My fellow LionsI would first like to congratulate the club and our members on our 7th Charter Anniversary. It has been an honour and a pleasure to be President for the year 2013-2014 and I thank all the members and their families for their valued support.
We have once again had a busy year and you may read all about it in the pages that follow in this brochure. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the various event committee members that helped with our fund raising events such as the Charity Walk, Viasakhi function and Diwali Mehfil evening and not forgetting those members that play a major role in our service activities such as Diabetic screenings, feeding the homeless program, collection of eye glasses and hearing aids and the considerable work we do with our youth.
Our club also completed our first ‘Twinning’ with Lions Club of Phuket Pearl in Thailand and I was proud to have initiated this.
I would like to wish our incoming President Lion Satpal Chana every success during his year and I can assure him that he will have my full support and help in any way I can.
Finally I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to my wife Rani and my children for their support and understanding of my Lionistic duties.
Have a lovely evening

The evening finished with Lion Brijesh being inducted as President for 2013-2014
The club combined their Handover evening in June 2013 with a golf day to raise funds for Cansupport.
The golf tournament was held during the day arranged by Lion Brijesh to raise funding for CanSupport, a Charity in India that he has been supporting for some years. CanSupport provides home care and palliative care to patients with cancer. As most people prefer the comfort of their home, when their cancer advances the Charity send teams of doctor’s nurses and counsellors to their homes in and around New Delhi to provide the care and support that they need.
A total of £4500 was raised on the day and below are some images of the day

Lions Club of Fairlop is very proud to announce our very first ‘Twinning’ with another Lions Club.
After several months of discussions the club are now twinned with:The ‘Lions Club of Phuket Pearl’ from Thailand
Our President Lion Brijesh has a personal friend who he met on a golf course in Thailand some years ago and it transpired he was also a Lion. He was also supposed to be President of his club in the same year as Lion Brijesh but due to unforseen circumstances this was not possible. However he together with Lion Brijesh were instrumental in finalising the Twinning which was made official in May this year at our business meeting. The current President of Phuket Pearl Lion Arnfinn Oines visited our club and our District Governor Lion Sarbjit Assi was also present to oversee proceedings.
We hope to develop relationships between our clubs in the years to come and it is hoped that some of our members will visit Thailand early next year.
Below are pictures of Fairlop President Lion Brijesh Chauhan and Phuket Pearl President Lion Arnfinn Oines completing the formalities in the presence of District Governor Lion Sarbjit Assi and members of Fairlop Lions Club
Dear Lion Brijesh, On behalf of Lions Club of Phuket Pearl I would like to extend our congratulations to Lions Club of Fairlop on your 7th Charter Anniversary and for the excellent work you are doing. We are very pleased to have the honour to twin our two clubs and look forward to great collaboration. Have an enjoyable eveningRegards, Lion Arnfinn PresidentLions Club of Phuket Pearl

Annual VaisakhiCharity Dinner & Dance 2014
This is our premier event of the year and held to raise monies to fund the eye camp we stage in India during February and March.
Our Lions organisation is a world leader in the prevention and cure of blindness and the Lions of Fairlop remain very committed to this cause. A few of our members every year travel to India at their own cost to help partake in this annual pilgrimage and deliver the funding that pays for the cataracts operations and supply of lenses and eye glasses.
The function was held at the City Pavilion with over 400 guests attending. We managed to raise £30000 and we must thank our very generous public for their support. These monies will go towards the Eye Camps to be held in 2015.
The club wishes to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the club’s organising committee who spent many hours over several months to put together a most enjoyable and successful event.
Some of the images of the evening are shown below.
Once again the Club held their annual Charity Walk at Lee Valley. Several other Lions Clubs and other organisations joined us for a wonderful day blessed with good weather and delicious food. As a club we raised £1650 towards good causes. Our District Governor was also present for a short while and is seen in photographs below with members of Fairlop Lions and the general public.

