Congratulations!
22• Your S-2 is designed to operate on 8-18 volts alternating current.
Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-currenttransformers are suitable; we recommend the TrainMasterCommand model railroad control system.
• DO NOT POWER YOUR S-2 WITH DIRECT CURRENT (DC). Damage tosensitive electronic components may occur.
• When you first power up your track, the S-2 will wait between 3and 8 seconds as it “listens” for digital language from theTrainMaster Command Base (available separately). When it’sdetermined that it’s on a conventional (nonCommand) railroad, the S-2’s headlight will illuminate and Railsounds will fire up. Atthis point, the S-2 is in neutral. (This occurs when placing the S-2on your railroad for the first time. Thereafter, it starts in forwardafter every three-second power interrupt.)
Note!
33 Move ‘em out!• Get your S-2 moving. Press the DIR button on your CAB-1 remote
or Lionel transformer. This sequences the Liontech Commandreverse unit (LCRU2) to the next operating state.
• Adjust track voltage until your S-2 moves at your desired speed.
33
Transformer operations
Place your S-2 on Lionel or Lionel-compatibleO gauge track.• With track power OFF, connect the locomotive tether between the
engine and tender. The six-pin tender plug connects with the six-pin receptacle on the locomotive. Connect the drawbar betweenlocomotive and tender.
11Running yourS-2 with a Lionel transformer
• The engine tether receptical is “keyed” to allow the harness to beplugged in only one way.
Note!
Power up your S-2 with your transformer.

Using your S-2 tender’s Electrocoupler in the non-Command environment
To use your S-2 tender’sElectrocoupler in the non-
Command environment, you must firstcouple a piece of rolling stock equipped
with Lionel magnetic couplers directlyto your S-2 tender’s rearElectroCoupler. The magnetic coupleron the rolling stock will then react to themagnetic field generated by a Lionelremote-control track section (availableseparately). Place your rolling stock’scoupler “trigger disc” over the centralcoil of a remote-control track sectionand press uncouple on the controller. The magnetic field pulls the disc down-ward, and the coupler opens.
Your S-2 tender’s Electrocoupler willNOT open manually or by using aremote-control track section

T o select a single operational state foryour Lionel S-2 (example: forward
only), you can deactivate the LCRU2’ssequencing function with the reverseunit control switch, located underneaththe cab of the S-2
Get your locomotive moving in thedesired direction, then slow it down
without stopping. Set the reverse unitcontrol switch to PROGRAM/LOCK.The S-2 is now “locked” into your cho-sen direction.
When you no longer want single-direction operation, just slide thereverse unit control switch back toFORWARD/ RUN.

Although Railsounds ispowered by track voltage, thebattery is required for uninter-rupted operation and shut-down sequences. Use onlyalkaline batteries.
Note!
Discontinue locomotivepower for 10 seconds beforechanging the RailsoundsON/OFF switch position.
Note!
If Railsounds “drops out”during track power inter-rupts (direction change),replace the battery.
Note!55
Your Lionel S-2 tender is equipped witha rear Electrocoupler that responds to
the COUPLER R (rear) button on yourCAB-1 remote when operated in theTrainmaster Command environment.Simply press R button on your CAB-1remote, and the coupler opens.

Your S-2’s Railsounds system—the basics
L ionel Railsounds is the most realisticmodel railroad sound system in the
world. Your S-2 featuresdigital sam-ples fromreal-life steamlocomotivesfor the ulti-mate in real-ism.
Begin by in-stalling a 9-volt alkalinebattery in thetender. Thisensures inter-ruption freeoperation of Railsounds. The battery islocated within the tender and to access ityou will need to remove the tender bodyfrom the frame. Begin by turning the ten-der over and remove one screw fromeach corner of the frame. Turn the tenderover and remove the tender body fromthe frame assembly. Snap the battery clipon to the battery and place it into the rearof the tender where the built in retainerwill hold it in place. Place the tenderbody back over the frame assembly mak-
ing sure that none of the wires arepinched between the frame and the
body, turn thetender backover and securetogether withthe four previ-ously removedscrews.
When youfirst apply trackpower, the S-2’sRailsounds sys-tem producessounds of thelocomotive atrest. As the S-2moves, turbine
“woosh” begins, increasing with thelocomotive’s speed. To silence the tur-bine “woosh” (whistle/bell are unaf-fected), slide the Railsounds switch, located on the bottom of the tender, tothe OFF position before powering up thelocomotive. The whistle is activated byusing the lever or button on your trans-former or CAB-1. The volume controlknob to raise or lower the level ofsound is located on the bottom of thetender.

