We’ve started 2005, our 15th year with some great news - a prosecution against the Mulheim’s owners plus 2000 storm sewer overfl ows and 1000 sewage treatment works to be upgraded over the next 5 years. Your input in these campaigns, particularly the Mulheim, has been instrumental in maintaining our campaign momentum and it has highlighted more than ever to us your uniqueness as a group of people. We ask you to do something and you do it! SAS are very lucky to have such support. But there’s always more we can do - this time it’s sending off the postcards on page 13 and converting your electricity supply to a renewable source - there’s no better time to do that following our fundraising deal with Ecotricity (page 12). Finally we hope you like the new look Pipeline, bringing you the SAS campaign in Technicolor! We’ve stuck with the natural veggie inks we’ve always used but have improved on the eco-friendliness of the paper, which is now 100% post consumer waste recycled paper. RICH HARDY Look out for a classic 15th birthday celebration issue of Pipeline in May!

We’re pleased to report that our Mulheim campaign has culminated in success. After 22 months of persistent campaigning we have seen the company prosecuted for a breach of shipping legislation. On top of the £2.4 million costs borne by the company for the salvage operation, the company has now been offi cially penalised for its shoddy seamanship that resulted in the Mulheim’s toxic cargo littering the whole of Cornwall’s north coast beaches. Here’s a snapshot of how SAS campaigned and how people power (i.e. YOU) played a part in ensuring some environmental justice was done. March 22 2003 The RMS Mulheim, en route from Ireland to Germany, collides with rocks in Gamper Bay, a few hundred metres from Lands End. On board are 6 crewmembers and 2200 tonnes of potentially toxic car scrap, including shredded dashboards, seats and tyres. March 23 2003SAS are on the scene and concerned over lack of planning to protect the coastline from escaping cargo. 100,000 litres of fuel oil has been lost and visual evidence suggests that cargo is escaping into marine environment unabated.

14 May 2003Plastic foam and car scrap is regularly being discovered on Cornish beaches right up the coast towards Devon – this is hundreds of miles of coastline being affected. SAS’s evidence and monitoring of beaches by local water users is helping to ensure the clean up costs are being borne by the shipper as part of the ‘polluter pays’ principle – the cost eventually reaches £2.4 million. SAS calls for a prosecution. 8 August 2003A report in the shipping publication Lloyds List has fi nally confi rmed the reason why the Mulheim ended up on rocks in Gamper Bay. With no second crewman on watch or navigational positions plotted on charts, the Chief Offi cer managed to get his trousers caught whilst getting up from his seat and subsequently knocked himself out. Whilst he remained unconscious the other crew slept. There was no alarm system set. 9 October 2003The RMS Mulheim began to break up after a 3-metre swell pounded the Cornish coastline. SAS witness small rafts of plastic car scrap in the water and believe the salvage operation collected little more than half of the cargo – the rest lying dormant on the seabed or destructively

March 24 2003SAS start cleaning beaches at Sennen and are the fi rst to show that Mulheim cargo is having an impact on local beaches as it washes up with each high tide. SAS urgently calls for speeding up of the salvage operation and express concern at delays to source salvage equipment quickly. 28 April 2003A decision is made to leave the wreck in situ rather than salvage it – car scrap continues to leak from the vessel. SAS have called for samples of the cargo to be made public to determine a true environmental risk from the cargo. 31 April 2003 Frustrated at a failure of authorities to take or release cargo sample results, SAS obtain a cargo sample and send it to Greenpeace laboratories for analysis. Results confi rm the presence of PCB’s, which are cause for concern. In humans PCB’s can cause health effects such as skin ailments, reproductive disorders, liver disease and are suspected carcinogens. They are known animal carcinogens and bio accumulate and bio magnify in the food chain. The results have re-inforced the destructiveness of this incident and have strengthened SAS calls for containment of the cargo.