zone b EASTER EGG HUNT
& DUCK RACE
The Zone consists of four local Lions clubs who all worked together to organise a wonderful day for the children of our local community. The clubs participating were the Lions Clubs of Fairlop; Wanstead & Woodford; London Seven Kings; and Barking
Easter Monday April 21st 2014 saw the sun streaming down, on the second Zone B Duck Race and Easter Egg Hunt. The Mayor of Redbridge Cllr Felicity Banks joined members from the four local Lions Clubs, some Leos, the VDG Ramesh, Lion Ravina and ZC Paul for the event. Almost 80 disadvantaged children with their parents and carers descended on the Hargreaves Scout Camp for an afternoon of fun.
First point of call registration then over to the Craft Tables to enter the colouring competition, to decorate an Easter egg, draw pictures and complete word searches. The Leos organised the tattoos and soon almost every child and some adults had faces, arms and even legs tattooed with eggs, bugs and fairies.
When everyone was assembled the race was on to find the plastic eggs to exchange for chocolate ones.
Wanting to be involved VDG Ramesh ably took charge of the Egg & Spoon Race and even managed to persuade the Mayor to take part. Whilst the races were taking place a small committee chose the winners of the various competitions. After light refreshments and drinks it was time for the highlight of the afternoon -the Duck Race. Every person was given a numbered plastic duck and everyone went down to the Cub stream to watch. The Leos started the race with a mass avalanche of yellow ducks. Everyone stood along the bank laughing and cheering their duck home.
Back to the Scout Hall for prize distribution with every child receiving an Easter Egg and extra ones for the winners
Grace
In this ever changing world may we always go forward together to help those less fortunate than ourselves. For what we are about to receive may the lord make us truly thankful and ever mindful of the needs of others. Amen.

DIABETES HEALTH SCREENING 2013
1
The Lions club of Fairlop in North East London in conjunction with the local diabetes teams and Diabetes UK carried out various Diabetes Health Screenings.
The objective of these health screenings is to highlight patients who might have diabetes and are not aware they have it. There are lots of patients with undiagnosed diabetes and if not treated on time could lead to risk of diabetes related complications like stroke, kidney damage etc.
Health Screenings were done with the diabetes team at Whipps cross-‐University Hospital at an African Church and Havering DUK family group at the Romford shopping
2
center. The lion members were approaching the public to get their Blood Pressure; Random Blood Glucose checked and was also given dietary advice by specialist diabetes dieticians.
Over 500+ patients were screened and approx. 4 – 6 % of the patients had high sugar levels and were referred to their GPs for a diagnosis of diabetes.
Lions club of Fairlop sorted out all the logistics supplied the marquee, food, tables, chairs etc. and support the health care professionals at these events.
9th March
15th Nov

500+ Patients attended the health screening.
Diabetes is much more prevalent among Asians.
These health screening days are welcomed by many patient’s who do not get the opportunity to go to their GPs

Type 1 diabetes is the type of diabetes that typically develops in children and young adults. In type 1 diabetes the body stops making insulin and the blood sugar (glucose) level goes very high. Treatment to control the blood glucose level is with insulin injections and a healthy diet. Other treatments aim to reduce the risk of complications and include reducing blood pressure if it is high, and to lead a healthy lifestyle. The symptoms that usually occur when you first develop type 1 diabetes are: You are very thirsty a lot of the time, you pass a lot of urine, Tiredness, weight loss, and feeling generally unwell.
The above symptoms tend to develop quite quickly, over a few days or weeks. After treatment is started, the symptoms soon settle and go. However, without treatment, the blood sugar (glucose) level becomes very high and acids form in the bloodstream. If this persists you will become lacking in fluid in the body (dehydrated), and are likely to lapse into a coma and die.
If the blood glucose level is higher than normal, over a long period of time, it can have a damaging effect on the blood vessels. Even a mildly raised glucose level which does not cause any symptoms in the short term can affect the blood vessels in the long term.
This may lead to some of the following complications (often years after diabetes is first diagnosed): Furring or hardening of the arteries (atheroma) which can cause problems such as angina, heart attacks, stroke and poor circulation. Eye problems, which can affect vision. This is due to damage to the small arteries of the retina at the back of the eye. Kidney damage, which sometimes develops into kidney failure. Nerve damage. Foot problems. These are due to poor circulation and nerve damage. Impotence. Again, this is due to poor circulation and nerve damage.
2
The diagnosis of type 1 diabetes represents a crisis for children and parents. Family members often experience the classic stages of grief as they begin to grapple with the lifelong nature of diabetes and its potential consequences. In the first few months, it is common for children and adolescents to feel sad, lonely, anxious and irritable. Outbursts of temper, pessimism about the future, and refusal to take insulin or go to school are less common responses and more cause for concern. Parents, especially mothers, also report feelings of depression and anxiety, which may be precipitated by guilt or worry about the child’s future. These negative reactions in youngsters and their parents seem to be normative responses, and they tend to subside during the first year. When adjustment problems persist, however, there is greater risk for later problems with psychosocial adjustment and metabolic control. The Newham Diabetes Team approached the Lions club of Fairlop to do various activities with the kids. Jenny Hurley who is the diabetes specialist nurse said, “We feel that it is very important that our children can socialize together, so that they realize they are not the only one diagnosed with this awful condition. Also it will increase our working relationship with our patients and parents”. The Lions club of Fairlop sponsored various Events in Aug
Entertainers and a picnic were arranged for children under 8 at Newham hospital at the Rainbow ward. Rock Climbing was arranged for kids 8 – 16 years old at Mile End. 8-‐16 year old girls were given modern dance lesson at Shrewsbury health center in Newham. The pediatric Consultant and the diabetes team from Newham were very grateful to the lions club of Fairlop for sponsoring this event as the kids made new friends and were able to help and support each other with this life long condition.

