Important information

This manual covers the installation and handling of the Lindab SolarRoof. Read through the manual carefully so as to ensure correct and safe installation. Remember that the electrical installation must be performed or approved by a qualified electrician and that the solar cell modules will begin to generate electricity as soon as they are exposed to sunlight. For this reason, avoid coming into contact with the connections except when they are being connected to each other.

NB! Avoid sharp objects coming into contact with the solar panels. This could cause damage to the panel and lead to a short circuit.

The surface of the solar cell modules is resistant to precipita-tion, UV light and high pressure as long as this is only for short periods. In practice, this means that you can walk on the panels. On the other hand, sharp objects coming into contact with the solar cells should be avoided so place a soft support to protect the solar cells during work or servicing that requires putting a load on the modules.

Concentrated sunlight, using, for example, a magnifying glass, could damage the panel and must be avoided.

Always perform a visual inspection of the solar panels during installation. If you discover a defective panel, contact your retailer and avoid coming into contact with the panel as it could be live!

The solar cells cannot be switched off. In order to ensure that they are not generating current, cover the solar cells so no sunlight reaches the solar cells.

The solar cells cannot be repaired and the module must be replaced if the solar cells are defective.

Important information

GlossaryIn order to create an understanding and facilitate the installation of the Lindab SolarRoof, there is a table of common words, abbreviations and terms that are used.

CIGS - CIGS stands for Copper Indium Gallium Selenide and is one of the solar cell technologies that are called thin film in common speech. This technology is different from traditional modules, which are often silicon based. The biggest difference is that it is significantly thinner and requires less energy during production.Kilowatt (kW) - Kilowatt is usually abbreviated to kW and is a measure of output, i.e., how much energy is converted during a unit of time. You have perhaps seen that electronic devices show how great an output they have? In order to calculate how much energy they use, you multiply the output of the device by the time you use it. A microwave oven with an output of 1 kW that is used for half an hour consumes 1 kW * 0.5 hours (h) = 0.5 kWh.Kilowatt peak (kWp) - The peak output of a solar cell system is often expressed as kWp (kilowatt peak) or KWt (kilowatt top output) and is the total of the rated output of all solar cell modules included in the system. The true maximum output the system will supply is often less than the peak output.Kilowatt hour - Kilowatt hours, or kWh as it is abbreviated, is a measurement of energy. One kilowatt hour is sufficient to, for example, charge a mobile phone for 200 hours or use a coffee machine for around an hour and fifteen minutes.String - A string is where we connect several solar modules in series or optimise them. In smaller systems, we have one string and, in larger ones, we have several strings so that the voltage in the cables is not too great.MPPT - Maximum power point tracking is a function in the inverter or optimiser where it is ensured that the solar module always works at the maximum output. Since the solar modules do not always produce a constant voltage or current, this point must be constantly adjusted.Inverter -The electricity generated by solar cells is direct cur-rent. In order to be able to connect the solar cell system to the electricity grid and use the electricity in a building, an inverter is required to convert the direct current to alternating current.Optimiser – An optimiser is a DC/DC converter that controls and monitors at module level by regulating the MPPT on each individual module (or each pair). This is at the same time as acting as a switch.

RecyclingThe waste packaging should be sorted and sent to the nearest recycling centre. Remember that, when the product has served its time, it must not be thrown away with ordinary household waste and must be sent to the municipal recycling centre. Incorrectly managing waste from the product could be contrary to current legislation.

About the Lindab SolarRoof

What is the Lindab SolarRoof?The Lindab SolarRoof is a CE marked a building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) based on CIGS technology.

The modules are delivered integrated in the roofing sheet. This means that when the roofing sheet is installed, the solar cells are also installed. The additional elements are connec-tion of quick connectors, installation of optimisers and installation of inverters.

Prerequisites and design criteriaIn order for the Lindab SolarRoof to work effectively, it is necessary to perform a drawing of the roof surface with all obstacles and transitions included in the drawing. This means that the solar panels can be drawn in correctly and, at the same time, a realistic calculation and dimensioning can be achieved.

The Lindab SolarRoof employs CIGS technology, which provides high energy production, even in less optimal conditions, and can be installed in roof pitches and directions that are traditionally avoided. This leads to a more flexible and adaptable solution.

The Lindab SolarRoof is based on a solution with solar cells glued directly onto roofing sheets that are then installed as building-integrated solar panels. These modules are then connected to optimisers that control the modules and ensure that they produce at the highest capacity possible at all times. This is done through each optimiser having an individual MPPT (Maximum power point tracker). Each optimiser also provides the ability to monitor the modules and can also be shut down, providing superior safety.

