Que te guste lo que haces es la clave y ten en cuenta que no gustarle a todos también es saludable. En el último lanzamiento de Likes, en New York, conocimos a Igers que pasan de 100 mil followers y otros que apenas llegan a 100. Todos con gustos fotográficos muy diferentes pero también con una característica en común: Ir a una fiesta, como van a su iPhone, para pasarla bien y divertirse mientras tratan de hacer lo mejor. Y eso es algo que amamos. Whether you are taken by its culture, history, folklore or its musical roots, there is no denying that “Americana” is imbedded in our everyday lives and has retained its prevalent influence on the outlook of today and that of decades prior.

It might manifest itself through an old automobile, a beautiful building, a rusted sign or that old jazz record on your shelf. You may find yourself contemplating, if only for a brief moment, its evocative mysticism or you may, on the other hand, choose to document it.

All in all, the underlying fact remains, “Americana” is a world within itself that has traversed the length of time to inspire generations to come.

Ya sea por su cultura, historia, folklore o sus raíces musicales, no se puede negar que “Americana” está incrustada en nuestra vida cotidiana y ha conservado su influencia predominante en el panorama de hoy y claramente en la de décadas anteriores.

Se manifiesta a si misma a través de los carros antiguos, un hermoso edificio, carteles oxidados e incluso aquel antiguo disco de jazz que tienes. Te puedes encontrar contemplando, así sea por un pequeño instante, su misticismo evocador o, por otro lado, puedes optar por documentarlo.

I’m relatively new to the world of Instagram. The day I opened my account my friend @cbetancourt9 was teaching me the ropes: His favorite filters, his favorite HT’s, his favorite users: “You must follow @cucinadigitale” He commanded. So I did. And then day after day, Nicolee’s work kept mesmerizing me with its beauty, its simplicity and her unique view of her beloved Rome. I quickly became one of her many fans. Who is this woman from California who moved to Rome chasing love and now has this romance with vintage bikes, old fiats and colorful clotheslines? Her work became an inspiration. The day she followed me back felt like graduation day, and having the opportunity to do my first interview ever with her is a gift and a true joy. The chase is over, and it was worth it.

Soy relativamente nuevo en el mundo de Instagram. El día que abrí mi cuenta mi amigo @cbetancourt9 me enseñó como funciona todo: sus filtros favoritos, hashtags, usuarios… “debes seguir a @cucinadigitale” me ordenó. Y eso hice. Entonces, día tras día, el trabajo de Nicolee me cautivaba con su belleza, simplicidad y punto de vista de su adorada Roma. Marcel Rasquin: You have become a celebrity in Instagram. People from all over the world are enchanted by your daily snaps. Before we talk about the artist you are today, I’d like to go back to the early days. I’d like to know why and how you became a photographer? When did you first start taking pictures?Nicolee Drake: I first started taking pictures as a teenager. I had an old Nikkormat FT that I used to carry around with me everywhere. I have no idea where that thing is now. I wish I still had it.

MR: Do you recall that moment when you realized your work had transcended you? That day you said to yourself “Wow! I have an audience to tend to”?ND: I don’t recall one particular moment. Instead it was an overwhelming understanding that people were tuned in to see more and that I had to produce. This pushed me to do better.

Marcel Rasquin: Te has convertido en una celebridad en Instagram. Personas alrededor de todo el mundo están encantadas con tus publicaciones diarias. Antes de hablar de la artista que eres hoy, me gustaría volver a los días previos. Quisiera saber ¿Por qué y cómo te convertiste en fotógrafa? ¿Cuándo fue la primera vez que sacaste fotos? Nicolee Drake: Empecé a sacar fotos cuando era una adolescente. Tenía una antigua Nikkormat FT que solía llevar a todos lados. Ahora no tengo idea de donde habrá quedado esa cámara. Desearía tenerla aún.

