Its Christmas! Time again and the weather has already had a visit by Jack Frost and maybe even Mr Snow at some point for another white Christmas. The Cleveleys lights are shining so enjoy the festivities across this great town and support our local shops for all the things you need. Scouts geared up with new minibus Freemasons from Thornton and Clev-eleys Lodge got into top gear when they heard that a local scout group who are near neighbours to their West Drive, Cleveleys, base, needed a bit of extra assistance to raise funds for a much needed minibus.

The Masons were so impressed when they heard from lodge member Paul Joyce, who is also the treasurer of 2nd Clev-eleys St Andrews Scout Group; about all the activities the scouts had got involved in to raise cash for the minibus that they sent off an appeal to their West Lancashire Charity fund. As a result a cheque for £2,600 arrived to make up the short-fall from the scout’s target figure of £10,000 for their minibus. As an added bonus another lodge member Darren Shillito, boss at Karl Smith Car Sales, apart from giving another £250 to the scouts fund, sourced the minibus, had it sign written with the scouts St Andrews crest and will see to it that the minibus gets its annual servicing done as part of the pack-age.

The Masons heard that St Andrews scouts had raised £7,400 in an amazing number of ways some of them quite unique. Topping the list must be a parachute jump done by St Andrews secretary Janine Webster who is blind but man-aged to raise £1,378.10 (!) for the scouts. Her son is a bea-ver scout in the group. Janine McNeil who is a mother to a scout and a young leader ran in the London Marathon and raised £180 for her efforts. There were also all manner of race nights and beetle drives and Bob-a-Job and magic shows, Christmas fairs and bag packing to swell the funds. Wyre Youth Council donated £1,000 and Julia Culshaw, manager of Tesco Cleveleys whose store is another near neighbour of the scouts donated £500 from Tesco Community Projects. At the handover of the minibus Group Scout leader, Don Ashworth, told Terry Hudson, Freemasons’ Assistant Provin-cial Grand Master how delighted he was that the culmination of all the efforts of fund raising had at last come to pass and he thanked everyone who had taken part for their contributions and unstinting hard work.

Morans The Jewellers Peter Ainsworth age 55 married with two grown up children, trained with the prestigious Preston's of Bolton and Watches of Switzerland. He started at Morans in 1976 and took over ownership in 1990, apart from working as a jeweller during the day he has become a well known pianist in the area and has recorded two piano albums which are on sale in the shop. With proceeds donated to the local NSPCC, these album sales have raise thousands of pounds. Hobbies include passing on his musical and performing talents to youngsters by teaching piano and singing. One of the longest reining shopkeepers on Red Bank Road is celebrating 40years in the jewellery trade. One of the very few jewellers in the area if any, undertaking reasonably priced watch repairs on the premises. Peter said “Please feel free to call in or phone me for expert and honest advice whatever your requirements, personal and friendly service is not a thing of the past here at Morans”.
