The bereaved families of the victims of an alleged drag-race accident at Tshivhilwi outside Thohoyandou are still in the dark about the release of the driver of the vehicle on bail. Mphedziseni Mawela (28) was re- leased on R2 000 bail by the Tshaulu Periodical Court on Tuesday. He was driving the vehicle that had alleg- edly killed seven community members. Mawela had been in hospital since the accident happened three weeks ago. He was released from hospital last Friday and was in police custody. He made his first court appearance in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was formally charged on seven counts of murder. On Tuesday, he appeared in the Tshaulu Periodical Court again for a formal bail application, and bail of R2 000 was granted to him. No conditions were attached to his bail. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mu- laudzi, the police had taken blood samples from the accused and were still waiting for the results. He is to appear again in court on 29 May. Reacting after hearing that the ac- cused had been granted bail, an angry Mr Daniel Rangani, who lost his daughter, Vhusiwana (25,) and had his granddaughter, Tendani Nephalama (2), seriously injured in the accident, said the police had not been fair to them. “The police owe us an apology. How can they take someone who has wronged us so much to court without our knowledge? We were not told that he had been released from hospital. As families, I think we deserve to know everything about this case. Not letting us know about his appearance is an infringement of our rights,” he added. Rangani said they would have mobilised the community if they had known and gone to court to urge the court not to give him bail. “We are greatly saddened. R2 000 is nothing compared to the damage and pain he caused us as families. How are we go- ing to look at him when we meet him on the street? I suspect something did not go right here; the familes need an explanation,” he said. Mulaudzi said the police would make sure that all the families were informed about the progress of the case. “This is a very serious case and the families need to know everything that is happeneing. We will make sure our officers are dispatched to the differ- ent families to notify them formally,” he said. The accident happened late on Saturday, 10 March. It is alleged that two cars were racing along the busy village street at Tshidzini when one of the drivers lost control and ploughed the car into a group of people. Seven of them died and four, including the driver, were injured. The victims are Munei Munyai (12), Tsumbedzo Ravhanga (13), Vusiwana Rhangani (25), Thifhelimbilu Magalig- wa (31), Kenneth Nemaungani (24), Wilson Ravhanga (71) and Daphne Mbedzi (26). Police scene experts comb the spot at Tshidzini where the accident occurred. Families of the victims are not happy with the police, saying that they are not keeping the families informed about the case. The last straw was when they took the suspect to court without even informing the families about his appearance.

Anguished family members are being comforted by the MEC for Roads and Transport, Mr Pitsi Moloto, after the accident. In our photo, Moloto is talking to Mr Daniel Rangani, who lost his daughter, Vhusiwana (25) in the accident. The families are now crying foul that the suspect appeared in court behind their backs. They are also worried about the small amount of bail (R2 000) granted to the suspect.

The bereaved families of the victims of an alleged drag-race accident at Tshivhilwi outside Thohoyandou are still in the dark about the release of the driver of the vehicle on bail.

Mphedziseni Mawela (28) was re-leased on R2 000 bail by the Tshaulu Periodical Court on Tuesday. He was driving the vehicle that had alleg-edly killed seven community members. Mawela had been in hospital since the accident happened three weeks ago. He was released from hospital last Friday and was in police custody.

He made his fi rst court appearance in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was formally charged on seven counts of murder. On Tuesday, he appeared in the Tshaulu Periodical Court again for a formal bail application, and bail of R2 000 was granted to him. No conditions were attached to his bail.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mu-

laudzi, the police had taken blood samples from the accused and were still waiting for the results. He is to appear again in court on 29 May.

Reacting after hearing that the ac-cused had been granted bail, an angry Mr Daniel Rangani, who lost his daughter, Vhusiwana (25,) and had his granddaughter, Tendani Nephalama (2), seriously injured in the accident, said the police had not been fair to them.

How are we go-

ing to look at him when we meet him on the street? I suspect something did not go right here; the familes need an explanation,” he said.

Mulaudzi said the police would make sure that all the families were informed about the progress of the case. “This is a very serious case and the families need to know everything that is happeneing. We will make sure our offi cers are dispatched to the differ-ent families to notify them formally,” he said.

The accident happened late on Saturday, 10 March. It is alleged that two cars were racing along the busy village street at Tshidzini when one of the drivers lost control and ploughed the car into a group of people. Seven of them died and four, including the driver, were injured.

The victims are Munei Munyai (12), Tsumbedzo Ravhanga (13), Vusiwana Rhangani (25), Thifhelimbilu Magalig-wa (31), Kenneth Nemaungani (24), Wilson Ravhanga (71) and Daphne Mbedzi (26).

Mother and daughter raped in Kutama

Non-registration hampers service delivery

Mother and son arrested after alleged rape

6-year-old girl killed by crocodile

Police’s electricity reconnected again

Members of the Tshikwarani community in the Kutama area are still shocked, following a disturbing incident where a 49-year-old mother and her 16-year-old daughter were al-legedly raped by two unknown men last Sunday.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Sgt Thili-vhali Maloa, said that two un-known men gained entrance into the house through a door that was not locked and allegedly raped

the woman and her daughter. “The men allegedly smeared a

lotion on their hands before forc-ing themselves onto the mother and her daughter,” she said. Maloa added that two counts of sexual assault had been opened with the police.

“The incident happened at 02:00,” she said, adding that although the two men had not covered their faces, the victims were not able to identify them. The suspects produced a knife

before allegedly raping the vic-tims. “The mother was also stabbed in the arm during the incident,” she said.

“Police investigations are still continuing,” said Maloa. She warned members of the com-munity against the two suspects. “Whoever sees them must just alert the police and not try to go anywhere near them, as they might be dangerous,” warned Maloa.

People who delay registering their children with Home Af-fairs make it difficult for the government to deliver effective services in this country.

This is the view of Mr Simon

The Thohoyandou police have arrested a man on a charge of rape and his mother on a charge of defeating the ends of justice, in respect of the infor-mation about the alleged rape.

The 23-year-old man and his mother, aged 40, were arrested at Tswinga outside Thohoyandou, following a complaint laid with the police by the victim’s teacher. According to police information, the incidents leading to the ar-rests took place between March 2010 and May 2011.

The police said the 11-year-old victim and the suspects were related and lived together in the same house.

Thohoyandou police spokes-person Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe

said the first incident allegedly occurred in March 2010. It is al-leged that the suspect pretended that he wanted the girl to clean his room. There were two other girls who were playing outside.

Inside the room, the suspect allegedly undressed the girl and raped her. The girl is said to have informed her aunt on her return, but the aunt did nothing to help her.

The suspect allegedly raped the girl again in April 2011. The suspect’s mother was away and he once again lured the girl to his room.

It is said that the suspect ap-parently undressed the victim and raped her once more. The girl is said to have reported the matter

to her aunt, who decided not to pursue the matter.

In May 2011, the victim and the aunt, as well as the suspect, were together at home when the the suspect allegedly tried to drag the victim to his room in the presense of his mother. She, however, did nothing.

The victim reported the matter to her teacher, who in turn re-ported the matter to the police. A case was opened and the suspects were arrested last Thursday. The aunt was arrested for defeating the ends of justice.

The two appeared in the Tho-hoyandou Magistrate’s Courts on Friday and the case was post-poned to 29 March. The suspects are both in custody.

A six-year-old girl died a pain-ful death, when she was at-tacked and severely mauled by a crocodile while swimming in the Save River at Dombo vil-lage outside Beit Bridge.

Villagers who witnessed the incident that occurred last Fri-day told Limpopo Mirror that the victim, Winnet Zikimo of Dombo village, was attacked by the reptile while she was playing in the water.

Police spokesperson Assistant Insp Charity Mazula said that the victim had gone to the river to swim in the company of a juve-nile friend, Godfrey.

