Everybody here at Thorne knows

exactly what those poor children

and family are going through.

On Monday May 20, 2013 a very

rare thing happened in Moore

Oklahoma. A huge tornado oc-

curred going right over a school

which did not have a storm-

purpose shelter on the property.

Twenty four people were killed

in this including 11 children. 377

people were injured and over

12,000 homes were destroyed.

This tornado took almost the

exact same path as Oklahoma’s

deadly 1999 tornado. The tor-

nado was on the ground for 39

minutes and covered a 17 mile

path. At Least 33,000 people

were affected during this trag-

edy. The day after the tornado

there was no water in Oklahoma

and a lot of homes were left with

power outages. There is an

estimate of around $1.5 billion

to $2 billion worth of damage .

The majority of the people that

were affected were chil-

Three brave women in Ohio

named Amanda Berry, Gina De-

Jesus, and Michelle Knight were

kidnapped between 2000 and

2004, all on different occasions.

The age range of the women was

age 14-20. These young ladies

were held in Ariel Castro's house

for a decade. He and his broth-

ers, Pedro and O'Neal were

arrested. The police had never

stopped looking for the girls,

they even dug up two backyards.

The nightmare finally ended

when Amanda Berry had the

courage to try and escape. She

succeeded. Berry then called

911 and told the dispatcher,

"Help me, I'm Amanda Berry. I've

been kidnapped, I've been missing

for 10 years and I'm out here. I'm

free now." Berry was praised for

this frantic call. She is now a

Memorial Day By Julia Fuchs

Memorial Day weekend. Possible the last three day weekend of the school year. For most people Memorial

Day is sales, barbeques, opening the pool for the summer, and having parties. Although those things are fun peo-

ple should also remember what this holiday is really about. Memorial Day is a day for Americans to honor those

men and women who were killed in the wars so we can be free today.

This holiday originated during the Civil War to honor the fallen soldiers. Memorial Day didn't become an official

holiday until 1971. What did you do to honor those brave men and women who fought for us? At

least putting in a thought about them on Memorial Day is something you should do. Other sugges-

tions to honor these soldiers are visiting a graveyard. We have many graveyards in Middletown

where soldiers are buried, one of them even including Thorne’s own Corporal Horace ―Buddy‖

Thorne in Fairview Cemetery. Just by sending over a letter or card to a soldier is a great way to

show some Memorial Day spirit. Soldiers love getting letters or cards from people especially chil-

dren recognizing everything they did for us and even honoring the soldiers they knew who got

killed.

Even if you have some plans for a barbecue or party on this weekend take some time out of your

celebration to remember those who died so we can be here today. Citizens of Thorne should

especially take time to remember all those who died in The Battle of The Bulge and think about

our hero Corporal Horace ―Buddy‖ Thorne.

can be worn by people who

love vintage style and want to

subtly add pops of color to

their summer wardrobe.

Lace-

Another trend to look totally

feminine. You can go all out

and wear a girly lace dress or

add hints of lace to an edgy

outfit. Leather and lace is an

unconventional way to sport

this trend and mixes masculine

and feminine elements per-

fectly. Lace or lace-

incorporated shorts are also

very popular and help to make

any casual outfit look put to-

gether which has an interna-

tional flair and as the French

say ―a la mode!‖

Black and White-

Classic makes a come back!

This trend is perfect for every-

one and every occasion. Dress

it up with a black dress and

white sandals or wear it casu-

ally with a band-tee and sum-

mery white shorts.

Pastels-

This trend is made for girly

girls who want to look cute

and fun this summer. Brighter

hues can be worn on fun days

in the sun with friends, and

more demure, muted shades

I-Phone vs. Galaxy S4

By Christelle Chemaly PA G E 3

While Apple is the king of Smartphone,

Samsung has launched some new com-

petition. The Galaxy S4 is out of this

world!

While the I-Phone5 has a great camera

and the Galaxy S4 came out with a

better one containing 13 mega pixels,

in comparison to the 8 the I-Phone

has. Although the iPhone5 is better

constructed the Galaxy S4 takes ad-

vantage of it’s plastic cover by having a

removable battery. The galaxy has a

huge screen which could be a good or

bad thing, depending on the buyer.

