“You have cancer” is a phrase no one wants to hear. October is BreastCancer Awareness Month, and as I was researching this article, I wasoverwhelmed with statistics and facts about this horrible disease.

While these websites educate us, many are so chock-full of statisticsand facts that it can become very easy to lose sight of the human ele-ment and all the personal stories that have been created because ofbreast cancer.

Whether caught early or one that was diagnosed in a later stage, breast cancer is a fight that no one wants to endure, regardless of howshort it may be. From the diagnosis stage to treatment and into beingcancer-free, breast cancer patients need a positive attitude to survive.

Life’s unimaginable obstacles often reveal to us levels of innerstrength; strength that may have been dormant but that becomes

Laughter and a positive attitude will get us through a lot in life. When Aunt Daisy was diagnosed with breast cancer, she said,

“I’m going to live my life without fear of when I’m going to die.”

awakened when the need arises. When I started writingthis article on Breast Cancer Awareness month and readsome heartbreaking yet heartwarming, stories, I couldn’thelp but think about someone who had a life full of obsta-cles, including that of breast cancer.

My mother’s paternal Aunt Daisy was born in March1914, the seventh of 12 children. Coming into this world,Aunt Daisy already had several strikes against her. She wasborn prematurely and with a cleft palate. Aunt Daisy’sfather couldn’t accept her birth defect and never reallywanted her. A cleft palate at that time was frequently adeath sentence, but because of her mother’s devotion,Aunt Daisy was fed with an eye dropper when she was aninfant.

Each generation finds it difficult to imagine the hard-ships the previous generations endured. The 1920s weredifficult for so many people but imagine being a teenagegirl with a severe birth defect that caused speech andhearing problems, being part of a large family during The

Aunt Daisy was the seventh of 12 children. Here sheis (bottom right) with eight of her siblings and theirparents. She was born with a cleft palate and had adifficult childhood but learned to make the best ofevery situation. That attitude kept her strong whenshe was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Depression and then havingyour beloved mother die.

The internal armor that AuntDaisy had to build to withstandall that she had gone through inher first 15 years might havemade other people hard heart-ed. For her, it made her heartlarger and more giving, andsomewhere along the line, itnever dulled her sense ofhumor.

After their mother’s death, thechildren were shuffled fromfamily member to family mem-ber. Aunt Daisy eventually mar-ried and had five children of herown and became a “legend” inour family. Not just for whatshe’d gone through but for herantics and her outlook on life.Even in her 60s, she was knownto pack a bag, gas up her car,and drive across country to visitus, all on the spur of themoment.

I grew up 3,000 miles awayfrom this remarkable womanbut had the opportunity

through the years to know her.Aunt Daisy was strong, inde-pendent, spoke her mind, lovedfiercely and was one heck of acard player. If you spent anytime at all with Aunt Daisy, thenplaying cards was a require-ment.

In May 1995, breast cancerdecided it would invade thiswarrior who already had a life-time of battle scars and victo-

ries under her belt. She had amastectomy but the doctor saidthe cancer was so advancedthat chemo was not an option.Only radiation and anti-estro-gen pills were the treatment. Hestated that she would need tobe on the pills for five years ... ifshe survived.

Evidently the cancer and thedoctor did not know who theywere up against. After five years

of being cancer free, Aunt Daisyasked the doctor, “Can I quittaking these pills now?”

Knowing her, I’m sure sheasked this with a few choice

words added to show herdisdain for the regimen.

The cancer returnedand it was a num-

ber of yearsbefore manyof us knew.

In fact, three years after she wasdiagnosed the second time, shemade a trip out to California, stayed two weeks and none of

us caught on. After we found out that she

was going through treatment, Italked to her on the phone andshe said that no one wouldknow she had cancer if itweren’t for the fact that she waslosing her hair. Her “treatmentroutine” was to go for chemo, stop at a restaurant for a goodmeal, go home and sleep for anhour, and then take my Uncle

Wallace to church. I can only hope to have that

much energy in my 80s! Eventhe strongest, and the mostheroic, have to go sometimeand Aunt Daisy died in January2003.

With this being Breast CancerAwareness Month, it is a time toremember to do self-exams andhave mammograms.

However, it’s also a good timeto be grateful.