WATER IS LIFE - WATER PROJECT IN KENYAAfter the admirable success of the Kwa Luma water project in Makindu, Kenya, Lions Club of Fairlop embarked on a second joint venture with Ramgarhia Youth Association, Kenya, Sikh Union, Nairobi and Sikh Union, Coventry to carry out another bore hole water project in Kenya in the semi-arid area of Kionyweni, Machakos
The site was selected after a study revealed that the nearest water point for the poor residents of this area was over 8 kilometres away and young children spent almost half a day to fetch a plastic jerry can of water for the daily family needs, and this too, at the expense of the children’s education.
The bore hole was drilled after careful study and tests for the quality of water. An electric bore hole pump was installed and a generator was provided to run the pump as the rural area has no electricity supply. A water tank was also installed to be filled up when the pump is run and the residents benefit from this by continually drawing water as required. A population of almost 10,000 people and their livestock is served by the bore hole which cost a total of about £15000.
We believe that water is critical for sustainable development, including environmental integrity and the alleviation of poverty and hunger, and is indispensable for human health and well-being. We therefore welcome donations for more water projects to be carried out in Africa and would also be pleased to partner with well-wishers to improve access to safe water for children and rural families in need.
As I thank all our well-wishers, I will be failing in my duties if I do not thank the following for their kind assistance and partnership in this project as I complement members of their respective organizations:Mr. Kulvinder Sirha – Chairman – Ramgarhia Youth Association, KenyaMr. Pindi Chana – Chairman – Sikh Union, CoventryMr. Munai Bansal – Chairman – Sikh Union, NairobiMr. Bobby Jandu – Past Chairman – Sikh Union, Nairobi
Lion Pinda Jandoo, Project Coordinator – Lions Club of Fairlop
DENTAL CAMP – KENYAA free rural dental camp jointly sponsored by Lions Club of Fairlop, Sikh Union, Nairobi, Ramgarhia Youth Association, Kenya and Sikh Union, Coventry and was organized in Kenya at the Mata Veeran Kaur Hospital in Makindu.
This is a rural area where medical facilities are minimal and dental practitioners are not available. The main objective of the camp was to educate people especially children and to reach out to the underprivileged sections of the society on the prevalence of dental diseases in rural areas and to motivate and cultivate the importance of oral hygiene.
The camp evoked good response from people of the surrounding areas as over 100 patients were attended to by Dr. Parvin Singh Jandu of Nairobi, who examined the patients on a voluntary basis.
Overall 84 extractions were done at the camp and free medicines and tooth paste and tooth brushes were distributed to the patients.
On behalf of Lions Club of Fairlop, I thank our three partners in this project and take this opportunity to thank Dr. Parvin Singh Jandu for giving his valuable time and support for this cause.

Fairlop Lions are proud and delighted to acknowledge the Fairlop
Leos 10 years of service to the local community. With an average
membership of 25 exceptional young people between the ages 12 -14

years have raised in excess of £50.000
The Leos Club, have had a very successful and busy year raising funds
via raffles, tin shakes, table top sales, cake sales, mufti days, quiz sheets
and sponsored events. They organised their two annual pantomime
visits for disadvantaged children and the Mencap group , took a table
of youngsters to the District Youth Celebration, helped care for a table
of senior citizens at the District Party, held an Environment Day and
planted trees, sold ‘glowies’ for Barnardos, helped the Round table,
collected tins and fresh produce for the local Food Bank and supported
the local Children’s Centre Halloween and Christmas Parties plus
donated books to seven local schools and Nurseries worth over £1000
and took time out at school to be mentors for reluctant readers. The
Club also took a lead role in the Zone Easter Egg Hunt and Duck Race.
They celebrated World Sight Day bringing the problems of blindness
to the fore resulting in collections of spectacles becoming a regular
project. All of our Leos are working on the Young Leaders in Service
Awards where they receive recognition for 25 hours,50 hours and 100
hours of volunteering completed in a year. Already some have reached
over 150 hours!
The Club is friendly, strong and vibrant and working together as a team.

