Division 1 – Primula Oval, Lindfield

Division 2 – Allan Small Oval, East Killara

  • As part of the Years 3-6 assembly, students were led in the song ‘ROAR’ accompanied by legendary

guitarists Mr Katrak and Mr Reid. The words reinforce our messages in the Resilience Project and

growth mindset lessons. Class 3F taught us about character strengths including zest, kindness, bravery,

humour and honesty. Well done 3F and Mrs Foreshew!

Killara Schools Partnership Workshop – Visual Literacy Year 5

Killara High School once again hosted a selection of talented students from our neighbouring primary

schools. This year, we invited some Year 5 students into the Library to engage in a hands-on lesson in

Visual Literacy. These students from Gordon East, Killara, Lindfield, Lindfield East and Roseville Public

Schools learnt about various visual techniques used in picture books, and how these techniques

enhanced the meaning in the texts. The students then formed groups and used these visual techniques

to create a persuasive iMovie trailer to promote a particular picture book to the rest of their school. The

students were very creative; using fabulous acting, drawings, photos and abstract images to create their

‘movie’ trailers. Students then took their trailers away on a USB to share them with the rest of their

    school.

Led by Mrs Chami and Ms Dixon, some students from Year 9 helped to guide each group of students

    through the project.

  • Dr Kristy Goodwin – Be the Pilot of the Digital Plane!

Last night, some of you joined a strong audience of around 300 people at Killara HS to hear Dr Kristy

Goodwin explain how to navigate the digital world with your children. She gave many practical

suggestions based on current research. Her clear message was that we as parents need to be the pilot

of the plane not a passenger. We need to set the boundaries and be aware of what, when and how our

children are using their devices. She advocates for a ‘landing space’ for all devices each night so that

devices are not taken into the bedroom when children should be sleeping. In addition, Kristy believes

that banning technology is not practical but that we need to ‘plan not ban technology’. Explicit teaching of

how and when to use technology will set our children up for success in the digital world. Open

communication is the key – your children need to be comfortable to tell you about any inappropriate

content or message so that you can deal with it together.

Dr Goodwin also recommends that you have a cybersafety system in your home. She has partnered with

Family Zone and I have included the flyer here. She has very generously shared her eBook with us for

further tips and access to her website.

  • Updated information about COVID-19 (formerly referred to Novel Coronavirus) for schools to consider using when communicating with parents & caregivers

    Dear parent or caregiver,

The NSW Department of Education is working closely with the NSW Ministry of Health in response to the unfolding international COVID-19 (formerly referred to as Novel Coronavirus) situation.

    Further travel restriction

Effective 1 March 2020 the Federal Government has issued a travel ban on foreigners coming to Australia from Iran. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents coming from Iran will be allowed entry to Australia, and from 1 March they are required to self-isolate for a period of 14 days after departing Iran consistent with the restrictions for those entering from China. Additionally, Australians have been advised NOT to travel to Iran.

Updated advice from the NSW Government for parents and affected staff regarding COVID -19 is:

    • Any student or staff member who has been in, or transited through, mainland China (not just Hubei province) or has been in Iran is excluded from work, school or child care services for 14 days from the date they left mainland China or Iran (as the COVID-19 incubation period can be as long as two weeks).

    • Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return. • Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last

contact with the confirmed case. • Students and staff who have returned to Australia from mainland China or Iran more than

14 days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school.

The NSW Ministry of Health has processes to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the NSW Ministry of Health.

Consistent with current guidelines, students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with the NSW Department of Education’s current practice, if any student becomes unwell, the school will implement infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the NSW Ministry of Health as appropriate.

Maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring and spreading respiratory infections. Parents and caregivers are asked to promote good hygiene, including handwashing with soap as handwashing is the single most effective way to reduce the spread of germs that cause respiratory disease.

The NSW Ministry of Health has advice and resources about COVID-19 in English and Chinese.

The NSW Department of Education will continue monitoring the COVID-19 situation and provide parents and caregivers with updated information about the virus.

  • Important updated information for parents about COVID-19 2/3/2020 – Chinese Simplified

    有关 COVID-19(以前称为新型冠状病毒,即 Novel Coronavirus(2019-nCoV ))

  • Absences from School

When a child is absent from school parents and carers must produce an explanation within seven days.

