As my time in IRHA comes to a close, I am immensely proud that my final year in IRHA was spent with the amazing leaders that came to us this year. From all of our ups and downs, trials and tribulations, I have learned so much more about myself and what it takes to be a leader. I can only hope that I have given as much as I have gained from all of you!

I am extremely proud to have served on the IRHA Executive Board this year. The year brought many challenges but also major successes. One of the reasons why I love this organization so much is be-cause I am always presented with situations that help me grow as a leader. My experiences from this year have helped me become more confident and stronger in my leadership. The talent and energy in IRHA this year has been phenomenal. It has been an absolute pleasure working with such cre-ative leaders and being able to share their accomplishments with them. I am also truly, truly blessed to have worked with such a great team and family for Residence Hall Week 2011. I am grateful for their year long dedication to the event and appreciate all their efforts to make RHW a spectac-ular event this year. In addition I am thankful for all the support from the Department of Hous-ing and Residence Education. After four years of service to IRHA it is wonderfully comforting to be surrounded by younger amazing leaders who are going to take this organization to the next step.

Page 8: Lindsey Gaga

IRHA has been phonomenal this year from the perparation of another world’s larg-est event (without worrying about filling thousands of water balloons), to having co-programmed to make the best RA banquet that has been seen in years. The best of all the great events we had I believe was Tunnel of Oppression because it helped residents learn about oppression and opened their eyes to the different types that exist in our society. Personally, I also enjoyed all of the great fun buck-et prices that we gave out at the end of every meeting. FInally, I enjoyed creat-ing memories with the IRHA body and executive board. I have had a great time getting to know the different AG’s and being part of such a great organization!

This year has been really great. IRHA has led me to meet some really great people, as well as to challenge myself to try harder in everything that I do. I’ve learned so much this year from IRHA and it’s something I’ll definitely remember for a long time, if not for forever.

aShley RicheyBusinessManager

Page 10: Lindsey Gaga

This year has been interesting to say the least. I’ve had the chance to learn a lot, see a very diverse group of personalities interact with each other and from that learned to become a better leader. Having the opportunity to serve IRHA this last year was an honor and it is a privilege to have the opportunity again this upcoming year. Nothing can replace hard work and everyone is capable of truly extraordinary things when they put effort and care into what they do.

As a close friend said to me very recently while I was having a mental breakdown, “I bet there isn’t a day or even an hour that goes by that you don’t think about IRHA. It’s what you eat, sleep and breathe. IRHA has been your life for the past year and you just don’t know what you are going to do now.” It is so very true. What am I going to do without programs to go set up and break down? What am I going to do when I don’t have pre-meeting, meeting, post-meeting, and post-post-meeting dinner? What am I going to do with my time if I am not sitting in the IRHA office listening to Severin and Munir on speakerphone as theyargue over whether we should buy cookies or ice cream for twelve cents more? I really don’t know. I am sure that I will find some way to fill up my time. Maybe I will do things that normal humans do- like sleep, eat three meals a day or study while it’s light outside. All I know is that IRHA has changed my perception of the world forever. I shake my head at the sight of Styrofoam, I think all items are reusable (including plastic table cloths), and I know that the dark blue chairs- not the royal blue chairsbelong on the rack. But more importantly, I have made the best friends I’ve ever had, rolled a shopping cart across the stage of University Auditorium and rolled down a mountain of Welcome Bags after dragging carts full of highlighters through a torrential down pour during a Tornado Warning. I have done things I will never have the chance to do again and for that I am more thankful than you will ever know. The experiences I have gained and the people I have met through IRHA will stay with me forever.Thank you, IRHA, for everything you have given me.

I really enjoyed working with the students in IRHA this year. It was great to see great successful new programs as well as the old favorites. I really enjoyed getting to know students through meetings, conferences, and programs. I hope that everyone had as much fun in IRHA this year as I did!

I celebrate having had the opportunity to get to know a great group of student leaders this year. IRHA has had great debates and celebrations throughout the year, sticking together through all the ups and downs. The excitement, passion and autonomy of the students for everything they do in IRHA is fantastic. As an adviser, I strived to be a support for the organization and can only hope I have achieved this goal. From the strength I have witnessed in the organization, I am certain IRHA will continue to do great things for the community of residents they serve at the University of Florida.

Captain IRHA flew over Century Tower for the

first time on August 12th, 2010. He knew it was time for learning, leadership development, community building and event planning. It was time for Fall Leadership. New and old Area Government officers alike gathered to bask in the glorious light of housing a week before Move-In Day on August 18th. Attendees par ticipated in a photo-scavenger hunt, a True Colors presentation by Ryan Winget and a vast array of workshops. A community service project at Wilmot Gardens challenged IRHA members to get in touch with their outdoorsy side as they

plucked weeks and cut branches. The IRHAteer Aler t was introduced as this years’ mail for IRHA meetings. The mailbox became a globe to go along with the Captain IRHA Theme. Munir awed the crowd with the always-stunning Cash Box Training Presentation. Severin and Ashley pelted onlookers with candy (literally) as they stormed into the Broward Basement to try and spice up their budget presentations. Fall Leadership came to a close with the traditional banquet in the Yulee Basement. Paper plate awards were presented to everyone, including executive board members.