fi nding its way into the bodies of marine creatures unfortunate enough to swallow it. SAS re-iterates its call for a prosecution to ensure shippers are penalised and to highlight a need to move away from fl ags of convenience, poorly maintained vessels and using incompetent crew. 1 Year OnAnother Mulheim crashes, but this time at the Shipping Minister’s Offi ce at the Department for Transport in London. SAS simulate a shipping accident having made their own version of the Mulheim and fi lled it with Mulheim waste. SAS remind the Shipping Minister that a prosecution must be forthcoming. Mulheim scrap is still evident on beaches. Lib Dems lend their support to the campaign. 19 November 2004We start sending SAS supporter’s messages to the Minister along with a piece of Mulheim scrap. Messages will be sent each day until a prosecution is made. 7 January 2005Camborne magistrates charge RMS Mulheim owners with a breach of maritime safety rules. Fines of £10,000 (the maximum under the current legislation) and costs of £11,000 were given to the owners. A separate shipping incident (and very similar to that of the Mulheim) involving the ship’s owners led to total fi nes and costs of £42,000 for RMS.

Whilst the fi nes are less than we hoped for, they are signifi cant. Many shipping incidents fail to reach the courts because of the use of fl ags of convenience. This makes clarifying ownership diffi cult and therefore apportioning blame is problematic. As a result of this prosecution we hope that shippers will take note. In particular they should only use properly trained crew - and crew that they look after. SAS will continue to work in achieving a radical overhaul of shipping legislation and to press for greater protection of high-risk sea areas with a unique marine environment. People power played an effective part in this campaign and we thank you for doing what we ask, when we ask it!

The action formed part of our ongoing campaign that calls for recognition from Europe that recreational water users are also ‘bathers’ and should NOT be excluded from new bathing water legislation. The legislation is there to protect public health from the threats of pollution. Worryingly, we were aware that unlike the European Parliament, the Environment Ministers do not share our view and so the theme of the action was one of ‘DISCRIMINATION’.

Dressed in period costume and carrying trademark surfboards... SURFRAGETTES from SAS used ‘Don’t Discriminate’ placards to challenge Environment Ministers over their unsatisfactory plans for reforming the EU Bathing Water Directive. The action took its lead from the suffragette movement, which successfully brought women the vote. We urged Ministers to ‘Give Us Their Vote’ as they went in for the 2 day meeting.

Unfortunately a majority of Ministers chose to ignore the use of Europe’s ‘bathing waters’ by millions of recreational water users in forming their ‘common position’ on the 29 year old legislation - a decision we

A few days before Christmas campaigners from SAS demo’d outside a Brussels Environment Ministers’ meeting. As is standard practice at Environment Ministers’ meetings these days, they were fi rst met by SAS campaigners!

SURFRAGETTES DEMO’ SURFRAGETTES DEMO’ ENVIRONMENT MINISTERSENVIRONMENT MINISTERS

do not accept. By choosing not to broaden the scope of the bathing

water directive to incorporate the needs of different types of ‘bathers’ at well-used spots, Ministers are failing to protect the principle users of Europe’s bathing waters. In short, they are condemning recreational water users to continue to run a health gauntlet at EU bathing waters, which are often heavily polluted, particularly from sewage.

Thanks to SAS campaigning, the European Parliament has already taken the view that the Directive should incorporate ‘recreational water users’ in its defi nition of bathing as well as improving water quality standards to better protect public health. Now the Environment Ministers opinion will go back to the European Parliament for consideration - possibly in April. It’s vital we ensure the Parliament maintain their support for recreational water users and don’t cave in to the Ministers’ assessment. As ever SAS will be working hard at a political level to ensure we get a fair deal and we’ll report on our progress in the next Pipeline.

REPORT

SAS are stoked that 2000 unsatisfactory storm sewer overfl ows and 1000 sewage treatment works will see major improvements following OFWAT’s announcement of water bill prices for the 2005-2010 period.