Grateful for those who havehelped cancer research moveforward; for those who are sur-vivors; for those who are care-givers; for those who are inspi-rations; and for all those AuntDaisies who have fought thefight.

When Aunt Daisy was firstdiagnosed with breast cancer, her attitude was, “I’m going tolive my life without fear of whenI’m going to die.”

She did all that and so muchmore.

With this being Breast Cancer AwarenessMonth, it is a time to remember to do self-exams and have mammograms. However, it’s also a good time to be grateful. Grateful for those who have helped cancerresearch move forward; for those who aresurvivors; for those who are caregivers; for those who are inspirations; and for all those Aunt Daisies who have fought the fight.

We’ve had summer weather for a while. When autumn weather comes, here are a couple of

comfort food recipes for you. There’s nothing betterthan walking into the house on a cool autumn dayand smelling your favorite comfort food on the stoveor in the oven.

Butternut squash wasn’t something I learned to likeuntil a few years ago but now I love it in just abouteverything.

Grilled, it’s an awesome addition to salads. Baked inthe oven, it’s a delicious alternative to sweet potatoesand its thick texture makes for a delicious soup.

DIRECTIONS:In a large saucepan, saute onions in margarine

until tender. Add squash, water, bouillon, marjo-ram, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Bring toboil; cook 20 minutes or until squash is tender.

Puree squash and cream cheese in a blender orfood processor in batches until smooth. Return tosaucepan and heat through. Do not allow to boil.Put into bowls and top with cranberries, croutonsand sour cream. Makes 6 servings.

INGREDIENTS:6 tablespoons chopped

onion4 tablespoons margarine6 cups peeled and cubed

butternut squash3 cups water4 cubes chicken bouillon1/2 teaspoon dried mar-

joram

1/4 teaspoon groundblack pepper

1/8 teaspoon groundcayenne pepper

This is the king of allcomfort foods - macaroniand cheese with bacon. What’s not to love?!

If you’re not a fan of the“blue boxed” variety, thentry making your own athome.

Putting it in the oven soit gets nice and crispy ontop is an added bonus. Ifyou don’t want it spicy, you can omit thejalapeño pepper.

What I love about thisrecipe is the smoky flavorthat the bacon adds andthe little bit of “bite” thatthe pepper adds. If youwant a little spice to it,but the jalapeño is toomuch, then you can addsome peppered Jackcheese.

However you make it,don’t forget the bacon.Your family will be thank-ing you!

DIRECTIONS:Cook macaroni, according to package directions; drain and

set aside.Meanwhile, in a Dutch oven, cook bacon over medium heat

until crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove to paper towels;drain, reserving 1 tablespoon drippings.

Saute jalapeno in reserved drippings. Add milk and cheesesto pan; cook and stir until blended. Stir in the onion powder, chili powder, salt, pepper and pepper sauce. Add the onions, cooked bacon and reserved pasta to pan; mix well.

Transfer to a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Cover andbake at 350° for 30 minutes. Uncover; bake 10 to 15 minuteslonger or until heated through. Yield: 16 servings (3/4 cup each).

INGREDIENTS:6 cups uncooked elbow maca-

Chocolate. It’s something that brings to mind

a different vision for each of us. Some of us love a good old-fash-

ioned chocolate bar or maybe a cup

of steaming hot chocolate on a coldwinter’s day. And what about apiece of your favorite chocolatedessert served up with a nice icecold glass of milk or cup of hot cof-fee?

If chocolate is one of your guiltypleasures, then you’re not going to

want to leave Lincoln on Oct. 11.Lincoln’s first Chocolate Lover’s Fes-tival was inspired by the ChocolateLover’s Festival that has been popu-lar in Fairfax, Va. since 1993.

According to Claire Luke, Fairfax’sfestival was created in an effort tobring visitors to Old Town Fairfax

Throughout the week, merchants around down-town Lincoln will partici-pate with contests, give-aways and tastes ofchocolate, so check inwith your favorite busi-ness to see what they haveplanned.

PHOTOS AND STORY BY DEBBIE BROWN

LINCOLN VIEW

The mark of a truly successfulevent is one that is met with passionand determination by the organizersas well as the participants. The thirdannual MudRun4Life on Oct. 18 hasbecome an annual event in Lincoln. With the current drought situationin California, it has taken extra effortand “thinking outside the box” so itcould take place this year.