“Winnet was swimming with her friend when the crocodile emerged and attacked her. On realising that his friend had been attacked, Godfrey ran away and alerted other villagers and they went to the river. When they reached the river, they saw the

crocodile feasting on the girl and it took some effort to chase it away. They pelted it with stones, but initially it remained defiant. It then finally moved back into the river, leaving the dead girl, and that was when the villagers managed to retrieve the body,” Mazula said.

Recently, an 11-year-old Beit Bridge boy was mauled to death by a huge crocodile while swim-ming in the Limpopo River.

Manyuha to act as executive mayorThe portfolio head of corporate and shared services at the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Lucas Manyuha, has been appointed as the acting executive mayor of the municipality.

This follows the appointment of the former executive mayor, Ms Florence Dzhombere, as the MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison.

Manyuha had led the predomi-nantly rural Mutale Municipality for two consecutive terms as the mayor.

The media liaison officer of the Vhembe District Municipality,

Mr Moses Shibambu, said that Manyuha would be acting in the po-sition until such time that the post was filled. There are, however, rumors that Ms Livhuwani Mabidzha could be the next mayor of Vhembe.

Mabidzha had served as council-lor of the district municipality for many years.

She is currently the serving as a member of the national council of provinces, representing Limpopo. Mabidzha is also a member of the provincial executive committee of the ANC.

Clr Lucas Manyuha is the new act ing executive mayor of V h e m b e D i s t r i c t Municipality.

After more than a week of literally being left in the dark, the electricity supply to the Makhado SAPS in Louis Trich-ardt was finally reconnected Wednesday morning.

The supply to the SAPS’ build-ing in Krogh Street was cut by order of the landlord, due to the failure of the Public Works Department (PWD) to pay the building’s rent for the past seven months.

Last week, Mr Russel Wolpe, one of the owners of the building, explained that the initial lease agreement between them and the PWD with regard to the building had already expired in August 2010. After trying in vain to get the PWD to commit to a new agreement, Wolpe said they then continued leasing the building to the police, without a contract, on a month-to-month basis until August 2011. Up to that stage, rent payments were made, but then payment stopped.

“Since September 2011, we have not received a single cent,” Wolpe said. He added that he tried everything to resolve the matter with the PWD. “Every-body says they will do some-thing, but nothing happens.”

Wolpe finally resorted to in-structing a private electrician to disconnect the police’s electric-

ity supply on 9 March, after a call from his attorneys a month earlier for the PWD to rectify the situation within seven days and start paying was again met with silence.

The pol ice’s provincia l spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, refrained from an-swering questions relating to the issue of non-payment last week, referring all enquiries to the PWD as they are responsible for the account. When asked to comment on the situation at the station this week, Mulaudzi once again responded by referring all enquiries to the PWD.

Exactly a week after the initial media enquiry, the PWD finally responded with an explanation on Tuesday. They confirmed that the background leading up to the cutting of the electricity supply was correct, but opted to play the blaming game by shifting the responsibility onto the police.

“The National Department of Public Works did not receive the procurement instruction (PI) from the SAPS to renew the lease legally. As a result, the department had been paying the landlord the rent on a month-to-month basis until November 2011.

As we could not continue with the month-to-month arrange-

ment, the rent fell into arrears,” said the PWD’s national director of media relations, Mr Thami Mchunu.

Mchunu said that there was a process underway to try and resolve the situation with the SAPS as soon as possible. “The National Department of Public Works is in negotiations with the SAPS to issue the PI, so that we can do the work quickly,” Mchunu said.

Shortly before the electricity supply to the police’s building was reconnected on Wednesday morning, the Limpopo Mirror contacted Wolpe once more. He said that he had spoken to a senior official at the PWD in Polokwane on Tuesday and that the official had assured him that payment would be made within seven working days.

“He told me ‘You can recon-nect, the money will come’,” Wolpe said.

After this assurance, Wolpe said, he had instructed the electri-cian to reconnect the electricity supply. He warned, however, that should he not receive pay-ment by 5 April, he would once again have the electricity supply disconnected.

“This is apparently the only way to do things … it’s really a shame,” Wolpe said.

Ramabulana of Home Affairs. Ramabulana and his colleagues recently went to different rural communities in Vhembe, render-ing all the department’s services in a mobile truck. Speaking at

Tanda village near Folovhod-we under the Musina Mu-nicipality, Ra-mabulana said that the mobile office helped people to ap-ply for identity documents and also to regis-ter births. He added that the challenge was that many of t h e p a r e n t s

were ignorant and delayed the registering of their children.

“The delay in registering child-ren is a disadvantage to the same people, as their applications for government grants cannot be pro-cessed,” said Ramabulana.

“People who are not registered in the population statistics make it difficult for government to have the correct figure of its citizens. Unfortunately, this seriously af-fects government in its planning for health, sanitation and educa-tion,” said Ramabulana.

According to him, the situation is even worse in the farm areas. “The more worrying thing is that most of the people on the farms are undocumented Zimbabweans and Mozambiquans, so it is dif-ficult to identify people who are local citizens.”

Mr Simon Ramabulana assisted the people who came to Home Affairs for different services.

“Father of electricity” buried at MbaleniWell-known electrical con-tractor Mpfariseni David Swuhana (74) of Miluwani in Sibasa was buried at the Mbaleni cemetery on Sat-urday. The funeral was a celebration as mourners sang and danced throughout the service.

The funeral service was held at the Thohoyandou Indoor Centre.

Muendeulu, as he was af-fectionately known, was a re-spected and admired business-man and community leader. He passed away last week Tuesday.

The packed hall and some mourners outside did not shed a tear as the family requested that it be a celebration of a life

well lived. Among the mourn-ers were colleagues from the electrical industry, Eskom, ZCC church members in their church regalia, local politicians and a Limpopo member of parlia-ment, Ms Merriam Ramadwa.

The master of ceremonies was the recently appointed Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela who left the mourners in stitches with his jokes.

Speaker after speaker spoke of the passion Muendeulu had for electricity and for his com-munity. Most of the early proj-ects in the former Venda were undertaken by Swuhana.

He is believed to have as-sisted eleven contractors in set-ting up their businesses; some

are flourishing and they are now big guns in the industry. Some of them also gave testimony during the service.

Swuhana was born in 1938 at Tshisikule, Miluwani. He attended school at Mphaphuli Memorial, but could not go far with his education. He worked for different companies in Brits and Pretoria before retuning home in 1960.

He was one of the first few people to be allowed to work as electricians in the former Venda government.

He also worked in several countries outside the borders of South Africa.

He is survived by three wives and 19 children.

ZCC pastors lead the Mkhukhu members carrying Swuhana’s casket.

Netshipale to lead Masisi Sanco branch

Huge manhunt for missing 11-year-old boy from Madombidzha

A new branch of the South Af-rican National Civics Organi-sation (Sanco) was officially launched at Masisi during a general meeting at the local taxi rank last Friday afternoon.

Mr Daniel Netshipale was elected chairperson and he will be assisted by Ms Moloko Tshi-taka.

The other members of the ex-ecutive committee are Mr Timtus Mbedzi (general secretary), Mr Matodzi Siwada (assistant gen-eral secretary), Ms Shonisani

Khoza (treasurer) and Mr Prince Tshaile (PRO).

The heads of the various de-partments are: Constance Ram-phabana, Rendani Manyaga, Lutendo Tshifhango, Khathu Mudalahothe, Joyce Netshiunda, Tsumbedzo Mbedzi, Ntodeni Netshipale, Livhuwani Rapha-sha, Alufheli Raphalalani and Sophiah Matshevhele.

According to Tshaile, the heads of the various departments will be allocated portfolios dur-ing a meeting that will be held

this weekend. He indicated that some of the things which are high on their priority list include the reduction of crime and the maintenance of roads in the area.

Mr Tshaile further revealed that the organisation will ensure that they construct a graveyard for the area soon. “It is pathetic to see that we are living in a township that does not have a graveyard,” he added. He stated that the poor supply of water in the area was still a problem to the residents.