We have campaigned vigorously over the past 5 years to secure further environmental improvements for you, our members, and we are pleased that £3.5 billion (21% of the total investment) will be spent on addressing environmental problems. The net effect of course, is that the beaches, lakes and rivers we use for recreation will be getting ever more cleaner and safer.

Of particular concern for SAS has been the impact storm sewer overfl ows (or CSO’s) have been having on bathing water quality. Many of the pollution incidents we have seen over the last few years have been related to CSO’s. Ultimately they are there to be used in emergency situations (to stop sewer fl ooding in houses for example) but all too often they have been discharging a mixture of raw sewage and stormwater onto popular ‘bathing and recreational waters’ - even during dry weather conditions, when they should NOT be fl owing.

SAS have in 2003 and 2004 made a strong link with CSO discharges and a number of health incidents that have left water users with gastro intestinal illness, ear, nose and throat infections or impetigo infections. We hope this new investment will lead to a reduction in such

SAS SCORES 2000 STORM SEWER SAS SCORES 2000 STORM SEWER OVERFLOW IMPROVEMENTS AS OVERFLOW IMPROVEMENTS AS WATER INDUSTRY REVIEW ENDSWATER INDUSTRY REVIEW ENDS

incidents. If we can also get local authorities behind an improved beach signage strategy that warns water users when water quality may be poor then we will all have much clearer information that will reduce our chance of sickness.

However, we remain disappointed by the reluctance of government, water regulators and water companies to plan ‘climate change’ into their investment calculations. By not accounting for up to date rainfall data there have to be question marks over water customers getting value for money. SAS will be campaigning vigorously for climate change accounting to be a core part of the water industry’s investment programme and that more sustainable drainage systems are needed in taking pressure off the sewerage infrastructure to help reduce pollution incidents.

SAS local campaigns to improve the CSO network in St Agnes and Gwithian have seen some success and will be upgraded by March 2006 and March 2009 respectively. Pipeline readers will be aware that both locations have had signifi cant problems with CSO’s and related health incidents. Further details in the next issue.

Tuesday 23rd November saw two crews of rowers challenging each other to a boat race with a twist on the Thames tideway at Putney Embankment. From the starting horn the two rowing eights burst off the start line for an 800m sprint on the stretch of water most famous for the Oxford/Cambridge boat race. Each boat towed one of our 14’ infl atable turds and the crews were clad in gas masks as a demonstration against the unacceptable levels of sewage pollution in the river. The Thames came to the attention of the nation last summer after several large discharges killed much of the life in the tideway section of the river.

SAS had joined forces with some of our rowing members and as a result a local campaign group RATS (Rowers Against Thames Sewage) was formed to win improvements to sewage discharges on the river - particularly in seeking an end to the unsatisfactory CSO’s (Combined Sewage and Stormwater Overfl ows) often responsible for the pollution. The Thames receives 20 million tonnes of sewage discharges every year. This is a direct result of lack of investment in modernising and expanding London’s sewage system to bring it into line with EU directives and not controlling discharges into the river, caused by the antiquated Victorian system which is unable to cope with the increased load from comparatively minor rainfall.

Campaign boat race sheds light on raw sewage nightmareTHE THAMES TURD RACETHE THAMES TURD RACE

The red BioHaz team stormed to victory at Putney bridge leaving the blue GasHaz team fuming in their wake. There was some talk of race fi xing as the GasHaz faecal infl atable looked decidedly sick and was not running in the water at all cleanly.

SAS and RATS went on to deliver a 320-signature petition from river users to the offi ces of the Department of the Environment. Since our action we have received a letter from the Environment Minister confi rming sewage treatment works at Mogden, Beckton, Crossness and Riverside will be improved in the current investment period, which should lead to some water quality improvements in the tidal Thames. We will however continue to campaign to bring more improvements to CSO’s as they have largely been ignored in this Periodic Review.