Three Lincoln families each

endured a tragedy they never imag-ined.

Suicide. The Waterlyns, Whalens and

Aguilars each lost a son the summerof 2011. These families, who did notknow each other at the time of theirsons’ deaths, have now formed abond that will never be broken. While still mourning their sons, instead of turning their grief inward, they have chosen to bring suicide tothe forefront of the conversation, allin hopes that residents will learn

that it’s OK to seek help. This summer, many residents

were shocked when comic RobinWilliams ended his life. There are noeasy answers for family membersand friends. However, hopefully, bysuch a well known celebrity takinghis life, residents will realize that theonly way to deal with suicide is bytalking about it. Those who are con-templating suicide can no longerfeel alone. They must know that theyhave someone to talk to and thatthere is going to be a tomorrow.

“Even though the property thatwill be used for this year’s event issmaller, the route will still be a 5K,”said Kelly Waterlyn, whose son Jakeis one of the three young men whoinspired the event.

When asked how they dealt withthe drought issue in California,Waterlyn explained that this proper-ty already “has bodies of water on itso water wasn’t an issue.”

In addition to the actual event sitebeing a surprise, there is also goingto be a “color component” that

helps promote suicide awareness

Waterlyn didn’t disclose (itmight spoil all the fun).

For those who have attendedthe last two years, the “famous”slide is back but improved.

Participants are being shut-tled from 2000 Aviation Blvd. inLincoln to the property at anundisclosed location. Registra-tion begins at 2000 AviationBlvd. at 8 a.m. and the last shut-tle leaves promptly at 10 a.m.

According to MudRun4Life.org, you may arrive before 8a.m. to get in line for parking.

Beginning at 10 a.m., therewill be children’s activities suchas bounce houses and facepainting, vendor booths, foodand beverages.

Following will be this year’smotivational speaker, SamiKader from Roseville, whospeaks about his childhoodself-esteem journey.

The muddy fun begins at 11a.m. with the Waterlyns,Whalens and Aguilars startingthe race.

“As in years past, Gold Gym ispresenter of the event and the

main sponsor for this year is theLincoln Community Founda-tion,” Waterlyn said.

The money that has beenraised and will be raised thisyear will stay in Lincoln.

According to MudRun4Life.org, “Some programs we’vedonated to have been Charac-ter Combine for Lincoln HighSchool, a year-long character

building program beginning forthe 2013–2014 school year. Oth-er programs we’ve donated toinclude Point Break, as well asSoroptimists for teen girls, forself-esteem. Most recently,$7,000 was donated to a pro-gram for Lincoln High Schoolfor an amazing Peer Program. We are also working closelywith other community leaders

with a Suicide Task Force. A neworganization has been formedin our community – LincolnCommunity Resource Collabo-rative. Saving lives, making adifference.”

Just as life is full of sadnessand smiles, so is MudRun4Life.The reason it originated isheartbreaking but the smilescome about when the families

learn of lives that have beensaved because of awarenessfrom this event.

Although doused in mud, thesmiles are also readily apparentas participants slip and slide inthe mud, and extend a hand tohelp their friends and familymembers. Just as in life, it’stough to get by without a handup from those who care.

Teams of all sizes take part in Mud-Run-4-Life and have a great time on the 5K course. None of the participants come out clean!

Native plants are a colorful sight on hillsides and along

canyon trails. They’re alsoa great choice for thehome garden.

October is the best timeto plant them, RedbudChapter of the CaliforniaNative Plant Society mem-ber Julie Becker said.

“It’s a good time for theroots to take hold,” shesaid. “The (plants are) put-

ting their strength into set-ting their roots instead ofproducing beautiful flow-ers. You’ll get more beauti-ful flowers if the roots aregrounded well in the fall. They can’t do it when it is90 degrees day after day.”

Becker has enjoyed delv-ing into the world of Cali-fornia native plants sinceshe moved to this area fromVermont in 2005. For her, there are many standouts.

“My absolute favorite isfoothill penstemon,” she

said. “It has purple iridescent blossomsand almost a tubular look — two flowerlobes on top and three on the bottom. The colors seem to shimmer in the sun.… It’s mainly dark lavender purple butyou will see some darker purple shades. They spread and they will be bloomingfor about six weeks.”

