THE Greatest Lions team ever? Supporters throughout Britain and Ireland will be debating the issue long and hard this winter in anticipation of the Lions tour of South Africa, from May to July next year. The Daily Telegraph, in conjunction with HSBC, will be joining in the fun and asking you to help make the definitive choice.

Telegraph rugby writer Brendan Gallagher has compiled the Lions Top 100 list featured below, including a couple of maverick selection as befits all Lions squads. If you disagree with any of his nominations — and you will — we want you to email and write in with your comments.

And as part of a season-long partnership with

the Telegraph, counting down to the tour, HSBC has organised a series of eight sumptuous Lions dinners and lunches — in support of the Lions Charitable Trust — around the four home unions. Each of these gatherings will have the onerous task of selecting the all-time Lions player for a particular position.

The breakdown by dinner will be full-back, wings, centres, halfbacks, props and hookers, second rows, flankers and finally No 8s. Those attending will have the chance to rub shoulders with legendary Lions such as Gareth Edwards, Gavin Hastings and Jerry Guscott, who will be on hand to offer their thoughts and guidance.

Ahead of those events, Telegraph writers will have a detailed look at all the candidates and the floor will be open constantly for your comments. Having examined all the evidence, those attending the functions will then make the definitive choice.

Remember, at all times, the criteria being employed are the contribution these players concerned made to the British and Irish Lions. Performances and record-breaking feats for their individual nations should be set aside. The challenge is to select the greatest-ever Lions team and honour the Lions who roared the loudest.