The police at Madombidzha are continuing to look for the missing Theophilus Tshivhi, who had gone missing in January this year. He disappeared at Maname in Nzhelele and his family is waiting in vain.

It is alleged that traditional healers took him away, and several heal-ers were arrested for abducting the 11-year-old boy, but the case against them was withdrawn, due to a lack of evidence. The latest rumour among residents is that Theophilus was killed and his body thrown into the Mavhandu dam in the Madombidzha area.

Last Friday, police divers looked all over the dam but found nothing. Residents allege that one of the sus-pects was seen next to the dam two weeks ago, which made them suspect that the boy might have been thrown into the dam. The police, who were accompanied by members of the com-munity, searched everywhere, even in the nearby bushes, but could not fi nd the boy.

Although the boy was not found, residents as well as members of the family still believe that they will fi nd the boy. A prayer session was held last week to pray for the missing boy.

Samwu is happy that MM is leavingThe Makhado municipal manager’s contract is expiring today (Friday).

Members of the South African Municipal Work-ers Union (Samwu) say they are more than happy that Mr Shadrack Tshikalange is vacating the top position, because he had failed them.

The chairperson of Samwu at the municipality, Mr Elvis Tlou, said that he felt happy that the con-tract had expired, “because the man never changed anything at the municipality. Challenges that we faced before he joined the municipality remained unsolved,” he added.

He mentioned that Samwu believed that the Department of Cooperative Governance and Tra-ditional Affairs, in consultation with the political component, would send someone from “outside” the institution. “We do not want anyone of the directors to act in the position. We need somebody who is capable in the post,” said Tlou.

He alleges that Tshikalange practiced nepotism when making appointments. “There are internal workers who had gone for interviews, but even today they have not been appointed. When we asked him, he said he was still applying his mind. We do not know if he is still waiting for approval from his mind or not, because his contract has now expired,” added Tlou.

“If one does not have a relative working in the

By Peter Muthambi

Mr Shadrack Tshi-kalange.

municipality at top-management level, it is diffi cult for that person to be appointed, no matter how good you are in your job,” Tlou said.

He alleges that a relative of the mayor, Ms Elisa Ramaligela, had assaulted a co-worker and was never taken to a disciplinary hearing. “It was not the fi rst time. She also had an accident with a TLB, but nothing happened. She was never tested, but she still drives the front-end loader. She also vandalised graves with the TLB,” said Tlou.

“The municipal manager is an accounting offi cer, but Tshikalange never took any responsibility in his duties. He always told us that he would fi rst consult the mayor when taking desicions. Workers do not even have tools to work with. His contract must never be renewed,” said the deputy chairper-son of Samwu, Mr Kh-wathelani Murovhi. The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipal-ity, Mr Louis Bobodi, confirmed that Tshi-kalange had vacated the municipality’s top position. He also said that the position would soon be advertised.

The family said that they wanted the boy, dead or alive. The spokes-person for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Sgt Thilivhali Maloa, said that the police investigation was continuing. “Anyone with information in this regard must feel free to contact the police,” she said.

One of the suspects, Mr Johannes

Members of the police were photographed searching for the missing boy at Madombidzha last Friday.

The missing boy´s father, Takalanu Mabushe, stands next to the Mavhandu dam. Community members suspect that Theophilus might have been thrown into the dam by the sangomas.

Ramaremela, and his wife, Elizabeth, who is a traditional healer, have since been ex-pelled from the village. All the initial suspects have admitted to taking

the boy along to Maname, where they had gone to collect traditional herbs and plants. The community is still extremely angry and three weeks ago, Ramaremela’s house and a car were set alight.

The community still continues to hold meetings, despite the fact that the boy is nowhere to be found.

Huge interest in Madombidzha health walk

Various Easter services to be held

Ten special students enroll at MvelapandaWhen the whole country cel-ebrated Human Rights Day, the elderly and young people around the Sithumule/Ku-tama area participated in a health walk which started at the Sinthumule tribal coun-cil’s office at Tshiozwi and proceeded to Madombidzha .

The mayor of Makhado Munic ipal i ty , Cl l r Mav-hungu Lerule, Judge Joe Raulinga,Tshilwavhusiku Sta-tion Commissioner Lt-Col Freddy Shirinda, pastors and other dignitaries led the walk.

Dr Vincent Mpilo, organiser of the event, said that the main idea was to keep the people fit and teach them about health. He said that this was the sec-ond year that the walk took place and he was happy with the attendence. He said the elderly were a true example to the young people.

He commended them for

keeping themselves fit. “You are not only winding up time by walking,” he said. “You are keeping your bodies healthy and you must remember that a healthy body has a healthy mind. These elders in their golden years are shunning the stigma that goes with old age. Let’s do away with the idea that elders are supposed to sit at home, doing nothing until sun-set. Soccer was previously for young men because it needed someone with strength and power, but we are very proud of these old ladies because they have shown everyone that noth-ing is impossible.”

Shirinnda encouraged the women to continue playing soccer and to have active lives. “By maintaing an active life-style, you are a very good example to your children and grandchildren,” he said.

“They will hopefully follow

in your footsteps. At this age, you must focus on positive things, rather than worry about things that you cannot change. Although these ladies are of advanced age, what they are doing shows that they are still young in spirit. “

He also advised children to report any form of abuse, be it in the home or outside. He said children, and more especially girls, should not accept lifts from a person they do not know, and especially not without the knowledge of their parents as it might lead to rape.

He also said children should not walk alone, more specifi-cally in isolated places like near bushes. He said they should also not take a long journey alone and they should avoid walk-ing around during the night. Shirinda said whatever the youth chose to do to succeed in life, they should do their best.

A Vhembe-based college last Friday paraded 10 young peo-ple, who were taken from the streets with nothing to do but were now enrolled for different careers.

Mvelaphanda Development and Project10 will study free of charge because of their special circumstances. They did not ap-proach the college for admission.

One of the college’s directors, Mr Mike Mushaathama, said it was important that the new students be formally welcomed at the college. “Students should feel at home. They should know what is and what is not expected

of them, and we are here to do that,” he said.

Vhonani Mamphorogo, sec-tion community manager in the Vhembe district of the Depart-ment of Development and Social Development, who brought the students, said they were selected after the department had done community and household pro-filing. “Out of that we identified those with challenges and we identified Mvelaphanda as a partner to assist in training them,” she said.

The 10, who are mostly young women, were enrolled for careers such as plumbing, electricity,

auxillary health care, fashion de-sign, hospitality and mechanical engineering. “We feel that with these skills, some of the chal-lenges of poverty will go and they will go in a different direction,” said Mamphorogo.

The director of the school, Ms Tovhowani Ester Mashaathama, said she is assisting the 10 as a way of her institution’s social responsibility. She showed Lim-popo Mirror a 21-year-old man, Fhulufhelo Madula, who cannot talk, but who has been trained to make beds. “We cater for so many people, including those with challenges,” she said.

Elderly people from Tshififi participated in the health walk and also played soccer during Human Rights Day.

Six Beit Bridge men, among them two police offi cers, who were arrested for allegedly attempting to rob suspected copper smugglers of stolen cables worth US$18 000, have appeared in court.

The accused persons were arrested after a shoot-out with police, which resulted in one of them, Joshua Muzunwa, being shot dead.

Ogen Chiuka (32) and Koshesai Gweje (23), both police offi cers, Admit Nyam-hamba (35), Gracious Mahla (38), Runesu Manyange (36), and Austin Manyange (34), all of Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town, were not asked to plead to charges of attempted robbery and theft when they appeared before a local mag-istrate, Miss Gloria Takundwa.

The case was postponed to 4 April and the accused remain in custody.