W ith Railsounds, you experiencethe sounds of real railroading
like never before. Simply put, it’s themost sophisticated, authentic modelrailroad sound system in the world. And remember—inside your Lionel S-2 are the sounds of real-life steamengines. No other electric train canoffer you authentic S-2 sounds. That’sthe power of Lionel.
• Turbine “Woosh”. Your S-2 ’s trackspeed determines the speed of the“Woosh”. • MultiWhistleTM. Different whistlesevery time—a Railsounds exclusive.• Authentic bell. Press BELL on yourCAB-1 or transformer to begin the
effect, again to discontinue. Even thefinal “hit” is muted like the real thing.• Reverse unit reset sound. Powerdown your track, wait for 3.5 seconds, and listen for the air-release sound—that’s the S-2 telling you its LiontechCommand reverse unit has just reset toforward operation. • Shutdown sequence. No othermodel railroad sound system shutsdown like Railsounds. Turn off trackpower, and after the air-release resetsound, you have two seconds torestart your S-2 . If you’re done withoperations, Railsounds will com-mence with an authentic S-2 shut-down sequence about two secondsafter the air-release reset occurs.
Experiencing the range of your S-2’s Railsounds system
Notes on Railsounds• Use the volume control dial, located onthe bottom of the tender, to adjust soundoutput (see page 5).• Listen for incidental engine sounds dur-ing Railsounds operation. They’re auto-matic and, of course, authentic.• The 9-volt alkaline battery you installedensures continuous sounds, even duringshort track-power interrupts.
• Longer track-power interruptions(including locomotive derailments)cause Railsounds to shut down afterabout 7 seconds.• For even more authentic Railsoundseffects, operate your S-2 in theTrainMaster Command environment.See page 8 for details.
A steam turbine locomotive, unlike a conventional steam engine, makes a continuous “whoosh” sound when it’s operating, ratherthan a rythmic chuffing.

TrainMaster Command operations
Your S-2 in the TrainMaster Command environment
Lionel TrainMaster Command is thefun and sophisticated model railroad
control system from Lionel. Your S-2features the Liontech Commandreverse unit, which acts as both a con-ventional reverse unit as well as the keyto unlocking many extra features whenyou operate in Command mode.
TrainMaster Command gives you thepower to operate multiple Command-
equipped locomotives on the same track,at the same time. It’s the most fun youcan have with electric trains, and it’sincredibly easy too! Just follow thedirections below and you’ll be on yourway.
TO OPERATE IN COMMAND, YOU NEED A
COMMAND BASE AND A CAB-1 REMOTE.Find them both at your authorizedLionel retailer.
Place your S-2 on Lionel or Lionel-compatibleO gauge track.• Make sure track power is OFF before placing it on track.• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its communi-
cations wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lioneltransformer or the U on any of your installed PowerMasters.
• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (onPowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD).
22 Address your S-2 with CAB-1.
• Press ENG and 1 on the numeric keypad of your CAB-1 remote. This command is sent by CAB-1 to the Command Base, which thentranslates your command into digital code. That code is sentaround your railroad’s outside rails in the form of a digital “halo.”All Command-equipped Lionels listen to this digital communica-tion, but they do not respond until they hear their own ID number.
• The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not trackpower—controls the actions of Command-equipped Lionels. Trackpower is simply like gasoline in the tank of your car—it gives youthe power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where to go or howfast to get there.
• All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmed withan ID# of “1.” To change your S-2’s ID#, see page 12.
33 Move ‘em out!
• Throttle up or press any command button on CAB-1. Your S-2 willrespond to your every command. Read on. The fun is just beginning!

