• TheTRG-002allowsGenIVGMV8engineswiththe58Xcrankshafttriggerwheelandthe4Xcamshafttiminggeartobeinstalledinearliervehiclesdesignedtoacceptthe24Xcrankshafttriggerwheelandthe1Xcamshafttriggerwheelwithouthavingtotaketheengineaparttochangethecamshafttiminggearorthecrankshaftreluctorwheel.ExamplesincludeinstallingaLS7CorvetteorLS3Corvetteengineina1997-2005Corvetteora1998-2002CamaroorFirebird.

• EarlyGenIVV8enginesusethissame24Xreluctorwheelbutthenhavethecamshaftpositionsensormountedinthetimingcoverandhaveasingletoothcamshaftreluctorbuiltintothetiminggear.
• ThenewerGenIVV8enginesusea58Xcranktriggerwheel(60evenlyspacedteethwith2missingteeth)andafourtoothreluctorbuiltintothetiminggear.
• TheTRG-002takesthesignalsfromthe58XbasedenginesandconvertsthemtowhatthePCMorECMfor24Xbasedenginesareexpectingtosee.Thisallowsthenewer58Xenginestobeinstalledinoldervehiclesthatoriginallyhad24Xengines.
• TheTRG-002isdesignedtoconnecttothestockcrankshaft(CKP)&camshaft(CMP)positionsensorsonaGenIVV8engineequippedwitha58Xcrankshaftreluctoranda4Xcamshaftreluctor(timing gear).
• The58XCKPsensor(GMpart#12585546)isgrayincolorandhasadifferentconnectorkeythanthe24XCKPsensor.
• The24XCKPsensor(GMpart#12560228)isblackincolorandwillNOTworkwiththe58Xcrankshaftreluctor,soyoucannotusethesensorfromyourexistingGenIIIV8engine.
• Mostcrateenginesorenginesremovedfromothervehiclesshouldalreadyhavethecorrectsensorsinstalledbutitisimportantthatyouchecktobesure.
• Thecamshaftsensormountedinthefronttimingcoverusedonthe1Xandthe4Xtiminggearsisthesameforeithergear(GMpart#12585545).
• SomeearlyGenIVV8engineshavethe24Xcrankshaftreluctorandthe1Xcamshaftreluctor(timinggear).IfyouareusingoneoftheseearlierGenIVenginesinyourLS1,LS6orotherGenIIIV8equippedvehiclethenyouDONOTneedtheTRG-002triggerconversionmodule.SeeTable1onpages12and13forinformationonwhatmakeandmodelyearvehicleshavewhattypeofcrankshaftreluctorwheel.Besuretogobythevehiclemodelyear(inyourowner’smanualorindicatedbythe10thdigitofyourVIN).Donotusethemanufacturingdatetodeterminemodelyear.

• The“CrankIn”and“CamIn”labelsontheTRG-002refertosensorsignal“In”fromthesensorsontheengineand“CrankOut”and“CamOut”labelsrefertothesignal“Out”fromtheTRG-002tothevehicle’sECMorPCM.
• 58Xenginesuse5voltsensorsignalsand24Xenginesuse12voltsensorsignalsforthecamshaftandcrankshaftsensors.TheTRG-002supplies5voltsensorpowerforthe58Xcamandcranksensorsandprovides12voltsensorbasedsignalstotheECM.• Thismeansthevoltagemeasuredonthe“CrankIn”and“Cam
In”wiresshouldbe5voltsignalsandthevoltagemeasuredonthe“CrankOut”and“CamOut”wiresshouldbe12voltsignals.
• InadditiontousingtheTRG-002toadaptthecamshaftandcrankshaftsensorsignals,youwillalsoprobablyneedtochangeconnectors,obtainadapterharnessesand/orchangepartsinordertousetheinjectors,MAPsensorand/orMAFsensoronthenewerengines(seetheOptionalItemslistonpage1forsomeexamples).ContactLPEoryourLPEdistributorformoredetailedpartsrecommendations.
