Military Family
Appreciation Month begins!
November marks the annual
celebration of the Military
Family in which our country
gives tribute to the
commitment and sacrifices
made by the families of the nation’s service members. Lincoln Military Housing
would like to thank all our military families for your steadfast support as you have
faced the special challenges of long deployments, family separations, and frequent
relocations with great courage and resolve. Your selfless dedication, which has
directly contributed to the mission readiness of our service members, is a source of
inspiration and deep gratitude.
Did you know that Military Family Appreciation Month was established in 1993 by
the Armed Services YMCA? The U.S. Government has recognized the occasion every
year since. Thank you Armed Services YMCA!

Resident Reminders
Recycle your batteries! Did you know that your District Office has a battery recycling container? You can drop off your old batteries at the office during business hours and Lincoln will recycle them for you.
There are many types of batteries: alkaline batteries, rechargeable batteries, lithium, lithium ion, and zinc air batteries that can be recycled, including batteries from household items (cameras, cell phones, laptops, power tools, etc.). You can take dead alkaline and rechargeable batteries to the following businesses to recycle them: RadioShack, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes, or Staples. You may also visit www.call2recycle.org for other locations near you.
How to handle hazardous materials:
Take caution when using or storing products containing hazardous substances to prevent accidents from happening at home.
Never store hazardous products in food containers; keep them in their original containers and never remove labels. Corroding containers, however, require special handling. Call your local hazardous materials official or fire department for instructions.
Pesticides, herbicides, oil paints, paint cleaners, and oil and transmission fluids should never be flushed into a water system, disposed of on the ground, or put into household refuse.
Please remember that “Lincoln at Your Service” changes all outdoor and overhead light bulbs for your safety. You are responsible for personal fixtures such as lamps. If you see an outdoor light out, please call us!
Visit www.earth911.org to find local locations to recycle hazardous waste, batteries, etc. you can search by zip code.

This Month’s Living Green Tip: Batteries and Hazardous Chemicals
Energy Saving Tip: Would you like to lower your monthly energy usage? Keep this energy saving tip in mind: As you put your plan together to prepare for your holiday meal, think about efficiency in preparing your meal as well as your energy use. Did you know running an oven can cost up to .60 cents an hour? Turn off the stove or oven when not in use, close your fridge when you’re done using it, and open your windows to cool off the house instead of running fans or AC units.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut scrapbook paper into 6-inch wide strips, long enough to wrap around the tube. Use glue stick to cover the tube and
tuck the excess inside the tube. 2. Cut white card stock into strips (5½" x ¾") using the pattern provided. 3. Use glue stick to attach the card stock collar around the top of the tube. 4. Veterans Day Discounts Many restaurants in the Hampton Roads area offer Veterans Day Discounts and Free Meals for
the Service Member. Tips before heading out: Review the official site information and rules before heading out. Many websites are listing
previous years promotions that are no longer valid. Be sure to bring proof of military service, Military ID, or be in uniform. Proof of military
service varies by company. Pay attention to the dates on the Veterans Day offer. Many of the restaurant free meals are for dine in only and for a special menu. Many of these promotions include small print that says participating locations only.
Unfortunately individual franchisees may choose not to participate. Fortunately, some franchisee’s participate even if the corporate company does not.
Call ahead if you’re unsure about anything.
We found a couple of websites with listings of deals, be sure to share any you find on our Facebook page!

Maintenance Tip of the Month Now is the time to disconnect your
outside water hoses and put them away for the winter. If you leave them
connected, the outside spigot will freeze and break inside the wall causing
a water leak in your home.
