf persönliche Veränderungen im Leben der Künstlerin. Deren unbewusste Verarbeitung mit verantwortlich ist für die Kohä-renz und Kraft dieser lang erwarteten Einzelausstellung.
