instant citythesis
upon the maturity of a bee hive, a colony undergoes swarming and abandons a seemingly perfect home to spawn a new colony. there is a real time limit set onto the optimisation of a beehive.
this point of optimisation comes at the very instant whereby the colony is unable to sustain itself.
the interest is thus in the processes of hive building known as stigmergy, where bees and wasps are known to leave signs in their environment for others to sense and determine their subsequent actions.
this thesis is precisely at the inchoate stage of building. an ‘instance’ in the snapshot of time.
the qualities of inchoate architecture does simply mean a linearly reductive state from that of permanent architecture.
inchoate architecture must embody intelligence, able to communicate to users by its very behavioral ecology to evolve, on top of its ability to resist optimisation.
they must be able to incentivise continual stigmergy.
through an abstraction in the building processes of a hexagonal hive, a study of plastic straws and its elastic abilities is documented as a basic building block. the definition of a cell and wall is
reinterpreted as a key tectonic element of this architecture. finally, a simulation is run to demonstrate a possibility of the resultant form and spaces when they come together to form
an ‘instant’ city.
the obsidian . taichung culture centrecompetition

the taichung cultural centre aims to fuse a prefectural library and a museum into an iconic building that anchors the entrance to the new park masterplan.
the design seeks to maximise the possibilities of human interaction and knowledge accumulation, that is the very key of culture.
addressing the setback and massing, a gently twisting quadrilateral creates a terrace that becomes both a giant amphitheatre and a library strip that is accessible on every level. the entry is designed for the users to arrive right in the middle of this twisting.
on the outward side, the twisting form results in a cavernous cantilever forming the entrance gesture. finished in white polished terracotta. it becomes an iconic land art amidst the new greenery.
the museum is tucked in the relatively tranquil of the half basement, giving an impression of exploring a subterranean cavern of this large obsidian.

the design of this mosque is centred on the drama of the dome - a centralistic structure that hints at the perfection of geometries of the
heavens. it is a critique that the dome should be an phenomenological experience
rather than an iconic one viewed from afar.
a rigorous design process of rotating lines on an arch resulted in the final design that crosses 12 star shaped arches into a central occulus.
the facade is composed of a series of beak shaped squares that function as natural lighting and monsoon windows, negating the need for facade decoration and glass facades. here, function and geometric ornament is
attained.
the notion that a mosque is a public square is further expressed from full access from all sides, the ancilliary spaces are kept out of view on the
highest level.

the project seeks to reinvent the relationship of path and water in the context of a park.
through a study of yard strings, a consistent strand of material is achieved in varying proportions through the length of the waterway. when the strands go under knots, they become mounds. when they intertwine, they form junctions. when they flatten out, they become play courts. when they splinter out, they form bridges and boardwalks. different proportions of material compositions form different landscapes for use.
in this interweaving movement, the intermingling human traffic and flora create a never ending peripethetic experience and an ever evolving ecology. paths and water do not seem separate anymore.

bmw is seeking to build the first and largest regional centre in japan odaiba, and wants to find an unique japanese solution to fuse with its
stringent corporate identity of the bmw series and the mini.
a zoning plan was first created to display the flagship bmw and mini at the edge, separated by a subtle walking path that brings users to every
part of the complex. the creation of a townscape within a giant roof.
the aesthetics of katsura palace was referred to, of layering of planes as structural walls, the long eaves hinting to a horizon, and the disciplined
rational positioning of spaces into smaller volumes.

from a distance, ‘house’ invokes a atavistic image of a barn house.
concrete boxes are placed at opposing corners suspending the 2 barn houses allowing for a generous open plan.
the open plan spills out into the lush greens where the owner’s 3 children enjoy ample play space.
the greens are enveloped by soft whistling bamboo groves which provide the serenity of a reposeful home.
the boyish jet black sophistication of 10 year old cameron, the girlish maplewoods of 9 year old princess anusha, the imperturbable lines of 11 year old sophie, the rustic sensitivity of the owner frances. each room is incribed with
a very personal space bespoke by differences in materiality.
the house is touched by the generosity and love of the owner to provide a rich growing up experience for her chil-dren newly settled in singapore.
it does not pretend to be something else.