• ThefactoryPowertrainControlModule(PCM)orEngineControlModule(ECM)willneedtobereprogrammedinordertoproperlyrunthenewengineduetothedifferentenginecharacteristicsincluding:enginedisplacement,injectorsize,sparkrequirementchanges,MAPandMAFsensortype,RPMrange,throttlesize,etc.ReprogrammingtoolsareavailablefromLPEormanycompaniesoffercustomprogrammingservicesandchassisdynamometertuningservices.
• Somevehiclesmayneedahigherflowfuelpumpinordertoprovidethecorrectamountoffuelforthenewengine.ContactLPEoryourLPEdistributorforfuelpumprecommendations.
• Oncamshaftphaserequippedengines(L92etc.)youwillneedtoswitchtoanon-camshaftphasercamshaft,timinggearandtimingcover.
• TheTRG-002hasnotbeentestedinlatemodel24X8.1Ltruckengineapplications.• TheTRG-002iscurrentlyNOTdesignedtoworkonthefrontwheeldriveGMV8applicationssuch
astheChevroletImpalaSS,ChevroletMonteCarloSS&PontiacGrandPrixGTP.• Importantinformationregardingsparkplugwiresandsparkplugs:
• Aswithmostin-vehicleelectronics,LPErecommendstheusenoisesuppressionignitionwiresandresistortypesparkplugswiththiselectroniccontrolunit.

Installation:• Disconnectthenegativebatteryterminal.• Connecttheblackwiretoasuitablechassisground.
• Goodgroundlocationsincludethefrontorthebackofacylinderhead(seearrowinimagetotheright)oroneoftheexistingvehiclechassisgrounds.
• Forthecylinderheadandother10mmgroundbolts,usethesupplied10mmringterminal.
• Forthefirewallgroundstudandother6mmgroundbolts,usethesupplied6mmringterminal.
• Inordertoprovideareliablegroundconnection,thesuppliedringterminalsareacrimpstyleterminalwithbuiltinsolderandadhesivefilledshrinktubing.Toproperlyinstallaringterminal:• Stripthewire1/2”• Makesurethewireisproperlyseatedandcrimptheterminalbarrel(the1/4”ofthebarrel
closesttotheterminalend)usinganinsulatedconnectorcrimpingtoolnestthatmatchesthecolororgaugeoftheterminal.Donotcrimpthesoldersleeve.
• Applyheatevenlyaroundthelengthofthetubing(includingthecrimparea)untilthetubingfullyrecoversandtheadhesiveflows.Inordertoheattheconnectorevenlyitisrecommendedthatyouuseaheatgunandnotanopenflamesuchasalighter.
• Continuedistributingtheheatoverthesoldersleeveuntilthesolderflowsintotheterminalbarrel.RemovetheheatandletcoolfortheUltimateconnection.
• Connecttheredwiretoanignitionswitched12VDCsource.• Ifyouareconnectingtoaswitch12VDCsourcethatisnotfused,installa5ampfuse• Potentiallocationsfora12VDCswitchedsourceincludetheunderhoodfusepanelorthedriver
orpassengersidefootwellfusepanels• Installthesuppliedhightemperatureconvolutedloomovertheredandblackwiresmakingsureto
routethewiresawayfromanysourcesofheatormovingparts.Securetheloomasneeded.• ConnecttheharnesslabeledCAMOUTtotheconnectorontheenginewiringharnessthatwas
connectedtothecamshaftsensorconnector• OnGMGenIIIV8engineequippedvehicles(1997-2004C5Corvette,1998-2002Camaro,2004
GTO,2003-2004SSR,1999-2006CKtrucksetc.)theCAMOUTconnectorontheTRG-002connectsdirectlytothefactoryharnessconnectionthatwasatthebackoftheengine.• NOTE-makesureyoudoNOTconnecttheCRANKINconnectortothemanifoldair
pressure(MAP)sensor.TheCRANKINconnectoristhesameastheMAPsensorconnector.AlsomakesureyoudoNOTconnecttheCRANKOUTtotheMAPsensorharnessconnector.Althoughthetwowon’tconnectnormally,youcouldforcethemtogether.