MR: ¿Recuerdas cuál fue el momento en el que te diste cuenta que tu trabajo te había superado? ¿El día que te dijiste a ti misma “¡Wow! Tengo una audiencia que atender”?ND: No recuerdo un momento particular. Más bien fue el entendimiento abrumador de que había personas pendientes de ver más y que entonces debía trabajar más. Eso me impulsó a mejorar.

MR: Some people have a very clear notion of when they heard the calling of their craft, a sort of “eureka” moment when they realized that this was not just a hobby, but the thing they wanted to do for the rest of their lives. Did you have such an epiphany? Did you find your vocation in street photography? ND: I realized I wanted to do this for the rest of my life early on but it didn’t seem practical. Instead, I went to college and joined the 9-5. Then the proverbial light went off and I began my MFA studies in New Media. Technology will always be a crush but my first love is photographing people. I especially love street photography because it’s a completely spontaneous and unstaged environment.

MR: You seem to find beauty in little, simple, even mundane things. You force us to look twice at the things around us and suddenly they take new meanings. What do you look for in a photo? What do you consider a photo worthy of sharing? What interests you about life that you just keep trying to grasp within the frame?ND: When I first started with Instagram I used it as a way of exploring and learning about Rome. I would stumble across interesting or unusual things or situations and I would stop and photograph them. It was like pausing time for me, to remember and record the life going on and changing around me.

MR: Algunas personas tienen una noción bastante clara de cuál es su vocación en la vida, una suerte de momento “Eureka” cuando se dan cuenta de que no es solo un hobby, sino lo que quieren hacer por el resto de su vida. ¿Has tenido una epifanía de ese estilo? ¿Encontraste tu vocación en la fotografía de calle? ND: Me di cuenta de que quería hacer esto por el resto de mi vida a temprana edad, pero no me parecía práctico. En cambio, fui a la Universidad y me uní al trabajo de 9-5. Entonces, la luz proverbial se encendió y empecé mi Master de Bellas Artes en Medios Alternativos. La tecnología siempre ha sido uno de mis amores, pero mi primer amor es fotografiar gente. Especialmente amo la fotografía de calle porque es espontánea y libre de escenarios.

MR: Tu pareces encontrar la belleza en lo pequeño, simple, e incluso en cosas mundanas. Nos obligas a ver dos veces las cosas a nuestro alrededor logrando que de repente tengan un nuevo significado. ¿Qué buscas en una foto? ¿Qué te hace considerar una foto como merecedora de ser compartida? ¿Qué intereses tienes en la vida que intentas captar en tus encuadres?ND: Cuando empecé en Instagram lo utilizaba como una forma de explorar y aprender sobre Roma. Yo me encontraba con situaciones interesantes o inusuales y me detenía a fotografiarlas. Era como detener el tiempo para mi, para recordar y registrar la vida que avanzaba y cambiaba a mi alrededor.

MR: There is one feature of your gallery that I find striking and revealing: consistency. Both aesthetically and thematically. You seem to be developing and discovering your own language, your own style. Is that a conscious decision or do you just not think that much about it?ND: It’s a bit of both. I try to keep my editing style as consistent as possible. It changes a little as new editing apps come out but I do my best to keep similar tones. In terms of themes, there are a few things that come up regularly like the bici and the fiat 500 but I try to balance it with everyday life in Italy. Then again, there are just some unpredictable moments that happen in front of me, and I have to snap.

MR: I’d love to join you one day in a photo excursion, you seem to do one every day. Can you take us through your process?ND: Basically, I have just two rules in my routine: patience and eyes open. When I head out, my phone is in hand, my camera app is on and I look around. Since by now I’ve covered a lot of Rome, I try to take new routes to see things from different perspectives. I also live by the phrase “good things come to those who wait”. Sometimes a photo just comes to you, and sometimes you just have to be patient and wait for it.