domescape is a series of installations revolving around the domic shape as seen through the eyes of a child.
using the telescope as an apparatus, the child would be able to see beyond the dome as a mere insitutional
symbol but a reimagination of shapes and forms.
at the rear garden the children will be invited to draw their own perspectives and creations, participating in
the co-creation of endless domic imageries,
the interior is conceived as a surrealist landscape where everyday dome shaped objects are hung amidst
streams of playful spots and a ‘cloudy ‘ceiling.

the atelier office of a bespoke clothing line wants a look that is finely crafted, a traditional english tailor vibe.
the 2 storey building is first opened up in the middle for a double volume atrium, creating a building within a building atmosphere.
completely crafting all the black steel members, the sliding doors, openable top hung windows, railings, hangers, wall panels,
the thinness and intricacy of metal detailing is experimented and brought out as sleek black lines set upon basswood plywood.

the house the client bought oversees the skyline of tokyo roppongi, but the previous layout was piecemeal and not fitting of the city view.
the new layout was conceived for a clear demarcation of private and public, a iridescent black aluminium panel that reflects the colours of the sky is used as the wall panel.
the public is treated with grey and black tones to reflect the sophistication, whilst the private spaces carry the warmth of linens and walnut.
the public circulation has full frontage of the night skyline along the long corridor, giving the suite its luxurious setting it deserved.

the client worked for 17 years in a leading japanese clothing line before setting up his own label and decided its flagship in singapore.
the shop must encompass the spirit of serious business suits and shoes, yet as well as playful casualness which stems from his surfing hobby - a term he calls lifestyle dualism.
the design is intricately proportioned and disciplined, the knotty oak veneer and raw concrete becomes the backdrop for the rich colour palette of his collection.
lighting is hidden into the black steel hanger, and steel groovelines give a elegant rhythm to the wood.
the wall and ceiling are painted pale grey, bringing the lushness of the vegetation at the front and back into full experience.
the users can fully feel the tropical setting amidst a decidedly japanese aesthetic.

the client opened a japanese hamburg steak restaurant in singapore 2 years ago and business is not as good as his other yakiniku chain. the discussion yielded that
singaporeans generally are not receptive to minced steak as much as japanese do.
since a matter of taste is not something that can be addressed, the solution is to create an ambience that is conducive to dining and comfort, as well as privacy in this tight space.
the ceiling is painted black to give a sense of intimacy, wooden joists further demarcates the dining zone into smaller areas. in the relative darkness,
the lamps hung from copper pipes demarcate a private space.
there was much reaction against the plastic aesthetic of singapore buildership. so as much as possible everything is made with raw unfinished material;
sawn oak, tropical suar wood, destressed metal, black cement, rough edged wallpaper, copper pipes and antique shades are used liberally to create a warm dining ambience.

while conscientiously avoiding kitsche and stereotypes
here, traditional chinese architectural motifs are abstracted to create a new dimension in the interpretation of them.
the chinese screen is flattened, folded out and painted with two different colours on each side, resulting in a subtle colour transition as the viewer
traverse from one end of the shop to the other
the moongate is brutally truncated at a kinked corner that maintains an optical illusion that it is circular upon perpendicular viewing,
while curiously skewed on a frontal view
the courtyard plants a tree trunk punctuating into the ceiling, giving a curious scene in the triangular space for the client to conduct classes for children

food for thought is an upstart restaurant selling simple fares and fusion food for a good charitable cause.
the setting in the basement of botanic gardens meant an immersion into a veritable green heart which afforded big openings on all sides for the lushness to be felt.
at the very centre, a large expanse of ceiling is opened up for 3 cast concrete communal tables to be set,
within the table are planted a joyful splash of greens.
the overall choice of raw concrete, brick, unadorned white ceramic tile palette;tin cans modified into light fittings,
they reflect the unpretentious philosophy of the restaurant,