• OnearlyGMGenIVV8engineequippedvehiclesthatusetheE40ECM(2005C6Corvette,2005-2006GTO,2005-2006SSR,2006TrailblazerSSetc.)theCAMOUTconnectorontheTRG-002 MUSTbeconnectedtothe“TRG-002CamOut”labeledconnectoronthesuppliedcamshaftoutputadapterharness(L480145305)andthentheadapterharnessconnectstothefactorycamshaftconnectorharnesslocationnearthefrontoftheengine.See the Addendum For E40 Controlled Vehicles on pages 8 and 9 for connecting the adapter harness on these vehicles.
• ConnecttheharnesslabeledCAMINtothecamshaftsensoronthefronttimingcover.NOTE-thisshouldconnectdirectlytothesensorandnottotheintermediateharnessattachedtotheoutsideofthetimingcover.Seetheimageatthebottomofpage11forfurtherclarification.
• ConnecttheharnesslabeledCRANKOUTtotheconnectorontheenginewiringharnessthatwasconnectedtothecrankshaftsensorconnector(onthesideoftheengineblock).• Be careful to make sure you have this secured such that it does not get close to the exhaust.
You may want to put a heat protective sleeve or heat shield over the harness connectors, especially if you have aftermarket exhaust manifolds on the vehicle.
• ConnecttheharnesslabeledCRANKINtothecrankshaftpositionsensoronthesideoftheblock.• Depending on your installation you may also want to put a heat sleeve or heat shield over
the wiring harness and connector, especially if you have aftermarket exhaust manifolds.• SecuretheTRG-002moduleusingthesuppliedhookandlooptapeorusingthesuppliedself-
tappingscrews.• Mountinglocationwarnings/recommendations:
• TheTRG-002isdesignedtowithstandsimilartemperaturestothefactoryECM/PCM.Careshouldbetakentomakesureitismountedinalocationthatdoesnotexposeittotemperaturesinexcessof250degreeF(120degreeC).
• Do not place the module in direct exposure to hot exhaust manifolds or other exhaust system components.
• If the unit will be in the line of site of exhaust system components make sure it is far away from the components and has a heat shield protecting it.
• Do not mount directly to the engine.• Make sure all of the harness wires are clear of the exhaust and properly heat shielded.• Make sure all of the harness wires are clear of any moving components (engine accessory
drive etc.).• Reconnectthenegativebatteryterminal.

• BlinkingGREENindicatesnocamshaftsignalinwithacranksignaldetected• Theengineshouldstartbutyoumaysometimeshavetocranktheengineforalongtime
beforeitstarts.YoumostlikelydonothaveapropercamshaftsensorsignalintotheTRG-002.Checkcamshaftsensorconnectionsandwiringpin-outs.
• TheECM/PCMshouldsetacamshaftsensorDTC.• BlinkingRED RED RED GREEN(threeredblinksfollowedbyagreenblink)indicatesthe
TRG-002lostcranksynchronizationandrecovered• Usuallyduetoelectricalnoiseorbadsensor/wiring.
• BlinkingGREEN GREEN GREEN RED(threegreenblinksfollowedbyaredblink)indicatesalossofcamshaftsignal.• Usuallyduetoelectricalnoiseorbadsensor/wiring.
• TheTRG-002willblinkeitherofthesetwolasterrorcodesonthethree(3)powerupcyclesaftertheproblemoccurs.Iftheerrordoesnotoccuragainduringthosethreepowerupsthenthecodewillclear.Ifanothercodeoccurspriortothecodeclearing,theoldercodewillbeclearedandthenewcodewillbestoredanddisplayed.
Troubleshooting:• IftheTRG-002REDLEDdoesnotcomeonwhenyouturnontheignition,checkthepowerand
groundwireconnections(redandblackwires).NoREDLEDindicatesnopowertotheTRG-002.