MR: Hay una cosa en tu galería que yo encuentro llamativo y revelador: la consistencia. Tanto en lo temático como lo estético. Pareces haber desarrollado y decubierto tu lenguaje propio, tu propio estilo. ¿Fue una decision consciente o no piensas mucho sobre eso?ND: Es un poco de ambas. Intento mantener mi estilo al editar tan consistente como sea posible. Cambia un poco en la medida que salen nuevas aplicaciones para editar, pero hago mi mayor esfuerzo para mantener tonos similares. En lo que respecta a los temas, hay muchas cosas con las que me encuentro regularmente como la bicicleta o los fiat 500, pero trato de balancearlo con la cotidianidad de Italia, Pero también hay algunos momentos impredecibles que ocurren en frente de mi y ahí es cuando tengo que disparar.

MR: Me gustaría hacer una excursion fotográfica contigo, tu pareces hacerlas todos los días. ¿Podrías darnos un recorrido por tu proceso?ND: Básicamente tengo dos normas en mi rutina: paciencia y los ojos abiertos. Cuando salgo mi teléfono está en mi mano, la cámara siempre abierta y miro alrededor. Como ya he recorrido gran parte de Roma, trato de tomar nuevas rutas para ver las cosas desde diferentes perspectivas. Creo en la frase “las cosas buenas les llegan a los que esperan”. Algunas veces las fotos simplemente llegan a ti, otras tienes que ser paciente y esperarlas.

MR: What does Rome mean to you?ND: Home. Chaos. Unpredictable. Cozy.

MR: Let’s get technical, what is your regular editing tool? Do you often use Instagram’s preset filters or do you edit your photos with a different app? What are you using lately?ND: Snapseed and Photoforge2 are faithful friends. Lately I’ve been loving the Afterglow app. In Instagram, I usually always use the Rise or Valencia filters.

MR: Do you usually get your photo in a quick one snap or do you take your time and do lots of shots until you “get it right”?ND: It depends on the situation. If my subject isn’t moving I set up my shot. If they’re moving I try to foresee what they will do next and where I need to be to get the best frame. Either way, composition is always first for me.

MR: Do you pay your bills clicking away with your camera or do you have to combine your photographic work with some other job? Have you found a way to make a living with your art?ND: I wish I could do this full-time. I develop websites to pay the bills.

MR: ¿Qué significa Roma para ti?ND: Hogar. Caos. Impredecible. Acogedor.

MR: Vayamos a lo técnico, ¿Cuál es tu herramienta regular de edición? ¿Usas los filtros predeterminados de Instagram o de otras aplicaciones? ¿Qué has usado últimamente?ND: Snapseed y Photoforge2 son mis amigos fieles. Últimamente me ha encantado la aplicación Afterglow. En Instagram suelo usar los filtros Rise y Valencia.

MR: ¿Normalmente sacas tus fotos rápidamente con una toma o te tomas tu tiempo y haces muchas fotos hasta que consigues “la correcta”?ND: Depende de la situación. Si mi sujeto no se está moviendo simplemente cuadro y tomo mi foto. Si se está moviendo, trato de predecir que hará a continuación para calcular donde podría obtener la mejor toma. De cualquier forma, la composición es siempre lo primero para mi.

MR: I find asking an artist to describe their work to be a futile exercise. The work speaks for itself. But I wonder if you have a strong driving concept behind your work that fuels your daily quest for beautiful images. Which one is it?ND: I’m a realist and I think that shows up in my work. To be honest, I like to get out and just shoot what I see.

MR: One last question, is there a story behind your username? Why cucinadigitale?ND: Since everything in Italy is about food, I was looking for a good way to express what I do that was relatable in Italian and satisfied a bit of hunger. CucinaDigitale means “digital kitchen”-- in essence, I cook pixels.

MR: Considero que es un trabajo inútil pedirle a un artista que describa su trabajo. El trabajo habla por si mismo. Pero me pregunto ¿tienes algún concepto detrás tu trabajo que impulsa tu búsqueda diaria de hermosas imágenes?ND: Soy realista y considero que eso se muestra en mi trabajo. Para ser honesta, me gusta salir y simplemente fotografiar lo que veo.