The prosecutor, Mr Reason Mutimba, said that on 13 March, the two complain-ants, Tawanda Mapeta and Maria Tinago,

both of Harare, hired a haulage truck, so that it could ferry 1.8 tonnes of stolen copper from Harare to Beit Bridge, from where it would then be smuggled into South Africa. On arrival at Beit Bridge Border Post, the truck driver learnt that the truck would go through the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority’s scanners for exami-nation. He then got cold feet and notifi ed the owners. They hired three men to help facilitate smuggling the loot through an undesignated entry point along the Lim-popo River.

The truck driver and three men who were hired then drove to a bushy area along the Beit Bridge-Bulawayo road where they allegedly offl oaded the con-traband. The driver then drove back to Harare, on the understanding that the trio would smuggle the consignment into South Africa.

The accused persons allegedly got in-formation about the hidden copper through

one of the men assigned to smuggle out the loot and allegedly connived to go and steal it after having negotiated with a buyer identifi ed as Joice Moyo of Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town.

Mutimba further said that Nyamhamba, Mahla and Manyange drove to the area where the copper had been offloaded. They later informed Chiuka and Gweje in order to beef up their team and the two men arrived at the spot in a Toyota Corsa. The six men then hired a truck to transport the contraband.

When the group went to collect the cop-per cables, little did they know that police had already ambushed them after they had received a tip-off. The court heard that police fi red a warning shot. Chiuka, who was armed with a CZ pistol, returned fi re, resulting in an exchange of fi re during which Muzunwa was shot dead. The ac-cused persons were arrested and the stolen copper cables were recovered.

IDC opens new regional offi ce in Thohoyandou

Six suspected copper wire smugglers in Zim court

By Peter Muthambi

Killed in accidentA 22-year-old man died, after a car he was travelling in allegedly overturned and rolled several times before it eventually stopped. The incident happened at Hamusekwa Pfumembe in the Nzhelele area last Sunday.

Mr Mashudu Hangwani died at the scene of the accident. Six other people who were in the car and who were injured during the incident, were taken to Siloam Hospital for treatment. The spokesperson for the Mphephu police, W/O Lazarus Netshidzati, said that the police had opened a case of culpable homicide, following the incident. “It is not yet known what exactly had happened and we are busy conducting in-vestigations in this regard,” said Netshidzati.

Netshidzati said that the incident happened at 17:30. According to him, Hangwani’s body was taken to Tshilidzini Hospital for a postmortem.

The Independent Development Corpo-ration’s acting Limpopo regional man-ager, Mr David Mcgluwa, has urged the communities of Vhembe to make use of the nearly R100 billion put aside by the organisation for economic development.

The recent opening of the satellite offi ce in Vhembe was hailed as a major boost for the fight against unemploy-ment in the Vhembe District. The offi ce, situated in Thohoyandou, will give local people a chance to access money for their

businesses.Opening the offi ce in Thohoyandou for

the community of Vhembe, IDC regional manager in Limpopo David Mcgluwa said the IDC realised that it was diffi cult for the people of Vhembe to submit business plans in Polokwane. “We have put aside more than R100 billion over fi ve years, which is R20 billion per year and ap-plications are on a fi rst-come-fi rst-served basis,” said Mcgluwa.

He added that during the past six

months they had extended their footprint by opening satellite offi ces in Tzaneen and Groblersdal.

According to him, Vhembe is home to agriculture and tourism and the IDC will help to get many businesses off the ground.

Cllr Dorcus Mboyi, who represented the Vhembe District, expressed the hope that their partnership will be able “to give relief to our people in the district who are trapped in poverty.”

The Independent Development Corporation´s David McGluwa and Vhembe councillor Dorcas Mmboyi were all smiles during the launch of the IDC offi ce in Vhembe.

Members of the Thohoyandou Police acted on a tip-off on Monday and arrested a 19-year-old suspect at a fi lling station in Thohoyandou. The suspect, who was about to board a taxi, was found with four bags full of illegal cigarettes, believed to be of Zimbabwean origin. In the picture are some of the illegal cigarettes and the police offi cers who effected the arrest, Student Constable Mashudu Promise Magada (left) and W/O Avhashoni Calson Matshusa. Thohoyandou police spokeswoman Constable Avhafarei Tshiovhe warned would-be dealers to regard the Thohoyandou policing area as a no-go area as they will be arrested.

Beit Bridge man killed in cycle accident

Vhembe launches road safety campaign

A 49-year-old man from Guyu village outside Beit Bridge died after falling and hitting his head on a hard rock while cycling home, police have said.

The local police spokesperson, Sgt Loveness Mangena, said Rollet Ndlovu was cycling home with his friend, Tyson Dube, on Friday afternoon, along a dusty stretch at Guyu village.

They were coming from the local business centre, where they

drank some beer before heading home.

“After cycling for about 4km, they approached a bridge on a culvert, where Ndlovu’s foot slipped from one of the pedals. He lost control of the bicycle, thereby veering off the road and hitting a pillar. Ndlovu fell headlong and hit his head on a rock,” she said.

Ndlovu sustained a deep cut to the forehead and bled profusely.

He died on his way to a local clinic.

“As police we continue to warn people against alcohol abuse as this has undesirable repercus-sions. Inasmuch as we are say-ing people should not drink and drive, we also urge people to desist from cycling while drunk to avoid the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents in which lives are unnecessarily lost,” said Mangena.

Consignment of dagga found in GiyaniMembers of the police at Gi-yani have arrested a man believed to be a dagga dealer operating between Giyani, Malamulele and Thohoyan-dou .

Police acted on a tip-off from a member of the community and confiscated 11 bags of dagga in a vehicle in Giyani.

According to the police, an off-duty policeman received a call about the occupant of an expensive car that was loading suspicious-looking bags at Phaphadi village. The informer told the po-lice that the car had driven towards Giyani, about 35km away from the suspected dealing point. The police then acted on the hint and found the vehicle in the town. While searching the vehicle, eleven 50kg bags of dagga were found by the police. They then pro-ceeded to Phaphadi village, where the suspect stays, and confisicated six more 50kg bags and 16 “arms”

of dagga. The spokesperson for the Giyani Police, W/O Thomas Makhubele, said the dagga weighed 184.8kg and had an estimated street value of R850 000. It is alleged that the dagga was to be transported to various places around Thohoy-andou. Makhubele applauded the crime prevention team at the Giyani police station for their quick response. “I would also

like to thank the informer for his swift reaction. Let the public work hand in hand with police-men to stop crime in their areas. If you allow your neighbour to deal in drugs, it means you are not looking for a better future for your children,” said Makhubele

The 48-year-old suspect will soon appear in the Giyani Mag-istrate’s Court on a charge of dealing in dagga.

With the Easter season clos-ing in, the Vhembe District Municipality, in conjunction with various stakeholders such Road Safety Limpopo, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Mutale traffic officers, issued a warning to road users about the existence of stray ani-mals in Mutale’s Niani area.

In areas such as Shakadza, Muswodi, Tshiungani and Tshipise-Zwigodini outside Mutale, the donkey cart is an important means of transport for villagers and many ac-cidents happen as a result of stray animals along the roads. More than 70 donkey-cart owners in the Niani area recently received white belt reflectors and red flags as part as the 2012 Easter season safety campaign.

“We used to be involved in accidents with motor vehicles at the intersections of roads because we did not have white

reflectors. We are grateful to the district municipality for its efforts to promote safety on our roads,” said Mr Fanuel Rantsana of Muswodi-Dipeni. Rantsana is one of more than 70 donkey-cart owners who received safety tips, white reflector belts and red

flags to help promote safety on the roads.

The acting district executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Mi-hloti Ramoyada, urged people in Vhembe and visitors to the region to obey the laws and drive in a responsible manner.

Thovhele Azwihangwisi Rammbuda, acting Vhembe executive mayor, Clr Mihloti Ramoyada and the acting mayor of the Mutale local municipality, Clr Olga Netshisaulu, put white reflectors on a donkey.