This may be done via the SkoolBag App (details in this newsletter), a note to the teacher, an email to the

teacher or office or a phone call. If leave of 10 days or more is required, an Extended Leave Form must

be completed and then the leave approved by the Principal. This form can be collected from the Office

and can also be found on the school website under the Notes tab. https://lindfield-

    High School 2021

The High School Enrolment Form for entry into Year 7 2021 will be sent home on

11 March 2020. This guide contains information surrounding the transition to

secondary school and the Expression of Interest Form. Please complete the

form carefully and return it to your child’s class teacher NO LATER THAN

FRIDAY 20 MARCH 2020. This allows us time to process the forms before

forwarding them on to the high schools. If any details on the form are incorrect

or if you have any questions, then please contact Mr Hayllar immediately.

    National Young Leaders Day

On Monday, Mr Hayllar had the pleasure of taking our school leadership team to the International

Convention Centre in Darling Harbour to attend the National Young Leaders Day. The students listened

to four speakers: Erin Molan; Rove McManus; Bianca Chatfield and John Coutis. Each of the speakers

spoke about some of the adversity that they had faced in their lives and especially how they overcame

difficulties to become more resilient. Students were encouraged to follow their dreams and were told not

to give up on what inspires them. Students were reminded that they don’t need to wear a badge to a leader

    in their community.

The day was enjoyed by all and each of the students represented our school with excellent Lindfield

manners and followed our ROAR expectations at all times.

How can parents help these children?

    • Choose alternative sandwich spreads to peanut butter and Nutella. Inform your child that

these foods can trigger an anaphylactic reaction.

    • Reinforce the school’s NO FOOD SHARING message.

Please note, no students are allowed to bring

glass bottles to school for safety reason

    2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/

The Premier’s Reading Challenge began this week on Monday and we have hit the ground running with

seven students who have already finished by Day Two! Remember, you can add any books that you have

read already this year to start you off! The Challenge will continue until Friday 28 August.

Congratulations to the following students who have completed the Challenge this week!

This is a free, state-wide program available to all NSW schools. Students

are encouraged to read a certain number of books depending on their

year level from a set list of books. These books can be readily found in

our school Library and at local council Libraries.

We strongly encourage your child to take part in this very worthwhile

Challenge. It is designed to inspire a love of reading, can help improve

literacy skills and exposes children to quality literature. It also helps to

support our students to aspire in Library lessons, as part of our whole-

school ROAR expectations, by encouraging our students to read a wider and diverse range of books. For

every five books read, students in Years 3-6 will receive a ROAR card for Aspiring in the Library! Names

of students who complete the Challenge will be named and congratulated in our school newsletter and

Years 3-6 now also have their own ‘Wall of Fame’ in our school Library!

To assist and encourage all K-2 students to take part in the Challenge, books read in class and in Library

will be added to student lists by the Teacher Librarian. So please do not be concerned if you see different

books added to your child’s list that you have not entered yourself.

All books will need to be logged online via the NSW PRC website using your child’s individual logon

details. This is the same username and password they use to access computers and Oliver Library at

school. Years 3-6 students will be given time to complete their records online during Library lessons.

    NEW RULES!

Some exciting new rules have just been announced, including the amazing change that THREE books

from any series can now be added! Go to https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/rules.html for more

information, updated privacy information and lists of certificates awarded.

Also, check out the great video explaining how to add books using the student site!

Please do not hesitate to contact or see us in the Library if you have any questions or issues with logging in

    or entering titles!

  • Canteen

Save the Date! Chinese Specials Day and Colouring Competition

Our Term 1 Specials Day is coming Tuesday 24 March. Back by popular demand!

We’re celebrating Chinese cuisine and culture. There will be food, music and

colouring competitions to bring our community together.

Our amazing mums from our Chinese community will be cooking up a storm, made

fresh in the Canteen with love.

Watch this space for more details about the menu, our fun colouring competition and

    when orders open on FlexiSchools.

Celebrate your child’s birthday by helping in the Canteen

Would you like to make your child’s birthday extra special?

If you’re helping in the Canteen on their birthday, you can!

Your child will love seeing you and getting a hug with their birthday bucket or special

treat! When you help in the Canteen, your children receive a special ‘I’m allowed a

treat’ sticker – which makes a lunchtime visit very exciting. Parents have told us they

find helping in the Canteen on their child’s birthday really rewarding, especially if

they can only help occasionally due to work, study or family commitments.