SAS have welcomed the commission of a year-long study of recreational water users and their use of the Thames. They are being asked to log (hee hee) any sickness that is potentially derived from their contact with water in the Thames.

THE ISLAND THAT SEWAGE THE ISLAND THAT SEWAGE TREATMENT FORGOT!TREATMENT FORGOT!As reported in the last edition of Pipeline, Guernsey has a real problem with their sewage treatment. The problem being that there is NO TREATMENT AT ALL, just a grid at the end of a sewage pipe to take out the grit and rags. Without sewage treatment the viruses and bacteria present in the effl uent just fl ow into the sea waiting for a hapless water user to latch on to! With over 65,000 people living on Guernsey, that’s an astronomical amount of harmful viruses and bacteria dumped into the sea ever day.

With this in mind an SAS hitsquad went over to Guernsey in October to meet water users and ignite a local campaign. To get things up and running we fi rst held a public meeting with the kind support of Guernsey Yacht Club. The room soon became standing room only with people itching to fi nd out more about the solutions and how to put them into place. It was clear that water users in Guernsey wanted a full sewage treatment policy.

The next morning an SAS hitsquad took the support we received from the public meeting straight to the Government Buildings with a wetsuit and board protest.

An impromptu meeting here with Public Services Minister, Deputy Bell, allowed us to both deliver a letter of protest and for Minister Bell to hear local people’s concerns from the 20 activists that accompanied us. SAS were told in that meeting that the Government would address the issue of full sewage treatment in a report that is due before the States early in 2005.

A local petition was kick started before we left that called for a full sewage treatment policy to be adopted by the States of Guernsey and we promised local water users we’d be back in 2 months to deliver collected petition signatures to the Chief Minister. 2 months later SAS were back to deliver 1921 signatures to the Chief Minister Lawrie Morgan (he’s the island’s Tony Blair equivalent). Whilst talking with Mr Morgan, SAS were able to elaborate on the success of neighbouring Channel Island Jersey, who implemented an Ultra Violet Light Disinfection policy to treat their sewage properly in the mid 1990’s. As a result, Jersey has become a haven for watersports enthusiasts and has boosted is economy through a healthy tourism industry backed up by clean and safe water.

SAS will continue to keep up the pressure for full sewage treatment with a concerted campaign on the island in the run up to the issuing of a waste strategy report. The report is expected early this year from the States of Guernsey government.

In December, a team from SAS met delegates arriving for a COAST Public Health Conference in TorquayThose arriving were met by SAS with larger than life ‘Pollution Incident’ signs and the SAS report ‘There’s No Such Thing As Too Much Information’, designed to urge key policy makers to get behind a national signage strategy that would help better inform the public when bathing water quality can be poor.

More than 200 health specialists, local authorities, water company offi cials, environment campaigners and academics attended the conference. SAS were buoyed by the new interest of the public health sector and believe their interest in this issue could bring some exciting changes.

Over the last 2 summers we have become increasingly concerned at the lack of information beachgoers receive to notify them of the risks of using certain bathing waters at certain times. During the 2004 bathing season, nearly 70 water samples failed mandatory EU standards in England and Wales but despite this, only four incidents resulted in warning signs being issued.

SAS asked local councils around the country why they did not issue public warnings. Responses included time delays, breakdowns in communication and lack of protocol for such situations. Some even refused to do so

in the future on the grounds that issuing signs would be ‘misleading’ to the public??

SAS and the Marine Conservation Society have already been helping to set guidelines for pollution incident public health warnings. We have been working closely with the RNLI on voluntary signage guidelines local authorities can implement on bathing waters this season and hope to see more prominent signage on some bathing beaches this summer. However we are asking for your help by completing the tear out postcard on page 13 and posting it to your local authority’s Head of Environmental Health to help boost this campaign.