EduPlant, the national programme that teaches teachers, pupils and communities how to grow their own food sustainably by using permaculture techniques, held six workshops free of charge in Limpopo between February and March 2012. The workshops were attended by nearly 900 representatives from 360 schools across the Limpopo. Teachers were taught permaculture gardening methods as a viable means of addressing food insecurity in their schools. The EduPlant programme is sponsored by Absa, Engen and The Woolworths Trust. Our photo provides a glimpse of the activities during the workshop at Lukwarani Primary School in Thohoyandou, held on March 1.

The Compensation Fund is set for a serious overall in the next few months. The aim of the exercise is to improve its effi ciency, if the board has its way.

This follows a presentation to dozens of stake-holders, ranging from business, organized labour and civil society organizations to government bodies during the Compensation Fund roadshow in Polokwane last Monday.

In his address, the fund’s commissioner, Shadrack Mkhoto, said the proposed changes would include partnerships with other institutions, such as the medical fraternity, amending legislation dealing with the management of the fund’s pension, improving the service delivery model, streamlin-

ing the fund’s functions to support its business, automating its capturing of claims and decentral-ising the functions of the fund.

“We are currently discussing a partnership with the South African Medical Association, asking them to provide us with medical tech-nology and advice to seamlessly interrogate, interpret and adjudicate the payment of claims," he said.

On the streamlining

of the processes, Mk-honto said there was a need to understand the employers properly in order know which premiums were to be levied. There was also a need to take another look at the way informa-tion was submitted by both the employers and medical service provid-ers, he added.

On decentralisa-tion, Mkhonto said that only those functions that were “low-risk to medium-risk” would be transferred to the prov-inces. These will in-clude the calculation of assessments, employer registration, reporting of accidents by employers, client services as well as adjudication of medical accounts. He said that head offi ce would only be responsible for policy making, compensation benefi ts and determin-ing premiums from year to year.

Serious overhaul for fund

Notorious cattle rustlers jailedThree notorious cattle rustlers, who were operating around the Beit Bridge district and were ar-rested during a recent anti-stock theft operation, have now been jailed for periods ranging from 20 to 40 years.

Cosmas Ncube (34) of Farm Number 81, Shape village, was con-victed by a local magistrate, Miss Sheila Nazombe, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of stock theft . He was sentenced to an effective 40 years. Miss Nazombe convicted Ncube of stealing 17 cattle from his neighbour.

Ncube was arrested on March 15 while moving the cattle from the Shape area to Montana Abattoir in Bulawayo. Mekia Sibanda of Guyu village outside Beit Bridge was convicted by the same magistrate of stealing 13 cattle in the neighbouring Makhado village.

In November last year, Sibanda teamed up with his two brothers, Moses and David, went to Makhado village and stole 13 cattle belonging to Rodgers Dube and drove them to

Filabusi. The trio sold three cattle there while ten others were hidden, but they were recovered by the po-lice during an anti-stock-theft opera-tion on 10 January this year. Sibanda was arrested on March 15 while driving another herd of 17 cattle that had been stolen from the Marula area in Plumtree and Lancaster Farm in Fort Rixon. The police recovered the stolen cattle.

Sibanda’s accomplices have since been convicted of the crimes and are awaiting sentencing. Obvious Nare of Shanyaugwe village was also jailed for 20 years by a local magis-trate, Mr Carrington Karidzagundi, for stealing four cattle in Zezani village outside Beit Bridge.

It was testifi ed that on 1 March this year, Nare, who was in the com-pany of three other suspects who are still at large, was spotted by villagers in Zezani while driving the stolen cattle from the area to Shanyaugwe.

The villagers raised alarm with the police, leading to Nare’s sub-sequent arrest and recovery of the cattle.

In the picture are, from left, Vho Khotsimunene Mphephu Ramabulana, Makhado Mayor Mavhungu Lerule, Komatiland´s Parmas Chetty and Joint Community Forum chairperson Dr Happy Ramakhanya.

Women clad in traditional attire (dzikhadzi) welcome Makhado mayor, Mavhungu Lerule, Vho Khotsimunene Vho David "Japan" Mphephu Ramabulana and other dignitaries on their arrival at the Mulelu Early Childhood Development Centre.

Komatiland presents projects to rural communitiesThe name Komatiland Forests has be-come synonymous with development in many rural communities.

Last year, the company handed over many projects to the Tshivhase cluster. Early this year, they handed a timber dormitory block to disadvantaged chil-dren at Hope of Nations centre at Muledane.

L a s t w e e k , t h e company crossed the Nzhelele River and handed over 16 proj-ects at Mulelu village, an area under Thovhele Mphephu Ramabulana.

In handing over the projects, Parmas Chetty, the company’s CEO, said they were work-ing with communities within which they were operating. “We have 11 compacts (agreements with communities) in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Kwazulu Natal, and we are excited to work with Thovhele Mphephu, who always thinks of his commu-nity. He always seeks for something that will empower his people,” he said.

He said they signed the social pact in 2009 and, since then, they had used an amount of nearly R3 million towards development in that area. “Over the years, we have achieved many things, but there are some projects which have not been com-pleted, like the water

project. We have been able to do more in the fi eld of technology as we feel that our students should not see computers for the fi rst time when they reach tertiary level,”

he said. Vho Khotsimunene David Ram-abulana represented Thovele Tony Ram-abulana and said he was excited to have Komatiland as a development partner.

Vho-Dorris Davhana finds peace of mind through singing gospel music.

"Music has now become the salt of my life. I sing to heal my heart and my fans. I cannot live without rhythms in my mind and tunes on my lips," says a widow from Ha-Rathidili in Madombidzha village.

Vho-Dorris Davhana became a widow in 1998 when her husband, Vho-Muyahavho Maboko, was killed. As if that was not enough, her husband's grave was dug up and his corpse was found to have gone missing under mysterious circumstances in the Gogobole cemetery.

“This has become a sore in my heart,” Vho-Dor-ris said when speaking to Limpopo Mirror about her struggle to come to terms with the disappearance of her husband's corpse. “All people might have forgotten what happened with my husband's body, but not my children and I. I fi nd courage to stay strong through singing gospel music.”

She said that she still needed answers from those responsible for stealing her husband's corpse from the graveyard. She also added that sangomas, men of the cloth and inyangas whom the community consulted said that Maboko's corpse had been exhumed and stolen by evil people. They added that the evil people wanted to use his fl esh for muti purposes, since Maboko had been a person living with albinism.

Vho-Dorris' fi rst album, aptly titled Shudufhad-za, was released in 2006. Her second one, Baxolele Nkosi, which means Oh Lord, forgive them, was released in 2009. Her fi rst and only DVD, Baxolele Nkosi, is doing well.

Davhana adds that she believes the person or people who exhumed her husband's body will one day receive the message contained in her songs and get to understand that life is not about acting sinis-terly. She says she feels that the police were quick in giving up investigation into the matter, even though a R10 000 reward was put up for anybody who could come forward with the information. “If people who stole my husband's body come forward today and tell us where they'd taken his corpse, then I can forgive them,” she said, and her words refer to the title of her second album, Baxolele Nkosi.

The Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi.

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has named the 10 districts in the country that have been identified for the pilot of the National Health In-surance (NHI) scheme, which will be phased in from 1 April 2012.

According to a report by BuaNews Online, the govern-ment's communication and infor-mation system, activities of the NHI pilot programme will focus on key elements such as district health services, service delivery, strengthening of health systems and health fi nancing. The dis-tricts are: Vhembe (Limpopo), OR Tambo (Eastern Cape), Gert Sibande (Mpumalanga), Pixley ka Seme (Northern Cape), Eden (Western Cape), Dr K Kaunda (North West), Thabo Mofutsan-

yane (Free State) and Tshwane (Gauteng).

