Linoleum PrintingReduction Print

Reduction printing is a method used in relief printmaking, most commonly with wood or linoleum blocks. In relief prints, cuts are made into the flat surface of the block and ink is then rolled across the surface. Any area that is not cut away will pick up the ink, but the ink will not go down into the cut lines.

In reduction printing, a multi-color print is created using only one block by cutting away more and more of the surface in-between each color printing. Generally, colors are built up from light to dark, and depending on the opacity of the ink the underlying colors may influence the tone of the colors printed over them

What does an abstraction of Nature Look like?

In order to answer that, let’s take a look at the 3 main types of art

All 2-D and 3-D artwork can be placed in one of three categories or “forms”:

•Abstract

•Non- Objective (non-representational)

Realistic/ Representational

Subcategories under representational art include Realism, Impressionism, Idealism, and Stylization. All of these forms of representationalism represent actual subjects from reality. Although some of these forms are taking steps toward abstraction, they still fall under the category of

representation.

The often misunderstood type of art known as abstraction aims to take subjects from reality but present them in way that is different from the way they are viewed in our reality. This may take the form of emphasizing lines, shapes, or colors that transform the subject. Abstract art includes the subcategories of Minimalism, Cubism. Abstraction can also happen when the artist decides to view the subjects in a non- traditional manner.

Often mistaken for Abstract art although it is entirely different

from it. The intent of Non-objective art uses the elements

and principles of art in a way that results in a visually stimulating

work.

What can you do to make something from the natural world abstract?

Simplify the subject with lines/shapes

Think about textures and patterns that natural objects have and use those to create an aesthetically pleasing design

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

• Create a reduction print based on the theme: Abstraction of Nature (or Natural Abstraction?)

• Find reference photos on the laptops. Use to create sketches or EMAIL ME PHOTOS etonon@psd202.org

• It is called a reduction print because you will be carving away more and more of your linoleum block as you print more colors

Linoleum Reduction Printing

• Reduction Print:In a reduction print the artist develops all colors from the same block. For each color pass the artist removes more material from the block. Each color in printed on top of the previous.

• Step 1- Sketch 3 ideas (get sketch approved)-30 pts COLOR IN THE DESIGN YOU WILL BE USING IN FULL COLOR

• Step 2-Draw/ Trace Image onto Linoleum (use tracing paper to transfer image to linoleum)

• Step 3- Trace image with Sharpie- Color in the white (negative) space

Step 4- Carve out white/negative space In this three-color image of a sunflower the background is white, the color of the

paper. The first step, then, is to carve away all the areas that will remain white.

Step 5- Print 1st Color (lightest color)

When the carving is complete, print the first color, in this case, yellow.

PRINT 10 Copies

Clean and wash your linoleum block and clean up your work area

.

• Step 6- Color in the areas that are to remain yellow (with pencil) on your block

• While all of the printed sheets are drying, clean off the block and carve away all the areas that will remain yellow.

• Step 7- Carve away “1st color” areas (ex: yellow)

• Step 8- Print 2nd color (green)

When the carving is complete and the prints are dry enough, print the second color, green, on all the prints.

• PRINT 10 Copies on top of your 1st run (your first 10 prints)Clean and wash your linoleum block and clean up your work area.

• Step 9- Carve away the areas that will remain “2nd color” Clean off the block, carve away all the areas that will remain green.• Step 10- Print Final Color- Black

Once all the prints are dry, sort them, discarding any individual prints that have significant errors of registration or color. As a final step, sign and number the edition

• Repeat Steps 7-10 until you have printed all the colors• Turn in your best print and fill out a self-assessment • I will demo this process for you on Monday/Tuesday.