In the last issue of Pipeline we reported on 2 health incidents we believe were caused as a result of coming into contact with faecal contaminated water. One was an Ecoli 0157 outbreak at Watergate Bay, the other was impetigo infections at Gwithian. Whilst it seems likely the impetigo cases were as a result of sewage polluted water, as tests showed water was below the EU minimum standard, the Ecoli 0157 cases never found a clear source. Both however are good examples of how a resort with informative signage would be benefi cial to the public at times when water quality is a risk to health.

BARRIERS TO BARRIERS TO GREEN BUYING: GREEN BUYING: HOUSEHOLD HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALSCHEMICALSA report for SAS’s educational trust Clean Water Initiative has recently been completed following a year-long study by the University of Plymouth’s Marine and Coastal Policy Research Group.

The report titled ‘Barriers to Green Buying: Household Chemicals’ was funded by the customer led, ethically guided Cooperative Bank and looked to better understand consumers’ purchasing of everyday household cleaning products. In particular it focused on research exploring the attitudes of the UK public to chemicals in household products and measured awareness of their environmental impacts.

Within the retail sector there are a multitude of products sold into a wide variety of applications, including cosmetics and personal hygiene and cleaning products. These products are commonly marketed on the basis of features such as price, performance and smell. However some products focus on the ‘low environmental impact’ of their products (so called ‘low impact’ products) using lack of toxic constituents as a selling point. This of course infers that other products must contain these toxic components, but this is not made clear through labelling. After or during use these products are typically disposed of through the sewerage system before being transported to the sewage treatment works. While treatment will remove some components, more persistent contaminants may not be broken down and may subsequently be discharged into coastal waters. This may present a problem since little is known about the long term effects the majority of these products have in the wider environment.

As part of the research, retailers, manufacturers and other stakeholders were interviewed, a National Opinion Poll (NOP) was carried out and consumer focus groups were used to explore the factors that infl uence the purchasing of such products.

The main fi ndings were: Around half of the people who took part in the NOP did not think about what they put down the drains and the impact it may have on the environment. When questioned in detail, many participants did indicate that they believed the products they purchased could be both harmful to health and the environment. Young people (18-24) showed the least awareness of environmental issues. The link between chemicals in household products and personal health via exposure during use is often clearly perceived. The link between chemicals contaminating the water environment and exposure via this route is less well established. Cost and performance were given as the most important factors in buying decisions. It is embedded in the public’s perception that low impact products are more expensive and less effective. Some people said it was often diffi cult to fi nd low impact products in retail outlets. Others said that inadequate product information meant it was hard to select low impact products. Ingredients lists were not seen as useful but a simple accreditation (eco-labelling) system might be helpful, if it was to be developed by someone customers could trust.

RENEWABLE ENERGYRENEWABLE ENERGY A HUB OF ACTIVITYA HUB OF ACTIVITY‘Climate change’ and ‘global warming’ are the buzzwords in the media at the moment and rightly so. As we have long been aware we need to reduce the amount of CO2 we produce or face very damaging climate change due to global warming. The answer lies in cleaner, greener energy sources that produce no waste and no emissions.

But rather than commit comprehensively to a cleaner, greener energy sector the Government are preparing to meet any energy shortfalls by reinvesting in nuclear power stations - a technology that produces radioactive waste. As recreational water users (particularly those using Sandside Bay near Dounrey in Scotland) well know this threatens our water environment and is harmful to human health.

SAS are therefore supportive of the renewable energy sector where cleaner, safer energy is generated. In particular we are working with the Marine Renewables Working Group on the Wave Hub project in Cornwall. The Wave Hub will develop wave energy devices and study the wave energy climate in the South West. It will essentially be a socket on the seabed, 20 km out to sea from St Ives that allows wave energy devices to be plugged in and tested. These devices will feed electricity into the national grid, reducing the demand on fossil fuel and nuclear power stations. Its main benefi t however is that it will help speed up the research and development of the wave energy industry.