The foothill variety of penstemonblooms in May and into June, with linger-ing blossoms up to two months. And,each year the plant will grow a little wider.

“ If it is happy in its environment, it willform a cluster,” Becker said.

Another favorite that does well in hergarden is Cleveland sage, which bloomsJune, July and into August. Its gray greensoft leaves are very fragrant.

“The flowers grow up the stem, but theyare spaced up the stem so they alwaysremind me of pagodas,” she said. “...Theflowers are stunning to look at. They staythere for a while. When they dry, whichthey have now, they still look pretty as anice decoration in the garden. … Some-times I’ll leave the dried-out flowers eveninto the winter.”

Cleveland sage is a very hardy plant thatdoes exceptionally well during drought, she added.

Western blue flax is another near thetop of her list.

“They have the most beautiful shade ofblue — it’s like beautiful blue eyes,” Beckersaid. “You can’t believe there could be thatblue. They have five petals on them. Theywill bloom for quite a while. … They staypretty nice even when there aren’t bloomsbecause there’s nice foliage. What’s funnyabout them is they like to bloom in sun-light. You go out in the morning and they’llbe greeting you. But if you go out in theafternoon, they’ll be closed up.”

Western blue flax will reseed.“I planted it in two different spaces in

flower beds and they spread all over thespace. They have thin, soft, needle-likefoliage that’s a blue green. It kind of lookslike they are dancing. …

“The foliage is quite pretty. We have tothink about foliage when we are thinkingof garden design because you are going tohave foliage more than you are going tohave blooms. At the end of summer, (theplant) gets teeny round seed pods andeven the seed pods look nice.”

Then there’s the matilija poppy“It’s like a big shrub. They really get big,”

Becker said. “It is a focal point of one of mybig flower beds because it gives height. The stems are like reeds. They produceflowers that look like fried eggs. When it isblooming you cannot believe it. You have

these huge flowers —white with yellow in thecenter. They must be 4-inches across.

“You don’t want every-thing the same height inthe garden. Just like youdon’t want straight lines. You also want differencesin height. That’s why I likethe matilija poppy, It is justa centerpiece and it isabsolutely splendid.”

Another thing to keep inmind about the matilijapoppy is that it can be bothhardy and finicky.

“If it likes the place it’splanted, it will burst forthin growth. If it does not likewhere it’s planted, it willdie very quickly,” she said.

One of her favoriteshrubs is the toyon, whichproduces red berries in thewinter.

“Here’s a case where Idon’t buy this shrub for justthe flowers,” Becker said. “Ibuy it because it is nice tohave it as a backdrop. It hasbeautiful shiny leaves.”

Even in the heat of sum-mer, the leaves remain ashiny green rather thanturning brown. The redberries it produces in win-ter have earned it the nick-name of Christmas berry,Becker said.

The apricot monkeyflower is another stunner.

“They can grow into littleshrubs once they get estab-lished,” Becker said. “Theyhave thin, narrow brightglossy green leaves. ... Theyhave a beautiful apricot orpeaches-and-cream color.Once they start blooming, they last for at least sixweeks. The only problemwith monkey flowers isthey are kind of sad at theend of summer.”

A good place to spot theearly summer bloomers isin the Yuba River canyon

on the hillsides of Highway49. Becker has also seenthem along the ButtermilkBend Trail in the SouthYuba River State Park, shesaid.

Her list of favorites alsoincludes California fuchsia.

“There are several typesof California Fuchsia. Ihave the ground covervariety,” Becker said in anemail. “Blue gray leavesform a carpet underneathmy Matilija Poppy. I had alittle trouble early on get-ting these to grow. But nowthat they're establishedthey've grown togetherinto a mat. They’re durableplants that can stand highheat. They demand verylittle water and come earlyfall, they reward gardenerswith their bright scarlettubular flowers.”

Because they are adapt-ed to the California envi-ronment, native plantsneed minimal care,

“I only water once aweek,” Becker said. I’veheard of people wateringless than that.”

For feeding she suggestscompost or compost tea.

“It’s like a brewed tea andyou can spray it on them,”she said. “You can spray iton the ground or right onthe leaves as a foliar spray.”