MR: La última pregunta, ¿hay alguna historia detrás de tu sobrenombre? ¿por qué cucinadigitale?ND: Como todo en Italia se trata de comida, buscaba una manera de expresar que lo que hago está relacionado con Italia y que a la vez satisface una especie de apetito. CucinaDigitale significa “cocina digital”, en esencia, yo cocino pixels.

The adventurous spirit that seeks to explore and be surprised at every turn, always attracted me. So I started shooting... Berlin arises from a lot of dimensions that always invoke partying, they’re complex and not always happy dimensions. This allegory comes from a scintillating past as the historical capital of the 20th century that, among the white lights of restoration, reconstruction and suturing of the Cold War wounds, is compared to the miserable blackouts of the war and holocaust. A city where you constantly need to ask What-happened-there-where-I-was-standing-two-minutes-ago”? It’s a city where history is being hatched, and its walls smell like it.

Now, the city reveals quiet pedestrians, a festive environment, order and, at the same time, a diversity of carnival dimensions. The scars of a century marked by division, turn the concrete into a enriching dance pattern where art, partying and the pilgrimage sense of the “millennials” generation come together to give the city the spirit of a shiny capital. The pendulum changed, from the end of the world’s architecture to flowers in the balcony.

Welcome to Berlin, the Spree’s pearl.

Berlín surge de varias dimensiones que siempre alegan fiesta, son dimensiones complejas y no siempre felices. Esta alegoría surge de un pasado estroboscópico, como capital de la historia del siglo XX que, entre luces blancas de restauración, reconstrucción y sutura de las heridas de la Guerra Fría, se compara con los apagones miserables de guerra y holocausto. Una ciudad en la que constantemente debes preguntarte Qué-pasó-ahí-donde-estaba-parado-hace-dos-minutos. Es una ciudad en la que dentro de sus paredes se cocina la historia, y siempre huele a tal.

2. What inspires you?I am inspired by a desire to show people the world in a way they have never looked at it before.

3. How much time do you spend on Instagram everyday? Usually about 1-2 hours if you count editing and posting my own photos, as well as viewing other photos.

4. What has influenced you the most? Instagram is a hobby, an addiction, and an outlet. It’s a fun and safe place to learn, share, and make connections with other people who share a love for photography.

5. What advice do you give to people to achieve so many followers and likes per photo like you? Don’t worry about the number of followers you have or the number of likes a photo gets. Focus on creating great, high-quality images that you love. Reach out to fellow photographers and create positive connections. Consistently posting nice images and making positive connections will help expand your Instagram network. Never make it a competition about number of followers or likes, as those things aren’t necessarily a judge of how good of a photographer someone is.

Contacta otros fotógrafos y crea conexiones positivas. Sube, de forma consistente, imágenes buenas y, junto a las conexiones positivas que hiciste anteriormente, podrás expandir tu red de Instagram. Nunca lo conviertas en una competencia de números de seguidores o likes, esos detalles no son necesariamente muestras de que tan buen fotógrafo es o deja de ser una persona.

6. How have you benefited from IG? Embracing Instagram and mobile photography has helped me to think like a photographer everywhere I go. I create images of places and moments I might have just walked right by in the past. This has improved and expanded my photography greatly. More importantly, however, Instagram has served as a way for me to meet a ton of incredible people who have become close friends outside the photography realm. It has also brought me closer to friends I already had before Instagram even existed...

7. Who do you admire the most and why?I admire anyone who has figured out a way to do good and make positive changes in the world with their photography, as that is something I aspire to do.

8. Which talent you will like to have?I would love to have the talent to perfectly center all my images that need perfect alignment. I have had to toss so many photos that just aren’t quite centered.