First and foremost SAS has been ensuring that recreational water users are represented at the Marine Renewables Working Group. This has resulted in 2 universities developing models to forecast the effects (if any) from the Wave Hub devices on the nearshore surf climate. Early results show that any effect will be negligible but SAS are waiting for the models to be completed, so expect some more news on this in the next issue. In the meantime you could think about switching your electricity source to a renewable one. SAS are working in partnership with Ecotricity (check out the advert below). For every SAS supporter who switches to Ecotricity they will contribute £15.00 to SAS’s campaign fund - REMEMBER you must tell them you are an SAS supporter!

Head of Environment & Health

Affi x Stamp Here

Dear Head of Environment and Health,I am writing to ask your local authority to support a Surfers Against

Sewage initiative for clearer public information, that warns when there is a risk of bathing in polluted water.

As a recreational water user in your local authority area, I ask that you embrace a signage policy that makes clear to ‘bathers’ when a well used ‘water’ is likely to pose a health risk. I believe that improved signage is required that highlights to water users times when water quality is likely to fall below EU minimum standards, for example after heavy rainfall. I would also ask you to use permanent signage that clearly marks any unsatisfactory Storm Sewer Overfl ow discharges that can have an impact on bathing water quality.

With such information being available I will be able to make a more informed choice of when and where I use a ‘water’ for bathing or recreation.

Yours sincerely,

SAS & O’NEILL MARINE ENVIRONMENT SAS & O’NEILL MARINE ENVIRONMENT PROJECT PACKS DROPS PROJECT PACKS DROPS INTO SCHOOLSINTO SCHOOLSThe SAS O’Neill Marine Environmental Project has been sent out to over 1500 primary schools across the UK. The free, colourful, interactive pack invites 9 and 10 year olds (key stage 2) to learn through their school’s curriculum about some of the key problems facing our marine environment today - problems which are likely to be visible to them for the rest of their lives. It also encourages them to look for sustainable solutions and ways of educating others on how to solve key issues such as reducing the impacts of sewage polluted water, marine litter, oil slicks and harmful chemicals.

School classes registering for the project stand a chance of winning a place on our Marine Environment Week. Here school classes will spend the day with the SAS crew and O’Neill pro surfers exploring the Cornish coast in a 35ft RIB (rigid infl atable boat), searching for and learning about dolphins, whales and other local marine wildlife. As part of a fun fi lled day students will take part in marine education workshops with SAS campaigners at Falmouth’s National Maritime Museum and get to see the different exhibitions in the museum. They will also get to watch O’Neill surf fi lms in the museum’s cinema - fi lms starring the very pro’s they will spend the day with.

To be a winner on the Marine Environment Project students will have to earn their place on board by showing they are environmentally aware. As part of their studies they will have to work on a marine environment saving project, with the most imaginative and positive projects getting a place on the project. We have left this very broad as we want the kids to push their creative side and we’re confi dent they’ll come up with some really exciting and original projects. Projects will have to be submitted by the 17th March, and they will be a welcome present as it is the 81st birthday of Jack O’Neill, the founder of O’Neill the boarding company. The winners will be chosen on the 15th April by a celebrity panel.

If you’re a junior member of SAS or a teacher and would like a pack please contact Andy Cummins at SAS. They are great teaching aids and if you’re quick you can still enter and win a great day out for the whole class!

O’Neill riders Sam Lamiroy and Robyn Davies present Andy Cummins with £10,000 to fund the schools project

TEAM TEAM SASSAS

This is a huge thank you to the gurus of long boarding style NINEPLUS for providing us with an amazing fund raiser in the form of the very cool SAS/NINEPLUS towel. We could not have afforded to produce anything like it for ourselves, and they not only came up with the fabulous design (thanks Paul) but they also fronted production costs. Towel sales raised a clear £5000 for SAS in 2004, which by my calculations makes NINEPLUS a brand new 5 STAR SPONSOR.