• Theproduction24Xenginecrankshaftandcamshaftharnesspowerfeedsare12VDC.Onkey-onyoushouldbeabletomeasure12VDCbetweenpowerandgroundpinsfromtheengineharnessforthecrankshaftandcamshaftsensors.
• TheoutputfromtheTRG-002(forthe58Xtypesensors)is5VDC.• Theharnesswirecolorsandsignals/voltagesarelabeledinthewiringdiagramsfoundonpage

• IfyouareexperiencingerraticoperationandintermittentdiagnosticlightsfromtheTRG-002itmaybeduetoelectricalnoise/interference.• TryreroutingtheTRG-002harnessand/orrelocatingtheTRG-002itselfawayfromhighvoltage
ignitionrelatedcomponents(sparkplugwires,coilsetc.)• Someaftermarketsparkplugwireshavebeenfoundtocauseelectronicinterference.Wehighly
recommendusingsparkplugwiresthatprovideOEMlevelsofnoisesuppression(thelowestresistancewireisNOTthebestwire)andthatyouuseresistortypesparkplugs.Ifyouarehavingintermittentproblemstryswitchingtostockoranotherbrandofsparkplugwirestoseeiftheproblemgoesaway.
• IfyouaregettingpowertotheTRGandtheenginecranksoverbuttheenginedoesn’tstart,checkthefollowing:• Makesuretheenginedoesn’talreadyhavea24xreluctorwheelanda1xtiminggear.• Makesuretheenginedoesn’thaveanincorrectcombinationofparts.
• 24xcrankreluctorwheelwith4xtiminggear.• 58xcrankreluctorwheelwith1xtiminggear.
• ChecktoseeiftheTRG-002isoutputtinganengineRPMsignal.Itshouldshowuponthedashinyourtachometerorwhenviewedwithascantool.IfnoRPMisshownthentheTRGisnotoutputtinganRPMsignal.
• Doyouhavefuelpressure.• Useanoidlightandasparkplugsimulatortocheckifyouaregettingsparkandinjectorpulse.• WhatRPMisthestarterabletoachieve.Theminimumsynchronizationenginespeedis60
RPM.Yourstartermustbeabletogettheenginespeedto60RPMorhigherinorderfortheTRG-002tooutputasignalandfortheenginetostart.

WARNING - failure to use the supplied adapter harness or failure to wire the adapter harness correctly can result in voltage being applied to the incorrect terminals to the TRG-002 and can cause failure of the TRG-002. Damage to the TRG-002 due to incorrect wiring is NOT covered under warranty.
E40equippedvehiclesusetheGMGenIVV8enginesbuttheseenginesstillhavethe24XcrankgearfoundontheGenIIIengines.Thecamshaftpositionsensorismovedtothefronttimingcoveronthesevehicles(justlikethenewer58Xengines)exceptthetiminggearhasa1XreluctorwithasingletoothresultinginthesamesignalpatternasthecamshaftmountedreluctorfoundontheGenIIIengines.
OntheGenIVV8Corvette,Trailblazer,SSR&otherS/Tplatformvehicles,thereisajumperharnessattachedtothetimingcoverthatconnectsthecamsensortotheengineharness(seeimageonpage9).OntheE40equipped2005-2006PontiacGTOandHoldenHSVvehiclestheengineharnessconnectsdirectlytothecamsensorandnosuchjumperharnessexistsontheengines.Becauseofthisdifferenceinfactorywiring,theconnectionfromtheTRG-002tothefactoryharnessisdifferentbetweenthesetwoapplications.
OnE40equippedvehiclestheincludedE40TRGcamshaftoutputadapterharness(L480145305)mustbeusedbetweentheTRG-002CamOutandthevehicle’sengineharness.Thesuppliedcamshaftadapt-erharnesshasaconnectoralreadyinstalledononeendthatplugsintotheTRG-002CamOutconnector.The“EngineHarnessCamE40”endhassealedterminalsthatneedtobeinstalledintotheappropriateconnectorforyourvehicleapplication.• Twoconnectorsareincludedwiththeextensionharness.Seetheimagesanddiagramsonpage7to