In order to maximise the production of the Lindab SolarRoof, all shade should be avoided as far as possible. The opti-misers allow individual modules in a string to be in shade for shorter periods, however, as these are flexible and do not affect production from the other modules.

If one solar module is affected, the production from the rest of the solar modules in the string is reduced. This example with crystalline solar cells.

Roles during the construction process

For the craftsmanAs a craftsman, you are responsible for the installation of the solar panels, where it is important to bear in mind the following:• Avoid sharp objects coming into contact with the solar

cells.• Do not load the modules more than is necessary.• Check the laying diagram so that the correct panels are

installed in the correct place.• Bear also in mind that there may be start and end pieces

and that these must be installed in the right place.• Avoid contacts and cables getting jammed.• Always carry out an inspection of the solar panels prior to

installation and handle the panels with care.• Avoid chafing the panels against other objects.• Read about how the panels are installed and how the

accessories for securing optimisers are installed prior to installation.

• If the optimisers are installed in connection with the solar panels, do not forget to read through the section on QR codes and the layout plan.

There is a checklist for correct assembly at the end of this manual that ensures that each element is performed correctly and provides for safe and secure installation. In practice, the solar panels are installed in the same way as ordinary roofing sheets (SRP/LSP) but with the addition that there are two cables connected together by an electrician or craftsman, which are covered by the electrical installation company’s own series of checks.

NB!• It is important to avoid moisture in the contacts. When

wet, the contacts must be strapped into each other or plugged.

• The optimisers require good ventilation and the tempera-ture should not exceed 85 C in the area of the optimisers.

• There must be no pinching or screwing anywhere in the solar cell modules.

For the electrical installerAs electrician, you are responsible for installation and connection of solar panels, optimisers and inverters. If anyone else performs the installation, the persons performing the work are covered by the electrical installation company’s own series of checks.

As electrician, it is important to bear in mind the following:• Always work in accordance with good electrical safety

technology practices.• Avoid leaving open connections outside in moist condi-

tions. This could then lead to the moisture being shut in once two contacts are connected.

• Do not load the modules more than is necessary; try to use a soft sheeting to distribute the force when loading.

• Always perform a visual inspection of solar cells, opti-misers and inverters before installation.

• Bear in mind that the solar cells will generate current as soon as there is sunlight outside.

• Avoid disconnecting contacts that are already connected at the same time as the solar panels are exposed to sunlight.

• Always ensure that the installation is performed correctly and that all components are properly secured and no sharp surfaces are lying and causing chafing.

• Plan the layout of the cabling and avoid transitions and screws that could jeopardise the impenetrability of the roof.

• Bear in mind that cables must not be lying loose on the roof and must be installed in a flexible tube and installed in a cable bar, under a bracket or through a clamp.

NB!• In order to ensure correct installation, there is a self-in-

spection form on pages 45-48 that should be completed when the installation work is under way. The self inspec-tion form contains specific headings to generate safety for everyone involved.

Roles during the construction process

For the end customerAs the end customer, you are responsible for providing correct information and conditions for safe and correct installation. Bear in mind that the work must be performed by qualified professionals.

It is important to bear in mind the following before installation commences:• Once the quotation has been approved you, together

with the electrician, should contact the grid owner and send the following documents, which are provided digitally by Lindab: a. A pre-registration b. An application for Micro Production c. Installation drawings - (wiring diagram) for the system d. Product data sheet

• When the grid owner has approved the documentation, an installation authorisation is sent to the electrician and a confirmation to you as the end customer.

• The grid company will contact you as the end customer to replace the electricity meter free of charge so that it can measure the surplus you wish to sell.

• In order for the electricity trading company to be able to buy the surplus electricity, an agreement must be signed. Compare and contact your electricity trading company (electricity company).

• A completion report is sent in by the electrician and an inspection may be requested by the grid owner.

• The solar cell grant can be applied for as soon as the quotation is received. The invoice is then sent to the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning before the grant is approved.

NB!• Before commissioning, the attached checklist on page 41

must be completed. The checklist ensures that the system has been installed in accordance with the instructions, and fulfils all safety and function require-ments.

Delivery and handling

Solar panels must be handled with care as it is important that the panels are not subject to any mechanical impact or blows. When lifting, it is important that the solar panels are not subjected to a load and are lifted by means of the accompanying packaging or through a load distributor. It is particularly important that the connection box and cables/contacts glued to the solar panels do not become pinched or subjected to impacts.

The content of each delivery must be in accordance with the order confirmation. When installing in a manner other than that prescribed by Lindab, additions may need to be carried out. In this case, contact your retailer.