SAS merchandise exists purely as a fundraising tool, and when people like NINEPLUS make it easier for us, they are getting off their butts and doing something to help us all. BUT...it would be no good without you lot reading this would it? Thanks to all those who supported us by buying the towel, and if you haven’t purchased one yet, don’t worry! They will be available well into spring and early summer.

Team SAS is made up of some of the best surfers the UK has, and a couple of rippers from the U.S. and Oz. They are surfers who want to help the environment and in 2004 they did a sterling job. At the Animal Beach Balls in the summer the SAS tag team won all 3 events and the riders donated half their prize money to SAS, a total of £1,200!!! Thanks to Spencer Hargraves, Sam Lamiroy, Sam Bleakley, Ben Skinner, Rory Bushe, Robyn Davies, Sarah Bentley, Minzie, Joss Ash and Lee Bartlett for their generous donation. Thanks again to Spencer and Sarah as well as Elko and Nathan Phillips for helping out on the SAS Quiksilver Eco Grom Tour along with loads of other Quiksilver team riders. Team SAS members have seen other great successes throughout 2004 with Sam Bleakley winning the longboard event at the SAS Cornish & Open, Ben Skinner being ranked 13th in the world, Gabe winning the old boys division in Tynemouth, Stokes winning the BPSA tour, Spencer winning the Sri Lanka contest and most other team riders picking up a title somewhere. Thanks to them for their continued support - keep a look out for the Team SAS logo on their boards!

SAS DVD FOR SAS DVD FOR SPONSORSSPONSORSJust by living we all have an impact on our water environment. You as individuals have already shown your support by joining SAS, but businesses too have the chance not only to show their commitment to protecting liquid life, but also to become visible supporters of the campaign. SAS do not make hollow promises; we deliver the goods and affect change at ground level. For the fi rst time SAS have made a DVD for sponsors that highlights all the campaign and education action from 2004, the events we were involved with and the ball - it tells the story of SAS in 2004 and ways in which sponsors can help support the organisation. So as members, if you know of any businesses that might like to support your favourite organisation (!) then let us know who they are, what they do and how to contact them and we’ll send them a DVD and a sponsors pack.Any businesses that strike up a partnership with SAS as a result of your input we’ll send you a cool prize as a thank you!

A POEM FROM A POEM FROM AN ECOGROMAN ECOGROMSAS Eco-grom Rhys Lloyd from Saudi Arabia recently saw his school put a poem of his forward for a competition with 30,000 entrants. Rhys’s poem entitled ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ has now been been selected to be published in a book for young writers called’Great Minds from Around the Globe’. He is very proud of his achievement and so are we - but he also hopes his poem will reach a wider audience and highlight some of the problems our blue planet faces across the world. Here’s his poem:

Surfers Against Sewage Came to countryWith hope of blue seaBig waves with wildlifeAnd land with green treesWhen we arrived ourHopes were shatteredLife was bad-nothing mattered. Here lay sewage all alone out at seaWe just wanted peaceAnd a space where we could be freeTo do what we pleaseIn wavy clear oceans not murky water or fl oating debris.

JUST ADD WATER were our other merchandise heroes of 2004. They have sold a phenomenal number of SAS hoodies and T-shirts through their stores, at no profi t to themselves. Their tremendous support has raised at least another £5000 for SAS and this is money that our campaign would never have seen without them. JUST ADD WATER have been valuable sponsors of SAS for a few years now, but this is the fi rst time that they have helped us by selling our gear. They have undergone some changes lately but we are very hopeful that they will continue to support us in this way in 2005. Watch this space for details!

Other helpful sponsors selling our stuff for us are: Extremepie.com, Wipeout (Truro), TYF Adventures, and Capernwray Dive and Leisure. All do so at no profi t to themselves.

SHOP PLANS FOR 2005

NEWS FROM THE SHOPNEWS FROM THE SHOP

I know these words are being read by most of the mob out there that support us brilliantly throughout the year by using the catalogue and on-line shop, so this is my chance to say thanks to you! You certainly kept Heidi and Kate busy last year! So busy in fact that we have had to take on an extra part-time person to help us (Claire Bentley). This year we want to actually SEE more of you, so we are smartening up our little warehouse here at Wheal Kitty. When you are in the area please pop in! We will fl og you some bargains..... see you then!

