Reports • DG Request Hello fellow Kiama Lions, As DG I need to have support from Lions in our District to fill a number of positions within my Management Cabinet, and in non-Cabinet positions.

I have virtually filled my Cabinet positions, and I would like to thank Lions David Robson as my Constitution and Bylaws Chair (taking the place of PCC Ian Gammage who is moving to QLD) and Jerry Granger-Holcombe for accepting the important role of Zone Chair for our Zone, 3. Additionally, thankyou to Ray Redgrave, for again taking on the role of Australian Lions Foundation coordinator and again, Dave Robson for being the District Historian and being part of the Global Leadership Team. These positions will be non-Cabinet. I do, however, require another Lion to take on a non-Cabinet position, and I would like to fill it from our folk in Kiama Lions. The position will come under an “Awareness” title, and will combine a number of portfolios, normally filled by a number of Lions. However, in saying that, the combined workload of all these positions will be minimal, but a working knowledge will be required to answer any questions from Clubs/Lions. The portfolio is, for want of a better word, “Medical Awareness” and will cover Diabetes Awareness, Prostate Awareness, Spinal Cord Injury Awareness and Organ Donor Awareness. Please be aware my Doctor friends, that this is not aimed at you guys (but you are not excluded). The roles are for information/donation awareness and the information required is readily available. You will have the assistance of those who have done them in the past. Please consider this request, I look forward to being overwhelmed with offers. Kindest regards, Peter

• The 50th Anniversary Book - History of The Lions Club of Kiama Some months ago, Gerry Mac and I (mainly Gerry) presented to members at a regular meeting, a brief outline of some of the Club’s early history and events that have ‘eventuated’. We had the support for that presentation of a few members who were around in the earlier times and overall, that was really the commencement phase in researching, preparing and publishing a 50-years of history for our Club (due 2020). We have done some preliminary work on setting up the ‘outline’ or ‘structure’ of the book and a key objective is to ensure it will be a very readable book, including for people outside the Club. One major section will be a coverage of the projects that Lions have undertaken and completed (hopefully) over the 50 years. We have sent a number of email requests to some longer-serving members asking for ‘words’ on projects that each may be familiar with or have led. There will be more to come. We are extending an open invitation to each and every member - past and present - to have a ‘think’ and put together any info that we can use or build on. We will of course be editing everything, so don’t worry about those nuisance things like grammar, spelling, etc… We basically want outlines at least, and we can then chase up any detailed info and put together some interesting, short descriptions of as many projects as we can recall - between us all.

This is certainly not overlooking John Hines very valuable publications of the Club’s history over the first 35 years. We will be using these to the ‘max’ to give us leads in to many of the projects this Club has undertaken.

We will also be looking for short anecdotes, humorous bits & pieces, and any odd experiences that members have had. That can include things beyond projects, for example, Conventions, Club outings, family days (some time ago), etc.. So please put your thinking caps on and send any bits and pieces through - anytime. And include as many names as you can recall, as it is the Club member history that we are recording.

Many thanks, Russell [Jan 25, 2018] Carers Cottage update Jan 2018

Because of many conflicting events coinciding, a number of Lions were unable to attend last week’s Dinner meeting at which Ray Redgrave gave a short update , so here is a slightly fuller version.

The DA is with Council and approval is expected shortly, There were some queries raised by them regarding drainage and non- compliant car parking spaces , but we have dealt with those as well as providing extra elevation drawings.

We were able to negotiate a great deal with Timms Roofing and so decided to replace the roof, as all the guttering, fascia boards etc needed replacing anyway. They will use metal/tin instead of concrete tiles and work has started and should be completed this week. We have also decided to use some skylights to lighten dark areas , these will be fitted by the roofers.

Tony Grainger and Ray, ably assisted by Richard Langford and Michael Fox and others have been busy internally and externally. Internally we have been greatly assisted by Steve Pottie of Gerringong Lions , a retired builder who has done sterling work on the carpentry, replacing internal walls. He has been ably assisted by other members of the club who are enjoying doing work with us. We have also received help from Roger Milburn and Bruce from Minnamurra who for example, spent a day last week fitting trimmings (roof noggins).

We have also decided to fit new flooring on top of the old in order to have a uniform pattern throughout. The new internal layout means that differing boards needed to be inserted in the gaps and would never look right. Additionally the extra layer will obviate the step into the bathrooms caused by tiles being at a different height.

Externally we had the massive surface roots of the gum tree ground out in order to clear the car parking area.

We should commence painting shortly and will be talking to Bunnings

Dave Robson has wired up the interior for NBN and security

John Unwin’s Grandson Josh, is doing the Electrical wiring etc for us . He has negotiated with the wholesaler for us to get the equipment at cost, then they will also make a $500 donation .