Electrical installation

Setup and layoutIn order to achieve correct installation, Lindab recommends following the layout attached to the order confirmation. The layout and any comments in the order confirmation ensure that the correct number of optimisers are connected in a string.

Bear in mind that there may be a start and end piece that is suitable for details such as barge boards. It is important that these are installed correctly so that unnecessary shade is avoided.

Before you startBefore starting work, read the installa-tion instructions in their entirety to get an idea of which items need to be im-plemented on your particular roof and in what order these should be done. The Lindab SRP must be installed on an impermeable subroof and fitted di-rectly to a level substrate or battened roof.

Fixing instructions apply to buildings with a total height of a maximum of 16 metres and that are not located along beaches, bare mountains or distinctly flat landscapes. You can find out more about fixing in coastal areas in the fixing chapter. In unobstructed roof areas, installation is very easy. If the roof has a lot of obstacles or cupolas, the work required will be much more in-volved.

Lindab is a turnkey supplier of roofing systems and roofing products and, in addition to metal roofing, can also sup-ply you with roof drainage systems, transitions, roof bridges, snow fences and roof ladders.

Opening the boxStart by checking that your order is complete and that all items on the bill have been supplied. Then review the products and ensure that nothing has been damaged during shipping. If you find that damage has occurred during shipping, you must immediately report this.

Lindab is not responsible for costs in-curred replacing products installed us-ing a method other than the one shown in these installation instructions.

Unloading of goodsBefore the roofing sheets are lifted off, wooden blocks must be placed on the ground at a distance of one metre be-tween them unless the goods are deliv-ered in Lindab’s original packaging. The sheets can be stored outside on the condition that they are installed within a month. Otherwise, they should be stored under cover out of the rain.

Safe workingBe careful with the sheets’ sharp edges. Always wear protective gloves and clothing. Use a safety line and soft-soled footwear when working on the roof. All existing safety regulations must be ob-served while working with the Lindab SRP.

Roof substrateMake sure the substrate is in good con-dition before installing your new roof. The roof profile should be fitted on an impermeable substrate with a roof slope of more than 12°. If the profile is laid on a batten this must be of a width of at least 50 mm and the distance between them must be a maximum of 300 mm.

Plan layoutPlan the layout as optimally as possi-ble so that there is room for all sheets. Also plan so that there is space for all cabling.

Chimney and transitionsFittings around the chimney should be made by a metalworker to ensure a tight and good-looking installation.

TransitionsLindab has a range of ready to use products to create different types of transition on the roof surface. Ensure that these end up in an unobstructed sheeting field and are not ”interrupted” by any joint where possible.

Roof maintenanceThe roof is for the most part kept clean and free of dirt by it being washed by the rain. Leaves and twigs may become trapped in the nooks and should be cleaned out annually. If the roof needs to be washed, the best way is to use a soft brush and warm water. High-pressure washing can be performed on the con-dition that too high a pressure is not ap-plied.

All damages beyond the outer layer should be immediately painted using touch-up paint on the damaged area.

Design of the workplaceA worktable, as in the image, will simpli-fy the cutting work and other process-ing of the sheet components. A stud (45x95) with a length of 495 mm is to be fixed to both ends of the worktable. They are used to place the sheet across when working with folds etc. Ensure there is lots of space beside the workta-ble for the long roof sheets.

Fit and cuttingIf the sheet needs to be cut, use a pair of snips or a circular saw with a blade designed for thin sheet metal. Never use an angle grinder since the sheet will then have large scarred surfaces and chips will form that could get stuck in the sur-face coating and rust. In the instructions that follow, snips are used for cutting. Remember to use both left and right-sid-ed snips to achieve the best results.

Installation drawingAlways commence installation from the right-hand edge of the roof. For aesthetic reasons, an assessment should be performed as to whether the first sheet needs to be cut longitu-dinally in order to achieve the same width on the last sheet as the first one.

Or the location of transitions can gov-ern how the first sheet is cut. Having transitions through the joints is to be avoided.

FixingIt is important to use the correct fix-ings for all sheet-metal structures. When you use the fixings from Lindab, you can be sure that they are de-signed for the purpose and safe to use.

For the Lindab SRP, three different screws are used. Screw D14K is used for fixing fittings to steel, e.g., in over-laps. Screw A13K is used for fixing fit-tings to a wooden substrate.