Tunnel of Oppression was an intense and groundbreaking event that provided

participants with an experience like no other offered at the University of Florida.

Oppression is something that surrounds us every day. The Tunnel was separated into rooms and topics: racism, religion, sexual orientation, body image, immigration, the

evolution of slavery and genocide. Students, staff and faculty lined up outside of the

Broward Basement Tunnel on November 4th, 2010 starting at 5 p.m. They were

encountered by an immigration officer who harassed them in Polish, saw graphic photos of slavery and genocide and watched as an actress portraying a member of the LGBT

community was attacked for her sexual orientation. The Tunnel ended in the Broward

Basement with a room where Tunnel-goers were debriefed. They spoke with counselors

from the Counseling and Wellness Center and wrote what they had experienced on a

large banner hanging on the wall.

iDodgeball Fight For the third year in a row,

IRHA went for a world record. Departing from

the Worlds’ Largest Water Balloon Fights Against Breast Cancer from the two previ-ous years, Directors Adam Lindsley and Jacob Speedy had world record wishes and dodgeball deams when they proposed the World’s Largest Dodgeball Fight ben-efitting the Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County. A program aimed at bringing the residents together on November 7th, 2010 at 3 p.m., Dodgeball Fight was truly an innovative idea. Marketing efforts for the event were intense. The staff took over Turlington while classes were changing to put on flash mobs of freeze-

frame dodgeball fights. With months of planning and plenty of logistical challenges, the Dodgeball Fight came together. On the Day of the Fight, Flavet Field was filled with over 500 students split into two teams- the traditional orange and blue. IRHA volunteers stood in the center of the 300-foot-wide, fenced-in dodgeball court wearing black and white referee shirts. The whistle was blown and in moments the air was filled with a rainbow of dodgeballs. Participants kicked up dust as they ducked, dived, dipped and dodged in the afternoon sun. Although it did not break the record, Dodgeball Fight was an excellent program with high attendance that was held for a worthy cause.

Winter Ball

Page 101: Lindsey Gaga

Winter Ball Ustler Hall was shivering with

delight and burning with passion at the same time as IRHA’s Fire and Ice themed Winter Ball took over in a whirlwind of glitter and music. On December 2, 2010, IRHA members dressed in their finest red and blur attire and flocked to the pre-dance social hosted by the secretaries in Fletcher Library. Once they had finished their mocktails, the party began in Ustler Hall.

DJ DJ cranked out the tunes while Sean Johnson shook his money maker. Lights twinkled from the balconies and fiery red fabric swirled overhead as the historian’s slideshow played and end-of-semester awards were given.

Philanthropic efforts were made for Peaceful Paths and Toys for Tots leading up to the event. Winter Ball allowed IRHA members to dress up and get down!

Writing on the Wall

Page 103: Lindsey Gaga

Writing on the Wall

For the eighth year in a row, the Writing on the Wall project made a statement on

Campus. In the Plaza of the Americas a 40 foot by 8 foot wall was erected. Made from bricks painted by students, the wall stood for hatred, oppression, racism, prejudice and a slew negativity that plagues our campus and the world. Students were given the opportunity to paint any hurtful words that have been said to them on a brick in a vast array of colors. The wall stood in the Plaza for a week and was watched 24 hours a day by volunteers from Area Governments, NRHH, IRHA exec, Student Governments and RAs. Through the cold and the torrential rain, volunteers protected the wall. Finally, the day came for the Wall to fall. On a beautiful Friday afternoon the Writing on the Wall Project came to close as students gathered to hear a performance by No Southern Accent and to pull down the wall of hatred. The wall crashed to ground and students smashed apart the bricks, freeing themselves from the vicious words painted on the wall.

art Gallery

Our halls are home to students with a range of talents and abilities. This year, the IRHA Art Gallery showcased

the artistic talents of residents across campus. “Shine” was the theme of this years’ gallery. Held on

April 7th and April 14th in Graham Gallery and Reid Gallery, respectively, the IRHA Art Gallery reached out

to residents to provide a cultural experience. Art was provided by everyone- from RAs, IRHA body

members to IRHA executive board members. It proved that artists come in all shapes, sizes and majors. Live

music floated through the air while student meandered through the gallery, stopping to admire the many works

in different mediums.

kick-off

IRHA took over the Reitz Union North Lawn on March 25th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. With inflatables gracing the green grass outside of the union, Kick-Off served as the marker for the start of Residence Hall Week. Pizza was passed out and donated Pepsi products flowed from cans as over 500 students passed through to enjoy the festivities. The sno cone and cotton candy machines hummed busily as the never-ending stream of students marveled at the massive pillars covered in publicity for future events.

Page 116: Lindsey Gaga

The sun set on the Reitz Union North Lawn and IRHA’s inflatable screen went up. IRHA worked in conjunction with Gator Nights to play the classic Disney movie Mulan. Drinks and subs were provided for those in attendance. Going along with the IRHAound

the World theme of RHW, Mulan showcased a little bit of Asian culture with Disney flair. Stu-dents and IRHA members sang along to “I’ ll Make a Man Out of You” and passersby stopped to join. It was a night filled with food, fun and friends.