Tuning your S-2’s performance
MOMENTUMSimulate the labored performance of
a locomotive pulling a heavy load withmomentum. Press L, M, or H (locatedunder CAB-1’s removable panel) forlight, medium, or heavy momentum. The LCRU2 remembers the setting untilyou change it. For delayed response, use H. For quick response, choose L.
BOOSTING AND BRAKINGUse the BOOST and BRAKE com-
mand buttons for incremental controlof speed and a superior method for han-dling grades, stops-and-starts, andmore. Plus, using BRAKE in theCommand environment gives you abonus Railsounds effect—the ultrareal-istic sound of squealing brakes.
STALLMake your S-2 feel more respon-
sive by setting a “stall” voltage. Get your locomotive moving, then pressSET; the S-2 will stop. The headlightwill flash, indicating it’s in the SETmode. Turn the throttle clockwise toget the engine moving, then decreasespeed until the locomotive just stops.
Then press SET again; the LCRU2remembers the stall setting until youchange it. To clear stall, press SETtwice, holding it for one second eachtime.
HIGH VOLTAGE SETTINGPress SET, headlight will flash. Get
your locomotive moving to the maxi-mum speed you want it to run, pressBOOST. Use this to keep your locomo-tive from excess-speed derailing. Turnoff the high voltage setting by pressingSET, then BOOST, holding each for onesecond.
SOUND QUALITYTo achieve your preferred Rail-
sounds master volume level, use thevolume control dial located on thebottom of the tender. Turn the dial leftor right to adjust the volume to yourliking.
For quick remote-control of volumebelow the master setting—like mut-ing—use the CAB-1 numeric keypad’svolume control. Pressing AUX1 andthen 4 on the numeric keypad lowersoverall Railsounds output.
Your S-2’s digital communication antenna
Y our S-2 locomotive’s handrail ismore than scale detailing, it’s the
LCRU2’s antenna for receivingCommand Base digital communications.
If your S-2 is experiencing difficultyreceiving base communications, checkfor foreign metal objects between thehandrail and cab.
Note! These settings will be lost when you assign new engineID#s.
As your fleet of Command-equippedLionels grows, give your S-2 loco-
motive its own ID#. Choose from anybetween 1 and 99. Turn the CommandBase ON and place the locomotive ontrack. Power up, then slide the locomo-tive’s reverse unit control switch to PRO-GRAM.

Maintaining and servicing your S-2
1313
H elp your Lionel S-2 lead a long andproductive life on your railroad by
maintaining it properly. We recommend you purchase a
Lionel Lubrication and MaintenanceKit (no. 6-62927), available from yourLionel dealer. Two basic rules to keep inmind: never over-lubricate (a smallamount will do), and avoid gettinggrease or oil on the S-2’s wheels, contact
rollers, or your track. You’ll know your S-2 requires lubrica-
tion when visual inspection revealsdryness on the parts indicated in theillustration. Remove accumulated dirtand dust before lubricating, and alwayslubricate any locomotive emergingfrom prolonged storage. Also, lightlylubricate the S-2’s side rods after each10 hours of operation.

After 80 hours of operating time orafter extended periods of storage, apply one drop of oil to the small holein the die-cast motor casting, just belowthe field winding. After extended run-ning, the brushes may require replace-
ment. Sluggish or intermittent opera-tion are signs that brush replacement isdue. When removing the cab, take noteof the location of the plastic spacers. These must be replaced in the properlocation.

Y our S-2 is equipped with a smokegenerator that produces safe, clean
white smoke during operation. The smoke generator
requires the periodic addi-tion of Lionel smoke fluid inorder to function. Pierce thetube end with a pin, then addfour to eight drops of fluid directly intothe S-2’s stack. Smoke production willcommence momentarily, faster if you runyour S-2 at speed. When smoke produc-tion wanes, add more fluid (four to eight
drops). An idle S-2 will not smoke; press
AUX1 and 9 (press for a maxi-mum of 10 seconds) to engagethe smoke generator at idle/in
neutral. Always keep a small amountof smoke fluid in the S-2's smoke generator; the generator’selement can become damaged if operatedwithout fluid. Smoke production isgreater at higher voltages and when theS-2 is pulling a heavy load or long consist.