Screw V154 is used for fixing along the left-hand joint, against the roof substrate and for installation of the eave flashing. The screws are positioned centrically in the oval holes. The screws are posi-tioned at 300 mm centres along the edges of the roof and 600 mm centres elsewhere. In coastal areas, the screw must be positioned at 300 mm centres across the entire roof. The edge of the roof is counted as the area from the edge and 1.5 metres into the roof.(when fixing to 17 mm tongued and grooved board, the screws are placed at 300 mm centres on the entire roof surface)

Preparations for installation

ToolsTo install the roof, you will need the following tools.

Tape measure Work gloves and shoes with soft soles Safety line or safety harness (there are many different models)

Installation –

Make sure that the flashing is placed in a straight line along the edge of the roof. Screw in a zig-zag pattern, leaving 300 mm between attachment points. Use screw V154.

Lay the protective substrate of the roof in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Cover eave flashing bolts.

When installing on battens, a polyethylene fabric, PD4 95 must cover the screws. See dimensions of and distance between battens on page 27.

Preparations - Eave flashing

When laying battens, place a polyethylene fabric, PD4 95, centrically under each sheet from the batten next to the first to the one next to the last.

Splicing of eave flashing is carried out with 100 mm overlap.

When installing the eave flashing, lay a strip of roofing felt under the flashing. The eave flashing should overlap the trailing edge of the gutter.

The first sheet laid at the very right of the roof will probably need to be cut longitudinally in order to get en even measurement with the final sheet. Be precise when calculating the first and final sheets.

Before the first sheet is laid on site, the longitudinally cut edge must be folded up 25 mm.

Lay the first sheet and push up towards the eave flashing.

Secure the sheet with a screw so that adjustment will be simple.

NB! The sheets are supplied with a fold.

Adjust the sheet so that it is absolutely perpendicular to the eave flashing.

Install fixing sheet at 600 mm centres.Use screw V154.

Continuation eave flashing 2 with solar modules

Place the sheet across the joint of the previous sheet and press the lower edge a little.

Bring up the sheet’s fold edge towards the eave flashing.

Click into the joint along the entire length of the sheet. Use a rubber mallet. Secure with a screw along left joint.

Preparations - valley flashing

Place the valley flashing in the roof valley and mark the area to be cut away. Ensure there is 25 mm available for cutting in order to be able to fold the edge around the eave flashing.

When laying on battens, the valley must be built up to the same height as the top edge batten on the rest of the roof.

Make a cutting for the fold edge at the bottom of the valley flashing.

Fold the fixing sheet across the edge. These will be the valley flashing’s fixing points in the roof.

Place the valley flashing in the valley and secure by screwing through the fixing sheet.

Fold the valley flashing at the lower edge of the eave flashing.

Fix the fixing sheet by hammering down the edge of the valley.

Use snips to cut out the roof corner.

Installation – Lindab SolarRoof with SRP

Remember to install the sheet correctly. The arrow on the back must point downwards.

For valleys longer than 2000 mm, use profiles with an overlap of at least 200 mm. Apply sealant to the overlap.

Place the fixing sheets C2SRP along the turned up edges of the valley on both sides. Use fixing sheet at 300 mm centres along the edge.

Measure the angle by making a template from wooden studs.

First cut the sheet joint.

Prise down the joint cutting and cut the angle towards the joint.

Be sure to create fold edges in the bottom section.

Place the sheet in the valley and put the fold edges around the eave flashing and the fixing sheet for the valley.

Place the angle template on the sheet and mark out. Remember the 25 mm cutting area for the fold edge.

Use the angle template again to mark out the angle. Remember the 25 mm cutting area for the fold edge.

Place the sheet on the roof an mark out where it needs to be cut at the bottom edge.

Cut the joint. Fold down the cutting for access when cutting the sheet.

Lay the roofing sheet by pushing the fold edge under the fixing sheet. Secure with screws along the left-hand joint.

Cover with temporary roofing sheet to the left of the valley. Start with a whole sheet at the far left and ensure that it is straight against the eave flashing. Then cover from the valley. Remove the temporary roofing sheet.

To make things easier, left and right snips can be used to cut the level part of the joints.

NB! If a solar panel is being installed, the sheet should only be cut at the bottom edge.

Fold the bottom edge of the sheet.

Cut the sheet across-ways.

Cut out the roofing sheet to the shape of the dormer. Remember to fold a 25 mm high edge upwards along the cutting edge.

Lay a string of sealant at the top to prevent water penetrating between eave flashing and valley.

Fix fixing sheets using the same principal as described in the work on preparations for valleys.

Lay a bead of sealant at the top of the valley to prevent water penetrating.

Cover with roofing sheet above the dormer using the same principle as described in work on covering valleys.

