THE LONGEST TABLE @ OLE MISS

Creator/Chair, University of Mississippi, 2019, planning committee 2020. As a freshman, pitched

idea to Chancellor and Division of Diversity and Community Engagement; in 2019, planned and hosted

inaugural Longest Table for 400 people to nurture inclusion and celebrate diversity.

“Lily Sweet was the brainchild of the event but also had the courage to

say she wanted to be part she wanted to be a part of creating the Longest

Table experience for our university. Thank you for your courage and commitment to this project.” Vice Chancellor Caldwell

“Lily Sweet I hope we start a new tradition right here tonight …. When

you have the opportunity to have a grand idea to create something as special as this evening, please do like Lily Sweet and don’t hesitate to

bring it forward … your example, compassion, warmth, and caring you

exemplifies what this evening is all about tonight. We are just very proud that you are one of ours. And we’re proud that you’ve got two more years

to come up with a few more fantastic ideas for us.” Chancellor Boyce

THE LONGEST TABLE CLASS 2018 AND 2019

Mentor, Tallahassee, FL, 2018-19. Committed to seeing The Longest Table continue in my hometown,

I mentored the last two chairs for the event, guiding them through everything from logistics to

fundraising to promotions. I am proud to say that in 2019, our superintendent declared the Longest Table

as an annual event for Leon County Schools. Specifically, I created a DIY Guide so that students could

replicate the event by following my guide step-by-step.

THE LONGEST TABLE 2017 (CLASS OF 2018)

Creator/Chair, Tallahassee, FL, September 2018. My senior year in high school, I was appalled to

learn of racist incidents in a local high school. I attended a diverse middle school and high school and

valued my friends with ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds different from mine. I recognized that

part of the issue was that my generation doesn’t talk to each other, so I decided to create and host The

Longest Table specifically for high school students. I’m proud to say that we had students from 10 of the

11 schools attend that first year. My duties included:

• Working with Mayor Andrew Gillum and our superintendent to have the event recognized as a

community program.

• Creating/organizing community event/dinner for all 11 high schools in Leon County.

• Responsibility for all logistics: park permitting, table/chair rentals, food, and speakers.

• Recruitment of volunteers for setup and cleanup and to be table hosts throughout the dinner.

• Fundraising for and writing a grant to underwrite all food for the event.

• Creating all marketing materials including flyers, online event graphics, and online invitations

and registrations.

• Designed logo for event.

• Promoting event in local media and on social media platforms.