Motsoaledi said the NHI pilot programme would focus on the most vulnerable sections of so-ciety across the country, "reduce high maternal and child mortal-ity through district-based health interventions, and strengthen the performance of the public health system in readiness for the full roll-out of (the) NHI". The pilot programme will further assess whether the health service pack-age, primary health care (PHC) teams and strengthened referral system will improve access to quality health services, par-ticularly in rural and previously disadvantaged areas of the coun-try.The objectives of the pilot programme include testing the ability of the districts to assume

greater responsibilities under the NHI, to assess utilisation pat-terns and costs and affordability of implementing a PHC service package. On fi nancing the pilot, Motsoaledi said it was part of the ongoing engagement between the department and the national treasury, which had allocated R1 billion for the project. He added that the department was ready for the roll-out of the pilot and would be visiting all the identifi ed dis-tricts. He will also hold a meeting with the medical practitioners from the districts, asking them to assist in the clinics for a few hours, where they will be getting paid for services rendered.

"We want to see the presence of doctors in the clinics in the furthest rural areas of the coun-try," he added.

Train hits woman

Thousands celebrate Mabunda Day

A 35-year-old Zim-babwean woman, be-lieved to be mentally ill, was struck fatally by a goods train, after she had thrown herself onto the railway line, police have said.

Sgt Loveness Mange-na said the incident oc-curred Friday at around 07:00 at the 265km peg along the Beit Bridge-Bulawayo Railway line. “It is suspected that Ms Annet Ndlovu, from Irisvale outside Beit Bridge, was mentally ill. She allegedly left her home and went to a nearby railway line where she waited for the train.

When the goods train approached, she threw herself onto the railway tracks, resulting in her being hit by the locomo-tive,” she said.

She sustained severe head injuries.

Thousands of community members, repre-sentatives of traditional leaders from as far as Mpumalanga and Kwazulu Natal and people from all walks of life gathered at Ngove outside Giyani on Saturday, for the annual Mabunda Heroes Day celebrations.

The day, on which the efforts by individuals in the community who have gone the extra mile in bet-tering the lives of others and bringing development in the area and also reviving culture are recognised, was held at the Ngove Royal offi ces on Saturday.

The gathering was addressed by the present incumbent, Chief Pheni Ngove V, and Coopera-tive Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Richard Baloyi.

Messages of support came from representa-tives of the different traditional houses and other institutions.

government. More than 200 young initiates were paraded before the crowd by the chief. The chief said it was to show that they were still upholding their culture and their determination to fi ght the scourge of HIV/Aids.

“To show our deter-mination in working with traditional leaders in the development of rural areas, we have set aside a month each to traditional leaders where we will visit them, and we have dedicated the month of March to the Mabunda Royal house,” Min Baloyi said. He added that they had de-termined key priority ar-eas, and service delivery and good governance formed the core.

Baloyi warned com-mun i t i e s who had lodged claims not to undermine their leaders and regard themselves as independents even before their claims were fi nalised. “We still have more than 2 000 land claims that are still to be fi nalised and already there is a tendency to undermine tradition-al leaders. People are abandoning their be-longing to traditional authorities. This is alien to us as Africans and it is not helping us at all,” he said.

Hundreds of church members under the auspices of the Tshivhase Pastor’s Forum and guests from around the country congregated on Wednesday (Human Rights Day) at the Tshivhase Secondary School for the annual Cross and Crown conference.

More than 300 churches from around the Tshivhase area come to pray under one roof during the month of March each year.

This year’s conference was different from others as they were also celebrating 10 years of active and fruitful service to the Tshivhase community and the whole province. The event was addressed by Vho Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, while Dr Maxwell Masakona gave the main sermon of the day.

The chairperson of the forum, Pastor Nkhangweleni Nemukula, said the cel-ebration was necessary. “From humble beginnings, we can today look back with pride and say we have made huge strides. We have achieved a lot during our 10 years of existence,” he added.

Nemukula said pastors became united

The Tshilwavhusiku police are searching for three criminals in connection with three charges of house robbery, car theft and the use of a fi rearm on 15 March at Ha-Ravele village in the Sinthu-mule area.

According to the police statement, three men wearing balaclavas forced their way into the house where work-ers, who are installing water pipes along the Sinthumule-Kutama road, are staying.

They had forced open the door with unknown instruments and fi red one shot in the air, at around 01:30. They demanded the keys of the blue Toyota, a mobile phone and money from the occupant, Mr Tshililo Ne-ngovhela. They then drove off in the Toyota, taking with them a generator that was used to operate the water tank.

In another case reported to the SAPS at Tshilwavhusiku, unknown persons arrived at a Rambau shop and knocked on the window at about 01:00, on 21 March, in Gogobole village.

When the shop operator, Mr Ah-mad Abdullah, came to investigate, he found a man pointing a gun at him through the window pane.

He was told to come over and open the door.

Mr Abdullah complied, since he feared to be shot dead, says the police statement.

On entering the shop, robbers forcefully took cigarettes, a mobile phone and R1 000 in cash.

A case of robbery and the pointing of a fi rearm has been opened at the Tshilwavhusiku police station, fol-lowing the incident.

The spokesperson for the Tshil-wavhusiku police, Sergeant Thilivhali Maloa, confi rmed the two cases.

“What is happening is very bad,” Sergeant Maloa said. “We appeal to members of the community to come forward with information relating to these cases. Criminals are out there, and running free in the streets, when their place is in jail. We need to know who these people are, so that we can arrest them.”

Water for thirsty Tshivhilwi residentsThe Calvary Christian Church in Lwamondo, which has been in the forefront of the struggle to empower communities for years, has been hailed for its generous work by the com-munity of Tshivhilwi-Tshidan-galani outside Thohoyandou.

On Friday, the church’s found-er, Dr Maxwell Masakona, ac-companied by senior members of the church, descended on the tiny village to hand over a borehole worth nearly R30 000 to the residents. This is the third borehole the church has given to communities.

“We felt we were doing well in terms of looking after the spiri-tual being, but at the same time,

we should also take care of the physical being,” said Masakona. He said as a church they had to preach a living gospel, a gospel that went with deeds.

“We cannot minister people who are thirsty. We do not want to give people any excuse that they were not able to come to God because they were thirsty. This is faith in practice, because faith without deeds is dead,” he said.

Masakona also asked com-munity leaders to identify a poor family for whom the church could build a house. On behalf of the community, local traditional leader Chief Robert Muonyolosi said he was excited and happy

that his people were getting clean water.

“Our people have been thirsty for a long time. We have tried many times to engage the govern-ment. We know many communi-ties have the same challenges we have here. With us, all this is now history as our people will have clean water,” he said.

L o c a l w a r d c o u n c i l l o r Tshimangadzo Malada said the church had bailed him out by providing water to the com-munity. “We can now walk tall, knowing that our people have water to drink. We are very thankful,” he said. He promised that the community would take care of the gift.

Members of the Zion Apostolic Old Mission Church held their annual conference for the congregations of Ngwenani, Duthuni, Tshimbupfe and Tshisaulu last weekend. During the event, the members also partook in Holy Communion.

New sports facilities for Tshiitwa School Musangwe, a weapon against crimeThe Tshiitwa Secondary School at Mashamba village, near Elim, opened its new R500 000 sports facilities and amenities on Friday. The fa-cilities include a soccer field, soccer and cricket kit, as well as recreational attire for the tshigombela dance troupe.

This comes after the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund board (NLDTF) funded the school to the tune of R500 000 in 2010, for use in developing sport facilities at the school.

The school had welcomed the funds and promised to use it well. Now, to show that the money was used purposefully, parents, the chief and other social stakeholders were invited to come and witness the handing

over of the sport facilities.“We are grateful to the Na-

tional Lottery Distribution Trust Fund for having funded our school in constructing a sport and recreation area,” said the principal, Vho-Alpheus Ra-musilei. “It shows that they be-lieve in developing our children into fully fledged sportspersons and creating healthy minds for learning. We’ve got 780 learn-ers and we’re able to take good care of them all.”