The one thing that is for sure, the Gal-

axy has stolen many customers from

Apple

Kimberly Wilkins (mostly known as Sweet

Brown) has become an Internet sensation due

to her appearance on Oklahoma City News. "

―We'll I woke up to go get me a cold pop, and

then I thought somebody was barbecuing! I

said o lord Jesus it's a fire! Then I ran out I

didn't grab no shoes or nothing Jesus, I ran for

my life, and then the smoke got me, I got

bronchitis, ain't nobody got time for dat!"

Out of 30 people surveyed, these are the

popular choices for summer activities.

“Everybody Got Time For This!”

By Christelle Chemaly

The suit was first filed in the District Court

of Oklahoma County in June 2012, when at

the time Sweet Brown was suing for 15

million dollars, but the suit has since moved

to the United States District Court for the

Western District of Oklahoma where

Sweet Brown has lowered her suit to 7.5

million dollars. Apple has the lawyers and

money to win but Sweet Brown does have

a good case. Who wins is a question only

time can answer.

Mrs. Weinstein’s Tree, by Hailey Drake

Interview with Mrs. Korz By Hailey Drake

Q- Why did you replant the tree?

A- The tree was destroyed in Super storm

Sandy. So it felt good in my heart to clean it up.

Q-What was Mrs. W’s job in the school?

A- She worked in the Special ED Program and

started a program

that was like the

Caught Doing

Good Program we

have now.

Q- Why did you

also clean the tree

in the front of the

school too?

A-Well I had a

bunch of people so

I thought lets clean

that one too because it was a mess. The stu-

dent that was memorialized there had leukemia.

The school has many memorials, and we want

to keep that one clean.

Q-Did you ever go back to check on the tree?

A-Yes I look at it daily.

Q- When I helped I saw the tree was falling

down. What did you do?

A-We put a stilt in it and eventually the roots

will grow and it will be able to stay up by its

own. The school was under construction a

couple of years ago. At that point the tree was-

n't that close to the school. It is now because

of the addition of the science wing. The tree

survived that but not Sandy.

Q What type of tree was it?

A- It was a Blossom plum.

Q- Did it grow plums?

A No just the color.

Thank you Mrs. Korz for the interview.

THORNE COMMENTARY

About one month ago on Monday April

15,2013 a very scary life changing

event occurred during The Boston

Marathon. While innocent people were

finishing the race two pressure cooker

bombs were set

off near the finish

line at 2:49 pm.

The bombs were

blown off about

13 seconds and

210 yards apart.

These bombs

unfortunately

killed three spec-

tators that were

at the marathon and they injured 264

people that were at the scene of the

bombings. The two men responsible

for this are 26 year old Tamerlan Tsar-

naev and his 19 year old brother

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Tamerlan

Tsaraev as well as a police officer

were killed in a shooting three days

after the attack. Dzhokhar was found in

a boat and captured on Friday April 19.

After all of these events I felt horrible

and I prayed for the innocent people

who were harmed in this tragedy. After

a few days I decided to see what the

people around me had to say about

this. I interviewed Mrs.Tatem

my language arts teacher. The questions

will have a Q in front of them. Mrs. Tatems

responses will have a “T” in front of them.

Q: How do you feel about the

Boston Tragedy?

T: I feel like it strikes home for

me, my daughter went to

school in Boston about walk-

ing distance from the bomb-

ings.

Q: Do you think there will be

more security because of

this?

T: Yes, there will be an increase in secu-

rity. I feel that it is a good thing and there

are [even] times when nobody is watching

[but] there is somebody [watching you] on

cameras.

Q: How do you feel about the develop-

ment of this crime?

T: My heart breaks for the M.I.T officer

who was called for the armed robbery last

night. It is just really scary to think about

those kind of things happening and it is

very scary for the people who are locked

down. I can’t imagine how I would feel if

my daughter was still in school locked

down not able to use a cell phone.

I Survived the Shark Attack of

1916—Lauren Tarshis

This book is a historical fiction.

It examines the actual events

that happened in NJ in July of

1916. Four people were killed

by shark attacks. Two of them

were killed while swimming off

the coast of Beach Haven, NJ

and Spring Lake NJ. The other

while swimming in the Matawan

Creek, Matawan, NJ. The his-

torical facts in the book are ac-

curate but the characters are

fiction.

The book is exciting.