Next week we have a plumber coming to look at what will be required and then we will talk to Reece the suppliers in Oak Flats.

Once the wiring and plumbing lines has been installed we will be filling the walls with Rockwall insulation , which Bunnings are keen to help in the supply and fitting. Then we can fit the Gyprock.

We are currently investigating underfloor air conditioning /heating and are negotiating solar power and heating.

Financially we are OK but could always do with more, we would like to have money left over on completion as a “slush fund” for emergencies , additional extras etc, as well as covering running costs in the early stages .

Kiama Bowling Club recently held a charity night and as a result have made a $500 donation.

• Lions Club BBQ held at 170th Kiama Show held on 26-27 January 2018 Our two day BBQ activity including the introduction of Lion Burgers was very successful in spite of the heat. A large percentage of our Members, their partners and Lions Volunteers, made this possible. The pull down on Sunday morning presented a major challenge as we could not access our BBQ Trailer at our storage facilitydue to a gas leakage in the street nearby, but, as usual, our Member Team met the challenge by taking parts of our equipment away from the Show Ground in a convoy of their own vehicles to hold in temporary storage. A very special thank you to all who participated.

• Stamp Collection A letter of appreciation. Dear Ian, Thank you for your wonderful donation of used stamps received yesterday. The stamps will be sorted into saleable lots and sent on to Sydney at the end of this month where they will be included in the next Philas auction. Every stamp we receive and every cent raised is then donated to the Australian Lions Childrens Mobility Foundation to assist purchase walking frames for children born with cerebral palsy. Since the project commenced 13 years ago we have handed over more than $67000 for ALCMF and I am delighted to be able to tell you that we presented a cheque for a RECORD $15500 at the Australian Convention in Hobart last May. This record can be proudly shared by all the clubs, businesses and individuals participating in this wonderful project.

Since that May handover, we have ALREADY ACCUMULATED A FURTHER $18500 with the March auction still to come so we are looking at a huge result again in this Lions year. It is the support we are receiving from clubs and Lions like you that are assisting us to bring in these unbelievable results.

It does assist us greatly, and saves us all a lot of extra work, when the stamps are clipped from the envelope leaving an edge of no more than ¼” and no less than 1/8” around the stamps as you do so well. Clipped rather than torn as the torn stamps take away some of the value of from the clipped stamps in to boxes. This makes it so much easier for us as the buyers are now refusing to buy unclipped stamps and anything unclipped has to be cleaned up by us before it can go into the auctions. They buy them by the kilo and will not bid if they see unclipped or closely clipped paper around the stamps. Similarly they do not want to purchase stamps that have been torn or scribbled through with a biro or texta and these stamps are also discarded by us when preparing our boxes for sale.

In the past year we have made some changes to the way we now prepare the stamps for the auctions and these changes have assisted greatly in increasing the sale results. As an example, at the last auction we sold a total 27.5 kilos of the 50c and over and received $3750 for these. One box of 8 kilos sold for $1600 alone.

The breakup we are now doing is:-

1. Australia stamps ON paper 50c and over. 2. Australia stamps ON paper UNDER 50c. This includes the concession stamps.

3. Australia stamps OFF paper (ALL 4. Foreign stamps ON paper 5. Foreign stamps OFF paper

6. First day covers, postpacks, empty albums, mint pre stamps envelopes and mint stamps. In fact anything else to do with philately.

Again thank you so much and I look forward to your continuing support for the project.

KIAMA RED CROSS CALLING – 2018 DOOR KNOCK APPEAL

The Kiama Branch will once again be undertaking Red Cross Calling in March 2018.

As you may be aware, Kiama Lions members have been keen supporters of our branch with this annual activity assisting our branch by volunteering to door knock to raise funds. Support from our local community groups and business is an integral part of this calendar event. Without it, we would be unable to continue to contribute to valuable Australian Red Cross programs.

For your information, our branch was “again” awarded the Chairman’s Shield (on display at the Library) for raising the most funds for a Country Branch for the 2017 campaign, announced at the recent Australian Red Cross (NSW) Annual General Meeting.

We are proud to say we have received this award for the fifth time in the last seven years. We acknowledge the effort and generosity of the Kiama community and understand such achievement awards could never be realised without the support and assistance from all our volunteers and contributors.

We will be seeking your Club’s assistance in supporting our branch in 2018. It would be appreciated if you could table this request at a meeting in the New Year to ascertain if your organisation is willing to help again.

I appreciate your consideration of this request. If you require any further information, please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or telephone my mobile on 0413 381 690. Vicki Robb