Thovhele Vho-Tshiitwa Mashamba, the Chief of Ha-Mashamba, handed over the sport amenities and facilities as traditional leader of the vil-lage. Glen Khoza, a pupil at the school, said that the dust had been clogging their throats as

they played soccer on the dusty fields. “As learners of Tshiitwa, we thank National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund for understanding that we needed sport materials for use during our leisure time,” Glen ac-knowledged. The school was established in 1982 by the for-mer principal, Vho-MS Mudau, and the chief. Before then, there was no school in the village.

Tshiitwa has proved to be a force to reckon with in the educational sphere, producing learners who went on to prove themselves at national universi-ties and colleges. As for 2011, they managed to produce an 84% pass rate, which is no small feat, said current principal Vho-Ramusilei.

R3000 fine for DiscoMusina United were fined R3 000 for assaul-ting the referee and causing the abandon-ment of their match against Muswodi Happy Fighters. They appeared before a disciplinary committee (DC) of Safa Vhembe last Friday.

The fine must be paid within 30 days. United’s veteran, Joel Goba, was also suspended for six matches for assaulting a match official. The current log leaders in Stream I, Mulodi Freedom Birds, received a R5 000 fine for fielding an unregistered player. R3 000 of the amount was suspended for two years and Birds also forfeited the league points to their opponents. Jerome River Bank received a R3 000 for failing to com-ply with the rules of the competition committee, while Nzhelele Young All Nation received a R3 000 fine for causing the abandonment of the match against Vhulaudzi United Brothers, forfeiting the league points to United Brothers. Shayandima Disco Five were fined R3 000 for causing the abandonment of the match against Iyarunga XI Smarties.

In the olden days, bare-knuckle fist fighting (musangwe) was a sport to test the strength and maturity of men. It was also used as a pastime while men were in the veld herding livestock.

The same sport has become a powerful tool today to fight crime in the community. One such community is the Matatshe-Makhuvha community. During weekends and holidays, all the boys of school-going age gather at a spot at the junction to Donald Fraser and Makonde.

During the recent Human Rights Day, Limpopo Mirror was part of the proceedings. The attendance was very high,

with spectators cheering from the first whistle till the last fight. A mbira player was moving around among the spec-tators, playing his cul-tural instrument. “This is to incite prospective fighters. It is used every time this type of fight takes place. This instru-ment revives the energy in a person and makes him ready for a fight,” said the man who was playing but did not want his name published.

The coordinator of the sport in the village, Mr Rampfumedzi Masikh-wa, a boxing trainer at the Thohoyandou Box-ing Club, said the idea of traditional boxing came about as a result of crime taking place in the area. “We all know that boys are naughty. If they do not have anything to do, they might turn to

some silly things that could land them in jail. To avoid this, we have to do something that can keep them busy. Musangwe is one of those activities that could do the trick,” he said.

As a boxing trainer himself, he says that the sport has become a launch pad for the village’s youths to launch their boxing careers.

“There is a lot of talent around here. The talent only needs to be nurtured and exposed, and so far we have been able to iden-tify some of them. We are busy training them to be future boxing champions,” he said.

Bishop Wilson Netshivhera, one of the organisers, said there

was more to musangwe than met the eye. “This is a sport that teaches respect among men. Boys are prepared for their future roles here and we are also ensuring that the sport and our culture do not fade away,” he said.

He said they would want to see the sport grow, but they did not have the resources to promote the sport. “This sport is loved by Africans. People in the cities like it, but they cannot afford to be here all the time. If we had the means, we would take this sport to the people even in far-away places,” he said.

The sport is run under strict supervision of the elders.

Elders who make sure that everything runs smoothly are Gerson Tshikovhi, Gilbert Netshirando, Asaph Thivhani, Richard Mashaba, Wilson Netshivhera and Rampfumedzi Masikhwa.

Feel it, it is here. Young men exchange blows during one of the fights.

Photogrpahed during the handing over of the NLDTF-funded sport utilities were (from left) Vho-MS Mudau (former principal at school), Glen Khoza, Thovhele Vho-Tshiitwa Mashamba, Vho-Alpheus Ramusilei (principal) and Lt-Col Noria Madavhu (station commander, Tshitale SAPS).

Nkhensani “Khadijah” Mogotsi recently rejoined the community radio station, Makhado FM. Khadijah hosts the Friday night party show Dziaswa from 20:00 until midnight and the Sunday show, Soothing Sounds. Many listeners are asking that she must host the breakfast show, the one she used to host before she left the station. The station manager, Mr Takalani Khomola, confirmed Khadijah´s return. He also confirmed the return of Khakhathi Tshisikule and Tshionyolosi.

The Tshigombela troupe of Tshiitwa Secondary School are exhilarated in their new uniform.

Gogobole Bucs beat the log leaders Basel give Mighty FC a soccer lesson

Kutama Easter Challenge draw

Gogobole Bucs beat the log leaders of the Limpopo Dairy league, Madombidzha Celt-ic, 1-0 in a tough match at Gogobole on Sunday.

Celtic’s killer striker, Mnini Mulaudzi, missed an easy op-portunity early in the match. As part of their strategy to dis-organise their opponents, Celtic displayed their dribbling skills in the middle of the park. Celtic missed another chance when Khuthadzo Kahrivhe’s header missed the target by inches.

Things turned against the team from Madombidzha shortly after Bucs introduced Rudzani Thagwana for Sinugo Sikhwivhilu.

Thagwana was a diffi cult man to contain. His fi rst touch on the ball ended with an attempt at goal, which saw the Celtic keeper,Takalani Ratombo, stretching to the limit to fi st the ball away.

Celtic later introduced Thabo Ramathlo for Masilo Moshuka. Lutendo Mabasa scored the only goal of the match.

He unleashed a volley that left

Madambi a fl abbergasted man. Celtic would have found an equaliser, but Thabo Ramathlo shot wide from close range in the dying minutes of the match.

Silas Rambona controls the ball with his head, while Lutendo Mabasa jumps high to kick it.

Mamu Community Sports De-velopment, which organises the Sinthumule Kutama Easter Soccer Challenge, is inviting managers of teams to attend the draw that will take place tomorrow.

The venue of the draw is Premjee &

Sons Cash and Carry and it will take place at 11:00 tomorrow (Saturday).

According to the public relations offi cer of the organisers, Mr Jafter Mamugudubi, the tournament will start on Good Friday (6/4).

Ndivhuwo Ntseku of United in full control of the high ball, while Calvin Sithole of Magezi challenges him from behind.

The fans of Rospa United left the Tshifulanani Stadium with sore hearts, after their team lost 2-3 to Magezi FC in their Vodacom Promotional League match on Sunday. See a full match report on page 21. In our photo, Thinandavha Mandiba of United (right) controls the ball, while Freddy Chauke of Magezi falls back after losing possession.

Fixtures

Red lightsThings are going from bad to worse in the Dynamos camp. They have been donating vital league points to their opponents both home and away in the past weeks. Their most recent disappointing result was a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Atlie FC last Sunday.

The University of Pretoria, or Amatuks, are still leading the pack, despite the fact that they dropped two points last weekend. They shared the spoils 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers. Amatuks, were further boosted by the fact that the other title challengers lost their matches during the weekend.

The th i rd-p laced Thanda Royal Zulu suf-fered a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Chippa United. Royal Zulu were con-trolling the game, while Chippa United relied mostly on counterat-tacks. Their three goals were scored by James Stemmers, Peter Dlam-ini and Eric Sewelele. Thanda Royal Zulu are now fi ve points behind Amatuks, following the poor results.

Vasco Da Gama are still battling to come to terms with last week-end’s game. They lost 2-3 to FC AK at the Eldorado Park Stadium in Johannesburg.