Place the sheet at the dormer and ensure that the bottom edge’s fold goes round the eave flashing.

Covering a dormer

Lay the dormer valley and ensure that the bottom edge is folded around the dormer eave flashing and the upper edge folded around the ridge.

Be sure to get an overlap on the sheet at the bottom of the dormer. Cut 100 mm of the lower joint to get a safe overlap. Open the upper sheet joint a little before putting the sheet in place.

Overlap

If the roof length is longer than the roofing sheets, an overlap is needed. Be sure to place the overlap with an offset between the joints. Begin by cutting away 100 mm of the bottom part of the upper joint.

Pinch the cut edge of the joint so that the upper sheet can connect well.

Place sealing tape on the lower sheet. Fix the fixing sheet C2SRP. Let it cover the entire width between the joints. Fix with three screws, V154, through the fixing sheet and the underlying rubber moulding.

Put the sealant at the joint between fixing sheet and the joints to prevent water penetrating into the overlap.

Lay the upper sheet and ensure that the sheet’s fold goes round the fixing sheet and that the joints click into each other. Use a plastic mallet and wooden block and adjust the joints. Open the joints on the upper sheet a little before this is installed.

Bend the joints out the way to make space for the overlapping sheet.

Overlaps in two adjacent sheeting fields must be at least 500 mm from each other.

Place the cut sheets around the chimney.Fold up the edges 25 mm.

Continue along the sides and over the previously laid Wakaflex.

Screw in fixing sheet C2SRP above the Wakaflex.

Install the strip roof profiles and eave up to the ridge

Seal around the chimney with a sheet.

Apply Wakaflex (or similar) around the chimney and on top of the sheets. Start at the front.

Finally fix the upper seal.

Roof transitions

Use fixing sheet C1MSRP and place sealing tape against the part that will lie against the roofing sheet.

Put the sealant at the joint between fixing sheet and the joints to prevent water penetrating into the overlap.

Use fixing sheet C2SRP for the upper roof section’s fixing. Place a rubber moulding against the part that will lie against fittings OVMSRP or OVKSRP.

Fix the fixing sheet C2SRP on the roof transition fitting.

Fix roofing sheets on the upper section of the roof. Make sure the sheets fasten in the fixing sheet.

Fix the C1MSRP bracket between each joint. On the lower roof section.

Place fitting OVMSRP or OVKSRP above the roof transition. Ensure the fitting fastens in the fixing sheet properly.

Ridge capping saddle roof

The ridge support is normally installed 138 mm from the ridge edge or at a suitable distance so that the ridge capping receives sufficient support. A sealing tape is glued to the underside of the ridge support to ensure that water does not penetrate beyond this. The cables from the solar cell module are fed in a flexible tube through the hole in the ridge support.

Secure barge board fitting VISRP with screw A13K at 400 mm centres. Start at the eave. Splicing is carried out with 100 mm overlap.

The optimisers are screwed securely above the ridge support, either alongside or transversely to the ridge. NB! Do not forget to install the optimisers in the correct sequence and paste the QR codes onto the layout plan if this has not already been done.

The area under the fittings can be used for cabling. NB! Remember to use a protective tube and avoid transitions that could be a risk of leakage.

The optimisers are connected together with quick connectors in accordance with the basic circuit arrangement (image of two solar modules beside each other). The cables must not be installed on any sharp edges and must not lie loose on the roof. These should preferably be installed with cable clamps or in a perforated plastic tube.

Barge board flashing

Screw the flashing securely in the same way as for the barge boards. Avoid screwing through both the sheets as this will prevent movement.

The detailed image at the side shows how the optimisers are installed under the roof capping and ventilated.

The barge boards are installed up to the ridge and screwed securely. Remember not to screw too far up where the gable flashing is later installed.

Fold the gable flashing and ensure that this fits against the roof.

Cut out the ridge capping for the barge boards. Screw the ridge capping securely to the ridge support. NB! Avoid long screws above the connection box on the solar cells!

Mark and cut the gable flashing so that this fits the pitch of the roof.

Maintenance

Lindab SolarRoof does not require much maintenance but a good visual inspection must be carried out. The solar panels are relatively slippery and therefore self-cleaning. Clean panels ensure maximum energy production.

Use the mobile app or site monitor on SolarEdge’s website to monitor your system.

Avoid using sharp and pointed objects to clean and rinse away dirt and precipitation from the panel. This can damage and short circuit the modules. Snow clearing should be avoided as far as possible as this can damage the solar panels.

NB! If snow clearing must be performed, it is important that snow shovels and other equipment are only used above the joints!