We made a number of changes to the Summer Ball last year to make it a really safe and green place to enjoy our biggest fundraising party of the year and it resulted in another resoundingly successful event.

2005 SAS BALL2005 SAS BALL15TH ANNIVERSARY15TH ANNIVERSARY

Thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the Ball Questionnaire. We’ve had some really positive feedback and some great suggestions - look out for some exciting new developments at this year’s extra special 15th anniversary SAS Ball! The Ball will be on Friday 2nd September this year and tickets will remain at the 2004 price of £35. Priority will be given to ticket orders received by post using the order form in the next issue of Pipeline. Orders can be submitted by post as soon as you receive your next issue of Pipeline at the beginning of May. Telephone orders will not be taken until Wednesday June 8th.

To further reduce the environmental impact of the Ball we will be expanding the free bus service to and from the Ball site. Last year there were 2000 cars on site which means that many people were travelling in cars alone and weren’t car-sharing or using the free bus. We will have buses travelling from several different towns in Cornwall (including Truro for national connections) and we urge you to use them or share cars wherever possible. To encourage this and help fund the green transport alternative there will be a ‘green tax charge’ on car parking at the Ball site this year, whereas taking the bus won’t cost the Earth literally or fi nancially!

Improved security helped keep the number of gatecrashers down last year and we have plans to tighten up even more to stop blaggers in their tracks! So anyone out there who is planning their sob story for this year it won’t wash as there will be zero tolerance regarding wristbands that are broken or tampered with. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Look forward to seeing you there!

DONAVON FRANKENREITER DONAVON FRANKENREITER HELPS OUT SASHELPS OUT SAS

For those of you who haven’t heard of Donavon, he was one the coolest surfers doing the craziest surfi ng when I was growing up (more than 10 years ago now). He still is one of the coolest surfers and now he is also one of the coolest musicians with a soft and soulful voice and some beautiful songs to his name. His style is his own but if you like Jack Johnson and Ben Harper - cool, mellow guitar music - then you will love his stuff.

His fi rst and only UK gig was sold out within 2 hours of been announced. On Monday 3rd October, Donavon scored fun 3ft waves on a borrowed 1970’s single fi n, scoring the barrel of the session, then hit the packed Blue Bar at Porthtowan in Cornwall and performed his fantastic self-titled album. The atmosphere was really

We have been deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and displacement of thousands of people from their homes following the Asia Tsunami Disaster.SAS campaign for clean, safe recreational waters free from pollution in the UK and Europe and sadly as a consequence are not best equipped to deal on the ground with disasters of this kind.If you are interested in helping to support relief efforts in the disaster zone we would recommend you only support established non-profi t making organisations or charities. One such organisation is our friends at Surf Aid International who are working hard in the Mentawai Islands to provide emergency medical teams and medical supplies. It is estimated that up to 10,000 people in the Surf Aid operating region of Nias have been displaced by the Tsunami disaster. You can support their efforts by visiting www.surfaidinternational.org

intimate and the crowd with cries of “one more, one more” wouldn’t let him leave the stage until he fi nished on a great cover of ‘All Along the Watchtower’. The sell out gig included a donation to Surfers Against Sewage, a cause that is close to Donavon’s heart. He loves the water and that he could help SAS out - not just with the gig but with raising awareness on his travels. Donavon was stoked to be asked to be part of TEAM SAS and feels honoured to help keep our beautiful coastline clean.

Again we should thank SW1 Productions for all their hard work to get Donavon to the UK and lets hope they can keep up the good work in 2005. Donavon’s album “Donavon Frankenreiter” is out now. For further info on Donavon, please check his website www.donavonf.com
