2SITE SELECTION

WHERESHOULDLILACS BE PLMTED

The best site for a lilac is an open area with good soil drainage •. Fullsun is.best for ••ximum bloom. Shade part of the day will not materiallyreduce flowering but the amount of bloom will lessen as the amount ofshade increases. Good drainage is needed since lilacs do not like "wetfeet" and will not grow well in poorly drained soil. They will stand afair amount of drought although newly set plants may need water duringthe first year for successful establishment.Mass planting is recommended for all public areas for best landscapeeffect and reduction of maintenance injury. A bed of lilacs with only aone to one and a half foot of open space between the foliage masses 5'planting on center will fill in quickly, crowding out any weeds andpreventing injury from mowers, plows or other equipment. If widerspacing is necessary, filler shrubs, to be removed later, can be added solong as there is a plan calling for their eventual removal. Safer plansinclude filling the initial space with annual flowers, cover it with atextured mulch. such as bark, or use of a groundcover such as myrtle(Vinca minor) 01' paChysandra (Pachysandra terminal is).Once established. lilacs will survive in a wide range of soils but newlyset plants need a well drained soil with pH between 6 and 7 or they willbe very slow getting started. If the soil is less than ideal, organicmatter will improve both drainage and moisture retention. If organicfertilizer is desired, bonemea1 works well although it must be appliedahead of the planting and worked into the soil because the nutrients arereleased very slowly.

The Bureau of Environment of the New Hampshire Department of Transporta-tion prescribes the following mixture in their landscape plantingspecifications: ..When the ~xisting soil is to be replaced the following· shall beadded and thoroughly mixed with each cubic yard of loam backfill:(Note 1 cu. ft.' is approximately four-fifths of a bushel) 3 cubicfeet of old'cow manure or 4 cubic feet of horse manure; 4 cubic feetof peat moss~ 10. pounds of 10-6-4 fertilizer minimum 35 per centwater insoluble nitrogen (W.I.N.); .and 15 pounds of groundagr;cul-tural limestone.

The N.H. Department 9f Transportation mixture varies somewhat infertilizer recommendation but has been a very successful mixture;n siteswhere existing soil conditi"onswere poor. The existing soil was removedand the above loam backfill mixture added. .

REGIONAL LILACS

I. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (So vulgaris)

At the convention in Rochester this spring, I asked a number of people tosupply a list of lilacs that did well in their region. Here is the first. It is a list from Joel Margaretteri in Leona Valley, California. None ofthe regional lists are expected to be exhaustive or challenging. Theyaresimple lists of lilac cultivars that, over the years, have proven reliablein the region. Joel sent~ m~ch longer list but 11m reporting only thoseSyringa vulgaris cultivars that do "well" in the mountains of s.outherncalifornia •. Joel writes "I have marked those I have and their perfor-mance. Generally the petals and trusses are larger than those I have seenin the east.1I