6. ¿Cómo te has beneficiado de IG?Encontrar Instagram y la fotografía móvil me ha ayudado a pensar como fotógrafo en cualquier sitio al que voy. Creo imágenes de lugares y momentos que, en el pasado habría pasado pasado por alto y continuado caminando sin más. Esto ha mejorado y expandido mi fotografía enormemente. Sin embargo, lo más importante, es que Instagram me ha servido como una forma para conocer increíbles personas que se han convertido en grandes amigos fuera del ámbito fotográfico. A la vez, ha servido para que retome conexiones con amigos que tenía incluso antes de que Instagram existiera pero con quienes había perdido el contacto.

7. ¿A quién admiras y por qué?Admiro a todo aquel que ha descubierto una forma para hacer cosas buenas y cambio positivos en el mundo a través de sus fotografías, y eso es algo que yo aspiro lograr.

8. ¿Qué talento te gustaría tener?Me gustaría tener el talento de poder centrar perfectamente todas mis imágenes que necesitan una alineación perfecta. Tengo muchas fotos que he descartado pues simplemente no están perfectamente centradas.

9. If you could shoot any photo in the world, which photo would you like to shoot?There are so many things and places on my list I’d like to shoot, that it’s hard to pick just one. One thing I’d love to gain photography access to is the Large Hadron Collider. That structure looks pretty incredible.

10. What’s your most beloved or important photo?Of the photos I’ve posted on Instagram lately, my favorite is the one of my mother standing in Grundtvig’s Church in Copenhagen.

11. What do you consider your greates achivement? I like to think my greatest achievement is yet to come.

12. What filters you use more?Valencia is the filter I use the most. I like that it’s subtle and doesn’t have vignetting like most of the others do.

13. Which other apps do you use to edit your photos?I don’t always use external apps, but if I do, I use Image Straightener to straighten, Snapseed for editing, and Squaready for precise control of my square crops.

Whenever someone manages to combine these three mystic categories in one single photo, he or she gets my attention. The photos I have chosen are the ones I come back to over and over again. El mundo necesita más color y yo amo el HDR. Yo sigo a @felecool casi desde el inicio de Instagram. Vi por primera vez el estilo HDR en sus entradas y estaba realmente impresionada. Me gustó, y mucho. Yo ya sacaba fotos con mi iPhone antes de buscar aplicaciones que me permitieran generar este tipo de imágenes. Era bastante difícil lograr fotografìas HDR con mi celular y editarlas con aplicaciones. Compré una Canon y aprendí a fotografiar a tres exposiciones y a editar con Lightroom.Encontré fotos de @kiwiboy y vi sus fotografìas HDR y lo empecé a seguir. Es un poco diferente, pero, de alguna manera, quería que mis fotos fueran como las de ellos.Fue un largo camino y aún no estoy satisfecha todo el tiempo, pero practico mucho y me encanta ver el mundo lleno de color.

The world needs more color and I love the HDR style. I am following @felecool almost since the beginning of Instagram. I saw the first time the HDR style on his feed and was really impressed - I love that style very much. I was shooting with my iPhone before and tried a lot of different apps to make a look like this. It was very difficult to reach a good HDR picture with an iPhone and edit with apps.I bought a Canon and started to learn to shoot in three exposures and edit with Lightroom.I found pics of @kiwiboy and saw his HDR style and started to follow. They are a bit different but somehow I wanted to have my pics like theirs. (kiwiboy and felecool).It was a long way and I’m still not satisfied everytime, but I practice much and I love to see the world being colorful.

Aún uso mi iPhone algunas veces, pero es bastante complicado si quieres editar las fotos bien, muchas veces se genera bastante ruido en la imagen y es ahí cuando uso mi Canon 7D, principalmente en los paisajes. No creo que cambie mi estilo en el futuro, soy una especie de adicta a los colores y me gusta más el mundo así.

I still use my iPhone sometimes but it’s very difficult if you like to make a good edit, sometimes you have too many noises in the picture.