United FC are now out of the relegation zone. They beat Afri-can Warriors 4-2 at the Botshabelo Stadium. Carara Kicks beat Si-vutsa Stars 3-1 to ease their relegation woes. Bay United got some breathing space after beating Mpumalanga Black Aces 3-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

It was business as usual for the teams campaign-ing under the banner of the Vodacom Promo-tional League in the Limpopo Stream.

The Dolphins refused to die in their match against Winners Park at the Seshego Stadium. Winners Park scored an early goal via Raymond Seoka, but Dolphins never stopped fi ghting. They were duly rewarded by a goal late in the game. Nelson Seshoka found the net in the 78th minute to bring the full-time score to 1-1.

Modimolle Aces proved that they want to take part in the promotional play-off at the end of the season by beating Dinare FC 4-2 at the Ephraim Mohale Stadi-um in Modimolle. Aces are now closely contest-ing for the league title, following the result.

The unexpected hap-pened at the Tshifu-lanani S tadium on Sunday. Rospa Unit-ed, whose aim was to score an avalanche of goals against strug-gling Magezi FC, were shocked to the bone. Although they were the

fi rst to score, Rospa United lost the match 2-3. Mighty FC were the hardest hit. They were brutally walloped 0-5 by Basel FC. The one-sided match was played at the Seshego Stadium. As if they are not campaigning in the same league, Basel were by far the better side from the onset to the bitter end.

Nobela All Stars collected the maximum points at the expense of Phungo All Stars, whom they crushed 1-0 at the Louis Trichardt Eltivillas grounds. Baroka FC fought hard to earn a 1-0 vic-tory over Lephalale Young Killers at the Seleteng Stadium in Sekhukhune.

Guilty: Shalton Ndou.

Three Zimbabwean nationals, who had been terrorising the Waterpoort farming community by stealing copper cables in the area, were sent to prison in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Shalton Ndou (18) was sentenced to six years' imprisonment and Clever Siphuma (30) and Justice

Copper thieves sentenced

Moyo (28) were both sentenced to three years' imprisonment, after they had been found guilty of stealing copper cables at the Vlakte Plaats Farm in October last year. The three were arrested after they had been found in a possession of sto-len copper cables. The arrest was made after farmers had joined the police in the search for

the three in the area. The value of the cop-

per that was found in the possession of the three is estimated to be more than R22 000. Both Jus-tice and Clever were given an option of a fine amounting to R15 000, which they failed to pay. The spokesperson for the Waterpoort police, W/O Hezekiel Lishivha, said that he was happy about the sentence of the three. Magezi FC humiliate Rospa United

Benny’s ready for fi nal of schools KO

Try Again hammer Muduluni Young Chiefs

The fans of Rospa United left the Tshifulanani Stadium with sore hearts, after their team lost 2-3 to Magezi FC in their Vodacom Promotional League match on Sunday.

United squandered numerous scoring chances in the game. They should have scored at least four goals in the fi rst half. They managed to convert only one of their numerous chances. Their opening goal came in the 24th minute, when their slender strik-er, Mduduzi Skhakhane, hooked in the ball, following a square pass from Mashudu Mashapha.

The referee, Mr Martin Sivha-

da, warned David Maluleke of Magezi with a card, following a dangerous tackle on Mashudu Mashapha in the 29th minute.

Rospa United were leading 1-0 when the teams adjourned for half time, with the team continu-ing to dominate the proceedings in the last half.

As if the final whistle had already blown, they relaxed on the ball and continued to play like there was nothing at stake. Magezi gained momentum with time. They found the equaliser in the 64th minute. Lekgoana Laka headed home, following a neat pass from Moses Karabo.

The captain of Rospa United, Meshack Maphangule, was rep-rimanded with a card, following a continued argument with the referee. United committed sui-cide by replacing Mukhethwa Mukoma with Carson Chauke. They then conceded two goals in quick succession, with Noko Lekota and Karabo Selabe scor-ing for Magezi in the 69th and 74th minute respectively.

Although he came on as a sub-stitute, Carson Chauke was later replaced with Michael Moloto in the 78th minute. United scored their second goal via Mduduzi Skhakhane in the 86th minute.

The Vhembe-based Benny’s Care Soccer Academy aims to bring the South African Schools Knockout Competi-tion trophy back to Limpopo, when they participate in the semifinals in Pretoria today (Friday) and, hopefully, in the fi nals tomorrow.

The coach of Benny’s Care,

Mr Justice Matloga said they were going to play against Mahlodi High from Gauteng in the semifi nals.

“We are taking a team that is physically strong and tough,” said Matloga.

The match will be televised on Supersport 4 at 16:30 this afternoon. The players on whom

they will pin their hopes include Phophi Phophi, Rendani Mudau, Lesedi Katinga and Andrew Kabota.

The four schools in the semi-fi nals are Pabalelo from North-ern Cape, Rietville High from Northern Cape, Benny’s Care Soccer Academy from Limpopo and Mohlodi High from Gauteng.

Madombidzha Try Again ham-mered Muduluni Young Chiefs 6-1 in a Limpopo Dairy League match at Madombidzha on Sunday.

The homeside missed several opportunities in the first half.

The team of Benny´s Care Soccer Academy.

Takalani Nemutundi controls the ball. His opponent, Maloko Matumba, is running towards to try and intercept.

Naizel Letlalo made his presence felt in the eighth minute. He capi-talised on a handling mistake by the Chiefs keeper and blasted in a rocket from close range. Young Chiefs lost their original fi ghting spirit when their defender, Fulufhelo Ramahala, was cautioned with a card after a bad tackle on Maanda Maladzha.

Try Again continued to pressurise their op-ponents and Ndamulelo Mpilo defl ected the ball back into his own net while trying to clear Thifhulufheli Maemu’s square pass. After the goal, Try Again started playing as a team and were rewarded with a goal when Tebatso Duba scored easily. The score was 2-1 at half time.

The third goal for the hosts was scored by Rudzani Muregu in the 55th minute. Chiefs striker Tshivhidzo Ramaposa caused an upset when he hesitated for too long to unleash with only the stranded keeper to beat. Elvis

Tshiromba scored his team’s fourth goal after he beat the keeper, Madambi Ramavhoya, easily.

The fi fth and sixth goals of the day were scored by Lufuno Budzwa Awelani Nthulane.

Black Leopards are almost through to the next round of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup, after beat-ing Saint Eloi Lupopo FC 4-2 in their fi rst-leg match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Although most of the players who fea-tured in their match against Lupopo are not regular players, Leopards displayed enter-taining football throughout. It was in the sixth minute that they scored their opening goal. Their aggressive defender, Humphrey Khoza, was on target with a header, following a corner kick by Mah-latse Maake.

Leopards did not have enough time to cele-brate their goal. Their joy was cut short when the visitors from the Democratic Republic of Congo retaliated via Alexandra Oprica. He unleashed from outside the box. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line.

The home side were awarded another corner kick in the 29th min-ute. Humphrey Khoza headed home again to make it 2-1. Lupopo lost shape in the middle of the park and they were punished for that. Their keeper, Kabeya

Ntumba, mishandled the ball, following Davie Banda’s ground cutter. Joshua Obaje fi nished off the rebound.

Black Leopards replaced Edgar Manaka with Tiyani Mabunda in a bid to solidify their midfi eld. Mabunda combined well with Davie Banda and Thomas Madimba in their effort to neutralize the opponents. Thomas Madimba forced his way through the defence of Lupopo and scored easily

in the 78th minute. Saint Lupopo did not lose hope, despite

the fact that it was clear that Leopards were the victors.

They reduced the margin nine minutes before the fi nal whistle. Ijunga Nunganga released from outside the box and the Leopards’ keeper, Azwinndini Maphaha, palmed the ball into his own net while trying to clear.

Edgar Manaka of Leopards (left) and Breogan Pergiro of Lupopo wrestle to win the ball.