Fairlop Lions Club is unique in sponsoring a local Scout Group-the only such sponsorship by Lions in the UK. Our Group - Becontree Scouts have Beaver, Cubs and Scouts sections ensuring that local boys and girls between 6-14 years old have an opportunity to help them improve their key skills, including social skills, teamwork ability, leadership ability and confidence. They are able to collect activity and
profeciency badges for their uniform and a number of the group have completed Chief Scout Bronze and Silver Awards and are working towards their Gold Award.
Fairlop Lions provide support for the management committee, help with the annual Environment Day, the Fun Day and other activities for this youth group. We are proud that the Scouts took a lead role in
the successful Scout Easter Hunt and Duck Race in April 2013 along with IPP Lion Tajinder Marway
Some of our Scouts were chosen to take part in the City of London’s Lord Mayors Parade and the Group collected for the British Legion Poppy Appeal at St Paul’s Cathedral raising over £400. They are
keen to engage with other Scout Groups and won the Inter Troop Bowling competition.
The Scout Group has a wide range of activities enabling the youngsters to make a huge difference both to their lives and across the wider community. Exciting activities, shared fun and lasting
friendships give long term benefits for each child.
This year the local Zone Lions were able to sponsor three exceptional candidates from LB Redbridge into the Lions Young Ambassador Award. The Award is a means of encouraging, recognizing and supporting young people between the ages 15-19 with their volunteering. Cody Lee Smart, a 15
year old student, was sponsored by Fairlop Lions Club and has to date raised over £30,000 for local charities, by using his amazing musical talents. The caliber of the local candidates was extremely high and Cody was a very close runner up to another local boy Greg Wade who went on to come second in the national final. His speech at Convention 2014 was truly inspiring and received a standing ovation
from the delegates.
UN/Lions Peace Poster ContestEach year, Lions Clubs around the world proudly sponsor the UN/Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This Contest encourages young people worldwide to
artistically express their visions of peace. This year the contestants aged between 11-13 years were given the theme Our World, Our Future. From a total of 230 local entries from Youth Clubs, Schools
and Scout Groups Fairlop Lions choose four posters to go forward to the 105A Final, where they were very worthy runners up.
Senior Citizens Party 2014Once again this year, Fairlop Lions Club sponsored a table of senior citizens to the District Party in Harrow where they joined over 800 other pensioners for an afternoon of entertainment, dancing,
afternoon tea and bingo. Many of the attendees have few social outings and often see no visitors from one week to the next. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and on leaving asked can we come again
next year?

Technology has moved at a fast pace but the Fax machine has still survived- but are you practicing ‘safe fax?’- read on and find out.
Q: DO I HAVE TO BE MARRIED TO HAVE SAFE FAX?A: Although married people fax quite often, there are many single people who fax complete strangers every day.
Q: MY PARENTS SAY THEY NEVER HAD FAX WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG AND WERE ONLY ALLOWED TO WRITE MEMOS TO EACH OTHER UNTIL THEY WERE 21. HOW OLD SHOULD SOMEONE BE BEFORE THEY CAN FAX?A: Faxing can be performed at any age once you have learnt the correct procedure.
Q: IS THERE IS A PLACE ON OUR STREET WHERE YOU CAN GO AND PAY FOR FAX- IS THIS LEGAL?A: Yes- many people have no other outlet for their fax drives and must pay a professional when their need to fax becomes too great.
Q: IF I FAX MYSELF WILL I GO BLIND?A: Certainly not, as far as we can see.
Q: SHOULD A COVER ALWAYS BE USED FOR FAXING?A: Unless you are really sure of the person you are faxing, a cover should always be used for safe fax.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I INCORRECTLY DO THE PROCEDURE AND I FAX PREMATURELY?A: Don’t panic! Many people prematurely fax especially when they haven’t faxed in a long time. Just start over- most people won’t mind if you try again.
Q: I HAVE A PERSONAL AND BUSINESS FAX. CAN TRANSACTIONS BECOME MIXED UP?A: Being bi-faxual can be confusing, but as long as you use a cover with each one you won’t transmit anything you’re not supposed to.
Perhaps email is a safer option!!
THE GUIDE TO ‘SAFE FAX’
Lions International Purposes • To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs. • To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions clubs. • To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world. • To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship. • To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community. • To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding. • To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.• To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.
Lions Code of Ethics • To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to
the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service. • To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part. • To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another’s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. • Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself. • To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. • Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, as to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means. • To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. • To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
