Most enterprise data is stored in non-spatial enabled systemsMost enterprise data is stored in non-spatial enabled systems

Non-spatial business systems: administrative, research, environmental enterprise-wide systems

You need thematic maps showing the spatial relations

Multi stake holder, watershed-wide management plans require a common architecture for coordination

RAD - Key CharacteristicsRAD - Key Characteristics• Enables rapid cross program display and query• EPA enterprise data resource (direct connect and web

services)• Water program databases remain unchanged (retain existing

program ownership)• Care and feeding of NHD and events

• NHD/NHDPlus refresh every 3 years to date• One comprehensive migration/synchronization of existing

events to fit new NHD• During interim period, occasional indexing/re-indexing of

events using latest source locations from specific program databases

• Custom shapes where NHD does not exist

Pesticide Risk AssessmentsPesticide Risk Assessments

The EPA Office of Pesticide Programs is exploring the use of the NHDPlus and value-added attributes in a variety of applications related to pesticide risk assessments.

In this example, NHD navigation tools are combined with the NLCD and NHD catchments to estimate the direct and indirect effects of agricultural pesticide use on endangered aquatic species.

Assessing Recovery Potential of Impaired Waters

Assessing Recovery Potential of Impaired Waters

Recovery potential: the likelihood of an impaired water to re-attain Water Quality Standards, given its ecological capacity to regain lost functions, its exposure to stressors, and its social context.

Opportunity to consider landscape factors related to recovery potential within drainage areas and stream corridors, using GIS.
