Greetings Lions Officers of the 9NE District

    LIONS POKING HOLES IN DARKNESS

When Robert Louis Stevenson was a young lad of about 12 years old, he was sitting in his upstairs room looking out the window. He was waiting to be called for supper when he noticed the lamplighter going down the street lighting all the street lamps. His Mother bust into his room and said, “ROBERT! I have been calling you! Why are you not coming for your supper?” He said, “Mother come here quick and look out the window and tell me what you see.” She did and said,” I see the lamplighter lighting lamps.” He said, “No, mother the Lamplighter is Poking Holes in Darkness.”

Thinking about the Lamplighter story it struck me that DARKNESS comes in many forms:

    WHEN YOU CAN’T SEE

    WHEN YOU CAN’T HEAR

WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE YOUR NEXT MEAL IS COMING FROM

    WHERE YOU WILL SLEEP TONIGHT

WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURE IF YOUR DRINKING WATER IS SAFE

ANXIETY OF A RECENT DIAGNOSES OF DIABETES

DISPAIR AND WORRY OVER A CHILD THAT HAS CANCER.

As I consider this darkness, I realize this is what LIONS IN SERVICE is all about. This gives real meaning to Lions being the world’s largest non-profit service organization. As LIONS we are addressing each of these darkness’s. We do it through our local clubs, our district, state, and most certainly, through the Lions Clubs Foundation. It is only fitting, then, that I am adopting as my theme for this year as your 9NE District Governor

LIONS POKING HOLES IN DARKNESS. The following pages will be a guide on how we will do just that.

  • District 9NE District Governor Team

Judy Stone, Council Chair, Past District Governor

Judy has been a Lion since 2003 and began her path to Leadership by serving as State Lioness co-ordinator for three years and becoming District Governor in 2017-2018. She has served multi-ple District Global Service Teams as well as Multiple District, Lions Clubs International Founda-tion chair and President of the Past District Governor Executive board. Judy served MD9 again as District Governor 2019-2020. Judy is a member of the Marshalltown Evening Lions Club and the Marshalltown Lioness Club. She is semi-retired and dabbles in real estate investing.

Richard Congdon, District GovernorGlobal Action Team

Following his father, Russell, Richard joined the Cedar Falls Lions in 1966, served as Treasurer for 14 years and as Secretary 1986 - present. He has served on most of the club’s committees and has chaired many. He helped reorganize the club’s management structure allowing the club to grow from 67 mem-bers to 123. In 2019 he designed and organized a building team to create the Cedar Falls Diabetes Learn-ing Garden and he remains the Garden’s System Manager. He has served the District as an Iowa Lions Foundation Trustee, District Secretary for three years as well as 2nd Vice District Governor and 1st VDG. Richard holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Leadership from Lions University. He is a graduate of Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute. He has attended two USA/Canada forums, is a Melvin Jones Fellow and a Warren Coleman Fellow, and holds four Lions Club International Presidential awards.

Stephen Becker, 1st Vice District GovernorGlobal Leadership Team

Stephen joined Lions in 1990 in Waterloo, Iowa, and has served clubs in Iowa and Nebraska. He was Presi-dent of the Grand Island, NE, club 2002-2003 and Club President of Waverly, Iowa, 2019-2020. He served as a Trustee of the Nebraska Foundation 2003-2005 and was Trustee of the Iowa Lions Foundation, 2013-2014. Stephen served Nebraska Lions as Nebraska’s Multiple District 38 Leadership Development Chair and District governor of 38-I. He has served as 9NE Iowa Centennial Challenge Chair. He participated in Advanced Lions Training, the Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute and received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Li-ons University. Stephen attended four USA/Canada forums as well as Lions Club International conventions in Hong Kong, Hamburg, Toronto, Honolulu, Chicago, and Las Vegas. He is a Melvin Jones Fellow and a Warren Coleman Fellow, was awarded the Klise Leadership award and 13 LCI Presidential Certificates and Medals.

Dale Schrad, 2nd Vice District GovernorGlobal Service Team

Dale was a member of the Davenport Evening Lions (1975-92) and was President twice (1980-81 and 1986-87). He was Lion of the year in 1982-83 as well as being awarded the Warren Coleman Award. He relocated to Cedar Falls to work for Omega cabinets, visited the Cedar Falls Lions in 1994 but reluctant-ly decided that family and work would not allow him the time to serve the Lions properly. Dale retired in March of 2015, and when Don Wood invited him to another Cedar Falls Lions meeting, he decid-ed to join. Since 2015 he has been a Board Member, Membership Chair, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President and served as club President 2019-2020. He was Lion of the Year in 2016-17. In 2019-20 he served as Zone Chairman and was nominated for 2nd Vice District Governor for District 9. He is now in the rotation to be District Governor in 2022-2023. He is immensely proud of the Cedar Falls Lions Club.

  • Purpose and Ethics As Lions, we hold ourselves to the absolute highest standards in everything we do. Our members and clubs are dedicated to serving others, and it shows. We champion kindness in our communities and actively work to improve the lives of all people.

Our Purpose To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs.

To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions clubs.

To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.

To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.

To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.

To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.

To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.

To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.

  • Our Code of Ethics To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.

To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.

To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.

Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.

To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.

Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means.

To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.

  • The “M” Squad Many of our District clubs are faced with similar challenges: membership, reporting, leadership, service ideas, communications, and rewards. We have formed the “M Squad” to help our clubs. The “M” Squad is a group of committed Lions who are willing to be available for consultation and assistance to any club. All you need to do is ask. Our DG team, Cabinet members, and Zone chairs are all expected to be tuned into our clubs. I have asked them to be observant of clubs that might be struggling, and inform the DG team of potential problems. We are trying to be proactive in keeping all of our clubs strong. Many issues can be assisted through phone calls or email. The “M’ Squad membership team will come to your city, and spend a day alongside your club members in canvasing your town for members.
